Chapter 50
Song(s): Alone (Colin Newman), Smells Like Teen Spirit (Scala & Kolacny Brothers)
Starbucks, Route 18 North, East Brunswich, New Jersey…
"Ms. Adler? My friend Mister Verger would like for you to come and have a chat…"
Staring out the window immediately to her left, Oliveah felt her stomach sink as she caught sight of the back end of Freddie Lounds's car exiting out of the parking lot.
The one time I would want you to be around
"Doesn't the hired goon usually confiscate all means of electronic devices before herding the target into the back of a dark car?" she challenged, clutching her phone with hard steady fingers. Catching the man's eyes staring back at her from the rearview mirror, she felt her stomach lurch as he betrayed no show of emotion.
"You've watched too many movies."
Throwing her eyes back out the window, Oliveah slowly slipped the Blackberry out of her pocket and held it tightly as the BMW turned north to head out of the city limits. Keeping her eyes steady as she slid the device across her lap, she heard a low chuckle from the driver as his words made her blood run cold.
"Miss Adler please, feel free to contact Doctor Lecter and tell him where we are going."
…
Dr. Hannibal Lecter's Residence, 51 Springlake Way, Baltimore, Maryland…
Placing another hardcover first edition book into the sturdy box, Hannibal pursed his lips before grabbing the spine of another. Focusing his dark burgundy brown eyes on the contents of the box, he rested the palms of his hands on the edges before reaching for the lid.
Nothing in this house would be coming with them to France.
They would start anew.
All three of them.
Hearing the deep ring of the doorbell, Hannibal pushed the heavy box aside on his desk before walking out of the study. Rounding the banister of the wide staircase, he focused his eyes on the shadow on the other side of the glass window before pulling open the door. Feeling his lips twitch, he set his eyes on a familiar pair of blue before taking a step backwards.
"Hello William,"
Entering the kitchen, Hannibal breathed in deeply the faint scents of pine, nature, and earth that would forever linger on the body of the young floppy haired man as he laid a hand on the counter.
"Coffee?"
Reaching into the inside pocket of his brown beige work jacket, the young FBI Instructor withdrew a small white envelope of the highest quality paper and held it up as Hannibal turned around, spying the elegantly scrawled WG that he had written on the card.
"Your farewell dinner Doctor?" he questioned in a low tone as Hannibal sat a container of Black Ivory Coffee down on the counter next to the stainless-steel espresso machine.
"Our, farewell dinner" the Doctor corrected, opening the package of beans before taking out two matching white china mugs.
"Hannibal, please don't take her with you."
Listening to Will's pathetic mutter of a plea, he smiled internally as he went about with the espresso machine.
"Oliveah has made her decision Will, and your pleas will fall on deaf ears as they are now falling on mine" he added, taking out a bottle of organic cream from the refrigerator.
"If she wasn't pregnant with your child, would you be keeping her around?"
Watching the rich brown caffeinated liquid filling the first mug, Hannibal bit down on the tip of his tongue as the machine sputtered with the last of the espresso.
"Do not think William that I no longer see you as a problem. She will forget about you in time, after we leave this country."
Moving to stand beside the island as he breathed in the strong coffee, Will placed his hands on the edge of the wooden cutting board as he narrowed his eyes.
"That wasn't an answer to my question Doctor."
Placing one of the cups on the cutting board inches from Will's fingers, Hannibal straightened his spine and rose up to his full six footed height.
"A monster I may be diagnosed as when the time comes, but as a flesh and bloodied man, finding…someone who is very similar…" Throwing his eyes up onto Hannibal's face, Will scoffed as he ignored the cup in front of him.
"You want someone around who can kill as freely as you do? Deep down, Oliveah is not that person. She's going to be a mother, and she'll choose that over being your killing partner. Mark my words Hannibal."
Sucking in a deep breath as he tried in vain to not let slip any angry emotion to cross his features, Hannibal leaned over the island to let his forearms rest against the marble of the counter top.
"I believe Will, that the last time we had a conversation that went down this similar road, it ended with my knife at your neck and Oliveah is not here to stop me from dragging the blade completely across your throat" he growled, staring intensely into Will's eyes as the younger man picked up on the quiet ringtone that sounded like Goldberg's Variations.
