Chapter 52: Dean
Miles, Rachel, Charlie and Aaron headed out before us. We didn't tell them, we didn't want them to feel bad for missing it. I was excited, but I did suggest to Kayleigh that we wait. After all I felt it right that Miles and maybe even Bass should be there but she said she'd rather do it without them.
"They'll groan and grumble the whole way" she had said. "It's not their kind of thing"
So I didn't push it any further. Not long after we said goodbye to Aaron and they all had left, me and Kayleigh went upstairs to get ready. We washed ourselves as best we could from the bucket of water I brought from the creek. Then grabbing the nicer clothes I had gotten in town, I changed in our room while Kayleigh dressed in the bathroom. It wasn't much, a pair of light tan khaki's and a white button up. I changed quickly then ran down the hall towards the bathroom.
"Kayleigh?" I knocked on the door. "Are you ready?"
"Uh, yeah..." she opened the door only a bit and poked her head out. Her hair falling in long waves over her shoulder as she glanced at me and bit back her lip.
"Don't laugh okay?"
"I'm not gonna laugh" I said...as I laughed.
"Dean"
"I promise"
She pulled the door open wider to reveal herself. She was wearing a short, white dress. It was cut like a tank but over it was a shear white slip, the sleeves coming just over her shoulders. The length came down to her mid thigh, she wore a bare of tattered grey ballet flats. She was biting her lip again. "Go on...Tell me how horrible it is" she said.
"You're right, you look absolutely horrid and I don't know what I was thinking"
She put put her hands on her hips and glared at me as I just stood there laughing at her.
"You look beautiful, Kayleigh Marie Evans" I said inching closer so that my hands moved to her waist, gripping the thin fabric of her dress in my fingers.
"Now you're just teasing me"
"You're always beautiful to me, Catnip"
"I would kiss you but we should save it for later"
She smiled up at me and laughed. "What?" I questioned as I furrowed my eyebrows at her.
"You need to comb your hair" she replied, running her fingers through the front of it. She slid her fingers over my forehead then gently down my cheek, stroking my skin gently. "You look very handsome though"
"This will be the first and last time I ever dress like this so make a mental note"
"And I appreciate it" she said and kissed my cheek lightly.
"I thought no kissing?"
"That doesn't count" she whispered as she grabbed my hand in hers.
"We need to go before curfew" I told her and we headed down stairs and out the door. The sun was going to go down soon so we rode into town, Kayleigh behind me on the short bay horse, her arms wrapped tightly around my waist. We rode up to the small church. People here still went to church every sunday, me and Kayleigh had never been religious but we had went once. We had never been to church before and there wasn't much to do when we first got here. I dismounted quickly then grabbing her by the waist I pulled her off the horse and into my arms, her hands gripping my shoulders as she looked at me.
"You can still back out, you know" I smiled at her and let her slip slowly from my grip.
"No way" she smiled back, letting her feet touch the ground and I took her hand again as we walked into the small church.
"Do you have rings?" Pastor Landry asked us.
"Yes" I replied.
"Well, we only have the one" Kayleigh said, pulling ring from her pocket that was no longer on the chain of her necklace from which was hanging outside of her white dress now.
"Actually" I smiled and reached into my pants pocket and picked out the small object, letting it lay in my palm as I reached my hand out to her. Tears started to form at the corners of her eyes as she picked up the tiny, gold tinted band with the tiny pink jewel. "But..."
"I thought you'd should have your own"
"How did you even pay for this?" she asked, looking up at me sadly.
"Don't worry about it" I replied.
She placed it back in my hand as Pastor Landry continued the vows. I slid the new ring onto her finger, her hands were shaking but my grip steadied them. Then it was her turn as she slid my fathers wedding band onto my finger. More things were said. I can barely remember saying them as my eyes were locked on hers.
"You may kiss the bride"
"Hm?" I said glancing back up at Pastor Landry, not having heard what he said.
"You can kiss me now, you idiot" Kayleigh smirked. I leaned in, my arms moving around her as I dipped her back and smoothly eased my lips over hers. Her arms tightly around my neck even as I pulled her back up. She wouldn't let go, the biggest smile on her face even as I turned and shook hands with Pastor Landry.
