I stared at Demetri as he instructed everyone. I was not accustomed to being told what to do, especially by him. Although, I must admit I was glad to have him in charge; it would have been ignorant of me to assume I was any sort of military strategist. I would do as he said and keep away from the action, which was what I had planned on doing anyway.
My eyes drifted over his shoulder for a moment while he was addressing the Low Guard, and I caught a glimpse of something moving not far ahead. I had heard a murmur of voices as we approached, but now the volume of them had risen to a level that could only be described as intolerable screeching. Although the younger newborn who seemed to be speaking more rapidly was slurring his words together, I still managed to discern some of his less-than-proper vocabulary. It was disgraceful to speak in such a manner, as if he were not a vampire and above such disgusting human trends. Rarely was anything spoken higher than a whisper in Volterra and the language this cretin was using was, thankfully, forbidden; there was no need for such savagery.
I glanced down at Alec and took his hand. I did not desire him to hear such things. "Come along. We will stay back with Felix until the newborn is identified. Then, we will subdue him."
I smiled as Alec nodded and walked with me to the back of the group where we could no longer make out the words that were being screamed by the insane newborn.
"What was he talking about?" Alec asked. "He said he'd bitten another vampire? But why? Drinking our blood will not sustain them. It would be useless."
"You a quite right," I replied, manipulating Alec to where he stood directly behind Felix. "He is mad. You have, of course, seen the vampires that Master Aro is forced to put down due to their lunacy. He is one of those."
This seemed to satisfied Alec and he moved around Felix again to try to get a better view of the situation. I let out a small sigh and placed my hand firmly on his shoulder. He was too curious for his own good sometimes.
I could just see Demetri ahead, still devising a plan with the Low Guard. He was so in change, so sure of himself. I could not help but stare at his intense red eyes and feel - I gasped. The newborn was running straight toward him now. We'd been spotted. The older vampire was headed in another direction, though I could not tell exactly where he was going – there were too many trees.
I started to warn Demetri of his impending collision, but of course he was aware of his surroundings. "D-!" was all I was able to get out before Demetri had the newborn pinned against the tree by his throat. Felix looked back at me with a raised eyebrow and I quickly composed myself.
I cleared my throat and smoothed my hair down before speaking again. "Return to watching the battle," I ordered Felix. "I will inform you if I require your assistance."
Alec watched wide-eyed as Demetri and the newborn exchanged blows. It appeared that Demetri was winning, but this newborn was strong and fast. He had his recent changing to thank for his abilities, but Demetri had many years of experience to make up for it. I was sure he would easily overpower this single threat so that we could continue our search for the one with the power Aro desired to study.
Perhaps, the older vampire who ran off at the sight of us was the one we were after. Did he know he possessed a special power? Did he know that we were here to collect him? I pondered for a moment, and then a sudden thought hit me. Alec had picked up on it, too, about the crazy one biting another vampire. Perhaps, through his bite, he was able to – WHAM! Felix was thrown sideways from in front of me by a whirring force.
"Alec, run back to the plane. Now," I stated as calmly as I could.
The older newborn was back. And he had brought a lot of friends.
