Chapter 43: It's Your Birthday, You Can Have Whatever You Want

Genesis woke up and stretched before she looked over at Haylee in the bed next to hers. She had finally managed to sleep through the night without screaming or jumping in bed with her Mothers.

She was proud of herself.

Today was also her fourteenth birthday. Last year she was certain she wouldn't live to see this day.

She smiled.

Olivia opened the door holding a large cupcake with a single candle perched on top. "Happy Birthday baby girl!"

Genesis sat up grinning at her Mother. "Thank you Mommy!" She threw her arms around Olivia and kissed her cheek as she hugged her tightly.

"You're welcome, but I do hope you realize there's more than this in store for your day." Olivia said.

Genesis pulled back and gasped. "You mean you're gonna dedicate the whole day to me?" She asked.

Olivia sighed. She had been in foster care until last year, of course no one had ever celebrated her birthday. She schooled her features. "Yes baby. Today is all about you. Now, eat this cupcake so you can take a shower and we can get started!" She said, patting Genesis' thigh before she left.

Genesis looked over at Haylee and mischievously before getting up and wiping frosting on her face. "Wake up butthead! It's my birthday!"

Haylee sat up instantly with wide eyes. "I'm up, I'm up." She stretched and yawned. "Happy birthday!"

"Thank you!" Genesis said. She licked some frosting off her cupcake with a huge grin. She was so happy.

Haylee rubbed her hand over her face to help her wake up, "Ugh! What the hell did you put on my face?" She grouches.

"Chill, it's just frosting! And it's my birthday so you can't get me back!" Genesis said, licking more frosting off her cupcake to emphasize.

"You better be glad it's your birthday Gen." Haylee said, rolling out of bed and stretching.

"I am! Dibs on the first shower!" Genesis shouted, running out of the bedroom and claiming said shower.

After both girls were showered and dressed they met Olivia and Alex in the living room.

Alex stepped towards Genesis and kissed her on the forehead, "Happy birthday sweetheart."

Genesis beamed, "Thank you Mama."

"What do you want to do today?" Alex asked.

"Can we go shopping?" Genesis asked timidly.

"Of course. Are you ready?" Alex said.

Genesis and Haylee nodded.

"Ok, let's go." Olivia said.

The little family arrived at the mall in the afternoon and it was buzzing with life.

"There's so many stores Mom." Genesis said in wonder as she looked around. None of her other families had taken her to the mall, she had gotten her clothes from discount stores or hand-me-downs.

"We can go in as many as you want." Olivia said.

"Can I get some new shoes?" Genesis asked, biting her lip nervously.

"You can have whatever you want." Alex said.

She received a glare from Olivia, and smiled widely. She shared a look from Haylee and grabbed Genesis's hand.

"Why don't you come with me and let me spoil you rotten, while your Mom and Haylee pick out presents for you?" Alex said.

Genesis looked up at Olivia silently asking if it was ok.

"Go on baby girl. Spend some time with Alex." Olivia said.

After the group separated, Genesis started to get suspicious. "Why did we split up from Mom and Haylee?"

Alex smiled. Her girl was so smart. "I'm gonna let you in on a little secret. I know that today is your birthday, but I was wondering how you would feel if we became a real family. I want to ask your Mom to marry me."

Genesis was confused. "I thought we already were a family?"

"We are a family sweetheart, I just want to make it official. I want to marry your Mom and adopt you." Alex explained.

"I guess that's ok." Genesis said with a smile.

"Great! You can help me pick out the ring and we can get something for you too." Alex said, ushering them inside of a jewelry shop.

They started looking in the display cases, trying to find the perfect one.

Genesis started eying a gold band with a square princess cut diamond surrounded by two emeralds. "Mama?" She called Alex over.

Alex peeked into the glass to look at the ring Genesis was pointing at. "It's beautiful sweetheart." She said. "Excuse me?" She asked one of the jewelers over.

"Yes ma'am?" A young woman said.

"I'd like to see this one please." Alex said.

The girl took the box out and placed it on the counter.

Alex and Genesis stared at it for a few minutes, before looking at each other with huge grins on their faces.

"This is the one!" They said at the same time.

The woman smiled. "Alright if you come with me, I'll be happy to ring it up for you." She said.

