(a/n): Ok everyone thanx for sticking in there all this time.
Pixel claimed the title of 1st reviewer of the chapter. Duly noted. And, yes, Hermione did loosen up. She wouldve actually been mad about the late night. Time to mourn. And reward the heroes. *Medals my friend*
Next chapter we punish the guilty. Got a trip to the Wizarding World's sunny vacation spot in mind. Molly... well, it started way back when. Since, it's taken on its own life. Just like some people keep the Confederacy alive after 150 years. To get completely psychological about it, she blames Harry for everything that's gone wrong with her family for the last couple of years. It's his fault Seamus took advantage of Ginny, which led to Bill & Charlie landing in Azkaban. Saves her from realizing her, and her oldset kids' failings. And, of course, there's only so many times you can say you hate someone before the feeling is returned.
2 maybe 3 chapters left.
What did Neville do? Answered at once. As we pick up moments later. Griffindorry is a word. Just ask Luna.
54 – Neville's Folly and Ginny's Funeral
"That was remarkably fast." Madam Pomfrey commented as the doors burst open.
Behind a privacy screen was Alice Longbottom, who smiled at the new arrivals and handed them each a piece of crumpled paper. In the next bed was Frank Longbottom. Neville was leaning over his father with his wand connecting them.
"I tried to wake him." Luna said "But he hasn't moved in over an hour."
Madam Pomfrey reported "They both are breathing normally and calmly. By every measure, at least young Mr. Longbottom should be fully conscious."
"I should have guessed he might try something like this." said Hermione "No one in the entire school has been as determined to practice Legilimency. Even Susan was content with just protecting herself, not attack."
Harry opted not to clear up her misconception. Hufflepuffs were always being underestimated. "In reality, they're pretty much the same thing, Hermione." He said "Madam Pomfrey, it's obvious he's trying to do for his Dad what Harnevra did with Shirley."
"NO!" the Healer protested "I ABSOLUTELY FORBID IT!!"
Right then, Neville let out a piercing scream. Which caused Alice to follow suit. Loud noises often upset her.
Harry seized the momentary distraction and grabbed his Housemate's hand.
"Aw! Bugger!" Ron cursed. "Shoulda seen that coming!"
Mrs. Longbottom screeched "STOP YELLING!!" Then quietly offered Ron another crumpled paper.
"Pull a stunt like that again, Longbottom" Harry said, after just a few minutes "and so help me, you'll be cleaning Snape's cauldrons with your tongue. Til it falls off."
Neville merely offered a silly grin as Frank opened his eyes and asked, scratchily "Can I have some water?"
"Now Mum." He said. But as soon as he tried to stand, he crashed to the floor.
Harry chuckled tiredly and whispered "Tell Sue… I'll be skipping breakfast… And hex him to a bed."
"Thank you," sighed Mr. Longbottom before slipping into an entirely normal sleep.
Ordinarily, the Head Healer gave orders. It was her Hospital, after all. But, this time, she entirely agreed. Neville was entirely immobilized. And, since Harry was very much a Do as I say, Not as I do type, Poppy cast the same spells on him. Not quite knowing if they would actually do any good.
"You're going to keep worrying me, aren't you?" a disgruntled sounding Susan complained "And, you'd best not break out of those bonds, either. I'll keep you there if I have to sit on you."
And that was what brought Harry out of his own sleep. "Sounds good to me." He said as his eyes slowly opened.
"Is he always this pervy?" a tween voice asked.
Harry's eyes flew open "Woulda been nice if you'd told me she was here." He muttered, then addressed the younger witch "Hiya, Tina, long time no see. Thanks for reading to me."
"You're welcome." The blond Bones said, brightly "Any chance we could try boring for a change?"
Harry crossed his eyes at her and laughed "I'm trying." He said "Honest."
"Hmm…very trying." Susan sighed, dramatically "What happened? Shirley healed so easy?"
Harry didn't bother breaking the bonds that kept him in bed. He just shifted slightly. Tina's presence led to a half-truth "Then, Ginny and I worked together" he replied "Plus, Mr. Longbottom was much further …uhh… gone, I guess is the right word. And I had to pull Neville back, too."
"I've half a mind to shoot him in the leg again. Where's my brother when I need him?" Susan grumbled "Bet he did that on purpose, knowing you'd jump in to save the day."
Harry guffawed, which turned into a coughing fit. "That's silly!" he finally declared "Neville is not that sneaky. What I want to know is how Luna saw through my Invisibility Cloak."
"Good afternoon, Harry Potter." Said Ravenclaw appeared, as if on queue. She leaned over and hugged him "Thank you for helping Neville."
Harry replied, in like tone "You are welcome, Luna Lovegood. Be careful, the Snorkacks are sawing at his bonds."
"Oh…he'll not get out of bed." She promised "If necessary, I will sit on him and sic Cornish pixies on the Snorkacks."
