It was almost unbearable to see her this way. He knew that he was the cause of her pain. The only way to absolve it would be to betray his own feelings, now and forever. That he did not believe he could do.
"I have waited for you."
"Arwen. I am sorry."
"I know that your love for me remains. I know it."
He wanted to leave. To take turn to the woods and never return to this beautiful place.
"I am in love with Legolas," he said firmly. He needed to say it aloud though he knew it would hurt to hear. Her eyes pierced his own as he watched her cry. It took all he had not to reach out and brush them away. He could not be a source of comfort when he was the dagger.
"What has he done to cast such a spell on you? What does he possess that causes so many to fall at his feet? He does not love you," she shook her head sadly, pitying him. "I would have given my life for you and still you choose him."
"I am sorry," he said simply, his shoulder falling forward as he walked away, a coward.
