Y-ello! This is a request that came from Super Duper Blue who asked for a one shot where Sonic was colour blind and therefor has never seen the colour blue and that he's also kept this information from his friends. Now Super Duper Blue has written their own iterating of this on their own account and I have read the first chapter and seen that what they've written and what I've written is very different. I hope you don't mind my version Super Duper Blue!
I'm nearly finished with Fratricide part 3 so it should be up either later today or tomorrow. I'm having lots of fun with this request and from reading your reviews so are all of you. Anyways, hope you all enjoy this little chapter!
"Your such a lovely shade of blue."
"You shine like a sapphire!"
"Ironic you hate water but are the colour of the ocean."
Those phrases had followed Sonic throughout his life. In his early years is was jeering words from bullies for according to his mother his colouring wasn't all that common. Yes, Mobians could be blue but the shade of blue he'd been born as, cobalt blue wasn't common. So in his early years, it had been nasty remarks about his colouring that followed him about. As he grew, however, and quickly became a world renowned hero they changed to compliments. They would say he looked handsome, beautiful, mystifying and enchanting. They would compare him too precious gemstones and the waves of the ocean. Sonic would always smile and nod, thanking them for their kind words before moving on to the next adventure.
Sonic wondered how they would react if he told them that in all his life he'd never seen the colour blue. His mother had been the only one to know he was colour blind. It wasn't that he was ashamed of it. In the end, Sonic just saw it was trivial information. It wasn't important and didn't effect his life in any way so why bother mentioning it. It had never bothered him because it was just the way he saw the world, had always seen the world.
So, in the end, none of his friends knew of his colour blindness due to this way of think as well as Sonic forgetting that he was colour blind most of the time. When it was finally revealed Sonic would laugh about the memory for years to come because it was just so funny.
Everyone was sitting in the blue hero's living room, eyes locked on the screen that was playing a new action movie they had rented. At the same time, Tails was tinkering with a new invention, screwing bolts into it and connection wires and such. It was the wires that caused the big reveal.
"Sonic, can you pass me the speel of blue wire please?" Tails asked, eyes not leaving his invention. Said hedgehog blinked, mind slowly pulling away from the movie as he processed what his little brother had asked him. He turned bright green eyes to where all the speels of wire sat. there were four sitting on the coffee table. He knew one was yellow, one was red, another and green and one was blue. Sonic knew this but all he could see were different shades of greys and browns and greens. He squinted, looking down at his own arms to try and compare the colours but his shade of blue was too different from the wire to perfectly match.
He scowled, suddenly annoyed at his colour blindness. It rarely if ever hindered him in his day to day life but when it did it was always frustrating. He contemplated taking a wild guess but if he ended up picking the wrong colour then he'd just end up embarrassing himself even more than he would from asking for help.
"Sorry bud, I can't tell which ones blue." He said with a shrug of his shoulders. He watched in amusement as Tails jumped in surprise, turning surprised eyes on him while those within hearing range also turned to stare.
"What do you mean you can't tell. It's not that dark in here." Knuckles pointed out. Sonic rolled his eyes, a snort of amusement escaping him as he did so.
"Course it's not that dark. I just can't see the colour blue." He shot back with a teasing smirk that widened when everyone's mouths dropped open in shock.
"Your colour blind!" Tails exclaimed, Sonic nodding in agreement.
"Yep, have been all my life so I've never seen the colour blue before." He admitted freely. He couldn't help but snicker at their shocked faces, looking like he'd just announced he was going to jump off a bridge. "It's not that shocking is it? So I can't see certain colours, who cares?"
"But…but your blue!" Amy waved her arms about to emphisis what she was saying and Sonic laughed joyessly.
"So I've been told." He grinned.
"So your telling us you've never seen what colour you are?" Knuckles asked.
"I mean, if we wanna get technical I've seen what colour I am to my own eyes, just not the colour everyone else is seeing." He shrugged again, still smiling. "To me, I'm a dark shade of grey."
"Grey! Now that is a travesty." Rouge bemoaned with a smile of her own. "To think that anyone would compare such a beautiful shade of blue to such a boring colour as grey!"
Sonic laughed along with her, the others slowly joining in with them. After a few more words exchanged they all quickly went back to the movie. After all, Sonic was right, being colour blind wasn't that big of a deal.
But when a week later Sonic found a pair of glasses sitting on his bed, a note from his friends saying that they hoped he enjoyed seeing blue for the first time, he couldn't fight back the fond smile. He'd heard of the glasses that could help colour blind people see normally but had never felt the need to get a pair. He'd never been fussed about his lacking of sight. But the fact his friends had gone out of their way to give him such an opportunity warmed his heart.
Quick as a flash he slipped the glasses on and gave a bright excitable laugh as his eyes were assaulted with bright vibrant colours! Red, greens, yellows, purples all jumped out at him in startling clarity. But it was when he looked at his reflection in the mirror that Sonic finally understood why so many people stared and commented on his fur colouring. He'd never seen or imagined a colour like it in all his life. It was so bright that is almost seemed to glow. Sonic smiled, his mind committing the colour to memory as he slipped the glasses off and stored them away safely in his desk drawer.
"If the ocean is that colour then maybe it isn't so bad after all." He mused offhandedly before leaving the house to go on his morning run.
Only a short one this time but I kind of liked how sweet and simple it was. I've been writing so many angsty one shots lately that I think this little happy one was a nice change of pace. Doesn't mean I'm gonna stop writing angsty one shots though cause they are just so much fun to write xD.
As always, you all have a wonderful day, week, month and year and I'll see you all next time.
