Chapter Fifty-One
"Can you please state your name and age for the record" said the detective.
"Mibushi Takao. 18 years old."
"You are in your final year of Kaijou High School correct?"
"Yes."
"The school has reported that you have been absent since it re-opened last week. Is that true?"
"Yes."
"Can you account for your absence during that week?"
"I was at home. I had some stuff to take care of."
The detective mused over this for a moment. "What kind of stuff?"
"It's personal" Mibushi replied.
"Does this stuff have anything to do with that black eye of yours?"
Mibushi didn't reply.
The detective continued. "I've seen my fair share of black eyes, hell I've even had a few of them myself, and that one looks fairly recent. And sore. How did you get it?"
"I tripped."
"You tripped?"
Mibushi nodded. "Hit my head."
"Of course you did. Do you know a boy called Shima Takashi?"
"Never heard of him."
"Maybe this will jog your memory."
The detective placed a photograph in the middle of the table. The young boy smiling at the camera had platinum blonde hair and bright blue eyes.
Mibushi shook his head. "I've never seen him before."
"He was attacked two weeks ago. He was found lying bloody and broken in the grounds of Kaijou High School after a basketball game. He was pregnant."
Mibushi remained silent.
"The young lad who found him says he was ran into by someone running away from the same direction he found Shima-kun in. He claims that, that someone was you."
"Well he was mistaken."
"Really? So where were you the night of Friday the 22nd between the hours of 6pm and 10pm?"
"I was at the basketball game. Ask my friends."
"And after that?"
"I went home."
"You went home? Did you stay home?"
Mibushi nodded.
"Is there anyone who could vouch for that?"
"You could ask my mother. But she'll probably be too intoxicated to remember."
The detective didn't respond. Instead, he reached into his folder and placed another photograph on the table in front of him. The slight flinch made by the boy opposite did not go unnoticed.
"Horrific isn't it? This was how he was found. 16 years old and almost beaten to death in his own school. One broken arm. Several broken fingers. Cracked ribs. A head injury. I was informed today that that same head injury could possibly lead to a lifetime condition." The detective placed another photograph on the table. "Seven and a half months pregnant. The doctors say that his arms took most of the beating as he probably used them to try and protect his baby. He had to undergo an emergency c-section. Fortunately his baby survived although two months premature. But Shima-kun was in a coma for a week." Another photo on the table. "He's unable to feed his son. Hold his son. Comfort his son. He'll probably never be able to use his hands the same way again. Did you know he was a pianist? A child prodigy some people call him. He was hoping to go to music school. I've already mentioned the life changing brain injury right? He had his skull drilled into yesterday to help relieve some of the pressure put on his brain. The doctors don't know what the lasting effects might be. But one thing is certain. His life will not be the same again."
The detective paused, somewhat pleased to see the boy in front of him looking distressed.
"Brutal. Horrific. A hate crime. Beating up anyone this badly is bad enough but a 16 year old pregnant boy? Now that's something else. It seems to me whoever did this knew exactly what they were doing. Waiting for the right moment. Now, I'll ask you one more time Mibushi-kun. Where were you on the night of the 22nd between the hours of 6pm and 10pm?"

"I don't believe it!" exclaimed Tachibana, "they released him?"
"Not enough evidence apparently" Keiji explained. "Plus a solid alibi."
"Guess that brings us back to square one huh?" said Kise.
The three of them were on their way to class when they noticed Mibushi standing with Sawada and the rest of his gang.
"I don't get it!" said the brown haired girl. "How can they just let him go? You even said that he was the guy who ran into you, isn't that evidence enough?"
"Apparently not" Keiji replied. "But there's no doubt he's being watched. The police will be all over this one. He is their only lead after all."
"I can't believe they let him back in school."
"It's been three days. Every child has the right to an education."
Tachibana turned to Keiji and said, "you're a journalist! Can't you do something?"
"Like what? I cover the sports section for a high school newspaper. I'm not a criminal investigator."
"Yeah but surely you can find something on the guy."
