Of Eyes and Fangs
Chapter forty five
If that stupid fox didn't get that moronic smile off of his face within the next fraction of a second, the old tanuki back at the village was going to be left without an employer.
Hiei was not patient, in fact he was the exact opposite, but he wasn't going to get the answers he wanted from Shippo's charred corpse. The incinerating would have to be postponed. A shame, since the fox had been a nuisance from the moment he'd returned to the shack Hiei might have called a home, if the sentimentality behind the word didn't make him gag.
He didn't beat around the bush. "Why are you here?" Shippo locked eyes with him and stood lazily from his spot on the floor, his relaxed posture offset by his serious expression.
"To see if the rumors were true." He ran a clawed hand through his bound hair and gestured to the opening that served as the dwelling's front (and only) entrance, "Let's talk outside, shall we?" Not waiting for a response, the fox turned and left. A soft noise above him let Hiei know he'd settled on the roof and, hungry for answers, he followed suit.
There was a tranquil quality to the evening sky, something he never would've attributed to the demon realm, of all places. Hiei looked at the deep purple clouds up ahead minutely before setting his crimson eyes on the kitsune. He was dawdling on purpose, keeping his sight trained on the rising moon.
Just as Hiei was about to demand that he finished explaining his motives, Shippo hummed. "The wolves said there was a human child close enough to the Eastern Mountains that their prince came upon them while on patrol a few months ago." His green eyes slid over to him, "and along with the child was a demon so frightening his tiny size barely made a difference… or so they said." His sly look was met with a bland stare.
Hiei crossed his arms. "And this is relevant because?" It was obvious the wolves had been speaking of him, what was the point in mentioning it? He knew the fox had a longstanding relationship with the wolf tribe (and while it was strange, it suited him just fine because Shippo was nothing if not strange himself), it wasn't surprising that they'd relayed the information to him.
The devious gleam in Shippo's eyes was wiped clean, replaced with a severity uncharacteristic of him. "Because I didn't hear it from the wolves."

I've officially started planning the sequel to this lil' drabble series. It's gonna get intense.
