a/n: I'm back. I'm really sorry that I haven't updated much of anything in a long while but real life is happening and with family, it comes first. I've been working on this chapter for a long while and I hope that the 9200 words will make up for being a ghost.

Adam's POV

"This is taking too long." I paced, running my hands nervously through my hair. "Why aren't they coming out?"

"Adam, you need to take deep breaths. Haley needs you to be strong."

"I can't take that undercover gig, not after what just happened."

"Let them take care of her first and then you can take care of the undercover job." I looked up at him as he clapped a hand on my shoulder.

"I can't lose them to the job."

"You're NOT going to lose them." It was only a few minutes later that someone came out of the room.

"We had to give her a mild sedative because her blood pressure was quickly rising and she wouldn't settle down."

"Is that dangerous for the baby?"

"Your son and fiancé are perfectly fine now, you can go in to see her."

"Thanks." We walked back in but she was asleep. "How am I supposed to go on that undercover job when she's lying in bed like that?"

"If it wasn't important, Voight wouldn't have asked you to do this."

"I know but she'll be stressed out the whole time."

"I have some furlough set aside, I can sit with her while you can't."

"I can't ask you to do that Severide."

"It's a good thing you're not asking then." He chuckled. "And Matt will be here as much as he can. She has a lot of people on her side."

"I'm not doing anything until she wakes up."

"I'll go get you some coffee, just take it easy Adam." I nodded, just trying to keep from going insane. It didn't take all that much time until she woke up, the meds probably making her a bit groggy.

"Hey, how're you feeling?"

"Nauseaous."

"It's probably from the meds they gave you."

"When are you leaving?" She asked, the subject still on the forefront of her mind.

"I'm not going anywhere."

"Adam. I can't ask you to do that. If Voight needs you it's because he knows you're the only one who can do it."

"I don't want to put that extra stress on you and Evan."

"Adam, baby." She took my hand in hers. "We're going to be ok. And besides, I'll have Severide to keep me company." She looked at Kelly that was back with two coffee cups in his hands.

"How did you know?"

"It's not because my eyes are closed that my ears don't work." Her lips curved into a smile.

"Fair enough." I chuckled.

"Sooo, I'll ask you again, when do you have to leave?"

"Voight wants me to go in tonight."

"Then get out of here."

"Are you sure you'll be ok?" I was nervous now and my fingers played with her engagement ring.

"We're going to be fine but you have to promise me to be careful."

"Only if you promise not to go insane before I get back."

"I'll try." I looked at her lips before I dipped lower to kiss them. The monitors beeped louder again as I deepened it. I needed to keep this in my memory because I knew this was going to be a tough undercover job for her.

"I love you." I whispered as we parted.

"We love you too." She whispered back with a smile on her face.

"Take good care of them Kelly." I extended my hand and he shook it firmly.

"You come back in one piece." I nodded at him and I smiled at Haley one more time before I left.

Kelly's POV

I watched as Adam left the room before I turned back to Haley, who had tears in her eyes, eyes looking straight ahead.

"He's going to be ok Haley." I sat on the side of her bed and pulled her to me, wraping my arms around her as she finally let the tears fall.

"What if he doesn't come back?" This stung my heart but I pulled away from her and took her cheeks in my hands.

"He's going to come back and you're going to have lots and lots of babies. Hold on to that thought ok?"

"Ok." She nodded before I used my thumbs to get rid of the tears on her cheeks. "Can you do me a favour?"

"Anything."

"Please swing by my place for some clothes. I'm going to go insane if I have to wear one of these ugly gowns for one more day."

"I can do that." I laughed. "I need to swing by the firehouse too but I'll be back in a couple of hours tops."

"Thanks for doing this Kelly, you're a great friend."

"Anything for you." I kissed her forehead before I stood. "Don't do anything stupid while I'm gone."

"Cross my heart." Her fingers glided across her heart as I laughed, walking out the door and towards 51 first. I walked across the apparatus floor and towards Boden't office. He motionned for me to come in, Casey there too, the two of them on an extra shift.

"So how's our girl?" Casey took a step forward.

"There's been an incident but she's ok."

"What kind of incident?" Matt's big brother instincts were kicking in.

"Adam has to go undercover."

"He what?" Red was now starting to creep up Matt's neck. "How can he leave her like that?"

"Calm down Matt. Voight had no other choice."

"Kelly will take Adam's place while he's gone and I spoke with Voight and he tells me that it's not a life or death undercover op, just that Adam was the most qualified for it."

"And let me guess? He wouldn't tell you what that op was about right?"

"It's safer for him and Haley will be fine." Boden placed a hand on Matt's shoulder and he instantly relaxed.

"We just need to keep her mind occupied and she'll be ok."

"I know I don't need to remind you because she's your friend too but don't let her alone too much with her thoughts."

"I've got her back. I told her I'd bring some stuff back from her place, at least feel a bit more normal."

