CH 45

"You did what?!" Megane's voice is heard through the phone. Olivia decided to get in touch with them to try and figure out all that's happening. She told Megane about the incident in the Special Victims Unit and, of course, the vampire reacted in surprise.

"I throw the man through a window." Olivia repeats as she looks at the blonde's face through the video call.

"Oh gosh! What happened to your super-self-control, Olivia?!" Megane asks with a really concern expression in her face. "Are you in trouble?"

"No, I handled it pretty well." Olivia assures her. "Actually that is not my biggest problem right now." And she decides to take the conversation to what the actual issue is.

"It isn't?" Megane says as she hates the idea of a worst problem than throwing a human through a window in the middle of a police department.

"No. I think I'm been watched." Olivia tries to explain what she hasn't figured out herself yet.

"Watched? By who?"

"I don't really know." She sits in her bed as she holds her phone in front of her face. "Well, Zal has been around."

"The wolf?" Megane listens to the name and immediately associates it with the werewolf.

"Yes, she was spying on me or something. So I faced her." Olivia tells as short as she can. "I think she is just worried about me been a new vampire."

"I guess." Megane says finding the explanation reasonable as she knows the pact Stephen has with the pack of wolves

"What did she say to you?" Mario's voice is heard and soon he appears in Olivia's phone screen.

"She was surprised of me been in such control." Olivia explains. "But she did say she didn't trust it would last. I don't know if she is the responsible of the human-blood bag."

"What human blood bag?" Megane asks not following the conversation.

"Oh." Olivia expresses as she notices she hasn't explain everything to them. "I guess you didn't leave a human-blood bag on your secret fridge."

"Of course not!" Megane answers disapproving her even thinking they could be responsible for that.

"Well, someone did." Olivia says making a grimace at the memory of the moment she found it. "And that same someone stole the security videos of the SVU and left them in my apartment."

"Do you think the wolves are behind it?" Mario asks already putting his mind in motion.

"That or…" Olivia let out a big sigh before daring to put her thoughts in words. "The Families are actually closer to find out about me than we expected."

"The last time I talk to Stephen he said everything was alright." Mario says trying to calm the anxiety he notices in both the women. "They don't seem to have a clue about you."

"You talked to him?" Olivia asks Mario as her interest gets diverted. "When? I haven't been able to contact him."

"Yes. Few day ago." Mario answers. "He is not alone so he won't get in touch with you until he knows it's safe." And explains the reason why Stephen has been all disappeared lately.

"Oh I see." Olivia says without trying to hide the disappointment. "Then that leaves us with the dogs messing around with me."

"They won't hurt you." Megane assures her trying to give her some calm.

"Did she noticed your sun-curse free situation?" But the seriousness in Mario's question doesn't really help.

"Yes." Olivia accepts remembering her encounter with Zal. "I make her think it was my personal gift."

"It's not a lie." Megane exclaims.

"Why?" Olivia asks Mario as she notices how he is thinking deeper. She would like to make her gift work through technology. But this way she can't get inside their minds so she has to wait for an answer.

"I don't think the wolves would like a vampire not been cursed by the sun." Mario finally explains the reason to his question. "Stephen knows more about it, but I do remember something about a war between vampires and wolves."

"War? I need to know more about this hostility their kind seems to have with ours because I'm dealing with a wolf here." Olivia expresses not liking the few information she has about it. "I just know they are huge wolves, they change at will and I shouldn't let them bite me."

"They stink." Megane adds to the list making a grimace of disliking. Mario laughs a little bit.

"Yes they do." Mario accepts.

"Look. What I know from legends and old stories is that a really long time ago they were cursed just as we are." Megane decides to speak been the oldest of them.

"The sun cursed them?" Olivia asks really interested in getting all the information she needs.

"No. The moon." Megane says with an isn't-it-obvious tone.

"Oh. A full moon?" Olivia says as she remembers the stories she knows about werewolves, no quiet sure it will be the same giving the stories of vampires weren't exactly what she read in her human life.

"Yes. They couldn't turn if it wasn't in a full-moon-night." Megane keeps explaining. "Their bite is supposed to be lethal to a vampire. Like venom or something. I've never seen one but I'm not interested in finding out if it's true."

"Oh. I thought we were invincible eternal creatures." Olivia says not liking the image that is form in her imagination.