"That's not my phone."
Taking a step backwards from the island, the Doctor reached into his black pant pocket and withdrew his Blackberry catching sight of Oliveah's name.
"Speak of the Devil. Good evening Oliveah…" Focusing in on the young woman's breathing on the other end of the line, Hannibal listened as she started to slowly speak.
"I am sitting in the backseat of a black BMW 5 Series Sedan driven by a man who works for Mason Verger. I think…he is driving us to the Verger Estate."
Tightening his fingers around the device as he pressed it tightly against his ear, Hannibal brought his free hand up and quickly snapped his fingers to attract Will's attention.
"Can you look out a window Oliveah? Tell me what you see?" Hannibal questioned as he moved towards the butcher block. Taking out every single knife, he dropped them onto the island in a clatter as Oliveah felt a chill running down her spine with the sound.
"Trees. We are heading to the Verger Estate. Mason…is expecting all of us."
Hearing the line go dead as he pulled the phone away from his ear, Hannibal roughly shoved it back into his pocket as Will stood as still as stone.
"Where is she?"
Hearing Will's voice as he cleared his throat, Hannibal roughly grabbed the white hand towel from the stove and wrapped it around the sharp blades of the stainless-steel knives. Turning around as he spotted his keys on the counter, he snatched them up into the pam of his hand before turning towards Will.
"Verger."
…
Muskrat Farm, Verger Estate, 1400 Greenspring Valley Road, Stevenson, Maryland…
Staring out her window as she heard the driver's side door slam shut, Oliveah continued to stare up at the large house as her own door opened.
"Miss Adler,"
Feeling the man's presence directly behind her as she walked up the concreate pathway, Oliveah kept her hands in her jacket pockets as her fingers kept a hold on her mobile phone.
"Welcome Oliveah, welcome. I hope Antonio here didn't frighten you at all."
Moving her eyes up and onto the wide smiling face of Mason Verger, she immediately felt the built up of anger and disgust as he folded his hands together over his chest.
I will not kill Mason Verger without you at my side
I promise, that I will not seek Mason out on my way to or back from New York City
I will return, before midnight
Halting on the top stone step, she felt Antonio's hulking presence directly behind her as she turned her head slightly.
"Antonio, stop crowding Miss Adler. Oliveah, please won't you come inside for a drink?"
Keeping her hands shoved in her pockets, she sighed deeply as Mason smoothed a hand through his unkempt blond hair.
"I don't really have a choice now, do I Mister Verger?"
Folding his hands behind his back as he heard her words, the Verger heir narrowed his eyes as he turned towards the looming house.
"No."
…
Twenty minutes later…
Taking the chair that was offered to her, Oliveah sat still on the edge of the fabric seat as a glass of white wine was brought before her eyes.
"Would it surprise you to know that I am branching out into wine to accompany the meat of my pigs?"
"You'll forgive me if I decline…that" she sneered, angling her eyes as Mason held the glass close to his chest.
"Interesting, and I don't blame you for declining a drink from a stranger. Though we are not technically complete strangers my dear. Andrew told me a lot about you before he…" Closing his mouth as he rolled his eyes back to display the whites, Oliveah sucked in a deep breath as she clenched her fists.
Hannibal will be here
He is coming for you Mason
Leaning forward as he held out the wine glass, Mason allowed the glass to fall from his fingers, smashing sharply onto the floor at Oliveah's feet as she moved her shoes out of the way.
"You look like you want to slug me Miss Adler."
"That's not all I want to do to you Mister Verger" she challenged back as Mason started to laugh.
"God, what a firecracker you are. I am truly jealous that Doctor Lecter has you all to himself. Would you ever be interested in changing teams?"
Jumping up onto her feet as she threw a closed fist out, Oliveah screamed as her fingers made contact with the flesh of Mason's face before she threw out a second blow. Feeling strong arms slamming down around her shoulders, she felt herself being pulled away as Mason brought his hands up, cupping them around his broken nose and dripping blood. Narrowing his eyes on Oliveah's face as she seethed with uncontrollable anger, he watched as Antonio brought a strong fist up into her stomach as her eyes went wide before falling onto her knees.