"Keep us updated." Matt echoed Boden's thoughts.

"Will do." I left as the bells rang, everybody leaving for the call. I drove to Haley and Adam's place and found it eerily quiet so I quickly Grabbed what Haley needed before I left again. I stopped at the gift shop to raid the magazine rack and headed back upstairs. "Look what I got." I lifted her bag and showed her the magazines.

"You're a life saver Severide. I need you to do one more thing for me."

"Name it."

"Help me walk to the bathroom please."

"That kind of bed rest huh!"

"Tell me about it. All I want now is to pop him out early so I can get the hell out of here." I helped her in and she changed into one of the pair of yoga pants and cfd t-shirt I brought back along with her slippers. "Finally I get to be myself again."

"Come on, back in bed. Let's see what kind of juicy gossip we can sink out teeth in." She took the right side of her bed and I laid down next to her and we spent the rest of the morning making fun of celebrities, her laugh a sign that she was in better spirits.

Adam's POV

After I left the hospital, I went straight to the 21st and up the bullpen to the waiting unit. "Sorry for having to pull you away from Haley. How is she?" Voight asked from his doorway.

"Her pressure hiked when I told her about coming in here, she had to be sedated but she practically pushed me out the door when she woke up again."

"And who's staying with her?" Erin asked from her own desk.

"Severide for the most part. So what's the case?" Now was the time to get my head in the game, knowing Haley was in good hands.

"Student overdose at Chicago U. All of them on the football team."

"And where do I fit in?" I leaned against my desk, my arms crossed against my chest.

"We've handled the first part of the investigation but we need someone on the inside, someone who can dig deeper. We need a young, assistant coach that can get close to the players."

"I thought all the girls were after Halstead these days." I recieved a chuckle from Kevin, a eyeroll from Erin and a pen at the head from Halstead.

"Because I've already interviewed them and no one is talking." He deadpanned.

"What makes you think they'll talk to me?"

"I'm pretty sure you'll think of something." Voight said confidently.

Two weeks later

I walked into the apartment and it was almost eleven that night. I dropped my bag next to the door and headed straight for the kitchen and popped a beer from the fridge. I emptied half of the bottle in one sip and noticed the blinking light of the answering machine. I frowned at the object, knowing everyone knew no one was home but I pressed on the button and listened to the voice on the machine.

Hey Adam, it's Kelly. I'm not even sure if you're actually going to get this message but Haley is worried sick about you right now. No one at 21st will say anything when they come by and it's starting to be overwhelming for her. If ever you're aloud to, at least call her to say that you're in one piece. Otherwise, she's doing good considering she's cooped up in here. Anyways, be careful, for them.

A sigh escaped my lips and I downed the rest of the bottle. I grabbed my keys from the table and slipped out the door towards Med. I knew I shouldn't but if she was being so restless, I had to at least reassure her. I walked in through the ER doors and up to the maternity ward that was basked in darkness and I made it to her room without being seen by the nurses. I leaned against the door and watched her sleep. The sheets were tucked between her legs and she was on her side, her arm drapped over her ever growing belly. It had grown a lot in the last two weeks and it was frustrating that I was missing so much already. I walked in and gently placed a hand on her belly, recieving a kick under my fingers and I smiled before placing a kiss on her forehead.

"Adam" Her voice was fill with sleep, her eyes gently fluttering open. "Is it really you?"

"Yeah." I kissed her on the lips before I took a seat next to her.

"Is it ok for you to be here?"

"Right now it's not important. I got a message from Kelly saying you were worried sick, I had to come."

"We're happy you're here." She placed her hand on mine where Evan was kicking non-stop. "He knows daddy's here."

"I missed you so much."

"I was worried because I didn't have any news." She was now propped against her arm.

"It's been a rougher week but I think we're close, it shouldn't be long anymore."

"But you're staying safe?"

"Yes." I knew I shouldn't tell her too much but I knew it would at least ease her mind. "I'm parading around as an assistant coach at Chicago U. Drug ring in the athletic department."

"I can breathe more easy now."

"I can't stay too long."

"Can't wait for you to get back. And don't flirt too much." She chuckled.

"I only have eyes for my beautiful pregnant fiancé. Hang in there." I stood and kissed her. She deepened it and pressed her forehead to mine.

"I love you."

"Love you too." I kissed her one last time and kissed her belly before I left her to get some sleep. I quietly left the hospital to get a few hours of sleep myself before reporting to 21st really early and then to the university.

On most nights, I would end up coming home around midnight with a few drinks in my system. The whole coaching staff would get their faces smashed in small dive bars and I had found out that some of them were involved in the dealings but I still hadn't been able to figure out which one was at the top and with which players were involved in the dealing of the drugs. Chicago University has an extensive Athletic department and so far, the drugs were only going around in the male portion of it.

After only a few hours of sleep, it was back to 21, a very large coffee in hand. "Morning!" I mumbled as I let myself fall on the chair.

"Another late night?"