"I'm not finished with my purchasing, but if you could take that up I'd appreciate it." Alex said. She looked down at Genesis. "Sweetheart, I want you to choose something for yourself."

Genesis walked away from the rings and headed for the necklaces. She checked out all the lockets before she saw the one she wanted.

It was gold, heart-shaped and had small diamonds outlining the heart shape. "Mama, could I have this one?" She asked timidly.

"Yes, it's perfect for you." Alex said with a smile.

She called the attendant over and had her take the necklace out of the case.

"Will this be all?" The woman asked.

"Yes, thank you." Alex said.

"Getting engaged?" The woman asked.

"Yes, I asked my girlfriend before but I didn't have a ring. Hopefully this gives me a different answer." Alex says with a chuckle.

After they all regrouped and ate some lunch, they headed for the car to go to the cake shop.

"What kind of cake do you want baby girl?" Olivia asked.

"Could I have an ice cream cake?" Genesis asked.

"Of course! Let's go see what kinds they have." Olivia said, placing a hand on Genesis's back and leading her to the counter.

Genesis went through her options and decided on a yellow cake with strawberry ice cream, covered in chocolate.

After the cake was ready, they stopped by Gen's favorite Chinese restaurant to order dinner and head for home.

"Ok, everyone get comfortable. The birthday girl wants a movie marathon. So, that's what she'll have." Olivia said, while she shrugged her jacket off.

They were spread out on the floor with the couch cushions, watching the second movie when Gen decided she wanted to have cake.

"Since it's cake time, maybe you should open your presents too." Alex said. She was starting to get nervous. She was going to propose right after Genesis blew out her candles.

"Ok! I'll open my presents too." Genesis said.

Olivia returned with the cake and set it on the coffee table. She had placed a number 14 candle in the cake. "Blow out your candle!" She said.

Genesis closed her eyes, made her wish and blew out the candle.

"What did you wish for?" Haylee asked.

"I can't tell you! But I already have something I've wished for, for the last thirteen years." Genesis said.

"Fine!" Haylee said. "Open your presents will ya?"

"Ok, ok." Genesis said.

Olivia placed the gift bag from her in front of her. "Open mine first."

Genesis unwrapped it and smiled. "A DVD player! Thanks Mommy!" She said, jumping into Olivia's arms.

"Your new flat screen is mounted on the wall in your room. You're welcome." She said squeezing Genesis lightly.

"Open mine next babe." Haylee said placing a small wrapped box in front of her.

Genesis unwrapped it and jumped into her girlfriends lap. "Thank you!" It was the newest iPod touch in pink.

"You're welcome." Haylee said grinning.

"Saving the best for last. You were with me when I bought your present, but there's more." Alex said revealing the locket they bought earlier.

"It's so pretty!" Haylee exclaimed.

"It's beautiful baby girl." Olivia said.

"I had it engraved while you weren't looking. Read it." Alex said.

Genesis opened the lock it and read the engraving inside, "No matter where you go, we'll always be with you. Love Mama."

A lone tear fell down her cheek. "Thank you Mama." She said climbing into Alex's lap and burying her face in her neck.

"You're welcome sweetheart." Alex said. "Could you get up?" She asked.

Genesis got up and sat back on the couch cushion next to Haylee.

Alex walked over to Olivia and got down on one knee. She grabbed Olivia's left hand. "Olivia, it took years for us to admit how we felt for each other. Then when things were finally going great between us, I ran away. And I'm so sorry baby. I know I asked you to marry me before when I was drunk, but I meant it. So, here I am - sober and I'm asking you again..." She pulled the ring out of her pocket and opened the box. "...Olivia Benson will you marry me?" She asked.

Olivia had tears streaming down her face. She looked at Haylee and Genesis's wide smiles on their faces. "You two knew?!" She asked.

"Yep!" Genesis and Haylee said.

"Liv, is that a yes?" Alex asked.

"Yes! Yes I'll marry you! Put the cuff on me!" Olivia said.

Alex slid the ring on her finger, stood up, cupped Olivia's cheeks and claimed her mouth.

"Happy Birthday Genesis!" Haylee said.

"It's one I'll never forget." Genesis said laying her head on Haylee's shoulder. She watched her Moms kiss. She was happy. She knew she was safe and loved. And she believed she deserved it.
