Chapter 49
Rose felt the Doctor's terror through the block regardless, and reached out the exact same time as he did, forcing her way despite the pain and throbbing in her temples, despite the swirling terror despite it all and wrapped her mind around the Doctor's.
"Mrs Silvestry. I'm trying to understand. You've captured my speech, what for?" Rose felt the Doctor talking, but the woman talking with him, she had no idea what it was, and neither did he. "What d'you need? You need my voice in particular. The cleverest voice in the room. Why? Cos I'm the only one who can help? Ohh, I'd love that to be true. But your eyes. They're saying something else. Listen to me. Whatever you want, if it's life, or form, or consciousness, or voice, you don't have to steal it."
'Rose get out, it's too dangerous. I don't know what it's about to do.' the Doctor told her.
"You can find it without hurting anyone. And I'll help you. That's a promise. So. What d'you think?" the Doctor continued talking despite talking to Rose without a pause.
Rose wasn't going to leave him alone, which as she went to tell him she felt it. Something slimy, black, dark, horrible began seeping into the Doctor's mind, it's tendrils grasping a hold and Rose screamed, shocking those in the truck with him. She didn't know what she did, but all of a sudden she was back in her mind, but the Doctor was in hers. Not like their normal connection, his mind was in hers, not his body at all. There was that connection still, and both of them could hear Sky and the creature talking and then his body repeating, but the black tendrils that had been attacking couldn't reach them. His body was being used, the creature staying in Sky but passing on the immobility and the people's fear and hatred into the Doctor's body.
'Oh Rose, you brilliant girl, I don't know what you just did but I have a feeling if I had still had my conscious mind in my body then I'd have been in trouble.' the Doctor told her.
'I had to do something.'
"This is bizarre." Rose said.
"You're telling me." The Doctor added, "You shouldn't be able to do this. How, what, what did you do?"
"Rose, are you alright?" Donna asked. She had been dozing, Rose, only to suddenly wake and start screaming before burning hot, temperature skyrocketing, causing Milla to rush into action, before slumping over. Now she was talking to herself.
"It was attacking them." Rose told Donna. "Then it was attacking the Doctor. And I could feel it in his mind and,"
"And she pulled me out." the Doctor finished.
Except, it was Rose talking, so to Donna, Rose was suddenly showing signs of multiple personalities.
"Right. So now the Doctor is in your head? Isn't he always there?" Donna asked.
"Not like this." Rose answered.
"We're normally connected. But she took in my whole consciousness. I didn't even know this was possible." the Doctor also spoke.
"Has she gone crazy?" Milla asked, as her Gus and Clive watched.
"Sorry, I'm the Doctor." the Doctor grinned at the three people he didn't know.
"Stop it." Rose muttered, "They think its me just talking to myself." Rose rubbed her head as it throbbed painfully. "It's still me, I just, my partner, the Doctor, his species is telepathic. And so we're connected together, and they were being attacked and he was being attacked and I just, reacted." Rose explained.
"None of that made sense." Milla said, "But ok. We're about 25 minutes away."
"It'll be too late." Rose muttered, shutting her eyes and refocusing on what was happening to the Doctor's body and in the truck.
It was a scary, nauseating feeling, to have the Doctor in her mind, for them both to be in his mind, but not really because the Doctor was shielding them, keeping them separate, to feel his body locked in place and his mouth moving, but to also feel the black tendrils in his mind, controlling his mouth as it possessed him.
"That's how he does it." Sky said.
"That's how he does it."
"He makes you fight."
"He makes you fight."
"Creeps into your head."
"Creeps into your head."
"And whispers."
"And whispers."
"Listen."
"Listen."
"Just listen."
"Just listen."
"That's him."
"That's him."
"Inside."
"Inside."
"Throw him out!" Biff shouted.
"Get him out of my head!" Val screeched.
"Yeah, we should throw him out!" Biff agreed.
"Well, don't just talk about it! Just, you're useless! Do something!" Val hit his chest, urigng him into action.
"I will! You watch me! I'm gonna throw him out!" Biff announced.
'We have to do something.' Rose said to the Doctor.
'Let me go back in, I can try to fight it.' the Doctor said.
'And have it kill you? No.' Rose refused.
"Yes!"
"Yes!"
"Throw him out!"
"Throw him out!"
"Get rid of him!"
"Get rid of him!"
"Now!"
"Now!"
Biff grabbed the Doctor and started to drag him towards the back door.
"Don't!" Dee Dee yelled, the only one still on the Doctor's side.
"It'll be you next!" Val snapped at her.
"I don't think we should do this!" the Hostess agreed with Dee Dee.
"It was your idea! Professor, help me." Biff struggled to drag the dead weight, especially as the Doctor's foot got stuck.
'Is that you?' Rose asked, referring to the foot hooked into place.
