Chapter Fifty

Aomine studied the chart on the wall in front of him.

"Hey Kise…" he said to the blonde sat on the hospital bed on the other side of the room, "did you know that at 27 weeks, the Bump is now approximately 36cm and weights 760g. Their eyes should be opening now as well."

"Really?" said Kise softly as he stroked the top of his stomach.

"They'll also start responding more to noise and if you shine a light on your stomach, they might even try and touch it. It also says that the Bump will start to take small breaths, getting plenty of practice for when he or she is born. That's amazing."

Before Aomine could read anymore, Dr Tanaka walked into the room.

"Sorry about the wait guys," he announced. "Right, let's get this show on the road shall we?"

Aomine resumed his position by Kise's side and held one of his hands. Kise rolled up his jumper and the pair watched quietly as Dr Tanaka poured the clear gel on top. Even though this was their third scan, the two expectant fathers were barely able to contain their excitement.

"Ok…" Dr Tanaka unhooked the camera from the machine and proceeded to move it around Kise's stomach. The boys held their breath as they waited for the image to appear on the screen. When it did, their eyes went wide.

"Oh my…" exhaled Kise. "Hey there little one."

Aomine was speechless.

"It's amazing isn't it?" grinned Dr Tanaka. "I always enjoy seeing the look on people's faces when they have their third scan. It is pretty incredible."

The pair continued to look at the monitor in awe. Dr Tanaka didn't need to tell them what they were looking at, as the image was as clear as day. The Bump was curled up; knees tucked in with a tiny hand placed on top of their stomach. They could clearly make out the Bump's head, nose, fingers and toes. The room was filled with the sound of a very healthy sounding heartbeat. And once again, Kise found himself unable to keep his emotions under check as the tears began to pour down his face.

Fifteen minutes later, the two boys were back in Dr Tanaka's office. Their MOP was pleased with how things were progressing and was ready to move onto the next topic.

"So guys, have you decided on a birthing plan yet?"

Aomine and Kise looked at one another.

"We have" said Kise. "We've decided to do this naturally."

"Are you sure?" confirmed Dr Tanaka.

Kise nodded.

"Ok. Excellent. Now, this may seem like a daft question and believe me not everybody does, but do you know exactly what a natural birth entails? For a male carrier that is?"

"I've done a lot of reading on it" replied Kise, "it's not that much different from female labour right?"

"Not really no. The only difference would be the opening of your birth canal. Naturally being male, you don't have an 'opening' for your baby to come out of. So towards the end of your pregnancy, your body begins to develop one. Just another wonderful change your body goes through." The MOP waited a moment before continuing. "When your baby is ready to be born, your, by then fully developed, birth canal will open up, ready to welcome him or her into the world. From that point onwards there's a lot of pushing and deep breathing. And once the baby's born, your canal will naturally heal up. This can take days or weeks depending on the person. You with me so far?"

The boys nodded.

"There's obviously a few other things you need to think about. For example, do you want a drug-free labour or are you banking on an epidural? Do you want your delivery to be a private affair with just your partner and medical staff in the room or do you want other family members there as well? Do you want any special music playing? Do you want a private room?"

Kise and Aomine looked a little overwhelmed by all of the sudden questions. Tanaka laughed. "Of course there is still time to plan all of these things. And, as I am sure you both know, there is a whole section in the diary regarding your birthing plan. The two key things we need to know at this point are whether you want to deliver naturally or not so we can pencil you in for a c-section, and whether you are planning on breastfeeding. Since we already know the answer to the first one, what about the second? Do you plan on breastfeeding Kise-kun?"

"Err…" Kise could feel his cheeks going red.

"It's ok," assured Dr Tanaka, as if reading the blonde's mind. "Most male carriers feel slightly uncomfortable about the idea of breast-feeding at first. They seem to think it'll make them less of a man or that they'll develop breasts. But, I assure you and I'm speaking from experience that neither is the case. You won't be any less of a man if you choose to breast-feed your baby and you certainly won't develop breasts. In about a week's time your body will start producing milk naturally anyway. We ask this question now, because if you choose that you don't want to breast-feed, there is a hormonal treatment that will stop any milk production. And it will be of no detriment to you or your baby whatsoever. If you decide to breast-feed, you will only become more defined. That's all."