"Thse people will have my liver. Tell me what I gave you last time was worth the headache I got the next morning."

"We're looking into the therapists past. Antonio tells me you paid someone a visit last night." I sat up straight at the mention of my late night visit to Haley.

"I had no choice sarge. Severide left me a message at home saying she was going nuts and no one from here was giving her any news. What would you have done?"

"The same thing, considering." Voight smiled a rare smile my way.

"Ok so Markus Teller had a rap sheet a mile long for drug possession and distrution with a few nights in county lock up for it. His usual amo is hooking girls on the street with drugs but this is the first attempt of anything this ambitious." Lindsey posted his photo on the board.

"And do we know which students are helping him?" Jay asked.

"Not yet, I'm still working on that one. The Athletic department is enormous and I have a lot of ground to cover but I'm getting a vibe from track. They're training next to the football team and they've been socializing far too much with the varsity football team." I leaned into my chair, the hot coffee welcome down my throat.

"Alright, I need you to get close to the therapist and do whatever you have to do to get that information." Voight said.

"On it." I stood and gave them a wave of the hand before I headed out of 21st and towards Chicago U. I walked down the now familiar stairs that led to the football locker room. With my lack of sleep and not enough cafeine, I walked right into someone at the bottom of the stairs. "Sorry." I looked down to see who it was.

"It's my fault coach, I wasn't looking." She gave me a flirty smile before she walked away. I turned and looked at her go, her face familiar.

"She's hot isn't she?" I turned around again and came face to face with Markus Teller.

"Oh yeah." I gave him a smile and looked back at where she disappeared with a frown. I had seen her roaming around both the football players and track team, flirting with them and then it clicked. Markus wasn't getting his dealings done by a player but by this red head. This used to be my favourite part about undercover gigs like this when I first made it into intelligence, having to chase a girl but now that I had Haley and Evan on the way, I'd have to play it up a bit more.

"She's the one you need to go see if you're looking to score."

"I'll keep that in mind." I turned on my heels and headed into the locker room, leaving Markus standing in his spot. After a brief meeting with the coach, I took my coffee and headed outside to the field for some fresh air. I stepped onto the football field and leaned against the side of the stands, my eyes looking to see if I'd see the red head girl from this morning hanging around. I finally spotted her high up in the bleachers, books on her lap and headphones in her ears. She didn't move except to scribble notes down in her book. It didn't take very long before the boys came down to the field in small groups and as soon as she noticed everyone coming in and some students settle in the bleachers to watch, she came down from her seat and started to mingle with the group of athlètes, her finger twerling with a lock of hair.

I tried to keep an eye on her as the football team started to run plays and she stayed around the boys for most of practice, flirting with them. Twice I saw her hand something to a player but couldn't see what it was. A few hours later, the players left the field and I was starting to pick some of the gear up to bring it back when she approached me.

"I saw you looking at me from over there." She took a step closer to me, now inches away. The hight difference was noticable and I had to look down at her a bit.

"I couldn't help it, you've been on my mind since this morning." It seemed like her lock of hair was stuck to her finger because she was twirling it again, acting all innocent.

"Are you new here? I've never seen you before the last couple of weeks."

"I just moved here about a month ago when I got the job. You've been hanging here a lot." I tugged at the string of her jacket, flirting with her too.

"What can i say, I like boys and the teams throw the best parties. You should come to the next one." She leaned up on her feet and her lips were now inches away from mine.

"I don't want to get into trouble."

"If you change your mind, you know where to find me." Her lips grazed mine lightly and she turned around, her hips swaying as she moved.

"You didn't tell me your name." If I was going to find out more about her, now was the perfect time.

"Rebecca." She turned to smile at me again before going back on her way. I picked everything up off the field and headed back into the locker room to put it away but Markus was sitting on one of the benches, his phone in his hands. He stood as he made eye contact with me.

"Rebecca said to look out for you, that you might be interested in coming to our next party."

"Might be more fun that dive bars with coaches." He chuckled, knowing about the frquent visits after late night practices and meetings.

"Definitely more fun."

"Here's what you need to know." He handed me a folded piece of paper before he left without another word. I watched him leave before I unfolded it, an adress, a day and an hour scribbled on it.

"Should be interesting." I mumbled under my breath before I headed back on campus, my body begging for food now. I tried to keep an eye open for anything that could help our case. I waited in line at a small stand in the middle of the campus grounds when a voice pulled me from my thoughts.

"Markus said you might join us at the next party." I turned to be face to face with Rebecca.

"Wouldn't you like to know." I gave her a smirk.

"Well when a handsome guy like you comes, I can't not take notice can I?"

"I guess not."

"And what kind of hostess would that make me?"

"I guess I'll have to come to find out now won't I."

"I'll see you there then." She smiled before she left the line, clearly here only for the chat. I watched her leave and was brought back to the present when the stand guy cleared his throat. I gave him my order and then went on my way. I'd have to find a way to get into contact with Voight because I had a feeling that I was being watched now.