'I do still have some control, especially since I'm safe from it's influence due to you. I think I can at least make it hard for them. Dee Dee and the hostess seem to have realised what's actually going on. Maybe they can convince them not to?'
Rose could feel the Doctor's actual fear though, and knew he didn't believe that.
Biff and the Professor were shouting at each other and getting ready to awkwardly pick the Doctor up.
Rose reached out with her mind, not even sure if it would work, but she reached out to Dee Dee, but got no reply, so tried the hostess. 'PLEASE HELP, IT'S IN SKY. IT HAS THE DOCTOR IMPRISONED.'
The woman jumped but ignored the voice, as Sky and hence the Doctor said, "Do it!"
"Do it!"
"Do it now!"
"Do it now!"
"Faster!"
"Faster!"
"That's the way!"
"That's the way!"
"You can do it!"
"You can do it!"
"Molto bene!"
"Molto bene!"
"Allons-y!"
"Allons-y!"
The hostess realised at that line.
"That's his voice! She's taken his voice!" the hostess cried. No one listened to her, and Rose and the Doctor watched and listened in horror as she did something that was pure selflessness and honourable. She grabbed Sky and opened the fire exit, blinding light filling the carriage as everyone started screaming, before the pressure wall collapsed, and the pair were thrown outside and the door slid shut.
The invasion into the Doctor's mind was gone and his mind slipped from Rose's back into his, and Rose was slammed back into her mind, her head roaring in pain as she fainted.
The Doctor panted on the floor, "It's gone, it's gone... It's gone, it's gone, it's gone... It's gone. It's gone... It's gone, it's gone, it's gone... It's gone, it's gone, it's gone..." just repeating those words, unable to comprehend the bone chilling fear that had overtaken him. He would have died with his body, and he would have left Rose behind all because of the stupid apes in the truck who decided knew better and that death and killing was the only answer. He slowly sat up and leant against the seat, reaching out to do what he could to ease the pain in Rose's mind, the strain of what she had done, what she shouldn't have been able to do yet still did, too much on the girl.
Everyone was breathing heavily, as the fright disappeared and what they had been about to do began to sink in.
"I said it was her." Val feebly tried to excuse herself. The Doctor glared at her and no one dared to say another word for the whole 20 minutes until the rescue truck was meant to appear.

When the truck boarded, The doors between them were connected and opened, to allow the medic in to check the passengers. When the computer voice announced the connection successful, the Doctor struggled to his feet, just as Rose elbowed her way through first and rushed to the Doctor, rushing to wrap her arms around his neck, hugging him closely. The Doctor returned the hug, clinging to Rose, and letting his mind relax into hers, taking comfort from their closeness. Donna followed behind Milla, letting the medic in first, before moving to stand next to the hugging pair, resting a hand on his shoulder in comfort, before glaring at all the other members in the truck.
"You aught to be ashamed of how you all acted." Donna scolded them all. "You're all damn lucky the Doctor was here to help, otherwise you all would have either died or brought back that creature to civilisation and infected the whole world and it would have all been your fault."
"Donna, it's fine." the Doctor stopped her.
"No she is absolutely right." Rse agreed, pulling away. She spun on her heel and stalked up to Val and Biff, before slapping them both, at the same time, hard. She glared at them and her expression just dared them to complain, as both gasped in pain and glared back, but they faltered at the sight of an angry Rose Tyler and didn't say a word. "That is for almost killing my partner." She spat at them. "Because you didn't use your goddamn brains and think. I don't care who that creature had possessed or infected, killing someone shouldn't have ever been an option."
With that Rose turned and returned to the Doctor's side, as Milla checked everyone over. Rose guided the Doctor back down to the floor, to lean against the seat, and Rose curled up next to him, leaning on his chest with her arms around his chest. Donna leaned against his other shoulder. They sat in silence for the drive back.

As they pulled back up at the leisure palace and prepared to disembark, Dee Dee approached the trio.
"Um, ah, Doctor," she said, a little nervous at the face of them.
"Dee Dee." the Doctor acknowledged.
"I'm sorry." she said. "Just, I'm so sorry."
"So am I." the Doctor replied.
Rose spoke up, "There's a difference between acting to defend yourself and protect yourself and your family from a danger and acting stupidly. Yeah you were scared and I don't blame you, I was terrified just knowing what had happened and I wasn't even in here with you lot. But choosing to kill, to murder, to fix a problem should never be an option. Yeah it happens, but it shouldn't be something you choose to do."
"How did you know what was going on?" the Professor asked, confused. The others were annoyed this young woman had come in and scolded and slapped them all and treated them like they were criminals.
Rose glanced at the Doctor, who shrugged. "The Doctor is the last of the Time Lords. A powerful race who were, among other things, telepathic. As his partner, we're linked, and I experienced it with him." Rose told them. And with that, Rose and Donna linked arms with the Doctor on either side of him and the trio left.
