(Chapter Forty-Eight)
"This one doesn't fit me right." I complained while Bianca sat with me in the fitting room of a dress store. "Its too night around the boobs." I turned this way and that before a full length mirror. "And most importantly, I can't breath."
She gave me a shrug. "Well, lets get you out of that and see if we can find you anything else that you may prefer." She said absently while fishing through several of the formal dresses we had brought in with us. "What about this one?" She asked, holding up a light blue, floor length dress that had a low scoop in the back. It was flowey and light to the mind's eye. Strangely, it reminded me of Galadriel's dresses as I stood there, staring at it. Bianca shifted so it would be angled correctly underneath the light. "Hey, at least try it on so we can see how you fit into the dresses."
"What about yourself?" I asked while struggling to get out of the one I was currently in. Bianca came up from behind and swiftly undid the zipper. I let out a huge sigh of relief. "Thank God. I thought I'd never get out of that dress without fainting."
"You're such a drama queen." Bianca said jokingly. She handed the dress she was still holding in her arms. "Try this on while I go back out front for some accessories that may go well with this."
"How much longer will we be dress shopping?" I complained. "I don't really care how I look anyway."
She gave me a hard look for a split-second before smiling widely at me. "Looks helps others to think better of people whom they don't believe isn't up to par with them." I was left with my mouth hanging. I abruptly snapped it shut. It didn't matter. Nothing matter anymore since Haldir left. I bit back the hot tears as I force myself to slip into the dress.
"Are you in it yet?" Bi called from the other side of the door.
"I'm just getting my fat butt past the middle." I called back. The dress wasn't really tight at all. In fact, the the dress fit every curve of my body. I stared at my figure in the mirror. "Not bad." I said to myself, turning this way and that. Bi stuck her head in and beamed brightly.
"Totally looks awesome! You are going to have all the guys fall on the floor once they take a look at you."
I rolled my eyes. "Yeah, I can't wait." I replied sarcastically. "Just what I need."
"What?" Giving me innocent eyes. "Since you are single again, I'm sure a little flirting won't hurt."
I felt my cheeks flame red. This was the first time she had mentioned anything in relation to Haldir's lack of presence in my home.
"I don't want to talk about this.' I snapped at her. I turned my attention to adjusting the dress better. Bianca stared at me with thin lips. "What? Its no one's business to know what goes on in my personal life. Everyone knows that I'm damaged goods anyhow." I mock her mother's words in a pain-laced voice. "I rather enjoy being alone."
"Acadia, can I ask you something very personal?" Bianca said softly. She ran her hand over the dress I took off earlier. "Do you love Conner?"
"What business is it to you?" I replied while biting back the tears once more. "He left me, not the other way around."
"For what reason?"
"How am I supposed to know? Just because he tried to break up with me on graduation day?"
"Really?"
"I don't want to talk about this anymore, Bi." I turned to face her. "Can we just drop the subject and finish the shopping?I have things to do back home."
"Alright, I won't ask anything more. I was just curious." She relented finally. "So hows work?" She changed subject lightly. "Mine has been completely crazy as of late."
Letting out a deep sigh, I figured it wouldn't' be much longer before every in town would hear of the happenings between me and Haldir. I focused on the rest of the shopping, needing to get as much done as possible. My phone rang in my purse. Bianca handed me the phone. "I don't recognize the number." She told me as I flipped it.
"Hello?"
"Hi, is this Arcadia?" A woman's voice replied on the other end.
"Um, yes.' I said slowly. "This is she."
"I know that this might be short notice, Acadia." The woman continued with a small laugh. "But my name is Kathrine. I'm Liam's twin sister and he told me that you may be in need of some company to the masquerade birthday ball."
"Okay." Liam has a twin sister?! how many more creatures from Middle Earth are going to keep showing up here?
"Anyway, why don't you and I meet up somewhere tomorrow afternoon over lunch? That way, you can get to know me a little instead of waiting for Saturday where there would be too many awkward moments."
"Where do you want to meet up at?" I said while grabbing a pen and paper from my purse.
"I'll just have Liam give you a call tonight about that. I have to go know before he starts yelling at me for leaving the Lembas in the oven too long. Bye." She hung up the phone.
"Whats wrong?" Bi asked me upon seeing the shocked expression that was still stamped on my face.
"Its nothing." I said quickly with a fake smile. "I just have to meet up with someone in the afternoon tomorrow over lunch and talk about business. So what were we doing?"
"Acadia, I just have one thing to say to you."
"What?"
Bianca grimaced while rubbing the back of her neck. "You are one hell of a tough cookie when it comes to having normal conversations."