Keiji sighed. "The police will have a better chance of finding anything before I do." He then turned to Kise who had chosen to remain silent throughout the conversation. "You ok man?"
"Huh? Oh yeah, sorry. Just spaced out a little." Kise continued to look at Mibushi who was remaining quiet whilst the rest of the gang went about their usual antics.
"What do you think Kise?" asked Tachibana. "You think he did it?"
Kise shrugged. "I have no idea." Out of all of Sawada's gang, Mibushi was the one Kise knew the least. Whenever he happened to be with Sawada, the black haired boy was always silent and barely looked Kise in the eye. Kise couldn't recall a single time the pair of them had actually spoken with one another.
However, despite that, Kise would never have pinned him for someone who could commit such an horrendous crime. He just didn't seem the type. Kise didn't know why he felt that way, he just did. Call it gut instinct.
"Well, there's nothing we can do about it now is there?" said the blonde. "We just have to leave it up to the police. Besides, it might have been a complete coincidence that he was there that night."
"Coincidence my arse" said Keiji. "He was definitely running from something that night. I'm telling you man, he couldn't wait to get away from there."
The bell rang and everyone began heading off to class. The trio watched silently as Sawada's gang dispersed and headed in their own directions. Kise didn't take his eyes off Mibushi and watched as he pushed himself off the wall and headed down the corridor.

Aomine and Momoi were sat at the back of class, talking. The teacher had assigned them pair work to do which they had already finished thanks to Momoi's due diligence. In hushed voices they continued their conversation.
"So, they don't know for sure if he did it? That's why they released him?"
Aomine locked his phone and shook his head. "Of course he fucking did it. How much more proof do they need?" He had just received a text from Kise informing him of Mibushi's release and subsequent return to school. To say the bluenette was pissed off would be an understatement.
"You ok?" asked Momoi.
Aomine sighed. "I just wish we went to the same school. So I could keep an eye on him."
"Who, Kise or Mibushi?"
"Both."
"Look, Kise will be ok. He can take care of himself. Plus he has loads of people looking out for him. Not to mention the entire faculty. They wouldn't let Mibushi or Kise back in school if they thought something bad was going to happen."
Aomine didn't say anything. He had no idea what to think anymore. He had finally thought all of this was over. That they had caught the person responsible and that his boyfriend and unborn child were finally safe again. And now they were right back to where they started.
"You've got your trip this weekend haven't you?"
Aomine nodded.
"Is Kise going with you?"
"Yeah. If he's feeling ok. It's quite the distance for someone who's gonna be pushing out a baby in two months."
"But Shiro-san's taking you right? It'll be nice to get away for the day."
"Yeah I guess. As long as this Coach Nakahara and his team don't try anything funny..."
"You need to start trusting people. Not everyone is out to get you, you know."
Aomine sighed and leaned back into his chair.
"Have you heard anything from Shima-kun?"
Aomine shook his head. "Not yet."
Momoi didn't say anything else. Her best friend looked exhausted. It had certainly been a tough couple of weeks and it looked like they were finally beginning to take their toll. She just wished there was something she could do.
The bell rang, signalling the end of class. Without a word Aomine got up, packed his things and left.

Kise was on his way to the sports hall. School was over and it was time for after school practice for the team.
The blonde was almost there when he heard a small clink. He looked down and noticed something shiny on the floor. Momentarily confused, Kise checked the front of his bag and noticed that his basketball keyring was missing. The chain must have broken.
Kise placed a hand on the small of his back and started to bend down. His fingers brushed the top of the keyring but his back was refusing to let him bend down any further. He straightened up and tried to catch his breath.
He couldn't believe how out of breath he was over something so little. It was during moments like these when Kise was reminded of how pregnant he actually was and that he couldn't do things he used to be able to do so easily, like bending down.
Unwilling to give up, the blonde placed his hand against the bottom of his back and tried again. However, he didn't even get half way before a pale hand appeared in front of him, scooping the keyring off the floor.
"Here."