"Now…NOW ANTONIO! WE DO NOT HIT A LADY EVEN IF SHE DESERVES IT!"
Marching over to Oliveah breathing heavily, he reached a hand down and tightly grabbed her wrist before noticing the puckering of skin. Narrowing his eyes as he pushed up the fabric of her sweater slightly with his thumb, he felt his lips twitching into a smile.
"Did you try to kill yourself before or after you found out that you are expecting a little baby bastard?" he growled, hauling the young woman up and onto her feet.
…
Fifty minutes later…
Shutting the lights off of the BMW as the vehicle rounded the dark country road that would lead to the gates of the Verger Estate, Hannibal felt his fingers tightening around the leather of the steering wheel as he tucked his chin into his chest with a low animalistic growl.
Shifting his eyes onto the Doctor's half hidden profile, Will felt the blood running cold in his veins as he caught sight of Hannibal's bared teeth.
Hannibal is going to kill Mason Verger
Swallowing awkwardly to moisten his dry throat and lips, Will stared out the windshield as his eyes caught sight of soft lighting in the far distance.
And, he's going to eat pieces of him raw
"Mason Verger was responsible for the death of Oliveah's friend on Clinton Street. She has assured me that she will be the one to kill him. I will merely be providing guidance and assurance."
Nearly doing a double take as he turned his head and stared open mouthed at the calm Doctor, Will scoffed as the vehicle slowed to park on a section of empty road surrounded by trees.
"You speak of this so casually Hannibal like a teacher to a student. You are making her kill!" he spat, catching Lecter's eye as he unfastened his seat belt and took up his dark leather medical bag filled with knives.
"You are entirely wrong William. Oliveah desires to kill."
…
"Wake up now expected mommy….wakey wakey….."
Feeling cool fingertips against the smoothness of her chin, Oliveah kept her eyes closed as she rolled over slightly, bringing a hand up against her sore stomach.
"I'm going to kill you."
Smiling widely as she coughed out the words, Mason adjusted himself as he laid stretched out beside her on the queen-sized guest bed.
"Well that's not a very nice thing to say when I have a very…very important proposition for you Miss Adler" he spoke as he shifted his arm from beneath the pillow that was propping up his head.
Slowly opening her eyes, Oliveah stared at the bandage that covered the man's nose as she caught movement from the dark corner of the large bedroom.
"Just one question though before we discuss business. Whose baby are you carrying? The Doctor's? or the young floppy haired FBI Instructor's?"
"Fuck you Mason,"
I never slept with Will
"As much as I was expecting some drama, you are very vanilla. I'm sure your little bastard will have the Doctor's dark eyes and your creamy skin. Unless you accept my offer?"
Rolling off the edge of the bed, she knew another pair of eyes were watching her other than Mason's as she stood up on shaky legs. Moving a hand onto her stomach, she absentmindedly rubbed her small bump as Mason propped himself up on the bed.
"You know that Hannibal is coming Mason. He'll be coming for me, and he'll be coming for you" she growled, throwing her eyes towards the darkened window.
"Oh, I know he is coming, and I can't wait."
What the hell does that mean?
"So, let's chat then. I am very interested in you Miss Adler. Not just by your looks, but by your body. More so, that I want to offer you the privilege to carry my child. My little Verger Heir. You'd be its mother of course with all that is owed, but it would be mine. Needless to say, I'd like this done sooner rather than later, so you'd have to lose the little bastard that is currently occupying your womb…"
Feeling her stomach turning with his every word, Oliveah simply stared at the stretched-out man as Antonio stepped forward from the shadows.
"You stay the fuck away from me Mason Verger."
Hearing Oliveah's growl as he swung his legs over the side of the bed, Mason ran a hand through his messy hair before snapping his fingers for Antonio.
"Bring her over to me,"
Flexing the fingers of both her hands as she watched the man who had earlier brought her to the house walking with determined strides towards her, Oliveah felt the sharpness of the scalpel blade against the skin of her wrist as she threw her hand out, slashing open the side of the man's face deeply before she turned around for the door. Letting out a painful scream as she felt Mason slamming her violently against the closed bedroom door, Oliveah felt the scalpel falling from her fingers as Mason's lips spoke against her ear.
