Chrom thought that this day, like the past few days, would be great. Grima was defeated and put to sleep for another thousand years, and they were returning home to Ylisstol, where his baby girl waited. Everything was just great.
And then his wife had woken, took one look at her surroundings, shouted, and fell off the cot. Chrom sat up, rubbing his eyes. "Silver?"
The sound of scuffling met his ears as he saw his wife move backward away from him.
"Who the hell are you?" she demanded.
"What? Are you joking with me?"
Silver's eyes were wide with fear and uncertainty. "I swear, I don't know who you are, where I am, or…" She gasped, gripping her head like it hurt. Of course, that was the moment Frederick chose to intervene from outside the tent, causing Silver to start violently.
"Milord? Milady? I heard a shout. Is everything alright?"
Chrom sighed. "Yes, Frederick. Everything's fine."
"Very well." The knight's footsteps faded away. Chrom returned his gaze to Silver. He stood, slowly walking over to her. She whimpered slightly, like a wounded and cornered dog.
"Hey," Chrom said softly, kneeling to her level. "I'm not going to hurt you. I'm you husband, remember?"
"Husband? I've never even met you before." She scowled at him, so untrusting.
"What's the last thing you remember?"
"Um…walking through a field and being attacked by someone who looked exactly like me."
"Okay. Before that?"
Tears started to fill her eyes. "I was leaving the town my mother and I had stayed in for the past year. She got really sick, maybe from the stress, and passed away suddenly. We moved about so much…she was…she was all I had in this world."
"Why did you move around so much?" This question was more for his curiosity than anything else.
"My father. He was chasing us, said I had some destiny. We lost him about five years ago, but we never stayed in one place." She glared. "You're working for him, aren't you?"
"No."
Silver leapt to her feet. "Don't lie."
"Silver, your father's dead!"
"Liar!" She dashed from the tent, Chrom hot on her heels. He managed to grab her, holding her back as she fought. Other Shepherds watched curiously.
"Father? Mother?" Lucina approached cautiously.
"Go get your aunt, Lucina," Chrom said, before returning his attention to his wife as his daughter ran off. "Silver, hush. I'm a friend. Everyone in camp is a friend. We won't ever hurt you."
"Then how do you know my name?"
"Because it's been more than two years since you encountered that person who looked like you. Something had happened to your memory when we met, and you forgot your past. You've been traveling with me since."
"And what do I call you?"
"Chrom."
Silver glanced around warily, seeming to shrink under all the stares. "I've forgotten over two years?"
"Yes. Let's go back to the tent, okay, Silver?"
She nodded and the two returned. Silver sat nervously on a camp chair while Chrom sighed. They waited only a few more moments until Lissa called out, asking if she could come in. Chrom told her she could, and the blond healer entered. Morgan and Lucina stood behind her in the tent's entrance, both looking rather concerned.
"What's wrong?" Lissa asked.
"Silver's amnesia is gone, but she's forgotten everything since we found her."
Lissa, who looked so hopeful at the first part, deflated. "Anything weird happen?"
"Nothing unusual. We went to sleep as normal last night. But this morning…"
Silver drew her knees up to her chest, shivering slightly. "I'm sorry," she whispered.
"It's not your fault," Lissa said cheerily. "You just get to learn anew!"
Silver nodded, and Lissa, with no way to help, left. Morgan and Lucina stayed. "She's really forgotten us?" Morgan asked. Silver looked at him warily.
"I'm afraid so. Silver, these are our children from the future. Our daughter, Lucina, and son, Morgan."
Silver nodded. "The future?"
"It's complicated," Lucina replied. "I can tell you about it later, if you want."
"Later sounds good," Chrom said. "Just, give her a moment to get used to this."
The siblings nodded and left. For a moment, Silver sniffled. "I-I'm sorry, Chrom. I know you said we're married but…I just don't…"
"Silver, look at me." The tactician raised her head, her brown eyes meeting his blue ones. "You take all the time you need. I'll be waiting for you." He hugged her, letting her know in some way that he cared for her. She hesitated, but returned the hug.
"And yet this feels so right," she whispered with tear-filled eyes
"Good."
Silver never regained her full memory, but she eventually came to know her fellow Shepherds like she had known them before. Many things were said about her, all differing on the facts, but everyone agreed on one thing – she loved her husband, Chrom, above all else.