As she left, Tina commented "She's weird."
"All blonds are." Harry snorted. That earned him a chuckle from Susan and a pinch on the forearm from Tina.
On her regular rounds, Madam Pomfrey stopped by and asked "Do you suppose I can let you up, Mr. Potter, without you getting yourself into further mischief?"
"Yes ma'am, you have my word." He said "I'll do everything I can to stay out of here."
She pulled her wand and said "Well, not much of a commitment, but it's probably the best I'll get. Very well."
"Nah…don't bother." Harry said. He was already sitting up and swinging his legs around. He grinned at her and, quite unapologetically, said "Sorry."
With the downfall of the Dark Lord, and the incarceration, or slaying, of most of his followers, the population of Hogwarts had thinned out. People returned to their lives and struggled to get them back to normal. And get Wizarding Britain's economy moving, again. For the most part, only students and professors were left.
This particular evening, however, just two days after Ginny's death, a great number of witches and wizards returned to the school. At first, the ceremony was to be at The Ministry. That idea was abandoned almost before planning began. The Great Hall's capacity was also quickly exceeded. It became obvious that the only place was outside. And, appropriately, the crater that swallowed most of Voldemort's army.
"GENTLEBEINGS ALL!" Amelia's magically amplified voice echoed across the assembly "Thank you for coming! Tomorrow, we shall mourn. This evening, we honor the heroic actions of those who contributed to the defeat of Thomas Marvolo Riddle Jr. also known as Lord Voldemort. You are all aware that his body has been on display for the last several weeks. In the very near future, I will formally end the war which essentially began nearly fifty years ago, with the body's cremation. What I hope we all take away from this occasion is that no one person should ever inspire terror. Certainly, we are not equal in power or knowledge. But no one person, no matter how individually powerful, can stand against all of us."
There was a round of united applause from the crowd which numbered several thousand.
"I hope to make us a far more inclusive society as well." Amelia continued her speech "To that point, I wish to acknowledge members of the International Confederation of Wizards who are here for what I hope will be an honest and open dialogue."
A less raucous applause came from the crowd.
"And, I see this as only a beginning." Amelia said "It is a more or less dirty secret, and not an especially well kept one that. You see, my very first word Gentlebeings was precisely chosen. There are among us, right now, any number of vampires and werewolves. Just to give two examples. We must talk to Giants, Trolls, Goblins and Centaurs, as well." She specifically left it there when writing her speech. At first she had included the word Muggles, but decided on baby steps.
Even at that, division was plainly visible in the audience. There was a measure of respectful applause. But, while no one outright booed, there were plain signs of disapproval.
Amelia noted easily from where the dissent was coming. She also knew that her editing Muggles out of her speech was a wise decision, for now. "A large number of senior students participated in a Hogwarts club known as The Defense League. They all, without exception, performed invaluable support in using their Patronus Charms to keep the literally hundreds of Dementors at bay. Every witch and wizard just named is hereby awarded The Order of Merlin, Third Class. Included is a cash payment of 10,000 Galleons. And, recognition of your status as full adults in our society. If you are mature enough to fight a war, then you can certainly be trusted with responsible use of magic."
There was an ovation as the recipients passed the podium.
Mr. Weasley passed out awards. Each received a bronze plaque, a certificate and an envelope. When they were done, he found himself with two leftovers. "Mr. Creevey and Mr. Longbottom do not appear to be present." He said "I think we can prevail on Miss Lovegood to accept Mr. Longbottom's award. Headmistress McGonagall, as former Head of Gryffindor, would you accept for Mr. Creevey?"
"Thank you, Vice Minister." She said, formally.
"Thank you all." Amelia said "It occurs to me that there will be a temptation, in future, to call me the Minister who awarded the most Orders of Merlin. I would like to state, now, before all of you, that they are the ones who did the brave deeds. I do not deserve praise for recognizing bravery." Led by the Minister, the crowd applauded again. "I yield the presentation of the Orders of Merlin, Second Class to the Vice Minister." She announced.
"For conspicuous bravery in defense of the Minister." Arthur announced "Order of Merlin, Second Class is awarded to Auror Robert Sharpe."
The pleased man struck a ramrod straight pose, marched up to Mr. Weasley in his dress uniform and bowed. Choked with emotion, he said "Thank you, Mr. Vice Minister."
"No, Robert." Amelia said, in a remarkable mix of the formal and personal "Thank you, for my life."
Sirius shook his hand as he came off the podium and said "Congrats. But, remember, she's still mine."
"Could make you fight me." Sharpe retorted, under his breath "You know what the best part is?"
Sirius gave a questioning look "?"
"Even if you get promoted, I still have this." answered Sharpe, brandishing the award.
Sirius rubbed his knuckles into his friend's head, and playfully growled "You'll always be Bobby to me."
"Sirius!" Remus hissed from behind "Not the time, or place!"