I was more than happy when the day was over. I went back home to change and headed to Molly's. It was quite empty but I found Matt at the bar with Kelly Severide. "Hey." I took a seat next to them.

"Adam." They both nodded, knowing not to ask questions.

"How is she?" I took a pull of my beer.

"She's ok. We just got back from a visit and she missed you." Matt said.

"And she says she loves you." Kelly added.

"Please tell her it's almost over and that I love her too."

"Hang in there, you guys will be together soon." Kelly clapped a hand on my shoulder.

"Thanks." I smiled back at them. "What's the status on operation surprise?"

"All you need to do is sign here." Matt slid some papers across the bar with a pen on them.

"You're kidding me right?" I grinned.

"Nope. Sign there and the house is yours." I scrambled to find where to sign and I scribbled my signature on the papers and stood quickly to pull him into a hug.

"Thanks man, you have no idea what this means to me, to us."

"The two of you just give me a healthy nephew and it'll make us even." Matt winked at me.

"It's Evan. We named him Evan." I wouldn't keep the secret anymore, I needed Matt to know too.

"This deserves a toast then." Kelly raised his bottle and we did the same. "To Evan."

"To Evan." The three of us cheered and we drank our beer. We spoke more about the house and what the next step was before I had to go back home.

I walked into our darkened apartment and set my keys down on the front table, not even bothering to turn on any lights and sighed. These last weeks were starting to be hard on me too. Knowing that Haley was stuck in that sterile room an that I wasn't the one keeping her company was killing me. Kelly was a great friend and I was grateful that he was willing to put his life on hold while I was out there to keep her safe and entertained, I wished that I was the one who was in his chair. In a sudden wave a frustration, I slammed my fist against the kitchen table.

"Is that any way to greet a guest?" I pulled the gun that was strapped under the table and aimed it at the voice.

"Damn it sarge, you scared the shit out of me." I panted as I turned on a light in the kitchen and lowered my gun.

"Sorry Ruzek. I figured that you'd be watched after what we heard so I figured I'd come here to see what we'll do."

"We need to put an end to this next Saturday, there." I pulled the piece of paper out of my pocket and slapped it on the table. "That's when it's going to go down."

"Then let's get this set up so you can go back to your own life."

"I want nothing more than that sarge." I took a seat opposite him. "I don't want to miss anymore of it. I've missed so much already."

"I'm really sorry but I heard that you just bought a house today." He smirked.

"I did." I mirrored his smile. "Matt's been a lot of help and as soon as I get out of that undercover gig, we're going to paint the whole house and get it ready for when Evan is born."

"Soon." Voight stood with a smile. "You'll get to have all of that very soon. Hang in there." He patted my shoulder before he left me for the night. I put the gun back in its spot under the table and as soon as my body hit the bed, I fell asleep, my sober state exhausted.

Three days later, early evening.

I came back home from my day at Chicago U after a last minute Saturday pratice and had enough time to grab something to eat and shower before someone from 21st would come by to prep me up for the party. The bathroom held Haley's lingering scent through the mist and it made me miss her even more. I ran a hand through my wet hair to get the excess water out and grabbed a button down from the wardrobe before heading to the kitchen for a beer. There was a knock on the door as I took my first sip and I set it down on the kitchen table before going to answer the door, Mouse on the other side.

"You ready for the party?" He walked past me as I closed the door.

"I'm ready for all of this to be over." I took the bottle of beer from the table to drink some.

"Voight says that all you need is eyes on the exchange and they'll come in for the arrest."

"And how am I supposed to make contact?"

"All you have to do is press on send on this." He handed me a cell phone.

"That's all I have to do?"

"All you have to do and Intelligence will be all over the place."

"And what about video?"

"The phone will take pictures as you send Voight the signal and for video, all you need is this." He raised another shirt for me to wear. "It's all in the buttons, you have nothing to do it'll give us a live feed the whole time.

"Alright, thanks for the help Mouse." I removed my shirt and put on the new one. "I'll see you guys later." Mouse left, letting me gather my things before I headed out to the adress Rebecca had given me. I parked my side on the side of the street and noticed a grey SUV parked right in front of the party house. "Heads up guys, the head coach is here too." In all the late nights I had spent with the coaching staff, I hadn't been able to put the finger on who in the whole group was heading the operation but now it was clear. I turned the ignition off and headed inside where I was immediately greeted by Rebecca.

"You made it." She bounced in front of me, clearly not sober herself.

"You made a pretty good argument last time, I had to come check it out." I leaned over her with a smirk.

"Let me show you around." She pulled me by the jacket and I followed her directly into the kitchen where the beer was flowing. "This is the spot in the house for all and any refreshment you're looking for." She handed me a red cup that I gladly took.

"And what's over there?" I pointed towards the stairs. She pulled me towards and up the stairs with a giggle.

