Chapter 52:

Jesse's POV:

*Ten Minutes Ago*

As I was walking out of class, I remembered Donald and I were meeting Beca and Stacie for lunch at Olive Garden. I felt hands force books out of mine, and I looked up to see the smiling Donald. "Not cool, man," I sighed and bent over to pick up the books.

"Accident. I meant to just scare you," he laughed and helped me. "My car is parked close. I'll drive." I nodded my head in agreement and we proceeded out towards the shiny Volvo.

When we got in the car, I turned the radio's volume up loud so we could clearly hear what was playing: Reckless Abandon by Blink 182. Donald and I were both singing the lyrics like nothing ever mattered.

On and on, reckless abandon

Something's wrong, this is gonna shock them

Nothing to hold on to

We'll use this song to lead you on

And break the truth with more bad news

We left a scar size extra large

Music solos were filling the car, and the song was coming out of our vocal chords like it was our job. Until all of a sudden, a heavy force came in contact with the passenger side of the car.

Beca's POV:

*Present Time*

Stacie and I literally ran the entire half mile to the hospital and got there in three minutes, believe it or not. We burst into the emergency room entrance and ran hurriedly to the desk. "J-Jess-Jesse…" my stuttering was freaking the nurse out.

"Ma'am I'm going to need you to calm down and-"

"Don't tell us to calm down, my fiancée is in the fucking emergency room!" I screamed. "Where's Jesse Swanson!"

"Room 58A," the nurse sounded terrified. Stacie and I ran down the hallway and tore our way through the crowds of people.

"58A!" Stacie shouted while pointing to a room. We ran as close as we could until we were stopped by a doctor.

"Authorized personnel only," he instructed.

"Fuck off," I pushed him out of the way and hit the door open. We saw Donald sitting in a chair next to Jesse.

"Donald!" Stacie yelped with cheer. "You're okay?"

"Yeah, Jesse had the harder hit. It's just my leg and a few cuts and bruises," he shrugged. Stacie knelt beside him and comforted him. I turned my focus back towards Jesse.

"Sorry Beca, he's still unconscious," Donald said with sorrow. I stayed silent, my eyes locked on Jesse. He looked so… broken. His eyes were closed shut, multiple cuts on his face, a cast around his right arm, and bruises could have covered his whole body.

"Did the doctors say anything?" I whimpered.

"They said they would keep him over night since he shows no sign of waking up," Donald replied. Just then, my hand that was intertwined with Jesse's felt a sudden movement; his fingers moved. Rapidly, his hang moved, too.

"Stacie get a doctor," I instructed. She ran out and brought a man who looked like he was pulled out of mid-conversation.

"Wh-What? What? What!" the doctor stumbled.

"He moved, he-he tightened his loose grip on my hand, his fingers danced, he's waking up. Jesse's waking up!" I screamed delightedly.

"I need you to move, ma'am," he gestured towards me. I got up quickly and chattered my teeth. "I think he is awake, he just doesn't know it yet. What would trigger him?" he looked at me like I would know the answer. I thought for a minute. I shooed him away from Jesse and I kneeled beside him, so my head was level with his. I slowly dipped my head and lightly bit his earlobes. His eyes shot open.

"Jesse!" I screamed. I gripped my hands on his neck and kissed him like he was revived. Well, he sort of was, anyway.

"Ow… Beca… What... Ow!" he groaned.

"Sorry," I apologized. I quickly got up and made sure he was okay.

"Ah," Jesse yelped in pain. "It's fine." The doctor still looked at him in awe.

"That was… remarkable..." he said. "How did you think of that?" he turned his attention toward me.

"I… um…" I didn't know how to respond without saying something way too awkward for the small hospital room.

"Yoga," Stacie coughed.

"What?" everyone said in unison, even Stacie herself.

"Anyway," the doctor started, "try not to get into any trouble. We'll keep him over night." He closed the door behind him, leaving me, Jesse, Stacie, and Donald alone.

"So how are you feeling?" I asked, running my fingers through Jesse's hair. He looked down at his crippled self.

"I've been better," he smiled weakly. "But the worst part, we never got Olive Garden." We all managed a few laughs.

"I'll be back in about thirty minutes," Stacie called out as she left the hospital room.

"Where's she going?" Donald asked.

"I don't know," I shook my head. Jesse played with the ring on my left finger and smiled. He carefully scooted over on the hospital bed and patted the empty space next to him, telling me to climb in with him. I did as he instructed and got as close as possible without hurting him. "You look like you were trampled by a herd of cattle."

"2007 SUV, actually," he laughed. I realized I had completely forgotten about Donald.

"Oh! Donald, a-are you okay?" I face-palmed.

"I'm fine, thanks for finally noticing," he scoffed.

"Sorry," I chuckled.

I noticed Jesse drifting off a few minutes later, and Donald doing the same. I softly kissed above his ear and laid my head down, as I was also beginning to fall asleep.

We all woke up with a start when Stacie came back. "FOOD!" she burst with excitement. Jesse woke up with a start and groaned in pain, again.

"What?" he blinked.

"I brought Olive Garden," Stacie said proudly.

"Really?"