Aomine looked at his boyfriend. Even though he knew this topic would have been brought up eventually, he had never actually discussed it with Kise. He was leaving it entirely up to him.

"I've given it a lot of thought," Kise replied. "And I think I'm going to feed my baby the natural way so I won't need any hormonal treatments."

Dr Tanaka smiled. "Ok. Now, I'm just going to briefly go over what to expect within the next couple of weeks. You are 27 weeks pregnant which means you will soon be entering your final trimester. At this moment in time, the Bump is about the size of a head of cauliflower. With the second semester drawing to a close, you may experience some new symptoms. Now, I know you're already experiencing back and feet ache, but you may also start to feel some leg and knee cramp as well."

Kise rolled his eyes. Great.

Dr Tanaka continued. "Stretching and walking around is a good way of helping this. You may also experience Braxton Hicks contractions. These are common and can happen during any point in a pregnancy, particularly late on. If you experience any of these, keep a track of them. If they become less than half an hour apart, you may be going into labour. Of course I don't mean to scare you, but the reality is, premature labour is far more dangerous for male pregnancies than it is for female and must be treated immediately. If the amniotic sac is broken the father will go into labour or have a miscarriage. Depending how premature the labour, the birth canal may not be fully formed and the baby will have no way of getting out. This can be very dangerous for both father and baby. But this is of course worst case scenario and something I just have to make you aware of. So Kise-kun, if you feel anything out of the ordinary or any discomfort, you let us know straight away ok?"

Kise gulped and nodded. Dr Tanaka's words had, for want of a better word, but the fear of living God in him. Aomine must have noticed this as he grabbed his boyfriend's hand and placed a kiss on top. "Don't worry babe. It's just a precaution. Nothing is going to happen to the Bump. I won't let it."

Kise nodded and placed a hand on top of the Bump.

Not wanting to be the barer of bad news, Dr Tanaka said, "did you know, that your baby is now sleeping and waking at regular intervals? And that he or she is perhaps even sucking on their fingers? Hiccups are also a common occurrence from now on. And they tickle, believe me."

This made Kise's smile. "Really?"

The MOP nodded. "Yep."

"Oh wow. That's amazing."

"It sure is. Now, I just have a few more things to go through before you go."

"Ok…and close again…"

Gritting his teeth, Shima attempted to close his fingers around the ball in his hand. They had been going at it for about an hour on both his hands and right arm. It was part of his daily physio-therapy.

"Ahhh!" he winced, dropping the ball. The pain in his right hand was immense. His breathing was stammered and he felt sweat beginning to form on his forehead. However, no matter how much it frustrated or hurt him, if it meant that he would be able to hold and feed his baby, he wasn't about to complain or give up.

"That's great Shima-kun" smiled the woman with short brown hair. "You're really coming along. Why don't we stop here for today? Do you need help getting back into bed?"

Shima shook his head. "No thanks. I'll be fine."

"Ok" the nurse stood up and headed towards the exit. "Same time tomorrow? I'll have them bring Takumi-chan down now."

"Ok…thankyou." And with that the physio-therapist bowed and left the room. Shima sighed. Even though he knew his movement was improving, it was still incredibly painful to use his right arm and both his hands. He was able to have Takumi balancing on his arm for longer and could somewhat manage to support his head but after about half an hour, the pain became too much. Not only that, but his hands would also start to shake. Not wanting anything to happen to his son, it was then that Shima would hand him over to whoever was sitting next to him.

The platinum blonde stared at his right hand. His casts had been removed and his fingers were only bandaged. Underneath, scars ran along his skin, the length of each finger and along the underside of his right arm. The majority of his fingers had been broken in the attack. The doctors had told him that it could take a few months before he would be able to use them again but to what extent, they didn't know.

After another deep breath, Shima began curling his fingers inwards. Usually he would get to about half-way before he was told to stretch them out again. However, despite the pain, Shima continued to slowly curl his fingers towards his palm. He bit his lip as the pain increased. It felt like someone had set his hand on fire. A bead of sweat dripped down his face and his head began to hurt. When it became too much, he relaxed his right hand and sat back into his chair. His breathing was heavy, his face was dripping and his hands had started to shake. He could feel his head pulsing.