"Not really." Mario says. "We can be destroyed. Not easy but possible."

"Ok. And then what?" Olivia tries to make Megane keep going with the story. "The wolves I saw in Stephen's mind changed by will in broad daylight."

"They broke the curse." Mario says getting a slap from his beloved. He just laughs knowing how much she hates that someone else finishes the story she is telling.

"What? How?!"

"That's the part no one knows." Megane hurries to get her story back. "It seems that The Families had them under control because as long as they were in their human form they were easily killable. Then they got free from their curse and things changed."

"That doesn't make much sense." Olivia expresses a little bit disappointed with the short story. "How come vampires still exist?"

"My question exactly." Mario says as he remembers that was his exact same words the first time he listened to the story.

"Vampires had a leverage." Megane answers with the only answer they have supposed every time they tried to figure out more.

"Still have, I guess?" Mario says. "Because there is a strange peace pact we all know about. We don't mess with them they don't mess with us."

"So, do you think my no curse situation will affect that strange peace pact?" Olivia asks with concern in her words.

"Been curse free doesn't really give us any advantage over them." Megane says her mind. "It forces us to stay hidden from humans but, it doesn't affect us in any other way."

"They breaking their curse meant something in those days. Maybe there is more than we know with the sun curse." Mario makes the observation.

"Well, I made her believe it was my gift. I mean, I'm the only one curse-free."

"It is kind of your own gift." Megane accepts.

"I'll stay alert. Whoever is behind this is not exactly trying to go unnoticed." Olivia says referring to the notes left behind. "Somehow he or she is trying to get my attention."

"Be careful, Olivia." Mario tells her with evident concern in his voice. "And keep in touch."

"Sure. What about you guys? Have you find out something about Megane's gift development?" Olivia decides to ask remembering her own gift development as well.

"Not really." Megane answers with evident disappointment. "We are heading to Mexico to see this shaman that may be able to give us some answers."

"Shaman?" Olivia repeats the word in curiosity.

"Yes. There is a little magic town called Tepoztlán where there is this shaman vampire with this gift that allows her kind of see other vampire's gifts." Mario explains. "She will know if Megane's gift is in some kind of evolution."

"It hasn't happened again but I think it's a good idea to visit her." Megane says letting Olivia know she hasn't been able to see a death destiny while away from the human at issue.

"Maybe I should go see this shaman woman." Olivia expresses as an opening to tell them what happened to her own gift. "My gift has had a changed itself."

"What? How?" Mario asks really intrigued.

"I think I'm able to change human minds. I made someone change his thoughts." She tries to explain. "It is like if I could actually take their thoughts and change them at will and then put them back in their minds." She looks at her cellphone's screen as both the vampires at the other side stay still in surprise. "It helped with the precinct situation." In view of the lack of response she decides to keep talking. "I made one of the officers change his report and, I even tried to make the suspect decide not to press charges."

"Did it work?" Megane asks really curious.

"Yes. Kind of. Should I go with this shaman of yours?"

"No. No one has to know about your existence. Remember?" Mario answers even though he would love to take her right now to Tepoztlán.

"How is everything with you so damn evolved?" Megane decides to put both their minds into words. "A gift evolving takes years!"

"I don't know. Should I be scared?" Olivia asks feeling nervous about their reaction.

"No." Mario decides to intervene not wanting her to panic. "We know you are not a normal vamp." He expresses. "But there is nothing to be worry about. Actually we should be happy. All this is functioning into our favor. You have to stay where you are. Keep your human act on. Take advantage of your gift to find out who the hell is messing with you. It's ok, Liv."

"We'll be back soon." Megane assures her wanting to calm her as well.

"Ok. I'll stay here. Ahm… if you hear of Stephen can you please let me know?" Olivia asks them.

"Yes." Mario is the one to answer as Megane just smiles. "I'll tell him to call you as soon as he can."

"New Year's ball will be in a few days and he will be back to NYC too." Megane explains wanting to let Olivia know she won't be alone much more time.

"New Year." Olivia repeats the words as she remembers the holidays approaching and knowing that, with his brother away and Elliot mad at her, she will actually be alone.

"Do you have plans for Christmas eve?" Megane notices the disappointment in Olivia's face and decides to ask.

"No. I think I'll stay home." Olivia says without much encouragement.

"We left you plenty of blood bags, you can make your own special dinner." Mario jokes a little bit.

