A/N Slightly mouthy Bella comes out ;)
Chapter 49
Before I could stop her, Bella was out of the car and in front of the wolves. Not even a second passed before I stood next to her. The mutts crouched lower to the ground like they were about to attack but Bella and I stood still. We didn't do anything for them to jump out at us like that, if they wanted to break the treaty then I'd be more than happy to destroy every single one of them.
"Are we supposed to fucking guess why you jumped out at us like that? I don't fucking speak dog so one of you is gonna have to change into human form." My beautiful girl started picking her nails and gave off the look of being bored. A few of the dogs snarled but soon stopped when Jacob barked out an order.
It was Jacob and a dog named Sam that ran into the forest and shifted back into their human form. The rest of the pups kept a watchful eye on Bella and I. I wanted to move Bella behind me but she simply wrapped her arm around my waist and snuggled into me whilst we waited for the other two to re-emerged and join their pack.
Their thoughts were all over the place and I noticed that Bella was studying them too. I wondered whether she was listening to their thoughts too, I just couldn't tell.
They were assessing our position and the way we were wrapped around each other. Paul was looking at how much Bella had grown, the young woman she became. He took in her body and I was losing it inside.
'Shhhh baby, ignore him. He's never going to see what's underneath my clothes. Only you Edward, only you baby.' Bella's thoughts calmed me but only a little. It was like the dog was obsessed with her. He has given us trouble when she was younger and it just looked like his obsession has grown.
"Why are you here?" I asked as soon as Jacob and Sam re-joined their pack.
"We just wanted to check how she's developing."
"She? I have a fucking name!" I felt anger roll down her body and there was no way in knowing what she might do.
"And jumping out at us in the middle of a freakin' road was a good way to do that? What if there were other drivers on the road? I know you mutts are all about protecting the people but fuck, that's a dumb way of going about it." Bella snorted and I saw in her head she wanted to high five me.
"This is free territory, we were simply curious. Of course we care about our people's health, that's why we came out when it was an empty road." That still didn't answer my question, and how the hell did they know when we will drive past here?
"How did you know we will be driving past here?" Bella beat me to the question.
They all tried to hide the fact they were keeping tabs on us but failed miserably. Their loud thoughts were clear as day.
"Lucky guess." Jacob replied and then did the same once over as Paul, taking in Bella's body and our embrace.
Bella began coughing, for a human it looked convincing and it even convinced some of the younger wolves too.
"Bella you ok?" I asked in mock concern.
"Yeah, just allergic to bullshit that's all baby." They all noticed her call me baby and shock was written all over their faces and thoughts.
"What do you want? And don't bullshit this time, we have places to be and you're wasting our time. Look at me like that one more time and I won't be held responsible for my actions." Bella's voice was deadly and they all took it as a threat.
In an instant I knew, and I'm sure Bella did too, that they are here because they want to see how dangerous she has grown to be, if at all.
Not all of them understood her last comment because most of them saw her as a 'leech' whilst a few others saw the human in her and how attractive she looks.
All of a sudden Bella was crouching, whilst I was too occupied with listening to them lust over my mate, I missed the fact that Jacob started thinking about tearing Charlie into pieces. His facial expression was blank as he took in Bella's stance and tried to figure out what made her do that.
"Don't think for a fucking second that I don't know the fact that it was you who killed Charlie."
There was a collective wonder about who she was talking about and only a handful of them knew who she was referring to.
"You remember?" Sam spoke up for the first time.
"No I don't, I wasn't there in case you forgot. He left me a letter." She was still crouching and I let her do what she wanted.
"We simply want to know if there have been any changes since you've gotten older. We know that you leeches have powers of some sort. We want to know if you have any that should cause concern." Jacob spoke up as once again he was checking Bella out. He wanted to riddle her up and see how she would react.
Bella was obviously listening to his thoughts too, she wasn't going to give him the pleasure of finding out though. Bella straightened out and then stood beside me once again, I draped my arm across her shoulders and gave Jacob a warning look. The idiot was walking on thin ice with both Bella and I.
"You have nothing to lose sleep over dog. I have perfect control, over everything. If that's everything you needed to know we'll be on our way now." Bella turned and walked back over to the car and got inside, this time sitting behind the wheel. She started the car and then began typing something into her phone.
The rest of us stood where we were, their eyes were on Bella whilst mine were on them. I searched their minds for anything that might tell me what their next step would be but the majority of them wanted to leave because they too saw it as time wasting. Apparently Jacob and Paul convinced them that there would be a confrontation that would need to be taken care of and that's why there was so many of them here.
Idiots.
I snickered and turned away from them and took the passenger's seat, before the door was closed we were speeding off and away from them. Bella was still angry and she looked absolutely stunning behind the wheel. It was like this car was simply built for her.
Before I got the chance to say anything to her, my phone rang.
"Alice?"
"Edward are you two ok? Bella wouldn't tell me what happened! I couldn't see anything and I panicked, neither one of you answered your phones! What happened?" she shouted down the phone and I was sure Bella could hear it too. She was still looking straight ahead at the road but I could still feel her anger.
"We're fine Alice, we're nearly home. We'll talk then." I didn't give her a chance to reply before I hung up.
"You ok beautiful?"
"Just peachy baby."
