A few hours later, Snape waited impatiently at the desk in his office.
As soon as the clock struck five, the door opened. Just as he'd asked, Hugo had escorted Lily to the office so that Snape could get to the bottom of whatever was going on this time.
"I've brought her, sir," Hugo said with such an amount of respect that Snape wouldn't have believed it possible from Ron Weasley's son.
Still, he was a Weasley, one who tended to go along with Lily's plans without very much hesitation. Snape curled his lip with dislike and said, "That much is obvious. Now that you have performed your task, you may leave."
Hugo threw Lily a look of sympathy right before he left, and she seemed to be trying to return it, but she ended up with a painful-looking smile on her face.
"Now let's cut to the chase. Evidently, you were up to something in Hogsmeade -"
"Yes, I was," Lily said, looking slightly amused.
"- And it would be in your best interest not to lie to me."
Lily gave a look of mock surprise. "You care about my best interest? Wow, you could've fooled me."
"Do not try to change the subject. What were you doing in Hogsmeade?"
"It was a private matter that I don't think you need to know about, but I'll tell you anyways. I was looking for something." He waited for her to elaborate, but she said nothing more.
"Looking for what, precisely?"
With a grin that reminded him so much of Fred Weasley, her cousin, she continued, "A crumple-horned snorkack, of course -"
"Do not play games with me!"
"Okay, sorry." But Lily didn't look all that sorry to him.
Then, before he could continue interrogating her, an angry knock sounded at the door.