Allowing a hint of his animagus to appear, he pouted "Yes, Daddy Moony."
"The Order of Merlin, Second Class is hereby awarded to Frank Bones for his participation in the defeat of Tom Riddle and his followers." Arthur continued "In spite of his own lack of magical ability, Mr. Bones did more than any other individual to guarantee the safety of our forces. I wish to publicly state my position that Mr. Bones deserves nothing less than The Order of Merlin, First Class."
The lack of applause from certain quarters made the reason obvious. And, even deeper disapproval from those same individuals resulted from Frank's action. He brought Paula with him to accept the award. And had the nerve to hand the certificate to her.
"Mr. Vice Minister." Paula introduced herself and offered a handshake.
Arthur took the hand warmly "Of all the courageous acts, Mrs. Bones," he said "I honor your husband's the most. All of us had our magic to offer some protection. And, may I offer my condolence on your loss."
"Kind of you to say, sir, in light of your own grief." replied Paula.
Amelia gave her nephew a formal embrace. In the brief closeness, she apologized "I hope you understand why I blocked the First Class award."
"The about four hundred reasons." Frank answered, with a touch of bitterness. "Can I get Ole Bella out?"
She patted his shoulder and turned to resume her speech "The Order of Merlin, First Class was created thirteen hundred years ago. In all that time, three hundred and six have been awarded. Eighty of them have had to be presented to the recipient's family. I am pleased that we can hear a few words from at least one. You may have noticed a couple of omissions from my Defense League list. The first is Harry James Potter. Who, in addition to The Order of Merlin, Third Class is further awarded The Order of Merlin, First Class."
The Chief Healer of Hogwarts was a highly devoted professional. But, on this occasion, Madam Pomfrey was attending the ceremony taking place. It was really her first break in months. Currently in charge was a fairly young Mediwitch. She couldn't be particularly blamed; after all there were only two patients in the Hospital Ward. She fell into that range of witches who were simply enamored with Harry Potter. Nor did it matter that she was a good eight years older than him.
Wandering around, as she was prone to, Alice Longbottom found her way into where Neville had been restrained to a bed. In her fractured mind, she had no idea who the young man was. She just sat down beside him and hummed.
"Mum?" muttered Neville. The tune penetrated his awareness and woke him gently. It was just a bit of nonsense. But he remembered it from infancy. He could remember his father awake and alert. What he did not remember was Harry's involvement. It only took a second to realize that he was restrained "Alice." He said, firmly "get my wand please. What I did for Dad I can do for you."
Harry had only spoken for a couple of minutes, and his throat was quite dry. Although everyone insisted it was no different than teaching spells as in the DL, it looked to him like he was facing a million people "--- and last I just want to say I do wish that both Ginny Weasley and Professor Dumbledore were still here. They both deserve this more than me."
"Not at all, Mr. Potter." Amelia said, after the applause faded "One should never feel guilty for surviving what must have been an incredibly traumatic experience. Though, you should feel guilty for stealing my thunder."
Harry's embarrassed "Err…sorry." echoed through the crowd as well.
"No harm done." She replied lightly, squeezing his shoulder "I rather think everyone knew what was next. I mentioned before, the great rarity of the awarding of The Order of Merlin. There are, before today, only seven instances of multiple awards. There might be a few in attendance tonight who would remember a time when our next honoree was NOT an educator. Most of us probably only remember him as Headmaster. I'm speaking, of course, of Albus Dumbledore. I would ask that his brother, Aberforth, accept in his name."
Not a few gasps rose at the sight of the aged Hogsmeade bartender known as Old Abe
"Yes, the old coot was my brother." The man said gruffly "Who'd'a thunk it? Right? Well, I could spend all night telling you the problems we had. But, they don't matter no more. And, I guess, some things will go unsaid." He did shake hands with Harry.
Amelia stepped smoothly back into the abruptly abandoned center stage and said "Thank you Mr. Dumbledore. I am sure you could shed light on many things, but as you say, they are your affair. As with Mr. Potter, in addition to The Order of Merlin, Third Class Ginevra Molly Weasley is hereby awarded The Order of Merlin, First Class. It is my distinct honor to note Miss Weasley as the youngest recipient on record. The previous being Mister Potter, who held it for approximately nine minutes. Should have made your speech longer, Harry."
Restrained amusement rippled through the audience. Those who could see Harry clearly, whether due to closeness to the podium or magical glasses, laughed a bit more as he shifted his feet uncomfortably.
"Would that I could have presented this, today, to her." Amelia said "Certainly, the death of Professor Dumbledore was a tragedy. But, that war should claim the life of one so young. Yet, Miss Weasley if not joyfully, at least willingly and with no regret did what she saw as her duty. As many of you had seen, she was likely the most powerful witch of our age. What I will most remember, however, is a victimized girl who …instead of turning bitter and selfish… rose above her troubles and sacrificed herself for all our tomorrows."
