By the time Edward had made it back to the hospital, Charlie Swan was already there and he had a redheaded woman on the ground with her hands cuffed behind her back. The bronze haired doctor could hear her screaming about rights, but he wasn't worried about that right now. Looking around the area, he saw a nurse holding a crying Caleb, whose lips were very pale and he could tell she was trying to calm him down since the stress would do no good for her poor little heart.
Edward hurried over to the nurse and took Caleb from her since she knew he was he did not have to explain things so she trusted him; it was a perk from being a doctor that he had never appreciated before now. "Hey little man, it's alright, I am here now and your mama will be here soon. I need you to calm down for the sake of your health. Your mommy and I want you to live a long happy life, but if you don't calm down soon that simply will not happen son. You need to fight a little bit longer until a new heart becomes available. Please Caleb, we need you to hang on. You're a fighter just like your mom and that's how I know you can beat the odds no matter how high they may be stacked against you."
The baby boy blinked up at at Edward and for a moment the doctor felt as if Caleb could actually understand him and the words coming from his mouth. "You know, I know you won't remember this conversation, but I hope that one day you will see me as your father. I am going to give you a life lesson right now so listen close and try not to drool on me alright? Okay then, the first of what I hope to be many life lessons is that blood doesn't always made a family. I have family that I cannot even stand, but then I have friends, people you wouldn't expect, become like brothers and sisters to me. Family has nothing to do with biology and everything to do with personality and emotions. Trust can be everything and if you don't trust those around you then you can't really call them family; well that is how I see it anyways. Family are those in your heart, it's not something you can choose, but rather something you feel and I feel you are my son. Maybe when you're older you will feel as if I am your father or if not, I hope you least consider me a friend because I promise I am going to be there for you always no matter what. I'll never let anyone hurt you."
"Is he alright?" Edward looked up from Caleb when he heard Charlie coming over after handing the redhead over to two of his deputies. "By the time I got here the woman was holding a gun to one of the nurses heads demanding they turn over Caleb, but thankfully the nurse was smart enough to know that couldn't happen and she risked her life wrestling the gun away, but don't worry, she is perfectly fine, a little shaken up, but still fine none the less."
"Thank god." Edward breathed out a sigh of relief. "Remind me to thank her and talk to her supervises about giving her a raise. He appears to be fine as far as I can tell. I am going to look him over to be sure though I am confident he is fine. Leah should be here any minute so when she does get here do you think you could tell her I took Caleb for a few tests and that we should be back shortly."
"Can do." The chief of police stated before he paused and the look on his face making it seem as if he was fighting with himself. "Edward, I am going to talk to my daughter and make her understand taking Mason off the machines is the best thing for him. Bella doesn't understand how to make mature choices because she only cares about herself. I suppose a part of that is my fault and I plan to rectify that tonight. I will make my daughter do the write thing,, for once I won't give in to what she wants. I'm going to take a page from your example and finally be father instead of trying to be her friend. The funny thing is I see Leah more as a daughter than I do Bella and I am doing this more for her than anything else."
The young doctor smiled. "Leah does tend to bring the best out of people even if she doesn't see it. You're a good man Charlie and a good father. It's not fault for the way Bella turned out. Sometimes things are simply out of our control. You did the best you can and you are willing to admit that you've made mistakes; that makes you a great father. I have always considered you a second father to me and I know that if you wish to be in his life, Caleb will consider you a grandfather. He would be a very lucky boy to have a great man like you for a grandfather. Well I better go and get the little guy checked out. Thank you again for being here and making sure Caleb was alright. I don't know what would've happened if Leah and I had lost him. I know Bella hates me and she has already taken it out on our son and so again I thank you for not letting her take a second one."
"Thank you Edward for giving me something Bella never could, a family."