He took a deep breath and closed his eyes. He refused to cry. He refused to be beaten. There was no way he was going to give up so easily. A couple of minutes later, the door opened and his regular nurse entered carrying his son. And in that moment, everything seemed that little bit better.

"Wow" said Sawada, staring at the scan in his hand. "It actually looks like a baby."

Kise laughed. "I'm glad you said that!"

Sawada looked up from the scan and at Kise's stomach. "It doesn't seem real. That the thing on the picture is actually inside your stomach."

"Yeah, I know what you mean."

"Well, there's not long left now right? You'll soon have your baby in your arms. Will you miss being pregnant?"

Kise thought about it for a second. He had never been asked that before."Yeah, I think I will. But who knows?"

Sawada smiled. He then returned his gaze back to the scan. The wavy haired brunette fell silent. Although Kise was getting used to his friend's quirks, there were times, like now, when he still couldn't help but feel slightly uncomfortable. Kise wasn't great with silence at the best of times but the way in which Sawada would stop talking and look at something so intently continued to unnerve the blonde. However, as always, just when Kise didn't think he could cope any longer, Sawada would snap out of it.

"Exciting times, right?" he said, passing the scan back across the table.

Kise nodded. However, before he could say anything else, a lad wearing a red and black chequered beanie joined their table, slumping into the chair between Sawada and Kise.

"You ok, Kontaro?"asked Sawada.

Kontaro Tohru was one of Sawada's closest friends. When he first met him, Kise wasn't too sure what to make of the short-haired blond. But after getting to know more about him, the more Kise seemed to like the guy. Despite the fact that he'd recently been suspended for setting toilet rolls on fire, he wasn't actually a bad guy once you got to know him.

Kontaro didn't answer Sawada's question. Instead, he picked up the scan in the middle of the table and looked at it closely. With one eyebrow raised he said, "looks like an alien."

Kise burst out laughing. "Thanks Kontaro. I'm sure the Bump would be made up to hear you say that."

Kontaro shrugged and handed the scan back to Kise. He then turned to Sawada and asked, "have you heard from Mibushi?"

Sawada shook his head. "Have you?"

"No" replied Kontaro, head slumped on his folded arms. "It's been days man, what's he doing? He's supposed to be keeping an eye on me but because he's gone AWOL I now have some freckled face, nervous wreck from 1B following my every move."

"Who?"

Kontaro nodded towards the bookshelves on their right. Kise and Sawada followed his nod and spotted a small boy with brown curly hair and glasses peering from behind one of the shelves.

Sawada laughed. "He probably thinks you're gonna set him on fire or something."

"Ha ha very funny."

"Aww what's the matter, you missing your favourite boy?"

"Shut up. I'm just worried that's all. He's never missed school for this long."

Kise was slightly confused. "Mibushi? What's happened?"

"Probably nothing," replied Sawada, leaning back into his chair. "He's just not been in school since it re-opened. He's probably got something going on at home. His mum likes her booze."

"Oh... have you tried getting a hold of him?"

"I haven't but Kontaro has."

Kontaro nodded. "And when I went to his, no one answered. It's just strange that's all."

The bell rang.

"Ah well," yawned Sawada as he stood up and stretched. "I'm sure your BFF will be back before you know it. We should get going. Later Kise-kun."

"Yeah, bye." And with that, Kise watched as the pair made their way out of the library, closely followed by the nervous guy with curly hair.

Touou basketball team were in the middle of a practice match with one of the neighbouring schools. They were currently up by 20 points with Aomine slamming the ball into the net, swiftly making it 22.

Aomine's agent was sat in the stands. "So, what do you think?"

The bald guy sat next to him replied, "he's good, I'll give him that. I'm not completely cut off from the world that I don't know who the Generation of Miracles are. But I've never seen one this close. I've always classed them as no-good, arrogant teenagers who've been given too much too soon." Coach Nakahara waited a moment before continuing. "But he clearly has talent. And drive. He could easily handle things on his own, but he is relying on his team-mates. I like a player who doesn't act like a God."