Arthur accepted the plaque, certificate and envelope for one of Ginny's awards, Molly the other. "Thank you, Minister." She said, for everyone to hear. But, Amelia was one member of 'that family' who Molly had respect for, as it had been her that prosecuted Seamus Finnegan. "Thank you for your kind words. As Minister Bones said, we should much preferred to have watched our daughter speak. She---"
"What my wife wanted to say" Arthur took over as she wiped her face "is that, Ginny brightened all our lives. Our home will feel empty without her. But, we'll have today forever. Thank you."
As they took their places beside the other recipients, Molly hugged Aberforth and Arthur shook hands warmly with Harry. Arthur was just as cordial with Aberforth. Molly took Harry's hand coldly and with less than the minimum for politeness. Harry managed to keep his face impassive.
"That concludes our award ceremony." Amelia said, after a round of applause "There is one last announcement related to one honoree, I would like to make. After retaking the Ministry, I ordered every aspect of the Umbridge Regime investigated. Details will be in all papers over the next few days. But, tonight, it is my pleasure to announce that Miss Weasley's Great-Grandfather …Gideon Prewett… has been cleared of any responsibility for the Wizengamot Massacre. Interviews with multiple witnesses confirm Voldemort's use of an Imperius Curse after several minutes of torture. While it was certainly Mr. Prewett's body and wand that performed the magic, the will was Voldemort. The Ministry denounces all remarks made by Delores Umbridge and fully clears Gideon Prewett of any wrongdoing."
Molly squealed and clapped unabashedly like a schoolgirl. In her delight she unthinkingly threw herself, first at Arthur, then Aberforth and Amelia.
Harry stood ramrod straight like cold steel as he, too, was embraced "Unhand me!" he whispered harshly "And never touch me again!"
"There is another topic I wish to cover, this evening." Amelia announced. Her keen hearing warned her of the potential fight. She hoped she could head off a public meltdown, or at the very least, distract the audience. "This announcement is part personal, part political. They are both deeply connected. For the personal part… about a week before the overthrow of Minister Scrimgeour I managed something relatively rare… a brief vacation. Just a few days. Some of our naughtier newsfolk have reported an illicit affair in the Ministry. Well, I assure you, Sirius and I are not having an illicit affair, and we have the paperwork certified by the Magical Mayor of Las Vegas, Nevada, USA to prove it."
The audience was grappling with that for a moment. Sirius dissapparated from his spot and reappeared on the podium and, quite passionately, kissed her.
"Honestly. The man takes my breath away." Amelia said, rather girlishly "Now, because of the upset surrounding the period from Minister Scrimgeour's murder, through the events that brought us here today, Sirius and I only told select members of our families."
Rita Skeeter shouted "SHOCKING!! SCANDAL!!"
"Silencio!" Sirius fired off.
Amelia merely shrugged "The day, Miss Skeeter, that I cannot think at least one lap ahead of you, will be the day I commit myself to St. Mungo's." she declared.
Sirius' trademark barking laugh echoed in the evening air.
"From this point, you see" Amelia explained, like a professor "our scandal seeker would have started a whole series of articles condemning me for keeping a secret. Which would lead to various accusations. But, you see, they are irrelevant. And so is she. For, while every part of our charter confirms my legitimacy as Minister of Magic, I fully recognize that four coups in little more than a year would rattle people's faith in government."
Rita looked distressed, though whether from being deprived of speech, or the fact of being read so plainly and publicly, you couldn't tell.
"I am announcing my resignation as Minister effective September 1." Amelia announced "And, if you will forgive the pun, to show I am entirely serious;" --- she allowed a ripple of amusement to briefly interrupt her statement--- "I shall not accept any elective or appointed office in government. There is currently no formalized procedure for the office of Minister. I intend, this time, that election of my successor shall be by ballot of all citizens at least 17 years of age. That election to occur on July 31. Finally, I pledge… regardless of whom might be elected… even if I disagree with the outcome, I shall work during the transition to ensure a smooth transfer of power."
A voice protested "MUDBLOODS!!" And several joined in.
"I am a first generation witch!" Amelia challenged "Edgar Bones was a Pureblood, so is Sirius. The Weasleys are Pureblood, mostly by circumstance rather than intent. But, where do you draw the line? Can anyone answer that? It is now a matter of public knowledge that the greatest enemy of so-called Mudbloods was himself a Half-Blood. But, by all means, run for office. Don't just be a voice in the crowd. Let's find out how many truly agree with you."
Xenophilis called out "What are your plans for afterward?"
"That is for my husband and I to decide, Mr. Lovegood" she replied "For now, let us conclude this ceremony."
Little time had passed. Pictures were taken. People were just wandering about, talking in groups. Many, who had not been at Hogwarts during the recent war, were fascinated by the cavernous hole in the school grounds. Headmistress McGonagall reluctantly acknowledged that the crater had certain historical value.
