I'm sorry for the delay in posting this, I've had deadlines that have been really stressing me out for the last few weeks. I've got some more in the next few weeks but hopefully I'll get another chapter up soonish.
Hope you like it.
Over the next few weeks Nana kept visiting a few times a week to keep Sam company. Sam tried to insist that the older woman didn't have to go out of her way to come and sit with a bored pregnant woman, but Nana had just laughed her off and told her that it was no bother at all.
Sam really enjoyed the visits. Nana had a lot of stories to tell and Sam loved hearing them. She was also happy to sit and talk to Sam about her life, not concentrating on what they were doing now, although she was very interested in how the relationship between Sam and her grandson had begun and blossomed, but about her childhood and living in DC.
Their chats gave Sam some much needed relief from her own thoughts. As her due date got closer she started to over think things. She worried about whether she was making the right choice, whether this was fair on Jack after what had happened with Charlie, wondered if Jack was going to be able to cope, worrying about her babies safety when she knew just how much evil there was in the universe.
But Nana's calm and constant presence kept her from going down that particular rabbit hole. Cassie also continued to come round and she and Nana became close as a result. Nana was interested in the young girl who was so close to Sam, and she knew that Jack loved the child dearly too, and Cassie also loved the older woman. She and Jacob were close, he understood something of what Cassie had gone through as he too was now a stranger from another planet surrounded by people, but he was away a lot, and Cassie appreciated the older woman's input in her life, it gave her a perspective that she didn't necessarily already have.
Nana too enjoyed the company of the young woman, she could see how much she meant to both Sam and Jack, and how much she helped Sam deal with the loneliness she tried to keep hidden.
It became common for Jack to come home from a day at the mountain and find Nana and Sam, and Cassie provided her school schedule allowed for it, sitting in the house together chatting. The topic of conversation could be anything from Cassie's studies to Nana's childhood, or in some cases Jack's childhood. Those were Jack's least favourite conversations, they also ended up in laughter and Sam had taken to teasing him about some events after everyone had gone home. Then again, it served him right; he had done the same to her on many occasions with stories from both Mark and Jacob.
Even with the stories that she was telling Sam, Jack was glad that Nana was spending so much time with Sam. He knew she appreciated the company, and Jack knew that Nana was liking the company as well. His family visited her in the home all the time but he knew that sometimes Nana wished she could see them more often, she may have looked strong and healthy but she had told Jack in strictest confidence that she really was beginning to feel her age, which was one of the reasons she'd moved into the home in the first place.
Jack had kept her secret but he was glad that she and Sam were getting on so well and spending so much time together. He knew that his Nana came round most days now, sometimes Sam would pick her up and other times she'd take either the bus or a taxi to get to them. On the days that Nana was around Sam also didn't feel the need to call in to let Jack and the others know that she was ok, and Jack agreed with her.
The calls were to make sure that if Sam was to suddenly start having problems they would know, but if Nana was there then there was someone else how could help Sam out, someone a whole lot closer than the mountain was.
Sam would say goodbye to Sam in the morning and head to work happy in the knowledge that at some point before ten his Nana would be round to sit with Sam for the day.
About two and half weeks after the lock down Jack kissed Sam goodbye and headed for work. He whistled as he drove and soon got to his office and started on the mountain of paper work that just never seemed to go down. He thought back to the conversation that he and Sam had had the night before.
"We need to get the babies room sorted," Sam had said after they'd eaten. They were sitting on the sofa together, quietly watching some TV.
Jack had nodded. "I know. I'll make sure that Daniel and Teal'c are around this weekend and we'll get it sorted. Promise."
"You better Jack O'Neill," Sam had said in a mildly threatening tone, "It's not too long now till these babies will be here and they're going to need a room to come home to."