"You want something done? You have to do it yourself" he sneered, bringing up the edge of his thumb against the corner of her eye to catch her tear.
…
"That was Oliveah, I'm sure of it."
Hearing Will's concern as he too heard the sharp scream, Hannibal quickly pulled out two butcher knives before shoving the clothed bundle against Will's chest.
Feeling the warmth of the late evening night circling around his face, Hannibal stared up at the looming house through the trees as he tasted the air with his lips. Reaching into his pocket, he pulled out his Blackberry and selected the number of a former patient that more than likely, was somewhere inside the very house.
"Good evening Margot. I was hoping we could have a quick chat…"
Tucking his phone back into his pocket as Will listened for any more screams in the night, Hannibal angled his eyes as he caught movement in the distance. Pointing a single finger towards the small clearing between the trees, both men watched as three dark clothed individuals rounded the corner of the brick house, disappearing into the night. Feeling his lips twitching into a small smile, Hannibal began to stalk towards the house with Will trailing behind, pulling out his standard issued firearm as the Doctor flashed the blade of one of the knives against the moonlight.
Walking up the stone steps towards the double front doors, Hannibal watched as they both opened widely with Margot Verger stepping back to a safe distance.
"I don't approve of what my brother wants to do with Oliveah Adler" she lied, as Hannibal brought the blade of one knife up against his chest.
"Lie to me all you want Margot. Tonight, I'm not here for you. I only needed you to open the door" Lecter growled as Margot threw her eyes onto Will's face.
"You promised, that you would let me leave…" she sputtered, hearing Hannibal letting out a quiet sigh as he raised his dark eyes up towards the ceiling of the next floor.
"I always keep my promises Margot. I will allow you to leave…tonight."
Taking a further step backwards, Margot nodded her head as she turned quickly on her heel, leaving the open area foyer just as a man dressed all in black came around the corner. Letting out a snarl as he hurled one of the butcher knives, Lecter smiled as it struck deep into the hired goon's chest, causing him to spit out a mouthful of blood before falling hard onto the marble floor.
"Hand me another knife Will."
…
Gritting her teeth as she felt the strength of Antonio's fingers pressing down painfully on her forearms, Oliveah winced as she closed her eyes tightly, feeling the sharp blade of her own scalpel being dragged down the puckered skin of her left wrist re-opening the slit as her blood dripping down onto the bed sheet.
"Grab the cup Antonio."
Feeling the scalpel being dragged along her right wrist, Oliveah let out a string of curses before a long drawn out scream escaped from her throat.
"You are going to take part in my plan Miss Adler. After we bleed you a bit, you'll be going under a much sharper scalpel down there" Mason smiled as he looked down to the protruding bump before grazing his fingertips against the skin.
Hannibal…please get here quick….
Closing her eyes as her wrists felt wet with her own blood, Oliveah sucked in a quick breath as she felt a slight movement in her lower abdomen.
It moved
You moved!
"HANNIBAL!"
Letting out a sharp scream as she tried to twist away from the men, Oliveah felt a few drops of her own blood against her forehead just as the bedroom door was kicked open slamming hard against the wall as Hannibal narrowed his eyes on the scene before him.
"Step back Mason." Raising the muzzle of his gun to point squarely on the face of Mason Verger, Will angled his body as he locked eyes with Antonio, bent over Oliveah's face.
"Gentleman! I'm…somewhat surprised to see you both, standing on unbroken legs and not in chains" Verger sneered as he held up Oliveah's bloody scalpel.
Holding up his last remaining knife, Hannibal tapped the tip of the blade against his bloody chin as he breathed in deeply. Walking slowly towards the bed, he angled the blade against his thigh as he watched Antonio quickly straightened up to stand, just as a single gun shot rang out, echoing off the walls of the bedroom. Smiling at the heavy fall of the overweight man onto the floorboards, Hannibal threw a bloody hand out and tightened his grip around Mason's throat as the young man started to laugh uncontrollably while gulping for air.