"There, is where the party is really happening." Couples and random people were making out in the halls. We stopped at a closed door and she pulled me down, planting her lips on mine. She deepened it and I felt sick to my stomach for doing this. "And if you really want this party to be worth it, here's where you come to get your fix." She pushed the door open to reveal both Markus and Head coach Randall along with two students, one sniffing a line and another popping two pills.

"Hey, glad you made it." Markus stood and extended his hand for me to shake.

"Well I heard from Rebecca that you guys threw the bet parties so I had to come."

"That's right son." Said coach Randall. "This is the reason why are teams are at the top of their games. We make them work hard and every once in a while, they can just let it all go." The student that popped the pills stood up and patted me on the shoulder, giving me a goofy grin.

"Dude, this stuff is off the HOOK." The drugs were clearly very strong because the kid was already high. I grabbed the cell Mouse had given me and taken it out, pressing on the send button.

"I forgot to ask, is it ok if a friend of mine comes to join us?"

"Well if he's as hot as you, you can bring as many as you want." She batted her eyelashes and leaned up for a kiss just as the commotion started outside the room.

"Chicago PD!" Atwater burst through the door as everyone tried to scramble away but Atwater was too massive for any of them to go anywhere and Lindsay and Halstead cuffed both the coach and Markus while Olinsky cuffed Rebecca.

"You're under arrest for distribution of drugs with the intention to harm." They all looked at me with wide eyes before they were escorted out the room and down the door, past students who had been previously dancing in the living room, music blaring. Everyone was put in the back of cruisers and taken away when I felt a pat on my shoulder.

"Great job Ruzek." I looked at Voight who was smiling. "I'll meet you at 21st for some paperwork and then you can go see your girl."

"Thanks boss." I smiled back at him and went down the front stairs of the house and climbed into my car before I sighed. "It's finally over." I said under my breath. I made my way towards the 21st in complete silence, replaying the whole evening in my head. I parked in the back like I always did and walked inside without a word to anyone and headed for the locker room. The hot water in the showers was welcome even if I had showered earlier in the night but kissing Rebecca, I felt like I had betrayed Haley and it was making me sick. I wrapped a towel around my waist once I was done and headed for my locker where I always stored an extra set of clothes for post undercover ops. I walked into the bullpen while buttoning up my shirt to find everyone there waiting for me.

"Everything ok bro?" I looked at Atwater but noticed sympathetic looks from everyone.

"I can't shake that feeling like I've betrayed her." I sighed, letting my body fall in my chair, crossing my arms over my chest.

"She'll understand." Lindsay patted my shoulder before making her way to her own desk.

"Alright so I need a report from everyone and you guys are free to go." Voight said before he went into his office and closed the door behind him. Everyone concentrated on their report and as soon as I finished mine, I went to hand it in.

"Here you go sarge." I pushed the door slightly open.

"You did great out there Adam, I mean it."

"Let's hope he doesn't kick me out when she finds out."

"The two of you will be fine." He smiled at me as I handed him my report. "Now get out of here. Someone's anxious to see you."

"Night Sarge." I knew it was late but I needed to go see her, even if it was just to tell her what happened and be kicked out. I grabbed some flowers from the gift shop after some begging with the lady who was closing it when I arrived and I went directly up to the maternity floor to find Haley still awake, reading a book. "Hi darling."

"Adam." Her eyes lit up as she saw me.

"It's over." I smiled at her before I leaned down and kissed her. "These are for you."

"They're beautiful Adam but I have a feeling there's a reason behind them."

"To say I'm sorry, for everything."

"What happened tonight Adam?" I sat down next to her bed and told her everything about the job. When I was done, I couldn't help but look at the ground, embarrassed. "We're ok Adam." I looked up at her and searched her eyes for any trace of anger but I couldn't find any.

"Baby?"

"We're ok Adam." She smiled at me. "I know that what happens in undercover assignments is only you playing a role but you're here now and Evan and I are glad to have you back in one piece."

"I so don't deserve you." I took a seat on her bed and kissed her. She moved over once we parted and patted the spot next to her.

"Spend the night, please."

"I'm not going anywhere." I smiled at her before taking the spot on the bed and pulling her close to me.

"We're finally a family." She sighed, hiding her face in the crook of my neck.

"I can't wait to meet him." We spent a quiet evening lying in her bed, envoying being back together. In the following weeks, I spent my time between the hopital and the new house, helping Matt put everything together so it would be ready on time. Sometimes I even had a feeling Haley was onto me but she never said a word about it to me.

Fourteen weeks later, Haley's POV

I woke up this morning with cramping in my back. It was often an annoying side of being stuck in this bed but this morning was more annoying and painful than usual. Seeing no one around and not wanting to bother anyone, I swung my legs to the side of the bed and pressed a hand to my loswer belly, Evan giving a swift kick against my bladder.

