Selfless Love

Chapter 49: Truth

Two weeks have passed since Theo came home, he is six weeks old. Amar has allowed me to have extra time off work since he was born early, but Tobias had to go back last week.

Theo's collar bone still hasn't healed but it should within the next two weeks.

Right now Theo is sleeping, Tobias is at work and Christina and I are in my living room, watching a film.

"So, do you know when you and Four are going to get married?" She asks.

"Nope, but we want it to be soon."

"Can I plan it? I've been meaning to ask you that since you announced it."

"Sure. But I'll have to see if he is okay with that."

Theo starts crying and I jump up to go and see if he's okay.

I enter his bedroom and see that no one is in here with him. I pick him up out of his cot and hold him close to me, being careful of his shoulder.

"Hey baby, what's the matter? You hungry?"

I walk with him to the kitchen and take a bottle out of the fridge. I heat it up and test if it's all right. I grab a cloth and take him to the living room, sitting on the sofa, placing the cloth on my shoulder and I feed him.

"Tris, what's going on?" Christina questions me.

"What do you mean?"

"I know something's going on. Ever since Theo was born you've been terrified of something happening to him. So has Four. I know he's a new born and he was born early, but I know there's something bigger going on. In fact, you've been acting weird since you got back from Amity, both of you. But when Theo cries you and Four jump up and run to him. What's going on? Did something happen in Amity that we don't know about?"

I feel a tear slide down my cheek as I continue to look at my son and not Christina.

"Tris, you know you can tell me anything, right?"

I nod and another tear falls down my cheek.

"Tris, please tell me."

"When we were in Amity, after you called about some of the factionless and Andrew coming for us, we heard gunshots. Then we heard a knock on the door, Johanna said it was her so my mum opened it and it was Andrew with some factionless, holding Johanna. My mum was shot and he held us hostage. He wrote us a note saying that one of us was going to die and we spent a while debating who it was going to be because we knew Andrew would just kill anyone if one of us didn't stand against the wall. It was Johanna but I couldn't handle it. When he came and shot her I got up to help her but he shot me, in the side of my stomach." Christina gasps. "I woke up in the hospital in Amity… My mum, Hana and Tobias were asleep but I could tell they had been crying… I squeezed Tobias' hand to wake him up… I asked if our baby was okay and he stiffened… I asked again and he told me I was really pregnant with twins… we didn't know because Theo was in front of her… she was smaller than him as well, which is why I didn't look like I was having twins… she was against my back… they weren't identical so they were in different eggs… when I was shot the bullet went through my uterus then into her egg, and it hit her… she died and they had to do a C-section to get her out… our daughter died and we didn't even know about her. That's why we're terrified that something is going to happen to Theo, because we don't want to lose another child."

I am full on crying by the end of telling her but she had to know the truth, and I have finished feeding Theo, I am now burping him.

"Tris, I'm so sorry. You didn't deserve to go through that."

She wraps me in her arms, being careful with Theo, and I cry into her shoulder.

I hear the door open and turn to see Tobias. I look at the clock and see that it is lunch time.

"What's going on in here?" He asks.

"Tris just told me about what happened in Amity. I'm sorry." Christina says.

Tobias' eyes fill with tears immediately.

"I'm going to go and meet Will for lunch, I'll be back later, Tris." I nod and Chris leaves.

Tobias comes over to Theo and I straight away and wraps us in his arms.

"I'm sorry. She wanted to know why we were terrified of losing Theo and apparently we've been acting weird since we came back from Amity, so I had to tell her." I apologise.

"You don't have to be sorry, Tris. They have to know at some point." I know he's crying by the roughness in his voice, and his sniffles. "Are you hungry? I'll make you something to eat."

"Right now I just want you to hold us." I admit.

"I can do that. I love you, Tris, and you Theo." He kisses mine and Theo's heads.

"We love you, too."

And we continue crying like that for a while.