"Yes, frozen blood." Olivia expresses with a grimace of disgust that makes Megane laugh. "I'm thrilled."

"And… Elliot?" Megane decides to ask pushing Marco away letting him know this is a girl's talk.

"What about him?" Olivia asks back with a question though she kind of knows where Megane is heading and not wanting to talk about him. For some reason she doesn't want to tell them about the fact that he is already suspecting.

"Can't you spend the holidays with him?" Megane decides to make a more direct question.

"He will be with his family." Olivia answers as short as she possibly can.

"Oh." Megane expresses without having more to add.

"I'll be fine. I'm used to be alone, anyways." Olivia tries to make the young Megane feel less guilty about leaving her.

"Meg. We have a plane to catch." Mario says letting his beloved know she may end the call. "We'll try to get some information about your gift with the shaman without telling about your existence. Maybe she knows someone with a similar gift that can actually give us a clue of what to expect next."

"Thanks Mario." Olivia says sincerely though she would love to actually be able to visit the famous shaman. "Have fun. Take pictures. And… come back soon?"

"Sooner than you expect. I promise." Megane says.

"Keep in touch." Mario asks. "And let us know if you figure out why the wolves are messing around with you."

"I'm sure they are just trying to make me do a mistake." Olivia says her hypothesis.

"Don't make a mistake." Mario asks with seriousness in his voice.

"I won't. I'll be more careful." Olivia promises glad to have kept some information to herself. She doesn't like them not trusting her. "See you." She says goodbye ending the video-call. She looks at the cellphone and decides to check her messages but there is nothing new. Stephen will contact her whenever he thinks is more suitable. Elliot won´t contact her anytime soon, she guesses. He left really angry the night before and, knowing him, he will keep distant for some days. That´s fine. Olivia hates been on a fight with him but, right now, she thinks him been apart is actually the best for his own safe.

So, she spent the next few days in motion. She kept her human act at all times while trying to figure out if someone was following her but she didn't discover anyone. She went shopping for the first time in a long time trying to get her wardrobe back to her style because if she keeps using Megane's clothes she is afraid she will end up liking her sophisticated style. And she refuses to lose herself more than she has already lost. She doesn't have her job now and, because of it practically been all her life, she doesn't know what to do with her time and with her whole existence. So she decided to get herself a human routine. She gets out every morning to take a run in central park as if it will actually help her stay healthy. She got used to take some food and water at the street just to seem more human, in case there is someone watching her that she hasn't noticed yet. She thought on calling Casey Novak or Odafin to get out for drinks or to the movies but she doesn't want to involve them right now. Elliot, as she expected, kept his distance. So she went to the movies and to the mini golf and subscribed herself into a GYM liking to climb up the fake rock every now and then just not to miss the mountain, of course it couldn't be compared. She tried to attend all this places at hours when they wouldn't be full. The cinema at mornings, the gym at midday and the mini golf at nights. Sometimes she just stayed at her house and read… a lot. She even tried to find some more information about vampires and werewolves on the internet but there is way too much information and she has no way to know which can be true. So she made a list to make sure to ask Stephen later.

She faced Elliot again two weeks after their fight at the court room when she attended to see the man she throw through the window get a life sentence. She is more than happy to know her gift worked. The man never pressed charges and he ended up declaring himself guilty after some victims decided to speak up. All Olivia's doing. But they didn't exchanged words, they just look at each other and nod. This was their personal signal on letting each other know they will end the fight soon. So she just let it take its normal course glad to feel that hasn't change between them

.

She fed, she went to the vampire's apartment, and she finds another note in the human-blood bag that said: 'You'll like it.' So she decided to go shopping, this time for a security video camera, she installed it on the hidden room hopping to finally find out who was messing with her. She went again to find out the human-blood bag was empty this time, which meant the prankster has been there so she took the DVD's from the security system and took them back to her home just to find out the camera lens had been covered with another note that said 'Nice try'.

"Whoever is doing this is a smartass idiot." She expresses as she walks to her kitchen and looks at the coffee waiting to be drank.

"Not today." She talks to the dark beverage somehow glad to not have the need to drink it. She isn't planning on touching any human. Especially not today… Christmas Eve.

The melancholy makes its appearance. She should be used to it, every year is the same, the sooner the holidays get the bigger the melancholy turns. But this time it feels deeper and heightened, just as every other feeling she has. She is all alone.