"You looked so uncomfortable." Susan commiserated as she linked her arm with his.
Harry growled, not at her, just at the situation. "How do you do, Tom?" he shook hands.
"Congratulations, Mr. Potter." the manager of The Leaky Cauldron said "I suppose my name is destined to be a curse now."
Harry gave a slightly sour chuckle and grumbled "Fame, gotta love it."
"Harry, this time you actually are a hero." Susan whispered in his ear. Though she said it with the mild irritation of someone repeating something for about the ninety-fifth time.
After Doris Crockford, there were some other well wishers, then Marcus Flint "Potter …" he said emotionlessly "what do you say to rumors that you are leading a plot to destroy the Slytherin-Pureblood segment of our society?"
"That you're about as talented a newsman as you are a Seeker." Was Susan's coldly disinterested retort "Remember losing to a certain First Year?"
A dour red-haired man led by a certain vivacious brown-haired girl added "Seems to me it is people like you who are the main cause of your society's problems."
"Shut up, Squib." Marcus said, glaring at him with all the contempt of someone seeing gum on their shoe.
Offering a hand, Harry said "Nice to see you, again, Mr. Weasley. Hello, Wendy. Sir, this is my girlfriend Susan Bones. Sue, my accountant, and I think part goblin."
"Never did think much of you, Flint." Daphne Greengrass sneered. Her hand clasped George's tightly "Most Slytherins are smart enough to understand the world around them. And how it is changing."
The Seeker turned reporter sneered back "How can you waste yourself on a pathetic joker?" And he abruptly screamed.
"Hermione Granger taught me that one." Wendy said as everyone laughed at the running trail of smoke and flame.
"A piece of Muggle wisdom" Harry said, casting an amused look at Susan "never fight a war on two fronts. Picked that up from your brother."
George shook Harry's hand and said "Look, mate, Mum's …well… Mum."
"I know." Harry sighed "And I've given up. I don't want you apologizing for what she says. I guess there's always gonna be some Weasleys I'm friends with and others…not. Where's Ron?"
George chuckled and answered "Making time with Eloise Midgen."
"Isn't she a Second Year!?" Harry burst out.
"BWAHAHAHAHA!" George laughed deep in his belly "Nah…she's just small for her age."
Harry laughed back "She's small for Tina's age, too."
"Ronnikins wanted to make sure his next girlfriend didn't dump him for another girl." George said, greatly amused, then suddenly turning somber, "On a serious subject Mum mentioned---"
Harry cocked an eyebrow and asked "mentioned?"
"Well … bluntly…" George continued "That it would be disrespectful for either of you to show up tomorrow."
Harry snorted in annoyance and countered "Yeah, I'm sure that's how she said it. After everything … I not only have the right to be there. I have a responsibility to talk. Even if it rather annoys my girlfriend."
"Dunno." Susan said "I can find a kind word or two, too."
George looked pleased, and surprised. Even a little choked up. He gave her shoulder a squeeze, whispered "Thanks." And left, taking Daphne along.
"Have you thought at all about what you're going to say?" asked Susan.
Harry shook his head "Not exactly. I want to tell the truth as far as possible. But, your Aunt was right, people aren't going to believe… or understand… certain parts."
"Got that right. Not sure I would've believed it, if I hadn't seen it." She quipped, catching the purposely vague reference "We could talk it through. Make sure you're not breaking any secrets, or saying anything objectionable."
He yanked playfully on a lock of her bright red hair and teased "Then you get to know my deepest darkest opinion of my ex."
"OWW!" Susan whined, dramatically. Then, she bumped his hip with hers and chuckled. Under the guise of the smile which was for the crowd around them she answered "I think we covered that already. But, let's make a discrete exit. Tomorrow's going to be a long day."
The funeral of a recipient of an Order of Merlin, First Class, was an event. And, despite the Hundred Thousand Galleon award that went to the Weasley family with the medal, The Ministry covered all expenses associated with Ginny's funeral. All the tables in the Great Hall had been removed and it was filled with chairs. A room meant to feed a few hundred at a single seating, had been converted to sit well over a thousand. The customary colorful House banners were gone. Today, only Gryffindor banners hung from the ceiling and they were all black.
The front was naturally reserved for the Weasley clan. It was at Mrs. Weasley's angry insistence that two spots remain empty. When asked, she was more than willing to explain about her imprisoned sons.
Everyone already present turned as Harry and Susan entered. Besides the sea of Hogwarts students, the first recognizable face was that of Viktor Krum. The Bulgarian Seeker was sitting next to an exceptionally beautiful woman.
He clicked his heels and bowed formally to them. "I regret the circumstances, but it is goot to see you both, again. My vife-to-be, Ekaterina. Perhaps I should caution you. She is a full Veela."