"Come on buddy, you need to give momma a break with the kicking." I breathed out before he stilled a few seconds later. "Thanks bud." I pushed myself up and steadied myself with a hand against the bed. The bleeding had slowed down considerably in the last couple of days and right now I just needed to stretch my legs a bit. I dragged my IV pole and I made a few steps around the corner of my room when I felt arms on my waist.

"What are you doing out of bed darling?"

"I can't stand those four walls anymore Adam."

"I know but it's almost over."

"How come you smell like paint?" I scrunched my nose at the strong smell.

"I've been helping Matt with a job."

"How come it's the first time that I've heard about this?"

"Because it's our first day." Matt came into view, a smile on his face.

"I'm not sure I believe either one of you." I squinted my eyes at them.

"If that's true, what are you guys doing here?"

"Lunch break." I looked in the direction the voice was coming from to find Gabby with a grin on her face, holding up a huge bag of goodies from Laura's.

"We thought that we'd keep you company."

"Diego." I smiled at him as he walked behind Gabby with Laura next to him. "Just the guy I wanted to see." Adam helped me back to my room and settled me on the bed and pulled the chest table to my bed, Diego coming to stand across from me, everyone wlse just standing about in the room, chatting.

"Did you move one of those pieces?" Diego looked at me.

"I wouldn't dream of it." I smiled at him. We played for a few minutes while Gabby passed the food around and I only had time to take one bite before the cramping in my back came back, now stronger than before.

"Are you ok Haley?" Diego asked with a worried expression on his face, making everyone else turn to look.

"Yeah I'm fine." I tried breathing through the pain but it was now hurting at the base of my swollen belly.

"Do you want me to get the doctor?" Adam was at my side in seconds.

"Maybe the nurse can give me something for the pain." I breathed in and out to try to push through the pain. The nurse came in quickly and looked me over before she smiled at me.

"I won't be the one giving you pain meds hun, you're going into labour." I looked up at her and then at Adam.

"I can't." I stammered. "I'm only at thirty four weeks and a half."

"It's going to be fine darling." Adam kissed my forehead.

"We'll settle you properly and call the doctor so you can be wheeled directly in the OR to deliver your baby boy." She patted my leg and left. It was only then that I realized that the room was now empty, leaving only me and Adam.

"Haley, look at me." Adam had his hands on my cheeks. "You and Evan are going to be great and we're going to meet him soon." I nodded, trusting him with all my heart. An orderly came to wheel me out of the room and both Matt and Gabby were quick to be at my side.

"You're going to do great Hales." He kissed my forehead and smiled at me.

"Thanks." I had tears in my eyes but managed to give him a small smile.

"I'll take care of calling everyone."

"Thanks Matt." Adam gave him an appreciative nod before they wheeled me past everyone so they could prep me for the OR. They took me through a set of double doors, Adam being taken to be scrubbed in so he could be with me. It only took a few minutes before we were reunited again.

"We're almost ready Miss Reed. After I'm done giving you the anesthesia, it shoouldn't be very long before you get to meet your baby boy." Dre Young said behind the blue curtain. "So I need to take some deep breaths, can you do that?"

"Yes." Adam held my hand and gave it an extra squeeze.

"You're going to do great darling." He kissed my forehead. It was hard to tell the time from where we were but it seemed like time was at a stand still.

"What's going on Adam?"

"I can't see but I'm sure everything is ok." He pushed a strand of hair out of my eyes. Suddenly, a baby's cries pierced the air.

"Congratulations mom and dad, you have a healthy baby boy." A nurse quickly cleaned him up and took him to us, putting him against my chest.

"Hi Evan." I couldn't help the tears that rolled out of my eyes.

"Wow, I can't believe he's finally here." I hadn't seen Adam cry a lot but his eyes were filled with tears.

"Look, it's your daddy." Evan's little eyes fluttered open and closed and he looked at Adam before he started squirming so I tried to get him positionned properly so I could try to breasfeed him and he quickly latched onto my nipple and he stayed there contently.

"You were amazing babe." He kissed my forehead.

"You are all set to be brought to your room." I hadn't noticed that the Or team had cleaned everything up and now our new reality finally kicked in. "I'll come check on you later."

"Thanks." I smiled at Dre Young before she patted my leg.

"Congratulations again."

"I'll be waiting for you on the other side of the doors." I nodded to Adam before we went back to change into his own clothes, my bed being wheeled out of the OR and back onto the maternity floor. I was wheeled back into my room and it was now filled with blue balloons and congratulations card on the small chest at the far end of the room.

"Is everyone in the waiting room?" I hadn't had time to notice who had been added to the small group that was in my room.

"Everyone is there except for the 21st, they're on a case but Platt will tell them when they get back."

"How about the two of you rest and I'll go give them an update."

"Ok but as soon as 21st is here, we have to tell them."

"We will." He smiled at me. Evan was already asleep in the small crib next to my bed and for some reason, I was a bit tired too. Adam kissed my forehead and left the room.