"Thank you"
"It was no trouble" he replied with a gratifying smile. "We need more good things to happen around here"
I nodded in agreement and then picked Kayleigh up in my arms, carrying her back outside to the horse.
"How do you feel?" I asked her as I set her down beside the burly animal.
"It doesn't feel much different" she replied, her fingers fiddling with the collar of my shirt. "But good...it feels good"
"Hey! You two!"
I turned to see three patriots walking up to us. "I know curfew, we're leaving right now" I replied, realizing only now had much darker it had gotten.
"No" one of the soldiers replied. "You're coming with us"
"Why?" I asked calmly, but I reached my arm back to push Kayleigh behind me. She gripped my arm piercingly tight, her nails digging in painfully but I ignored it.
"Come with us, now" he said, slightly raising his gun to show me how serious he was.
"We didn't do anything wrong" Kayleigh spoke up. The soldier nodded to the two standing behind him and they came forward to grab us.
"No!" Kayleigh yelled when they pulled us a part, trying to drag us in different directions. I saw a flicker of her old self, that person who would fight no matter how desperate the situation. She tried to punch and kick the soldier, clawing at his arms as his grip tightened over her wrists.
"Don't hurt her!" I yelled as it took the other two to restrain me. They pulled out hand cuffs and put them on me as I hopelessly watched the soldier struggling with Kayleigh.
"Kayleigh!" I yelled. "Look at me!"
"Kay! LOOK AT ME!"
She stopped fighting the soldier, even he stopped and stared back at me as I remained calm, the cuffs tightening right to my wrists. I could already feel them cutting into my skin.
"Don't fight them" I told her as she stared blankly back at me. "It's going to be okay"
She looked confused, maybe even a little angry but she listened to me as the soldier started to pull her away again. Whatever was happening it must have something to do with Aaron and the others. Maybe they had gotten caught...They led Kayleigh to the court house where the patriots had set up. They brought me towards the jail, then stuck me in a cell, not even bothering to remove my handcuffs. So much for things getting better. So much for trying to make things better.
But if I knew anything its that Miles would get us out of this. If of course he wasn't captured himself. With my hands cuffed in front of me I leaned back against the wall as I sat atop the uncomfortably thin mattress of the small cot. They brought Kayleigh somewhere else, why? What was the point of that?
I wonder if they knew. If they knew about who Rachel and Miles really were then maybe they knew about Kayleigh too. About how she's Monroe's daughter, but then again how could they have known that? Someone must have ratted us out...but that means it was one of us who did.
"Dean"
I looked up towards the bars of my cell, looking straight into the eyes of the last person I wanted to see. "Alex"
"Come on, they have Kayleigh"
"You are going to get me out of here?"
"Yeah now move your ass before the guards come and check on you!"
As much as I didn't want Alex to be the one to get me out it was my only option. I don't know how he got the key to my cell let alone the handcuffs but he did and I didn't question it. We moved fast, sneaking out of the building through a back window that was no longer barred. He must have done that too.
"She's still in the court house" he whispered as we hid in the shadows of an alley across from the large building.
"What do they want with her?" I asked.
"They're interrogating her"
"For what?"
"Information on the where bouts of Monroe, Rachel and Miles Matheson"
We watched the court house. There was no way we were getting in unnoticed but then again...
"You have to go in and get her out" I told him.
"You're asking me?" he laughed.
"Yes because they'll stop me before I even get two feet to the door" I snapped back. "They won't notice you as a threat, we can jump a soldier and you can take his uniform. You can go in and slip out without anyone giving you a second glance"
"And why should I do anything for you?"
"You aren't" I replied hotly, "If you really care about her then you'll do this for her"
He was a little too happy about the fact that I was asking for his help. He was milking the situation for all its worth and I knew this would come back to bite me in the ass later but I couldn't think about that now. I had to think about Kayleigh and my unborn child.
"All right" he nodded. "Let's go make me a patriot"