"Good to see you, again Viktor." said Harry, as he shook hands quite casually with the tall dark woman.
Susan found herself rather unable to break eye contact with the youngster next to her.
"Nicolas!" Ekaterina snapped, breaking the spell "You must forgive my LITTLE brother. He is not used to so many non-Veela."
Harry yanked on his girlfriend's arm and said "See ya later, Viktor."
"I am SOOOO sorry!" Susan whispered "I just couldn't help myself."
Harry just chuckled "Remember Fleur? At least you didn't spill pumpkin juice all down your robes."
"I wasn't ready for it." She explained, still disturbed "So I never even thought of setting up a block."
"Excuses, excuses." He teased "Maybe I'll send Gabi an owl."
Susan hid an inappropriate giggle behind her hand and a cough. She took her boyfriend's arm and mischievously pinched the soft flesh near his armpit.
Harry didn't even flinch. He was distracted by a look of total loathing from Colin Creevey. Harry felt a deep sense of guilt over the younger Creevey's death. The circumstances under which Dennis' body was discovered still gnawed at him. And the only real logical explanation was that Ginny's last boyfriend was Tom Riddle's first murder. But, that memory simply did not exist. Harry did have a memory of Harnevra's confrontation with Colin. It left him rather angry with the older Creevey. And, obviously, nothing had changed. He shrugged and turned away.
Luna Lovegood was sitting with her father in the section just behind the Weasleys that was reserved for Order of Merlin honorees. She looked very upset.
"Why don't we sit here, Harry." Susan suggested, indicating the sad girl. During the long weeks of siege, the girls had become rather friendly. This was especially true after Susan's aunt had saved the life of Luna's father.
It didn't take Harry's using his mind, not that he would on a friend, to see how upset she was "I know Ginny was your friend." He started, kindly.
" Neville---" Luna began, sadly.
Her father cut her off rather harshly "Is an idiot and unworthy of my little girl! Mention not his name!"
"Tell us what happened." Susan said softly.
The saddened Ravenclaw sobbed "Alice died. Neville said it was his fault. That he'd killed her. Then he said we couldn't be together. That he was leaving. He said he'd come back---someday--- but not to wait for him."
"And that is the last thing which I will agree with that bastard on!" Xeno growled in a hushed tone.
Harry reached across Susan and gripped Luna's hand briefly. She favored him with a weepy smile. He did want to know more, but that was when the funeral ceremony started.
Ginny's body was floated in on a stone slab. A dozen Aurors near the front snapped to attention and crossed their wands over their heads creating a 'tunnel' for the body to pass through. The slab finally settled below where the Head Table usually is. Her hands rested on her chest, her face peaceful.
"Miss Weasley was one of the most powerful witches to ever set foot in these halls." Headmistress McGonagall said "She had a First Year experience that no one would envy. However, she rose above her troubles and became an excellent student. One who was a true delight to teach. And this past year, I began to think of her almost as a colleague. It is, perhaps, presumptuous of me but perhaps she would have been a professor someday. Not only do I mourn the premature death of a youngster, but the potential future."
Various of Ginny's friends and classmates spoke. Also, neighbors from Ottery St. Catchpole offered a memory or two. Luna had a difficult time speaking. She was entirely too broken up over the double blow of her oldest friend's death and Neville's disappearance. Xenophilius spoke briefly before sitting down again and consoling her. This brought attention to Harry.
"I'm …uhhh… not great at this speaking thing." He said, nervously "But, ermm…Ginny was my… my friend."
The crowd reacted to that with signs of disbelief in some cases, derision in others. Mrs. Weasley turned away, stonily.
Harry glared at the back of her head for a moment, then caught Ron's eye and almost chuckled. He could tell that had it been absolutely any other occasion Ron would be enjoying himself immensely. Eloise Midgen was almost wrapped around him, while Hermione was holding his hand and seated just behind her was Shirley. At the moment though, Ron was intently focused on what his friend was saying.
"Ginny and me … we had a mission." He continued "She didn't have an obvious scar like me. But, through Voldemort, we were linked together in a way that's hard to explain. While we were away, we got to really know each other. You can't help it when you have no one else around day in, day out, for a month. I think Aurors understand it best … I lost a part of myself when she died." Keeping Harnevra a secret from Voldemort had made strategic sense. But, now, Harry felt it was too personal to discuss.
Susan nodded understandingly as Harry reached the part of his speech that she had a big part in writing.
Harry took a breath then continued "It's hard to easily describe my relationship with Ginny. Ron, Fred and George have stuck with me through thick and thin … like brothers. But, at one time, I had very non-brotherly feelings for Ginny. The best way… I guess… Professor Dumbledore and I had a lot of problems, too. But, in the end, considering everything that's happened, they seem unimportant. That's how I'll remember Ginny. Everyone knows something about the advanced Occlumency and Legilimency we taught. That's how we defeated Voldemort. At the end, right before he died, Voldemort stopped defending himself and just threw everything he had into one last attack. Ginny took most of that. And died from it. Without her, I don't know if I would have won alone. Let's not waste the chance her sacrifice gave us. Goodbye, Ginny Weasley."