I woke up a bit later to Evan crying but when I got to get up, Adam was sitting next to me, talking to him. I listened to him a bit, a smile on my face.

"This world isn't always an easy one. Daddy's seen a lot of bad people on our streets but we are going to protect you with everything we have."

"And daddy is the best one to that job." Adam looked at me with a smile and in that moment, we had the mutual understanding to give our life to protect our son.

"Hey beautiful. Hope you're rested because everyone is anxious to see you."

"I need some help to sit up higher though."

"Alright bud, I hope you're ready because you have a very big family now."

"How about we ask the two of them in first?"

"I'll be right back." He winked at me and put Evan next to me before he left, returning a few minutes with both Kelly and Erin.

"Hey, how're you feeling?" Kelly came to hug me first, Erin at Adam's side.

"I'm starting to feel my lower abdomen so pain meds are getting out of my system but otherwise, I feel great."

"Can I take him?" Erin gushed next to Evan's crib. I exchanged a look with Adam and he smiled at me again.

"Well he needs to know what his godmother looks like." Erin barely held a squeal in.

"Haleyyy." She gently picked him up and took a seat in the chair in the other corner of the room.

"We wanted him to have strong and caring godparents." Adam and Kelly exchanged a look and Kelly's smile was wider than I had ever seen.

"I'd be honoured man." They hugged. Erin refused to let go of Evan as Jay and Voight came in, followed by my parents and Adam's who had just arrived from vacation to find out the news from Matt by voicemail. Most of 21st came and went with the exception of Jay who stayed with Erin who didn't want to leave just yet even though she had to hand Evan to my mom and Sophie. After leaving us to get some sleep after their long flight, 51 started coming in small groups so we wouldn't be overwhelmed leaving Herrmann and chief Boden next to last.

"You did great kid." Christopher hugged me, eying Evan in his crib, asleep through all the commotion.

"Thanks Chris."

"We got ourselves a smoke eater there Wallace."

"Hey hey, not too fast there Herrmann." Adam argued. "Let the kid grow up before you start on the corruption." I gave myself permission to laugh, even though it pulled a lot at the c-section site.

"Come on Christopher, let's give these kids some rest. You know how much sleep they'll have now." He snickered.

"Thanks for the vote of confidence chief." I dead panned.

"I have to be honest with you otherwise I wouldn't be a very good leader." He leaned down to hug me, placing a kiss on my cheek.

"Thanks for everything you've done for me Wallace." I whispered in his ear before he pulled away.

"One of the best decisions I've made in my career." I blushed and smiled at him before both he and Christopher left, leaving the cake for last. Matt and Gabby came in with a sleeping Charlotte in her stroller.

"Hi Hales." Matt pulled me into a hug, keeping me in his arms for a few minutes. "How're you doing mom?"

"Didn't think I'd feel so good after everything."

"How long did they say that you'd stay in here now?" Gabby asked.

"Doc hasn't come by just yet but I think three or four days. I can't wait to sleep in my bed."

"Just a few more days Darling." He kissed my temple.

"Gabby?" I couldn't believe that I hadn't noticed it before. "Is that?" I looked at her with a grin on my face. She looked at Matt and they both smiled before she answered.

"Yeah. We found out a few weeks back."

"A few weeks? You look like you're at least ten weeks along."

"Six actually." Matt corrected me.

"I'm showing way faster than when I was pregnant with Charlotte."

"This is going to be so much fun. The two of them will be close in age."

"And with Evan too." Matt added.

"CFD/CPD bbq's will never be the same that's for sure." Adam beamed.

"Today was a good day." I leaned my head against the pillows, Evan suddenly whimpering in his crib.

"I guess that's our cue to go." Matt came to hug me. "Congrats again Hales."

"I'm happy for the two of you too." Gabby kissed my cheek, my hand coming to rest on her small bump. "Take care of my niece or nephew."

"Only if you do the same."

"Night guys." Gabby waved at us before they left. Adam gave me Evan so I could nurse him and he took a seat next to me on the bed, putting his arm around my shoulder.

"Tired huh?"

"Yeah, it's been a very long day."

"The best day."

"I wouldn't trade it for anything." We stayed like this until Evan had stopped sucking on my nipple, his eyes closed, his first few hours in the world already tiring him out.

"I'll take him, you should get some sleep."

"Only if you sleep with me on this very uncomfortable bed."

"It works good enough for me." He settled Evan in his crib and came to lie down next to me. I tried getting as comfortable against him, trying to mind the scar that was still fresh from the c-section but sleep took me quickly, my body tired from the whole day.

Four days later - Adam's POV

I woke up from the odd angle I found myself in the small cot that had been provided to me by the hospital and found the room empty. I ventured out of the room to the nurses station to find out she had gone for some routine tests for Evan and that Dre Young was going to check on her so we could go back home today. She had kept Haley an extra day for precaution and she hadn't complained one bit about it but today was supposed to be the day and we were supposed to surprise her with the new house and a baby shower that we didn't have a chance to plan for her because she had been admitted to the hospital. She was being wheeled out of a room as I rounded the corner to go meet with her. Evan was tucked in a blanket, wide awake.