Right at that moment, Aomine chose to flip the ball over his head and into the basket. Shiro rolled his eyes.

Nakahara chuckled. "He likes to show off doesn't he?"

"He's a good kid," replied Shiro. "He deserves a lot more than people give him credit for."

Nakahara sighed. "I've seen enough." He then got up ready to leave.

"Wait, you're leaving? Don't you want to talk to him?"

"Not right now. Have him come by the gym some time. I'd like to see how he copes with the rest of the guys first." As Nakahara approached the door, he turned back to Shiro and said, "his boyfriend…the pregnant one…"

"Kise-kun…"

"Yeah. Tell him to come along to. If he's up to it of course."

Shiro couldn't help but feel a little suspicious. "Why?"

Nakahara shrugged. "Family is important. Good-day Shiro-san." And with that, Nakahara bowed and left the gym.

The whistle blew and the game ended.

Coach Nakahara pulled up outside the old gym. The place was hardly used anymore. The bald 55 year old had managed to convince the owner to lone him the place for cheap a few times a week. It wasn't much, but it was enough.

He got out of his car and walked towards the entrance. Waiting for him, leaning against the wall, was the team captain, dressed in his purple and black Panther's tracksuit.

"Thought you were working today?" Nakahara asked the 24 year old.

"I finished early" he replied. "Thought I'd swing by and get thing's started. The guys are inside warming up. So… how did it go?"

"It was…interesting. He's very talented. I haven't exactly made up my mind yet. I want to see how he interacts with you guys before I decide. But if everything works out…something very special could be about to happen."

That night, Kise and Aomine went to visit Shima and baby Takumi in the hospital. They had been told that the pair of them were out of the danger zone and that it wouldn't be long before Shima would be able to take his baby home.

"He's so amazing Shima-kun," Kise gleamed, looking down at the baby in his arms. "I'm so jealous."

Everyone in the room laughed.

"You'll have your own soon enough" Shima replied.

"Yeah, but every time I see and hold him, it makes me so impatient!" Aomine grinned and reached over to place a kiss on the side of his boyfriend's head. Kise couldn't take his eyes of Takumi who had his fingers wrapped around Kise's little finger. Being two months premature, the little guy was still rather small and didn't completely fit into his baby grows. His hair was dark and there was lots of it, the ends beginning to curl just like Shima's did.

"At least you've got plenty of practice for when The Bump arrives" smiled Tamaki.

"I could do this all day" said Kise.

Watching his boyfriend hold baby Takumi filled Aomine with warmth and joy. There was nothing more precious. And it was in those moments, when he couldn't wait for their own baby to be born so he would get to see it every day.

"Oh no…" said Kise, noting the now familiar reddening of Takumi's cheeks. "Looks like somebody wants feeding." And as if on cue, Takumi opened his mouth, scrunched his eyes together and started to cry. Tamaki reached underneath the hospital bed and placed the usual pillow on top of Shima's lap. Kise then stood up and gently placed baby Takumi on his father's lap.

"Are you sure about this?" asked Tamaki.

Shima nodded. "I can do this. And…if I can't…you can just take over."

Tamaki smiled and nodded. She then picked up the bottle sat on top of the cabinet and placed it in her nephew's hand. Shima's left arm wasn't broken and the fingers on his left hand weren't as damaged as the ones on his right. The nurses had told him that if he wanted to try and feed his son, he would have to use his left hand with someone holding Takumi's head for support.

Tamaki stood to the side of her nephew and gently propped up Takumi's head. Shima took a deep breath and slowly wrapped his fingers around the bottle. He raised his arm and lowered the bottle in front of Takumi's mouth. Eager lips greeted the bottle and the room was filled with silence once more.

"There you go little guy" Shima reassured. "Drink up."

The room was quiet as baby Takumi guzzled away. Shima did not take his eyes off his son. He could feel the pain beginning to increase in his fingers but he did not let it show. He was going to do this. He was fed up of not being able to feed his own baby.