Normally, if the job wasn´t too absorbing, she would pass for some takeaway junk food in her way back home and would enter to her apartment all exhausted and hungry. She would take her shoes off immediately letting her feet rest and would take one plate in order to let her exhausted body down in the bigger couch to eat all the food while watching some random TV show. But right now, she has lost her job, she isn´t at all exhausted, she is not hungry and her feet are perfectly comfortable. She looks at the faraway couch and tries to imagine the comfortable feeling it used to give to her soured back.

"You are useless now." She whispers again talking to an inanimate object.

She lets her gaze down trying not to go deeper in that silly game. If she starts to think how useless every object is in her apartment she is afraid she might get actually depressed. And something catches her gaze. The thin gold necklace resting in the kitchen counter. She takes it in her hand and looks at it remembering the night she lost it. She didn't even notice its absence until Megane's mind revealed her Kathleen had found it. Elliot made clear he already knows she was there that night. He already suspects but, what could he be suspecting? Olivia decides to get her mind busy with that. She tries to think as if she didn't know anything about vampires and werewolves. What could she deduced if she was on Elliot's position. Maybe she can find a suitable explanation to all. What does Elliot knows by now?

"Lets see." She says to herself. "MAYBE I was in the woods the night Kathleen was attacked." And tries to enlist the thing she knows Elliot know. "MAYBE I saved Kathleen that night, or MAYBE my necklace was there by coincidence." And Elliot's phrase gets to her mind immediately. "He doesn't believe in coincidences." She tries to actually think as if she was him. "So I was there and I saved Kathleen and then disappear again. Then, he saw me the next night in the storm, there is no way to prove that but… his stubbornness will make him be sure it happened. He have noticed the cold skin and maybe some physical changes." She remembers the uncertainty in his eyes when she fakes been tired and actually she looks fresher than ever. "And he saw the videos, which he can deduce I am just in better shape." She laughs imagining how confused Elliot may be right now. "I spent some days in the woods not knowing who I was, making a lot of exercise and feeling like some kind of superhero rescuing young ladies in danger." She laughs again picturing herself in a Spiderman costume running in the woods. "It´s better we keep apart for a while longer, maybe he will forget about it all." She finally concludes knowing there is no explanation he will accept by now. Though she would love to just tell him the truth and be able to have him near her. She would love to be able to kiss him again, to finally let those feelings out without repercussions. Now she prefers the repercussions it all could had had back when she was human. Now those repercussions seems so dumb. Compared to what can actually happen now if she let herself into her feelings for him. She lets out another big sigh. She takes a look to her necklace again and rolls her eyes at it. If it had stayed in her neck that night Elliot wouldn't have any evidence of Kathleen's words been true.

She decides not to put the necklace back on. Despite all, she wouldn't like to lose it. So she walks back to her room to put it in a safe place. She reaches her dressing table and looks around for her jewelry box not finding it anywhere. She opens the drawers but there is no jewelry box in there. She tries to remember the last time she saw it and the image of the little delicate box resting in the little wood shelf comes to her mind. "The Adirondacks." She says as she remembers she has asked Stephen to bring her the jewelry box back in her first days as a vampire. She remembers her last trip to the region and can picture the little tree house with everything just as she left it. Her books safe under the little wood table, her mother´s old jewelry box in the top shelf, the chessboard placed on the table without its white queen. She wonders if everything has remained untouchable after the wolves visit. What if they decided to mess around their house? She hates the idea. She really treasures the few jewels her mother have left her. Not for nothing she asked Stephen to come rescue them.

"Maybe I need a trip." She says aloud letting the fearlessness necklace inside one of the drawers and deciding to get her car keys. "If I'm spending the holidays alone why shouldn't I spend them over there?" There is a little voice inside her mind telling her to be careful, that maybe the wolves are still in the area, but then it is the perfect chance to face them and find out why they have been messing around with her. She takes some random clothes into a little backpack and puts on her black jacket just to keep up with her human act. She takes the cellphone, her keys and some cash for gas. "I'll have a well-deserved Christmas meal after all." She expresses already imagining the bear she will make her dinner out of.

She walks out her apartment and head to her car but she stops when she seen Elliot walking her way.