"Thankyou-"
Kise stopped short. The person stood in front of him was Mibushi Takao. Kise could feel his heart start to race. "Err…thanks." He stammered as he took the keyring. Upon closer inspection, Kise noticed the bruise around Mibushi's left eye and the dark circles underneath both. He also looked a lot paler than usual. He looks really rough.
"You're welcome" said Mibushi. He then brushed past Kise and headed towards the school gate.
Kise didn't realise he had been holding his breath until Mibushi was out of sight. He placed one hand on his stomach and closed his eyes. Once he'd calmed his nerves he carried on towards the sports hall.
"Yo Kise" greeted Kasamatsu. "You're right on time. We were just going over…you ok?"
"Huh? Oh yeah sorry, something's just startled me that's all."
Kasamatsu looked concerned. "What's that?" he asked, pointing to the keyring in Kise's hand.
"Oh nothing," replied the blonde, putting it in his pocket.
"Ok... Anyway, we were just going over the starting line-up for the next match. We were thinking of letting the first strings take it. It would be good for them to get some practice."
"Yeah that sounds like a good idea."
"Ok, great. Coach'll be here in a minute. He'll run you through the rest. Now go sit down. You look like you're forcing yourself to stand."
Kise smiled. There was no point denying it. He walked over to the bench and sat down.
Half an a hour later, Kise was watching the team practice their dribbling. He stood up and walked up to the team's coach, needing to stretch his legs. Even sitting down became uncomfortable after a while.
"What do you think?" asked Coach Takeuchi.
"Looking good. The first years still have some way to go, but their technique is far from bad. I think the team is in good hands."
Coach nodded in agreement. It was after all, the final year for the starting line-up. Including Kise. They all knew that Kise would be leaving school once the baby was born. Kasamatsu and the other guys would all be going to university. But Kise wasn't disheartened. He knew the team would continue to grow just like it always had.
Kise was about to say something else when he felt a dull ache coming from inside his lower abdomen. He placed a hand on top and began to rub. However, the ache seemed to be getting stronger causing Kise to grit is teeth and bend over with one arm wrapped around his stomach.
The coach did a double take. "You ok Kise?"
Kise didn't reply. The coach blew his whistle, causing everyone to stop what they were doing. Kasamatsu noticed what was going on and quickly made his way over. "What's happening?"
"I don't know. Someone go get the nurse!"
"I'm ok…" Kise breathed. The pain was beginning to subside. "I think it's over." He straightened up and allowed himself to be guided to the bench.
Most of the team had gathered around him, concerned expressions on all of their faces.
"You're not having the baby are you?" asked Hayakawa.
"No…" replied Kise. "At least I hope not. I'm ok now."
The others didn't look convinced.
Fifteen minutes later, Kise was in the nurse's room, having his blood pressure taken. After taking down the readings and having a good feel of Kise's baby bump the nurse concluded, "Braxton Hicks."
"Braxton Hicks?" repeated Kasamatsu.
"They're false contractions right?" said Kise.
Nurse Yanase nodded. "They're not uncommon in pregnancy. They become more frequent as you approach full term."
"But what triggered it?"
"It could be anything. Stress. Dehydration. Sometimes they don't even need a trigger. I'm pretty certain it was a Braxton Hicks contraction but you need to monitor and time if you have any more. If you experience more than four in the space of an hour, you could be going into preterm labour. If so, you ring your MOP immediately, do you understand?"
Kise nodded.
"How will he know if he's having another one?" questioned Kasamatsu.
Kise answered, "If it's anything like the last one, I'm pretty sure I'll know. Man, that took me by surprise. I dread to think what the real thing feels like."
Nurse Yanase smiled. "Braxton Hicks can be painful but they don't last for long. The best thing to do is to drink plenty of water, change position, walk around. Braxton Hicks are irregular. They can happen at any time. They're more of an annoyance than anything else. The real thing is a lot worse."
"How worse?" asked Kasamatsu.
A knowing grin appeared on the young nurse's face. "Try squeezing a watermelon through your nose and you'll get the picture."
Kise gulped. Kasatmatsu was having a hard time picturing it and instantly regretted asking.
"So everything's ok with the baby?" Kise asked.