Jack had been quick to agree. So far he, Daniel and Teal'c just hadn't had a chance to work together to get it all done. Since the lock down situation Teal'c had been going off world a lot more frequently and Daniel had gotten more and more work of his own to do. He knew that the two of them missed being in the field with himself and Sam, and that they were finding their own ways of dealing with it, both throwing themselves into their work.
This did mean however that they rarely had any downtime at the same time anymore, which had made arranging a weekend, or even a few evenings, to sort out the nursery just hadn't happened. Jack had tried to make a start on it by himself but like Sam had discussed with Cassie, some of the bits were just too awkward and heavy for one person to do on their own, and they really did need someone with Teal'c's strength just to make the job easier. So currently the nursery was full of boxes and bits of furniture rather than built furniture in the right places.
It bothered Sam but Nana and Cassie managed to keep her mind off of it.
During one of Nana's visits they were sitting on the sofa, again looking through an old photo album that showed Jack growing up, when suddenly Sam felt a pain in her stomach.
She bent double where she was sitting and groaned. Nana immediately stopped with her story, she'd been telling Sam about the time Jack and his brothers had 'borrowed' their dads truck and very nearly ended up in the pond behind the cabin, and moved across the sofa to sit beside Sam and quickly put an arm around her shoulders, the photo album falling to the floor forgotten.
"Sam?" Nana said quietly, rubbing small circles on Sam's back, "Whatever is wrong my dear?"
"There's something wrong," Sam said quietly, cradling her stomach, "There's something wrong with the babies."
She was starting to panic so Nana took charge. "Just keep breathing Sam," she said in a soft, comforting voice, "That's it, in and out, nice and slow."
Nana breathed with Sam, calming her down. "Right," Nana said, "I'm going to ring your Doctor Frasier." She reached across and pulled the phone from its cradle. "Can you dial the number for me please dear?"
Sam nodded and quickly dialled the number. "Keep breathing dear," Nana instructed as she waited for the call to connect.
"Doctor Frasier," a voice on the other side on the phone answered.
"This is Mary Driscoll," Nana said, "Jack's grandmother."
"Hello Nana," Janet said, "What can I do for you?"
"Sam's having some problems," Nana explained quickly, "We were talking and she suddenly grabbed her stomach, she's in pain."
There was a silence on the other end of the phone before Janet spoke again.
"Can you pass me over to Sam please Nana," Janet said, trying to keep her voice calm, "I need to speak to her."
Nana handed the phone to Sam, who was still holding her stomach.
"Janet," Sam immediately said as Nana handed her the phone, "There's something wrong with my babies."
"Just keep breathing," Janet instructed calmly, "What's wrong?"
"It hurts Janet," Sam cried, "There's something wrong, I don't know what but there's something wrong."
"Ok Sam," Janet continued calmly, "I'm going to get you checked out. You can't come here, SG6 has just come back and I don't think it's the best idea to have you here, so here's what we're going to do. You're going to hand the phone to Nana and then concentrate on your breathing. Concentrate on keeping it deep and even. Can you do that for me?"
"Yes," Sam said hoarsely. She handed the phone to Nana and then concentrating on her breathing, just like Janet had told her to. Her stomach was still hurting but she tried not to panic. There was something wrong but Janet was going to sort it, Janet always sorted it out, no matter what the issue was.
Nana took the phone and listened to what Janet had to say.
"Once you hang up I need you to ring an ambulance and get Sam to the hospital," Janet explained calmly, "I'll let Jack know what's going on and meet you there."
"Ok," Nana said, "What's wrong with Sam?"
"I can't be sure," Janet said, "But we need to get her to the hospital. I'll meet you there ok."
She hung up and then Nana called the ambulance. She told them what was happening, gave them the address, and then went back to sit beside Sam. Nana sat and rubbed small circles on Sam's back, keeping her calm and keeping her breathing.
When the doorbell went and Nana was there in a flash. She let the paramedics in and then stood to one side as they assessed the situation and then loaded Sam into the back of the ambulance. With a little help Nana joined her and then they started for the hospital.