"Am I a dead man Doctor Lecter?"
Moving his eyes onto Oliveah's still body laying on the bed, Hannibal plunged the blade of the knife straight into Mason's gut as the man's eyes went wide.
"I'm not going to kill you Mason, but I can't have you trying to run away" Hannibal added as he pushed Mason away, ignoring him falling to the floor clutching the knife handle. Standing at the side of the bed, his eyes noted the amount of blood staining the sheets as he brought his fingers up against Oliveah's cheek.
Hearing her slight moan with his touch, Lecter took a hold of the white bedsheet and tore it cleanly into two strips as he bandaged her wrists.
"Oliveah…Oliveah…"
Hearing her name as she slowly opened her eyes, she felt Lecter's hand cupping her cheek as she immediately tried to lower a hand down to touch her stomach.
"Your wrists are bleeding. Sit up."
Feeling Hannibal's arm around her shoulders as he sat her up, Oliveah blinked her eyes to clear the fog as she caught sight of Will aiming his gun at a slumped over man.
"You…fucker…"
"We have all night Oliveah" Lecter began as she swung her legs over the side of the bed.
"Oliveah…"
"This, is not your kill Hannibal. Or yours Will" she spoke, feeling the Doctor's hand on the small of her back as she rose onto her feet.
Coughing up a mouthful of blood as he wiped the back of his hand against his lips, Mason chuckled as he stared up at Oliveah before catching sight of his sister standing just outside the bedroom door holding two suitcases.
"Where, are you going little sister?" he sputtered, narrowing his eyes as Margot stood frozen, staring at Oliveah.
Turning her eyes towards the door, Oliveah caught Margot's eyes as Will holstered his gun on his hip. Feeling Hannibal coming to stand up beside her, she continued to stare into the young woman's eyes as Mason spat out another mouthful of blood on the floor.
"Fuck you, you little COWARD! RUN THEN!" he screamed towards Margot as Hannibal brought his boot down hard on Mason's leg, splitting the tibia bone.
Watching her brother crying out in pain as Hannibal held out a knife towards Oliveah, he caught Margot's eye before giving a slight nod.
"Thank you," she whispered, turning quickly from the door with her bags. Hearing the woman bounding down the staircase to escape the house and to place enough distance between herself and the cannibal, Oliveah ignored Will's steady gaze as she returned her attentions to the man sitting crippled on the floor.
"Mark my words, I will feed each and every one of you to my pigs. But you Oliveah….you especially I will take my time with and degrade in every possible way. Every last inch of your body I will run past my teeth…"
Feeling Hannibal's arm roughly brushing past her shoulder, she watched as he grabbed the front of Mason's shirt and hauled him up to his one good knee. Catching Will moving to Mason's other side, she watched as both men kept a firm grip on Verger's shoulders as she stepped up in front of him, staring directly into his eyes.
Wincing from the pain of Hannibal's fingernails digging into the soft skin of his shoulder, Mason growled as he bared his teeth at the young woman.
"And that little bastard growing inside of you…"
Steadying her breath as she watched Hannibal lean down, she listened to Mason's blood curdling scream as the Doctor ripped off the bottom lobe of his left ear with his own teeth.
You deserve everything that is happening to you right now Mason
Watching Mason trying to pull away as Oliveah stepped up to him with her fingers outstretched, he snapped his teeth as she brought the soft pads of her thumbs to rest on the sides of his temples.
"Turn around Will, you are not a killer" she whispered, hearing him shuffle closer towards her as he laid a strong hand on her shoulder.
"Don't do this Oliveah. The police will arrest him…"
He threatened the life of my child
"You'll regret it if you kill him."
"Regret? I regret nothing. Andrew on the other hand, had no chance" she spat, pressing her thumbs harder against Mason's temples as he spit directly on the fabric of her shirt that covered her stomach. Ignoring the pain in both her wrists as she noticed the blood soaking through the quickly fastened bedsheets, Oliveah winced as she felt Hannibal's breath against her ear.
"You want to this Oliveah."