Looking into the face of his precious boy, knowing that he was alright and there in his arms, made Shima forget about the pain. Even though he couldn't remember what had happened that night, the thought of almost losing his baby terrified him. Sometimes he would wake up in the middle of the night, panicking, needing to make sure Takumi was safe. Knowing that he was, made everything that little bit easier.

"Wow…that's almost a full bottle. Where does this appetite come from?" joked Tamaki as she took the bottle from her nephew's hand and placed it back on the cabinet. "You were the fussiest baby Takashi. Took you ages to figure out how to use a bottle."

Shima laughed. "He's a growing boy. He has a large appetite."

"He does indeed."

Tamaki then moved forward to pick Takumi up in order to wind him.

"I can do it" Shima stopped her.

"Are you sure?"

He nodded. "I just…might need a little help."

"Of course."

Kise held Aomine's hand and the pair watched quietly as Tamaki helped prop baby Takumi onto Shima's chest. Shima couldn't move his right arm so he used his left and gently began to rub his son's back with Tamaki helping keep Takumi in place.

Kise couldn't help but smile. And neither could Shima. The feeling of his baby being so close was incredible. And indescribable.

And that was when it happened; when his head started to hurt. Shima chose to ignore it at first but the pain just carried on increasing.

"Takashi?" said Tamaki, "you ok? You've gone a little pale."

"I'm fine" Shima managed to reply. "I've just got a head ache." Shima was starting to feel sick. His head was throbbing and his vision was blurring. His head had been sore since the attack but it had never felt this bad. He had no idea what was going on or why it was getting worse but there was one thing he knew for sure. "Take him off me" he urged. It took a moment before anyone did anything. "Take him!"

Tamaki rushed forward and scooped Takumi out of Shima's arms. It was in that moment when the platinum blonde felt like his head had exploded.

"Takashi?! What's happening?!"

"I'll go get a doctor!" urged Aomine as he ran from the room. Machines around them started going off. Takumi started to cry. Shima was writhing on the hospital bed, blood dripping from his nose.

It all happened so suddenly and before anyone knew what was happening, Shima was being rushed to the emergency room.

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

"Is he ok?" asked Keiji as they walked down the corridor.

"I don't know" replied Kise, the worry evident in his voice. "We had to leave. Tamaki text me when he was out of the emergency room, but he was still under."

"So they don't know what caused it?"

Kise shook his head. "I don't think so. It was so sudden it was scary. I've never seen anything like that before."

"You look exhausted. Maybe you should go home?"

Kise chuckled slightly. "You sound like my dad and Aominecchi. But no. If I'm not here I'll just be sat at home thinking about it. At least I can keep my mind off it here."

Keiji didn't say anything. In all his years of knowing Kise, he never realised how strong his friend really was. He just wished there was something he could do to help.

"Kise-kun!"

Keiji and Kise stopped walking and turned around.

"Sawada?" said Kise.

Sawada? thought Keiji. Oh. Keiji watched as the wavy haired brunette came trotting towards them. He wasn't sure exactly when he and Kise had become friends but Keiji didn't trust the third year in the least. There was something…off with the guy.

"You ok man?" Sawada asked Kise. "You look a little pale."

"I'm fine. Just a little under the weather. Do you mind if we cancel today's session after school? There's somewhere I've got to go."

"No not at all, you do what you've gotta do." Sawada's attention then went over Kise's shoulder. "Well I can't believe it. Look who's finally decided to show up! Kontaro, Mibushi! Over here!"

Kontaro? Mibushi? Who are they? Keiji followed Sawada's gaze and spotted the two guys walking towards them. He recognised the one with the short blonde hair and black and white beanie as one of Sawada's gang. He was also notorious for his love of anything flammable. Just another idiot.

Keiji's eyes suddenly went wide. "You!"

Everyone stopped talking and looked to where Keiji was pointing.

"Me?" Kontaro questioned, "what about me?"

"Not you…the guy behind you!"

They all turned to look at Mibushi. The black haired boy didn't say anything.

"Mibushi?" queried Kontaro. "What about him?"

Keiji wasn't sure at first but now he was certain. There was no doubt. This was the guy who had run into him, the night Shima was attacked.