The nurse nodded. Kise and Kasamatsu breathed a sigh of relief.
"The best thing you can do now is go home and get some rest."
Kise nodded. "Thankyou."
"You're welcome."
And with that Kasamatsu helped Kise off the bed and the pair headed home.
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
"Here."
"Thanks."
Kise took the tea off his boyfriend and took a long sip.
Aomine sat down next to him on the couch and began tucking Kise's hair behind his ear. "How are you feeling?"
"Good thanks."
"No more Braxton Hicks?"
"No. Thank god. It really scared me for a moment."
"Yeah, I bet."
Kise took another drink.
"Kise?" queried Aomine, knowing that there was something on his mind. "What is it?"
Kise looked at Aomine, contemplating the best way to tell him. "Don't freak out ok?"
"Ok…"
Kise sighed. "Just before I got to the gym, I ran into Mibushi." Kise noticed the sudden change in his boyfriend's expression. "Remember the keyring you got me for my birthday when we first started going out? The chain snapped and I couldn't bend down to pick it up. There was no one else around. Or, at least that's what I thought."
"Did he do something?"
Kise shook his head. "No. All he did was give it back to me and then walked away. But he came out of nowhere. I didn't even hear him. It kind of freaked me out a little bit. It was just the two of us."
Aomine took a deep breath. He had promised not to freak out. If he lost his rag over every little thing that Kise told him happened at school, there was no doubt his boyfriend would stop telling him things. "Do you reckon that's what started the Braxton Hicks?"
Kise shrugged. "I don't know. Maybe. Nurse Yanase did say they could be brought on by stress. But let's face it, things haven't exactly been stress free lately have they? Then again, it could've been a coincidence."
Aomine didn't say anything.
"I just wish it was over." Kise continued, his voice barely a whisper.
"Me too. But don't worry. Mibushi won't be free for long. They'll find some evidence against him and he'll be put away. And then our lives can go back to normal."
"Will it though? Will it ever be over?"
Aomine looked confused. This was the first time he had ever heard Kise say something like that. Usually he was the one questioning everything around them and Kise was the one to calm him down and reassure him. But Aomine could see the walls around Kise's heart beginning to crumble. "What do you mean?"
With tears forming in his eyes, Kise said, "will people ever stop treating me like some sort of disease? Will they always look at our baby like they're some sort of animal just because they have two dads? When will it stop Aominecchi? When will people start treating us like ordinary people? I don't want our baby to be brought up in a world, treated like a freak. I'm sick of the laughing, the pointing, the stares. I'm sick of people commenting and judging me every time they see my stomach. I'm sick of feeling like…a freak. I thought I could shut it all out and ignore it but I can't. I'm too tired. And after what happened to Shima-kun? Just because he was pregnant? I don't want the same thing to happen to me. I don't want someone to hurt our baby." At this point the tears were pouring down his face and a sob broke past his lips.
Aomine was speechless. He had never seen Kise like this before. He took the cup from his boyfriend's hand and put it on the table. He then wrapped his arms around his blonde and held him tight.
Aomine knew he had to be strong. Even though he could feel his own resolve starting to break, he knew he couldn't let it. And there was no way he was about to sit there and watch as his boyfriend gave up. Kise had more strength than the pair of them put together and Aomine didn't know what he would do without it.
"Kise…" he began, "I promise I won't let anything happen to you or our baby. You have my word. And I swear to you that even though it doesn't seem like it now, it will get easier and that our baby will only know love and joy. I don't know a single person who will let it be any other way. Our son or daughter is going to be surrounded by love. So much love that they won't even know or care about what anybody else thinks."
Kise didn't say anything. Aomine continued to hold him close and stroked the top of his head.
"It's going to be ok Kise. I promise. And besides, if The Bump is anything like their parents, I feel sorry for anyone who tries to get in their way. Our very own little Asskicker."
Kise laughed.
Thank God Aomine thought.
Kise looked up, his eyes puffy and his cheeks red. "We're not calling our baby Asskicker."
"Give it time" Aomine winked, "you'll get used it." He then kissed the top of his boyfriend's head and held him in his arms as the blonde eventually fell asleep.