"Hey." She greets Elliot with a soft smile knowing this was the moment the fight was going to be over He just looks at her and moves his head in a lazy way to greet her back. "You got him." She decides to say referring to the suspect they saw getting to jail in the court room. Elliot just nods and looks at her not saying a word. "Good." And she doesn't know what else to say. Elliot gets closer to her and finally whispers some words.

"How have you been?" He asks with real concern.

"Fine." Olivia answers back with authenticity in her words. "What about you?"

"Busy." Elliot answers remembering the hard weeks he's had working with his new partner and been fighting between his ego and his concern for Olivia's safety.

"Ell, I´m sorry." She decides to be the one to concede this time. "I shouldn't have talk to you that way."

"Don't. I shouldn't force you to involve me in your personal stuff." His words feeling harsh on her. He sounds just as whenever they had troubles and he used their job as the perfect shield not to discuss the issue anymore. And she hates it. After all, her not been back at the job should actually have a good outcome in their personal relationship.

"Don't try that on me Elliot." She answers back giving him an angry look. "We are not partners anymore." She states wanting to see his reaction, his heart beats giving her the preview.

"What are we then?" He asks

"Friends." She answers without liking the word because it certainly doesn't describe their complicated relationship.

"Do you know how much you mean to me?" Elliot asks her with tears in his eyes. "Do you?"

"Not as much as you mean to me, Ell." The words slide out of her mouth straight from her frozen heart. "You've been all I've had for a long time. And you know that." Elliot's tears give up falling through his cheeks and he takes her strongly in between his arms, crashing her against his chest. She answers the hug back and enjoys his warm energy.

"I get it." Elliot whispers at her ear. "Just promise me you are been careful." He gives in. He doesn't know exactly what is going on in her life but he sense it is bigger than her. So big that he can't figure it out.

"Ell, it is not dangerous." Olivia moves apart and decides to lie to him.

"No dangerous? Someone has entered you apartment without your permission, and has stolen security videos from the police station. I'm sorry but that sounds dangerous to me. This days I've been asking for people to look out for you."

"What?" Olivia asks.

"I've been really concern, and you are not letting me be near you." Elliot explains afraid she will get mad again.

"Who has been following me?" Olivia is actually surprised. She has been paying attention to her surroundings and she hasn't notice anyone following her.

"No one. I just asked Mr. Rivas, the guy of the corner shop, to keep me informed of you been fine." Elliot explains pointing towards the little shop. "And Mrs. Davis has been informing me about you leaving or arriving to your apartment."

"My neighbor?"

"Yes." Elliot accepts realizing it sound kind of creepy. "And her grandchild told me you are going to the neighbor's GYM now." Olivia eyes get wide open. She hasn't notice any of them watching her, no wonder she hasn't find out who has been messing with her all this time. She sucks at been careful.

"How didn't I notice them?" She asks really worried.

"Because they are people you see every day?" Elliot explains with a little smile on his face. "Have you forgotten the first rule in undercover?"

"It works better when you become an insider. A common person." She hasn't forgotten it. Whoever is messing around with her knows that rule as well.

"Sorry but not sorry." Elliot expresses waiting for a reaction. "I'm not going to give up that easily."

"Stubborn son of a bitch." She expresses loving how he hasn't change much. She was trying to keep him away just to prevent him from danger but, actually, if he keeps trying to figure out what is happening by himself he might learn the truth sooner than she expects. Maybe, after all, it is better to have him near and tell him a suitable story instead of pushing him away.

"So, are you going anywhere?" Elliot asks noticing she is caring a backpack.

"Yes. I'm spending Christmas eve out of the city." Olivia says the truth.

"Alone?"

"Yes." She expresses opening the car door to throw her backpack there. "Unless you send someone to spy on me."

"No. I'm going with you." He says trying to get the keys from her hand, obviously failing at tit for her senses been way better than his.

"Elliot. You are staying here with your family and I'm spending a nice Christmas Eve alone in a nice cottage with a bottle of red wine…" She makes her statement while getting on her car and starts the engine, rolls the window down and finishes. "Next to a warm fireplace."

"You have it all planed uh?" Elliot expresses enjoying seen her actually free of stress. "And can I at least know where this cabin is?"

"Adirondacks of course." Olivia answers and decides to put the car into motion leaving a surprised Elliot behind.

"Adirondacks? Really!?" Elliot shouts hating that damn place.

To be continued…