"Pretty speech, Potter." Colin Creevey sneered "Well, Ginny Weasley was my friend, too. That's the formula you people use, isn't it? Right up til the bitch killed my brother!" Long gone was the over-eager, over-excitable boy that had first come to Hogwarts worshipping the ground Harry walked on.
There was an immediate negative reaction among the crowd. You did not do things like that. Speaking ill about the dead was impolite under most circumstances. Doing so during the person's funeral was taboo.
"Mudblood!" came from somewhere in the Hall.
All the Weasleys were up, led by an enraged Ron "Go on Creevey!" he shouted "Pull your wand so I can kill you!" But, as he charged he was tackled by Harry.
"STOP!" Amelia's amplified voice echoed through the Hall and was obeyed.
Colin's wand was already out. He pointed at the ceiling and yelled "AVADA KEDAVRA!"
"I have never been so ashamed of one of my own." McGonagall said "Mr. Creevey you are hereby expelled from Hogwarts."
Colin showed a flicker of distress, then focused on Harry "Why don't you tell them the truth, freak!" he demanded "I'd tell myself, but somehow I can't! But mark my words! Someone will pay for what happened to Dennis! EXPELLIARMUS!!"
One Auror, who was approaching him from the side, went flying and crashed into a group of onlookers.
"The next one dies!" Colin threatened "Proves you're a liar, Minister! Free speech? HA! And don't anyone try to follow me!"
Ron had fistfuls of Harry's robes and shook him "Wha'd'ya do that for?" he growled.
"I didn't want my friend to be a murderer!" exclaimed Harry "And I don't think Ginny would've wanted you killing Colin either!"
Mention of his sister made Ron subside "Don't matter anyway." he muttered "They'll get him. But if one of us sees him---"
"I do not understand." A confused Hermione said "Certainly Colin was rude. But why the…?" She broke off unable to find a word to fit the mood in the Hall.
"I was a friend of Ginny's." Susan declared, to the surprise of the attendees "That certainly wasn't always true. But, at the end …and knowing she had only a short time left…Ginny took a minute to make sure I did not make a major mistake. Her critical comment was one hundred percent spot on and I thank her for it."
While only a few people had witnessed Ginny's last minutes, the mood in The Great Hall improved at once even if most had no idea what Susan was talking about.
"The friends of Ginevra Molly Weasley have said their farewells." Amelia's voice echoed, concluding the ceremony "We commend her spirit to eternity. It is my understanding that a private burial will take place at the family home tonight." The only other sound was that of Mrs. Weasley wailing.
Percy was authoritatively lecturing on the Wizarding belief that Colin had desecrated the ritual and that Ginny's soul would seek revenge on the entire assembly. After some harsh whispering between them, Arthur left his wife standing with Fred and George. "Harry, I think you of all people deserve to be there tonight." He apologized "However, she is adamant."
"I'm not surprised." He replied with a shrug "But, it's fine, Mr. Weasley. You know, for a while I thought of her as the Mother I didn't have. Then after what happened between Ginny and me, well I did again for a while. Obviously I was wrong."
Arthur could only nod uncomfortably and apologize "I'm sorry, Harry. And, Susan, on behalf of my family I would like to thank you for your words. The notion of Ginny never resting is too horrible to imagine."
"You're welcome, Mr. Weasley." She replied "But, I did only tell the truth."
He offered a smile and briefly gripped her hand "Thank you, again." He said "I would like to think that even Ginny would have been pleased. Harry, you did a remarkable job of telling most of the truth."
"I don't think some things should be shared." Harry replied. Then, he lashed out quickly at Arthur's robe and pinched between thumb and forefinger was a beetle. He added "Such as with nosy reporters. Don't you agree, Rita?" He spun around and flicked the transformed witch toward the doors.
Xenophilius and Luna came up and he said "Arthur, we'll see you at The Burrow in a few hours. I'm taking Luna home to rest for a bit."
"You are the nicest people." The Ravenclaw said as she hugged first Susan then Harry.
He hugged her back, tightly, and said "You need anything…anyplace…anytime --- Just let me know."
"You think I might share a memory or two?" she asked quietly.
Once again, she surprised him with her insight "You'll have to explain that." He whispered "And I need to tell Sue."
"I'll still miss my other friend." Luna added as they broke apart.
Harry squeezed her shoulder and said "Thanks, from both of us. And…if Neville's really gone …then he's an idiot."
"Sue just told me about Longbottom." Said Ron from behind. "Bloke's got a screw loose.
Harry turned and smirked "If you're planning on starting a harem, I'd appreciate you leaving out my girlfriend."
