A/N: I'm not going to lie there was a portion of this chapter that brought me to tears and I wrote it. Have your kleenex ready and I hope everyone enjoys this little turn of events.
Alex rolled her neck from left to right in an attempt to release some of the tension she felt building. Just as Olivia was released from the hospital McCoy had called her and begged her to return for the unit's current case. They were handling a case of a doctor accused of molesting his patients. Everything was going according to plan until he was discovered dead in his brownstone and the detectives were accused of having prior knowledge of previous acts of molestation by this doctor. Then just when it didn't seem like things could get any worse, Kim Greylek, the attorney assigned to the unit during her absence, returned to appeals without notice. This left her scrambling to pick up the pieces of the case, save the detectives reputation and prove them innocent, and deal with a new detective in Casey place.
"How are my two favorite people?" Alex asked opening the apartment door stopping in her tracks when she saw a man sitting on their couch holding Jon.
"Hey honey." Olivia said looking up at her wife with a smile on her face "This is Kevin Brackett, he's an attorney."
Alex dropped her briefcase on the floor and felt the room start to sway. She could only stare at Olivia in shock as she felt all the air leave her body as if she was suckered punched in the gut.
"Ma'am, are you ok?" Kevin asked standing when he noticed Alex start to lose her balance.
Alex glared at him as he held her son and then at Olivia "You promised."
"Oh god" Olivia mumbled realizing what it appeared to be she pushed the controller forward on her wheelchair and maneuvered through the living room to Alex "No baby. I swore to you that day in the hospital I wouldn't try to leave you anymore. I meant that."
Alex dropped to her knees in front of Olivia and took her hands in hers "baby."
Olivia leaned forward the best she could and placed a gentle kiss on Alex's lips. "The pain I saw in your face that day was more than I ever want to bear. I may not be the woman you deserve or the mother he needs now, but I cannot be the cause of the pain I saw that day. I love you too much to do that to you."
"I love you" Alex whispered as she leaned forward and kissed Olivia before standing and facing Kevin "Please hand me my son."
Kevin did as she asked with a smile on his face "You have a very handsome son ma'am."
"Thank you." Alex replied as she smiled at Jon before looking back at Kevin "If my wife didn't hire you, please tell me how I can help you and how you made it to my apartment."
"I allowed him entry when John called up and said he was here. I thought you knew he was coming but since you got called away so quickly you forgot to tell me. I tried calling you but you didn't answer your phone so we've been here talking waiting for you to get home."
Alex turned her attention from Olivia and back to Kevin "Mr. Brackett how did you know where I lived?"
"It was all in the information that Ms. Novak left with me."
"Casey?"
"Yes, I was hired by Ms. Casey Novak." Kevin stated as he took a seat once again when Alex motioned for him to do so.
"Oh" Alex mumbled as she arranged Jon in Olivia's arms so she could hold him. "If you give me a moment we can step into my office and discuss whatever it is you need to discuss."
"Actually it involves both of you." Kevin stated as he opened his briefcase and pulled out a manila envelope and handed it to Alex.
Alex took the envelope from Kevin and sat down next to Olivia as she opened it. She quickly scanned the paperwork and then looked up to Kevin "This can't be correct."
"It's Ms. Cabot"
"Would someone mind filling me in?" Olivia stated looking between the two lawyers who seemed to be having a silent conversation between the two of them.
"Casey left her estate to us." Alex said turning to face Olivia reaching out to caress Jon's face "Specifically to Jonathan. Her life insurance has been placed in a trust fund for him that he can partially access at the age of eighteen for college only. He can receive full control of it upon graduation of at least a bachelor's degree. If he does not go to college then he cannot receive any of it until he turns twenty-six."
"I don't understand why did she do that?" Olivia asked.
"Ms. Novak lost her parents when she was in her early twenties and had no other family. She explained to me that she felt closer to the two of you than anyone else in her past and she saw you two as family. There's a letter in there that will explain it better."
Alex searched through the papers until she found the hand written letter in familiar handwriting. Her hands shook as began to read the letter as the tears started to fall.
Alex,
If Kevin is sitting across from you then that means I am dead. I can only hope and pray that I went out in a blaze of glory in one hell of a gunfight, like I always said I wanted. I know you are confused about why I have left everything to you, specifically Jonathan. As you know my family passed when I was in college and you guys have become the closest I have to family. When Olivia told me she was pregnant I was beyond happy for you both and then you asked for me to be his godmother. That was the happiest day of my life. To know that you trusted me enough to care for your son if something should happen to you both, you will never know what that meant to me. The first time I felt him kick I fell in love with him. I decided then I wanted to leave everything I had to him. I found an attorney and set this plan in motion. I pray that I will be visiting Mr. Brackett on our annual scheduled visit and replacing this letter with another one. If not my last wish will be that you make sure Jonathan knew his Aunt Casey loved him with all her heart. I love you dearly and I am so happy you have finally found the family you have always wanted.
"She gave her life so he could live." Alex cried "And now she is giving everything she has to him."
"She really loved that little boy." Kevin stated "You should have heard her talk about what all she wanted to do for him. I truly don't think I have ever met someone who loved a child that was not theirs the way she loved him."
Alex reached out and placed her hand on Olivia's arm for comfort.
"So about three months ago I went with her down to Gibraltar Private Bank & Trust on Park Avenue and established a trust account for your son."
"How was that possibly, she was alive and they require you to have at least five hundred thousand to open a trust fund. I should know I have several accounts there."
"Surprise, Ms. Novak actually was quiet wealthy she just chose to live off of her salary as a New York detective."
"What" Olivia said shocked
"She was the sole beneficiary of her parent's life insurance which totaled close to a million dollars after she paid their debts, funeral, and bought her apartment. The rest she placed in a high interest savings where it sat for over six years. When we opened the trust fund for your son she placed a million dollars in it and the rest she placed in a separate fund for the Polaris Project that helps fight human trafficking. That was apparently a subject matter she felt strongly about. She has requested that her life insurance policy, which was doubled since they declared her killed in the line of duty, from NYPD be placed in your son's trust fund and her private policy be placed in the other fund for the Polaris Project. She's asked that everything in her apartment be given to you to help those in need and the money we will make from selling her apartment will go to the officer survivor fund for NYPD."
Kevin stopped talking and looked at both of the women in front of him. He could tell that they were truly in shock and was only absorbing about twenty percent of the information that he was telling them. Which is probably more than most of his clients would have taken in if they were blindsided like this.
"I understand that you will need time to process this information" Kevin said as he closed his briefcase and stood realizing that it was useless to continue "If you will look in that packet there are some papers that you will need to sign and we will need to go to the bank at a later date to allow you both access to the trust fund. My business card is in there as well and you can call me when you are ready to do so."
"Thank you." Alex said as she stood and walked Kevin to the door. "I will be in contact in a few days so we can take care of the needed paperwork."
Kevin simply nodded in agreement as he walked out of their apartment.
The Polaris Project is an actual organization that was formed to assist in combating Human trafficking and assisting the victims of it.