"Yep. Eat up." She threw the bag on the bed and it landed on Jesse's leg. She hid her face in her hands after realizing what happened. Jesse cringed in pain as the bag of food made contact with his thigh. "Sorry!" she quickly took the bag off of him.

"It's fine," he opened one eye.

**Next Day**

Jesse and I had stayed overnight while Stacie and Donald left a few hours after we ate. Jesse was sleeping soundly, but I woke up to the sound of a child screaming. Not really on my bucket list, but it was interesting.

I turned on my side and cuddled closer to my sleeping fiancée, who was laying directly on his back. As I was staring into space, I started humming our song. Hums turned into words and before I knew it I was quietly singing Don't You (Forget About Me) by Simple Minds. I could see Jesse smiling in his sleep. I continued singing as quietly as possible until the doctor came in.

"Oh, you're awake," he noticed. I sat up a little. "We confirmed that the damage is mostly on his right side, where the other car hit. He has two fractured ribs, a broken arm, and a slight concussion. Overall, from the accident the police detected, the damage on him isn't bad. The ribs shouldn't hurt and the concussion won't be a huge pain, but his arm will definitely be bothersome. We can get him a cast when he wakes up and prescribe a pain medicine that you can pick up at your pharmacy. When he wakes up, just buzz us," he gestured to the red button on the bedside table.

I glanced at Jesse and slightly nodded. "Okay, thank you."

The doctor left the room and I breathed out louder than I wanted to. Let him sleep, I thought. I tried to think of something else to make time pass by. What song are we doing for…

"Shit!" I said too loudly. I covered my mouth in shock. Semi-finals! They were in four months. Will Jesse be okay? They always rehearse two months before… Great. Poor Jesse, I wish this didn't happen to him.

I felt a few fingers wrap around mine. I looked over at my partner and saw his eyes flutter open; he was awake.

"Good morning," he smiled. Jesse quickly frowned and rubbed his arm. "Ow."

"It's broken," I confirmed.

He inspected it more thoroughly. "How do you know?"

"The doctor came in about a half hour ago to check on you and he told me. You have two fractured ribs, a broken arm, and a minor concussion."

"Splendid," he added sarcastically. "Why don't I have a proper cast for it, then?"

I turned over and hit the red buzzer. Moments later a nurse came in. "You are ready, yes?" Her accent hinted her roots came from Romania.

"Am I getting a cast?"

"Yes," said the nurse. "Your, ah, girlfriend? Wife? ...she may come, too."

I got up from the bed as Jesse was rolled away into another room. I followed closely behind and sat in a chair close to him as we came to a stop. "The doctor will be with you shortly," the nurse concluded. Almost five minutes later, the doctor knocked and came through the door.

"Jesse Swanson, you're looking better," he said. "I'm Doctor Shea."

"Thanks. I guess I feel a little better…" said Jesse.

"So, what colour cast would you like?"

"There are colours?" he said with delight.

"Yes, of course," Doctor Shea chuckled. "Orange, pink, purple, blue, and dark gray."

Jesse thought for a minute. "I'll have blue."

"Excellent choice." Shea reached into a drawer and pulled out a royal blue ace bandage followed by the actual "cast" part. "This won't take but thirty minutes, at most."

Before long, Jesse was examining his new arm cast that he had to wear for six weeks. After the nurse lay down the rules, Jesse and I drove home. He opened the door of the driver's seat and was about to hop in until I pulled him back with unknown strength.

"Don't think that I'm letting you drive, Mr. Broken Arm," I folded my arms in disagreement.

"I still have a good arm," Jesse defended.

"Get in the shotgun," I instructed.

"Fine."

He tossed me the keys and I hopped behind the wheel. I felt my stomach growl and I checked the clock; 10:34am.

"Are you hungry?" Jesse giggled. I wonder if he heard my stomach roar.

"A bit," I sugarcoated. "Are you?"

"Yeah. We should go out to breakfast. What are we close to?"

"IHOP, Bob Evans, Tommy's… to name a few."

"Ooh, I love Bob Evans. You up for it?"

"I'm down."

I took a U-Turn into the parking lot of Pier 1 and we crossed the street to the breakfast restaurant. After we were seated, Jesse and I ordered our drinks. I noticed the waitress took interest in Jesse, and completely ignored the fact that I was sitting right across from him in the booth.

"What happened to your arm?" asked the waitress, whose name turned out to be Mary. She had her back facing me, total concentration on Jesse.

"Car accident," Jesse noted.

"Sorry to hear that. I once broke my arm-"

"Can we order?" I interrupted. She glanced at me with disapproval. I held up my left hand, purposely showing off the ring on my finger. Mary cleared her throat, but still didn't face me.

"What can I get you?" she asked Jesse.

"Beca?" he looked over at me.

"Half decaf, half regular coffee, with three creamers."

"Two please," Jesse added onto my order.

"It'll be out in a moment," she walked away, clearly trying to strut absolutely nothing.

"Well she's annoying," I pouted.

"How so?"

Was he blind? "She was flirting. She even unbuttoned one of her buttons on her uniform."

"She did?"

"How could you not notice?"

"Because I was looking at you the entire time," Jesse walked his left fingers, the ones that belonged to the unbroken arm, and held my hand in admiration. His cheesy remarks and grins never failed to make me melt inside.
