Lou/Miranda (Easter Special)
"Mom, do we have to go to church today?" I asked again, maybe for the tenth time in the last hour. And my mother's answer was always the same.
"Yes, we have to, Holly. Now, button up that shirt. We don't want to look like we're going to the beach, don't we?" I sighed and buttoned the first button of my shirt.
"No, Mom" I replied, kind of giving up. I didn't want to go to the church! I wanted to be with the other kids of the neighborhood! They had it easy!
"Still mad because you can't go to the Hunt?" My older brother Derek whispered at me. I nodded, feeling really frustrated.
"Every year we're invited and every year, Mom says no..." I complained to my brother "Did they do something bad? Is because they're college students? Or because they're not Christian?" I questioned him, not understanding fully the reason behind why my Mom forbids me to go to the biggest Easter Scavenger Hunt of the city.
"I don't think they do something bad, Holly... I think is because they're not Christian" I huffed at my brother's speculations.
"Well, that's a stupid reason for it" I concluded, crossing my arms and sitting down in the living room couch. I could see the kids running pass our windows, baskets in hand and laughing at each other. I wish I was a normal kid...
"OK, people! Let's go or we'll be late for the procession" Dad announced, grabbing his coat. I got up and shrugged off my dress and followed my family outside the house.
Church was boring! We had to sit there while the priest did his monolog about Jesus Christ's last meal. I think he read the entire freaking Bible.
"I really thought I was gonna die of boredom" I whispered to my brother, when we got up to leave the church.
"Well, I'm dying in hunger, like right now... Does that count?" he joked with me. I covered my mouth to hid a giggle and nodded.
"I'm hungry too" I admitted to him "You think is gonna take long?"
"Probably, why?" he raised an eyebrow. I bit my lip, not sure if to share with him my plan.
"I was thinking that, maybe, I could sneak out to the Hunt after lunch... You know, say that'll be taking a nap for a few hours..." I explained to him, not sure if my plan had any flaws.
"You really think it's a good idea?"
"What choice do I have left?" I recognized to him "I ask, they say no. I beg, plead and promise and they still say no. Only thing left is becoming a rebel"
"On Easter? Alright, then... I'll cover for you" I looked at him, smiling.
"Really?! Thank you, Derek!" I thanked him, hugging him "I promise I'll share my bounty with you tonight!"
"That's not necessary, kiddo" he disagreed with me "Just have fun for a few hours and don't forget your cellphone, OK?" I nodded. I couldn't believe I was gonna do it!
As soon as I got home, Mom started to cook what was left for Easter lunch. All types of pastries and chocolate, for when the rest of my family arrived. I helped her on purpose, so later I could have an excuse.
"Now, remember kids, I expect you to behave today and no disrespect" Mom warned us. For her, there was nothing but perfection.
"Yes, Mom" we chorused, nodding.
Ding, dong!
"Those must be your grandparents!" Mom announced, going to the door and opening it. But, she took a surprise when she didn't find them. At the door were two girl, who doubled Derek's age.
One of them had brown hair and green eyes. She was wearing a green light dress, with a jacket on her and a basket of olive branches in her hand. She was smiling at my Mom.
The other girl was the polar opposite. Her hair was totally out of place, which reminded me of a prank I once pulled to my cousin, were I dyed her hair with Skittles. Her hair was like that, a streak of each color. Her eyes were the same, but I guess she was wearing contacts, because they stayed in a light purple, almost lily. She was wearing jeans and a jacket and in her hand was a basket of chocolate bunnies.
"Good morning?" Mom greeted them, very confused.
"Good morning to you too, ma'am" the girl in the green dress replied back. Her accent was slightly southern "And Happy Easter" she finished, pulling out a branch of her basket.
"What is this?" Derek asked, curious, taking the branch in his hands.
"That's a branch of olive of our sacred olive tree" the same girl replied "We even had to ask permission to take a few branches-"
"Did you know that the olive is the most important tree of all history?" the other girl interrupted her, looking at me. I shook my head. I knew the olive branch meant something around Easter, but I wasn't that into religion to remember it.
"Of course" Mom answered to her, her head high in pride "The olive is the tree that the christians used to greet Jesus in his way to Jerusalem"
"It's also the tree of peace, the tree of wisdom and the tree of victory" the same girl winked at me.
"Why?" I asked, totally curious.
"Well-"
"It's not that important, Holly" Mom cut her. I glared at her, but she ignored me "Is there anything we can do for you, girls?"
"Well, I'm Miranda Gardiner and this is my best friend-"
"And future sister-in-law" the other girl added, smirking at her.
"-Lou Ellen. We live five blocks away" I recognized those names right away. They were the girls who planned the Easter Hunt!
"And?" Mom pressured, raising an eyebrow.
"Well, we're wondering if you'd lie to join the neighborhood for a massive Easter lunch. Also, the kids are invited to our Easter Hunt-"
"You're very nice, but we're not interested" I lowered my head, between sad and embarrassed by my Mom's bluntiness. The girls were anything but nice to us. The least we could do was being nice back.
"Oh. We totally understand, specially with the short notice" Lou waved her hand, like it wasn't a big deal "We're grateful you had the time to let us now and please accept the olive branch as an Easter present"
"Thank you" Derek and I thanked them, before Mom could closed the door.
"You should never mingle with that kind of people" Mom stated, before walking back to the kitchen. I shared a look with Derek, confused.
"What does she mean by that?" I wondered.
"She's talking about people who aren't Christian" he rolled his eyes.
"Then, our world is gonna be smaller" I mumbled, walking to the living room.
After lunch, I excused myself to go take my 'nap'. Mom agreed, claiming I had helped her a lot cooking lunch with her. I smirked mentally, not believing she bought my lie.
"Mom, can I join Holly for a nap?" I heard Derek asking. The next I know, Derek is sprinting up the stair and smirking at me "Hurry, we have only three hours before the coffee" I nodded and put my cellphone's alarm. We sneaked out from the window and we run all the way down to the Hunt. We saw Miranda and Lou, talking with some of our neighbors, even some that were at church with us.
"Mom won't believe it even if she sees it" I mumbled, hearing Derek agreeing.
"Hey, guys! You made it!" Lou greeted us, with two baskets, one in each hand.
"We made it?" Derek repeated, frowning. Lou rolled her eyes.
"I immediately figured you guys wanted to come to the Hunt, but your Mom wouldn't let you..." she handed us the baskets to us "How long do you have?"
"Three hours" I said, sure. She nodded back at us.
"Go get some eggs, kids" she encouraged us, before walking back to greet other people. I turned to see my brother, excited.
"What if someone sees us?" I questioned, suddenly scared.
"We'll make sure we don't. Ready to share your bounty, matey?" he mocked me, trying to imitate a pirate. I smiled at him.
"Only if you're willing to share, matey" I replied, before running away from him.
This is the best. Easter. Ever!