"Dunno, Potter, you seemed to be doing alright with our loony friend." Ron retorted.
The two boys were targets of death glares from half a dozen sets of eyes. They looked at each other and laughed. "Guess we should enjoy it while we can." Harry joked "A couple days and we'll just be us again."
"Amen to that." Ron said, with feeling. He pulled Eloise close and squeezed her waist. A year below Ginny, his new girlfriend was the youngest by quite a margin. The bit of affection gave her some much needed reassurance. She smiled slightly.
From one direction came Sirius and Amelia, from the other, Tonks and Lupin. "Ahh…look dear" the recently minted Senior Auror said, airily "It's the Minister and the First Lady."
The teens laughed as Sirius flushed and growled.
"We just wanted to say how sorry we are, Ron." Remus said "I don't imagine the pain will ever go away. But, it will get better. It's good to see that you can still laugh, even today."
Ron shook hands with the former professor and said "Thanks Remus. But Ginny said she'd blow up a toilet seat on me if I turned all crabby."
"Smart girl, that Ginny." Lupin chuckled, briefly "I assume we're all going to The Burrow."
Harry cast a resentful glare at Mrs. Weasley and commented "Some of us are uninvited."
"I see." Lupin followed Harry's gaze and his eyes narrowed.
Harry could easily tell where Lupin's train of thought was going "No, Remus" he said "Ginny liked you a lot. If you want to go, you should. Don't do something you'll regret. I won't be upset. Go."
"As you say." replied Remus with a touch of petulance.
"I mean it, Remus." Harry persisted "And I don't imagine the Minister of Magic can fail to attend, or her husband."
Sirius chuckled slightly and commented "Notice how he's arranging things so that we're not here. Tell us, Harry, have you figured out how to get rid of Neil and Joan?"
"I think Harry and I are mature enough to make our own decisions." Susan answered while Harry blushed at the innuendo. "Nor do I think of today as particularly romantic."
Eventually, after everyone had offered their regrets and said their farewells, the couple was seen wandering around the lake. Harry's mind was constantly on the alert to brush intruders away and ensure privacy. "Something is on my mind, Sue." He admitted.
"You mean other than Colin Creevey, Neville Longbottom and the fact that no one seems to have found Umbridge?" she asked, with a hint of sarcasm "You know, Harry, you can't solve everything."
He half-sighed/half laughed and replied "Yeah, I know. And, you're right. Someone else can handle all that. No, this is …well… call it Harnevra business. I'm mixed up about what happened with Bill and Charlie Weasley. Despite everything that they did, it's hard for me to have Ginny's memories of what they were like and know they're in Azkaban."
"Well, I honestly think they got what they deserved." Susan countered "And, like we said back then, they did it once how do we know they won't again?"
Harry stopped, faced her squarely and acknowledged "Yeah, I remember every word and believe me I still agree with what we said then."
"Well, then?" she demanded, testily.
He shrugged and answered "I dunno. That's why I'm talking to you about it. Remember the way you stopped me from killing Snape back when he was still a Professor?"
"Uhh…yeah" Susan half-remembered "Wow…that seems like a lifetime ago. Though after hitting you with a Crucio, I'm sure you wish I hadn't."
Harry shook his head "And that spell was meant for you. Nah… it would've been wrong then. You've been doing that ever since we became friends. Stopping me from over-reacting."
"You know, no matter what you do, it won't satisfy everyone." She offered "Mum and Dad wanted their heads on a plate. And Molly thinks they did no wrong. What do you want?"
Harry gave a shrug and answered "I'm not entirely sure. I want to work something out that will let me sleep nights but not upset you. If we get that far, then go from there."
From there, the conversation became less serious. By the time they returned to the castle night had fallen and the couple was laughing together.
Upon their return, they were accosted by a Junior Auror with a letter. She saluted and handed it over with a snap.
"You shouldn't be saluting me." said Harry. "I'm not an Auror."
"Actually you are, sir. According to Director Shacklebolt." The young woman replied "And, even if you weren't, The Order is always due respect. May I ask? Is there a reply?"
Harry opened the envelope and his expression immediately turned stormy. His response was "Can I kill Snape without getting in trouble?"
"What now?" asked Susan. After reading the letter, herself, she turned to the Auror and asked "When is he due to go back to Azkaban?"
After glancing at Harry, the Auror answered "Tonight."
"Have you a quill?" asked Susan. After scratching for a few seconds, she offered it to him "Look good? Sign it?"
Harry chuckled, shook his head and answered "When I get round to it? … hahahaha… Sounds good to me. Please give this to the prisoner."
"With pleasure, sir." She replied, saluted, and departed.
To his questioning glance, Susan added "I don't see Snape having any claim on the bounty. After all, one was paid for his capture. Besides, he's not going anywhere. Let him stew for a week, maybe a month, or two."
"Or three." He added, agreeably
