Chapter 49: Meeting the enemy
They went back to Philly the day after. Ezra had to go back to his work, and Aria had to go back to her new life of being a mother and a wife. She also kept writing her book when she could find some time and also, she was waiting for news from U-Penn. Ezra told her that he had a good feeling about this and she felt hopeful as well. He had helped her with her resume. She had to admit that he was good at that and he truly loved his teaching job. Looking at him, and the passion he had for his profession, made her want to go to the same way. That didn't keep him away from his writing though. He kept doing it, but his main thing now was the teaching. Well, except the times when he was at home with his family. Aria could see his dedication to her and Emma. She could see the love and happiness in his eyes, every time he looked at them. That couldn't make her more happier than she already was. She wanted to make him happy and when she could see that into his eyes, her life was whole. That was the true love and she now, she could see that she couldn't truly understand it in the past.
But not now. Now, she felt complete. She had everything she had every wished for, and she was happy... and she was only nineteen. Maybe she had done something good in her previous life to be rewarded like this. It took a lifetime to some people to have what she had now. For that, Aria was really grateful. The only shadow in her life now, was Melissa. Yes, she knew that she had to talk to her. She had to make things clear. She had to ask her why she was so persistent of ruing so many lives. She had to ask her why she wanted to ruin her own life. Why Aria was so important to her? Yes, Aria had noticed that the latest attacks of -A was mainly to her. Was it only Melissa? Or maybe was Noel's jealousy of Ezra? Why Ezra got shot in the first place? Yes, Melissa had told them that happened, because he got too close of finding who she really is, but Aria knew that was something more to that story. Maybe she had to talk to her and find out what really is.
The problem was, Aria wasn't sure of her reactions when she meets Melissa. The only good thing was, that she was going to be behind solid glass. Otherwise, Aria wasn't sure what was going to happen. She was still angry, way too angry of her. She dared to threaten something really precious in Aria's life. When that happened, her life had almost turned upside down. She could see clearly now. She could see everything better, the past and the future. Life had taught her well that night. She had to grab what she had and keep it close and safe. That was the reason she was so overprotective of Ezra at the beginning. She was so afraid of leaving him alone even for five minutes.
The doctors and the nurses at the hospital were giving her faces, but she simply ignored them. She wanted to make sure that Ezra is okay and safe with her. She truly believed that she could keep him safe. If she was there, he would be okay, because she would protect him. She was so ready to fight for him then and nothing had changed. Not even a marriage and a kid later. When she had told him she wanted to keep their daughter, because she was his daughter as well, she wasn't lying. She wanted a family. She wanted him and having a child with him was something she was planning regardless. Maybe it happened too soon in their lives. Maybe it was unexpected, but Aria was happy now. She was happy that they kept Emma. She was that precious little thing that reminded them every day, how strong they love each other. Emma was the fruit of their love and she was so beautiful in their eyes.
"Babe?" Aria heard the front door closed and his voice, coming from the hallway.
"In here," she called him from the living room. "Emma is sleeping, so I'd love it if you keep your voice down."
Soon she saw him walking into the living room and heading towards her. She smiled when he leaned to kiss her and sat on the sofa, close to her. Ezra lifted up her legs and then put them back on his lap. He leaned back with a tired sigh and Aria touched his tie, loosening it a little bit. He was tired, she could see that. It was the end of the school year, so he had a lot of paper work to do. He was like that the whole week. It was good that it was Friday now and the last day of the school year. Ezra has to work two weeks after that, to finish few things and then he had a long vacation to work over his... book.
"I can see you are deep in thought again," he said with his eyes closed. His hands were resting on her legs, gently rubbing it from time to time. Aria sighed and leaned her head on his shoulder. "Are you going to share with me?"
"I was thinking about Melissa," Aria said finally.
"What about her?" His eyes snapped open. "I told you that the deal is off!"
"I want to talk to her," Aria said carefully.
"What?" That caught him off guard. "I thought you didn't want to see her."
"I don't," Aria put her hand on his chest and then slid it up to his shoulder. She slipped her fingers underneath his shirt, wanting to feel his warm skin beneath her fingers. "But I feel like I have to."
"You think that you'll change something with that?" Ezra rubbed her leg. "That's only going to upset you."
"Upset is not even close to how I feel when I think of Melissa!" Aria tried to keep her voice calm. "I just want to know why she hate us so much."
"She told you!" Ezra muttered. "Remember? She said she loved the game."
"No!" Aria sighed and looked up at him. "I want to know why she hates me so much."
"Why do you think she hates you more, than she hates the others?" Ezra touched her cheek and she leaned on his palm. "Do you have a reason to think like that?"
"Yes," Aria mumbled. "Yes, I do."
"Because she told Noel to shoot me?" He rose up his eyebrows.
"Not only," Aria frowned. "But yes, that too."
"You're not going to be able to forget that, are you?" His thumb gently caressed her side. "Aria..."
"No!" She interrupted him. "We've been through this, okay? I can't do that! I can't just... forget what happened! I almost lost you and that changed my life completely! Because I was faced to be in a world without you, and this is something I don't want to do! This is something I can't forget that easily and I'm sure as hell, this is something I can't forgive!"
He simply leaned to her and his lips touched her forehead, "I understand," he simply said and she leaned to his touch.
"You do?"
"Yes," he mumbled with lips, still touching her forehead. "I do."
"How?"
"The night when Emma was born," Ezra said quietly. "I knew how you must felt back then."
"Oh?" She simply said.
"Yeah," he sighed. "Exactly."
"So, then you know why I want to talk to Melissa." Aria leaned her head on his shoulder again and he leaned his head on her one.
"Yeah, I do!" His answer was quiet again. "That doesn't mean I like it though, but if you feel that's something that you have to do, then I'm with you!"
"You always have!" Aria smiled, kissing his neck again.
"Truth!" Ezra chuckled.
Aria went to visit Melissa on the next day. It was rainy and unpleasant weather, and she couldn't stop the thought of how meaningful that was. It was raining that night as well. It started raining just before they could take Ezra to the hospital. It was as if the weather was crying to her. Then, Aria had taken it as something symbolic. When she had shared this with Ezra later on, he had smiled and told her to remember their first kiss in his car. It was raining again that day and it was the moment they had decided to risk it all and be together. He'd always chose the happy moment over the sad one. That was one of they many reasons she loved him.
"Aria Fitz?" The voice startled her and she looked at the woman in uniform, standing close to her. "The prisoner you requested is there. Would you like to go into the room?"
"Yes," Aria nodded and cleared her throat. "Yes, I want to."
"Follow me," the woman said and Aria followed her.
When they entered in the small room, Melissa was already there. The whole anger Aria felt towards that woman, rushed back in her head and she clenched her fists. She took the chair opposite Melissa and stared at the glass that separated them. Melissa smiled. It was the same wry smile that haunted her dreams.
"So, we meet again!" Melissa finally spoke. "Mrs. Fitz, I'm so happy to see you!"