Where am I? Why is it so dark?
Shima looked around. He couldn't see a thing. He was outside and there was not a single light in sight. It was cold and quiet. Not a sound to be heard.
He was wearing his black jeans and striped hoodie. He looked down. His stomach was flat. He placed a hand on top.
A baby's cry pierced the darkness. Shima looked around.
Takumi? he called. Takumi?
The cries were getting louder and more frantic.
Takumi! I'm coming Takumi!
Shima started moving forward. He had no idea where he was going but he knew he couldn't just stand there. However, no matter how far he went, there was no sign of his baby.
Takumi!
Shima could feel his own heart beating erratically. But suddenly, everything went quiet.
Takumi?
He could hear a faint whistling coming from behind him. It sounded familiar but Shima wasn't sure where he had heard it before. The whistle was growing louder.
Shima stopped walking and turned around. There in the distance, he could just make out the outline of someone walking towards him. Whoever it was, was tall and wide. The whistling was becoming louder and clearer the closer they got.
Who are you?
No answer.
What have you done with my baby?
No answer. Just a whistle.
Shima could feel his head start to hurt. He tasted something metallic in his mouth. He raised his hand and touched his lips. Blood. The pain in his head increased. His vision was blurring but he didn't take his eyes off the person walking towards him.
Where is my son!?
The whistling stopped and turned into laughter. Dark, cold and maniacal.
Pain suddenly shot through Shima's stomach. He doubled over, feeling as if he was being ripped open from the inside. He heard a crack and felt the bones in his right arm break. He cried out in pain and fell to the floor. Blood was dripping over his left eye.
He was alone. There was no-one there to save him or his baby.
Takumi!
The laughter increased, the footsteps drew nearer. Shima looked up.
You?! Where's my baby?
The person in front of him stopped laughing and raised a fist. The world went black.
Shima woke up gasping. He was covered in sweat and felt like he couldn't breathe.
"Takashi? Baby?"
It took Shima a few moments to realise where he was and who was talking to him.
"Hey, baby it's ok. It was only a dream."
The room was dark with only the faint glow of a lamp lighting one corner.
Shima's head was throbbing. He raised his hand and touched the bandage.
"It's ok" assured Tamaki, taking her nephew's hand. "Everything's ok."
"Where's Takumi?"
"He's right here."
Tamaki scooped Takumi out of his cot and placed him on Shima's knee."See? He's ok."
Shima instantly felt himself calming down. He held his baby close and closed his eyes, refusing to let go.
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
"A swelling on the brain?" repeated Kise.
Shima nodded. He looked physically and mentally exhausted. Not that any of this came as any surprise. The doctors drilled into his skull three days ago.
"Do they know what caused it?"
"The head injury from the attack. They think it's just been growing over time. Nothing appeared on their scans when they first brought me in. Apparently I'm lucky. If it hadn't erupted when it did, they might not have been able to do anything."
"I'm sorry Shima-kun."
"It's ok. It's not your fault. The doctors don't know how much damage has been caused. They say it'll take at least six months to recover."
Kise's eyes went wide. Aomine took his hand and squose it tight.
Shima continued. "They want me to see a specialist."
"That's good isn't it?" asked Aomine.
Shima nodded slightly. "Yeah I guess. But…"
"But what?"
Shima waited a moment before answering. "The specialist is in Nagasaki."
"Nagasaki?" Kise repeated. "But that's hours from here. It's on the other side of the country."
"Yeah I know. They say he's the best in Japan. Once I'm well enough, Tamaki wants to move their asap."
"Move? Like…leave?"
Shima didn't say anything.
"But it's to help you get better right?" interjected Aomine. "Surely that's a good thing?"
"In theory" Shima replied. "It's a private hospital. There's no way we can afford it. Tamaki's talking about selling the house and using her savings but…I can't let her do that. And even if I did, I don't think it'll be enough."
"So…what are you going to do?" asked Kise.
Shima shrugged. "I have no idea. I'm too tired to even think about it."
