Chapter Forty-Nine

Dean looks over when he hears someone walk in, smiling when he sees that it's Kaitlyn. He watches as she sets a bag down on the chair before leaning down and kissing him.

"Hi," Kaitlyn says.

"Hi." Dean gestures to the bag. "What's in the bag?"

"Photo albums." She smiles as she pulls the books out of the bag. "Paige had mentioned that seeing them may help you remember more."

He nods as he takes the books. "Couldn't hurt, right?" He opens the top book, smiling when he sees a picture of them in what looks to be a hospital bed. "Was this after I was shot?"

She nods. "Yeah. That was the day you ended up being released." She sits down on the edge of the bed. "Dean, we need to talk."

He frowns. "Okay." He looks at her. "Is everything okay?"

She nods. "Yeah." She smiles as she takes his hand. "I just think there's something you should know. You were on the phone with me when the accident happened. You called me after a text that Eve sent to you."

"Eve texted me?"

"Well, from my phone. I was craving pickles and bananas. So she texted you to let you know that."

He wrinkles his nose. "Pickles and bananas?" He looks at her again. "Seth asked me if you were pregnant."

"So you called me and asked me just that. Before I could answer you guys were hit." She looks down at their hands and runs her thumb over his palm. "I don't think I've ever been that scared. You didn't respond when I called your name. And then I heard Roman come over the radio. I thought… I thought I'd lost you." She wipes her eyes with her free hand. "I'm getting off track. I'm sorry." She sniffles as she meets Dean's gaze once again. "The answer is yes. Yes, I'm pregnant." She watches him for his reaction. "Please say something."

He squeezes her hand softly. "You're pregnant." He smiles. "We're having a baby."

She smiles. "We're having a baby." She leans down and kisses him."

Dean drops her hand and reaches up, resting his hand on the side of her neck. "Does Kelsey know?"

Kaitlyn nods. "She was with me when I found out. We hadn't known too long. We had actually planned on doing a little surprise thing for you. But then Eve sent that text and we knew we'd have to tell you." She grins. "I was actually craving bananas and pickles."

He chuckles at that. "How fare along?"

"About ten weeks."

"How long have you known?"

"Six weeks."

"How long has it been since the accident?"

"Almost a month."

He frowns. "A month?"

"You weren't awake for a while."

"Right. Show me your stomach."

"What?"

"I want to see your stomach."

"Dean…"

"Katie…"

She smiles at the name before shifting and lifting her shirt. "Happy?"

"Yes." He reaches over, resting his hand on her stomach. He smiles as he curls his fingers slowly. "This is amazing."

Kaitlyn can't help but smile even more as she watches him. She had known he would be happy, but with everything that's been going on she wasn't sure how he'd react right now. She's glad it's for the better. Before either can say anything, the nurse is walking in. Kaitlyn lets her shirt fall over her stomach.

"Mrs. Ambrose, are you stripping for my patient?" the nurse, Jackie, asks.

Kaitlyn blushes a little. "He wanted to see my stomach. He just found out that I'm pregnant."

Jackie smiles. "Well, congratulations."

Dean smiles. "Thanks."

"Now, I hate to break up the happy couple, but we need to get you out of bed."

"Already?" Kaitlyn asks. "Is he ready for that?"

Jackie smiles at Kaitlyn. "He'll be in a wheel chair for the most part. We're going to take him down to the therapy room and will get him up. But we'll take it slow."

"It's not too soon?"

"Katie," Dean says.

"I'm sorry."

Jackie grins. "It's okay. You are not the first wife to question it."

"How long before I'll be able to go back to work?" Dean asks.

"You are not even asking that right now," Kaitlyn says practically glaring at him.

"Katie, I'm going to have to go back eventually."

"Right. And right now isn't the time to be worrying about it. Worry about it when you can get out of bed on your own."

"Really? You're going to throw that at me?"

"Yes! Dean, you were in a horrible accident. I almost lost you. They had to revive you on two different occasions, and that what I know of. I am not letting you think about going back to work right now."

"All right, I think it's time to get you down there, Dean." Jackie smiles at Kaitlyn. "You're welcome to stick around here, but it'll be about an hour."

Kaitlyn nods. "Okay. I think I'll head home."

Jackie nods. "I'll give you two a moment." She steps out of the room again.

Kaitlyn sighs as she looks at Dean. "Do you want me to come back?"

"You can do whatever you want," Dean answers.

"Dean…" She wipes her eyes.

"No, I didn't mean it like that." He sighs. "Come here." He holds his hand out.

She walks over and takes his hand. "I'm sorry. I know you have to go back to work at some point. It just scares me to think about it right now."

"I know, Katie. But I promise you, just like last time, I won't go back if I'm not ready."

She smiles a little. "You remember that?"

He nods. "I do. Go home, Kaitlyn. Get to bed early. You are exhausted. You are still going to work. I know you have been, but that's still going on, right?"

"Yeah. They did tell me if I needed any more time to let them know. But I think it's good for me to be there. I'd go crazy not having anything to do."

"Good. So go home and stay home. I'll call you after I get back into the room." He tugs her down and kisses her softly. "I love you."

"I love you too. You better call me."

"I will." He kisses her again. "Go."

"I'm going." She smiles as she backs away. "Bye." She gives him a small wave before walking out of the room. She finds Jackie standing at the nurse's station. "He's all yours."

"Okay." Jackie squeezes Kaitlyn's shoulder. "You okay?"

Kaitlyn nods. "Yeah. I just hate seeing him like this."

"I know. It's going to get better."