The Devil on one side and an Angel on the other
But Andrew deserves justice
"You won't get the chance to enjoy me Mason, not without your sight" she spoke calmly, bringing her fingers down over his eyes as she started to apply pressure. Pressing down harder and harder as she felt the softness of his eyes giving way, Oliveah felt her lips twitching into a dark smile as Mason's screams overtook the bedroom. Watching the blood pouring out from his dark sockets and onto her fingers, she released her hold as Mason withered on the floorboards at her feet.
Leaning forward, Hannibal reached out and dragged his index finger along Mason's cheek before bringing his finger into his mouth, tasting Verger's blood as Will's voice screamed out.
"Oliveah…OLIVEAH!"
Moving her blank eyes up onto Will's face, she looked down and saw his hands gripping hers as he ignored Mason's blood. Bringing a bloody hand up to cup her cheek, Hannibal calmly walked behind Mason and with a strong hold, snapped his spine out of place as the young man went limp. Letting Mason fall from his arms, Lecter narrowed his eyes on the scene before him as he stepped over Mason's limp legs.
"Time to go home Oliveah."
…
Eleven Hours Later…
Removing his black fedora hat as he stepped over the front door threshold, Jack Crawford nodded his head towards the middle-aged nurse as he moved his eyes to stare at the ceiling.
It's very cold in this house
Following the nurse up the winding staircase to the second floor, Crawford moved his eyes onto a piece of wooden banister that had sustained significant damage before he paused on the top stair landing.
"Was this where Mister Verger was found?"
Folding her hands behind her back, the nurse shook her head as she took a step backwards towards the closed double doors of the master bedroom.
"That was his previous nurse who found him. I only started three hours ago."
"I see."
Pushing open the double doors, Crawford picked up on the beeping of a monitor from a far corner and as he rounded a solid white heavy-duty curtain, he held his breath as his eyes settled on the still body sitting up in bed.
"Good evening Mister Verger,"
Angling his head towards the sound of Crawford's voice, Mason licked his dry lips as he moved his thumb along the measure device of the IV.
"Excuse me while I give myself a little more morphine Agent Crawford" Mason grinned as Jack took out a notebook and pen from the inside of his jacket.
"I saw the damaged banister…"
"Just an act of clumsiness Agent Crawford. You know how it is, you carry something extremely heavy and the dog runs under your feet" he chuckled, bringing his only responding arm up to adjust the underside of the bloody bandage that covered his empty eye sockets.
"You don't own a dog Mister Verger."
"Would you care for a drink? The Verger brand has entered the vino business…"
"I've read the police report from earlier, and there are a lot of holes that need to be sorted out. Starting with what caused you to fall down the stairs and paralyze your spine?"
"That damn dog again Agent Crawford. Margot has grown rather attached to the little thing I could hardly ask her to give it the boot on account of my condition."
Gritting his teeth together as he left the lines of the notebook blank, Jack sucked in a deep breath as he moved to stand on the other side of the bed.
"I'd like to speak with Margot, if you'd please."
"Sorry Jack, Margot has decided that Europe has been calling her name for quite some time. She left last night."
"Right, I'm not going to get any answers from you tonight am I Mister Verger?" Jack spat as Mason angled his head towards the other side of the room to focus on the Federal Agents voice.
"There's not really much to tell. I fell down the stairs, and the glass from the new Verger wine bottles impaled my eyes" shrugging his shoulders as he offered the simple explanation, he smiled as he heard Crawford bid a muttered farewell before the bedroom went silent.
"Cordell?"
Hearing light footsteps stepping up to the bed from the right side of the room, Mason reached up and pulled at the bandages that securely covered his eyes.
"Take these off,"
Feeling his assistant's fingers unfastening the bloody fabric, Mason growled as he felt the incredible sting of the room's air against his skin.
"Make sure it's cashmere Cordell," he muttered as soft fabric covered his black, eyeless sockets.
"I want Hannibal Lecter."
"I want Will Graham."
"And I want their LITTLE FUCKING GIRLFRIEND!"
Smiling as Mason's screams echoed off the walls of the bedroom, Cordell nodded his head in agreement as he finished tying the cashmere mask securely around Mason's lifeless eyes.