Aomine and Kise looked at one another, not knowing what to say.
A small knock at the door broke the silence. A nurse entered and informed the boys that Shima needed his rest and that they could come back tomorrow.
After saying their goodbyes, they left the hospital.

Tamaki unlocked the front door and headed straight upstairs, without removing her shoes or coat. She made her way into her nephew's bedroom. She stopped in the doorway and looked around. The room was exactly the way it had been the night Takashi was attacked. The bed was still unmade and there were still clothes on the floor, needing to be put away.
Tamaki walked over to the wardrobe and began picking out fresh pairs of pyjamas. She tried to ignore the doctor's words going around in her head as she folded them and put them in the bag on the bed.
Internal bleeding. Swelling on the brain. Relieve the pressure. Traumatic brain injury. Lifelong effect.
Tamaki stopped what she was doing and placed a hand to her mouth. She didn't want to cry. She hadn't cried once since that night. But she couldn't help it. It was as if the lid on her emotions had been ripped open and everything just came pouring out. Hurt. Grief. Fear. Anger.
She crumpled into a heap on the floor and sobbed. Her cries filled the room.
Once everything was packed, she walked over to the bookshelf. She smiled at the total disarray of her nephew's collection. Takashi loved to read. Almost as much as he loved playing the piano. The thought of her nephew never being able to play the piano again pained her heart. But she tried not to think about it. Instead she focused on the books in front of her.
Running her fingers along the seams, she studied each title. She wasn't sure what Takashi had read and what he hadn't. But that didn't matter. Her fingers stopped at To Kill a Mockingbird. She pulled the book from off the shelf and looked at the front cover. This will do.
As she went to put it in the bag, she heard something fall from between the pages. Tamaki bent down and picked it up.
It was a photograph. A photo of her nephew and an older man. The man had dark hair and wasn't Japanese. American? British? On the back was a number. A phone number? Tamaki's eyes went wide as realisation hit. This was the first time she had seen a picture of him. Since finding out her nephew was pregnant, they had only spoken about who the father was once. And Takashi had made it abundantly clear that he didn't want him involved in their lives in any way.
But that was then, when things weren't as desperate as they were now.
She held the photo close to her chest, resolve in-tact, knowing what she had to do.

Mibushi Takao was on his way home. It was late, dark and cold. He had his headphones in and his music turned up full.
With his head down, hands in his pockets and The Prodigy blasting in his ear drums, it was no wonder that the eighteen year old didn't hear the person creeping up behind him.
"BOO!"
"Holy fuck!" Mibushi removed his earphones, feeling like he had just had several years added onto his life. The guy responsible burst into laughter.
"Sorry man" apologised Sawada, not really sounding sorry at all. "I tried shouting you but you wouldn't answer. Those things are gonna make you go deaf you know."
Mibushi didn't say anything.
"You heading home? Where've you been?"
"Out."
"Where?"
"What are you keeping tabs on me now too? I already have the police on my case."
Sawada held up his hands in surrender. "Just curious."
Mibushi waited a moment before answering. "I was at the library."
"What, all night?"
Mibushi nodded. "I had some things to think about."
"Like what?"
"What do you think?"
Sawada sighed. "Guess you're right. Sorry, that was dumb. I'm just worried about you that's all."
"Well, don't worry about me. I'm fine."
Sawada blocked Mibushi's attempt to walk past him. "Are you sure? You've had a tough couple of days. You need to chill out, relax. You're free. They let you go."
"Yeah for now. I'm still being treated like a criminal. Innocent until proven guilty huh? That's bullshit."
Sawada didn't say anything.
Mibushi sighed. "What do you want Sawada?"
"I'm just here to see how you're doing."
"Well I'm peachy, thanks for asking. Now, if you don't mind…"
Sawada stood aside and allowed Mibushi to continue down the street, making no attempt to follow him. He smiled.
Mibushi carried on walking, not turning back. He fumbled with his earphones and stuck them back in his ears. But before he turned his music back on, he heard the faint sound of someone whistling coming from behind him. He turned around but there was no-one there.
He pressed play.