"I've got her." I told the nurse who nodded.

"I woke up and you were gone. Is everything ok?"

"Yeah, we're all good and ready to go."

"Did I miss Dre Young?"

"No. She's going to be by a bit later to sign my walking papers. I can't wait to be back home in our bed."

"I miss you there." I played into the conversation, knowing what was waiting for her at home later. Matt had texted me that everything was ready last night and that everyone would be home early to make sure that everyone would be there when we arrived. "Let's get your things together so we're ready to go as soon as she comes by." I wheeled her into her room, coming face to face with Dre Young.

"Just the couple I was looking for. How're feeling Haley?"

"I'm ready to go home."

"Well we won't keep you here any longer. Make sure that you take it easy for a little while, there's no need to rush into getting back to your usual routine.

"I'll make sure she has plenty of rest."

"That's what I like to hear. Congratulations again and if you need anything, don't hesitate to call my office for an appointment."

"Do we need to come in for a follow-up?" I asked, making sure we didn't miss anything.

"My secretary will call you with all the dates. Take care." She smiled at us before leaving us alone. I took Evan from Haley and set him down in the crib before I drew the curtains and helped her into some street clothes. She bundled Evan up in a little bear suit and we secured him in the car seat, the nurse making sure everything was up to code and we were free to go. Haley insisted that she walk out and we slowly made it to the exit.

"Ready?" I asked her after I helped her into the passenger side.

"Take us home." She took my hand and we were on our way. I kept glancing at her to see when she would realize that we weren,t going the normal way towards home. It took a few blocks longer than I thought before her body language changed.

"Adam, where are you going?" She finally looked at me.

"Follow the car, we're almost there." I turned on a far less busy street lined with houses.

"Adam, tell me, you know I hate surprises."

"Oh you'll definitely like this one." I parked in front of a house and helped her out, taking Evan and his car seat out too.

"Why are we stopping at this house?" I could sense her frustration at my lack of answers but I guided her towards the front door.

"Welcome home darling." I whispered in her ear from behind her, making her painfully turn to face me.

"Home?"

"Surprise." She turned again and pushed the front door open only to find another surprise waiting for her.

"SURPRISE!" Our whole family and extended family was waiting for us.

"Oh my God." Her hands flew to her mouth, her eyes filling with tears. "When did you do all of this?" She asked as she was swarmed from our friends.

"I had a lot of help." Haley didn't have time to ask anymore questions before the girls took her ans sat her down in the middle of the living room, putting a blue flower necklace around her neck.

"So since we weren't able to do this while you were pregnant for obvious reasons, we figured that we'd have a party in your new house to celebrate Evan's arrival." Gabby said with a smile while I took Evan out of his prison.

"You guys are totally crazy." She laughed.

"This is all for you darling, welcome home." I kissed her before I left her with the girls to have fun together while the guys hung around in the kitchen and the back yard.

Evan slept through the whole commotion of the day and everyone started trickling out mid afternoon, leaving us for a little quiet evening as a family.

"I can't even believe you did all of this."

"It took a lot of planning and lots of help from our friends."

"That's why you smelt of paint the other day."

"Yeah, Matt helped me with everything. He,s the reason we got this house."

"But when?"

"While I was undercover." I pulled her to me on the couch.

"Evan just won the jackpot with you. I can't even begin to say how much I love you right now."

"I love you too." I kissed her forehead, Evan asleep in his playpen. "Want to see the rest of the house?" Haley had seen the main floor throughout the day but the upper level was still unexplored.

"That sounds great." I helped her stand up and I took Evan so she could keep her strength up. We slowly went up the stairs,me taking the rear just in case and we made it to the first floor. To the left, there was a small room that was mostly used for storage for now and next to it was a full bathroom and to the right, two more rooms. We looked at the master bedroom first, the grey walls and blue white cover giving it a peaceful feel.

"And for the very last surprise." I pushed the door to Evan's nursery opened to reveal a star inspired nursery, the top of the walls a navy blue and the lower part white. This was the last room I had painted with Matt, the day that Haley had gone into labour.

"Adam." She gasped. "Is that what you were up to the day I went into labour?"

"Yes. Matt and I started early that morning."

"It's beautiful." I watched as she ran her fingers along the white crib, her eyes roaming the rest of the room. "Welcome to your new room Evan." She took him gently from my arms and settled him into his crib. I leaned against the doorframe watched her dote on him, the smile never leaving my face.

"I've never thanked you for giving me the best life I could ask for." I pushed myself from the door and went to circle her waist from behind.

"It's not perfect but I'm happy I get to spend the rest of it with you." She leaned her body into my chest.

"It's pretty damn close." We watched Evan sleep and enjoyed the rest of our evening in our new house and in our new life, one I wouldn't change for the world.
