Three Years Later

Rose Mazur

"Am I an aunt yet…again?" I quirked an eye brow in thought at my statement as I poked my head in the room.

"Not yet," Clara groaned, sweaty and swollen but still beautiful. "I want this baby out!" She groaned again as Ben reached over and stroked his wife's forehead.

"I know, darling. Soon-"

"You don't know that! Not even the bloody doctor knows yet! Shite!" Clara yelped as she started heavily panting, Ben immediately holding her closer and whispering words of support.

My heart warmed at the sight. My own stomach gave a weird tingle.

"I'll leave you two to it," I nodded, eager to get out of the room as Ben shot me a quick smile.

I walked out and back to the waiting room, where everywhere else was waiting.

"How is she?" Lev asked from his seat, still hugging the teddy bear that he bought, which was as big as him.

"Are we aunts and uncles?" Josh added.

"Not yet, and to be honest I think Ben is suffering more than Clara," I answered honestly as everyone else chuckled.

"Can you believe it guys? A year ago we were all here for Leigha and Chuck's baby and now we're waiting for Ben's," Dianna beamed.

"Shit, we're all getting old!" Denis cried dramatically as we all burst into laughter.

"I bet one of you guys is next to climb aboard the baby train," Lev eyed me and Artur, grinning in glee as Artur sputtered and I rolled my eyes.

"Wha-what?"

"Oh yes. I can see it now," Isabelle laughed. "Either we'll be watching Artur freak out about Ana being in labor or Rose demand Dimitri go bring her doughnuts in between contractions."

"Excuse you," I sniffed. "I know my husband, and I know that he has enough sense to already have the doughnuts in the room before the contractions start."

Everyone busted up laughing at that as I flipped my hair smugly. After that we lapsed in to a comfortable chatter as we waited for any news from the expectant parents.

The years that followed the Great Battle were full of progress, but it was also a learning process. From learning how to maintain and share information with Court, to collaborating with them to fight the still looming Strigoi threat, it was a couple years full of development and change. Positive changes could be found on the professional and personal level. Over the years, we had seen marriages and promotions, relationships form to grow our little family; and now we were starting another chapter…with little beings.

Damn…we really had gotten old.

A stirring in my stomach brought me to my feet.

"I'm just gonna head to the bathroom," I excused myself from the room, breaking into a run as soon as I was out of the sight of my friends.

Practically tearing down the door, I made it into a stall just in time to empty my dinner in to the toilet.

Lovely.

"I feel like you're getting worse, not better, Roza."

I flushed the toilet quickly and exited the stall.

"You're not supposed to be in here," I groaned as I looked up at my husband for the past two years. "Did you just get off work?"

"I'm supposed to be where my wife is," Dimitri replied sweetly, his eyes lighting up as they rested on my still flat stomach, handing me a bottle of water, "my pregnant wife. And yes, though when I arrived it was slightly worrying to hear Leigha inform me you went to the bathroom, knowing how sick you've been lately."

"Didn't the doctor say the first trimester is the worse for nausea? I'm bound to get better, Comrade. Don't worry," I patted his chest affectionately before rinsing my mouth out with the water.

"How can I not worry?" He frowned, placing a kiss on my temple.

"You're too kind," I sighed. "You're gonna make an amazing daddy."

"And you'll make an amazing mommy, Roza, I can feel it. Have you told the team yet?"

I shook my head. "I'm thinking of telling them after we get back from vacation. Right now it's Ben and Clara's moment and I don't want to ruin it for them."

Dimitri smiled at me, about to reply with the door burst open to reveal Isabelle. "Rose! What's taking you-"

She stopped short as she spotted my husband. "Gross you two. I know we're in a hospital so shit should be sterile, but the bathroom is not where you should be sneaking off to for a little bump and grind. Save it for when you get home."

Dimitri and I looked at each other, then back at Isabelle.

And then we burst into laughter.

Isabelle rolled her eyes. "Married couples. You guys are a weird breed."

"He's so cute!" Viktoria practically screeched as she gazed upon the picture of little Ryder Anthony Noble.

"Vika, a little quieter please? Before you blow out my wife's eardrum?" Dimitri teased his sister, grinning as she stuck her tongue out at him.

Olena entered the room, a tray full of blini in her hands. "You've been back for not even an hour and you've managed to get your sister all riled up, Dima," she clucked, amused.

"It's a talent," Karolina joked as she also entered the living room with tea. "How was the flight?"

"Pretty uneventful," I shrugged, snuggling back into Dimitri's arms.

"A bit tired though," he added, looking at me thoughtfully.

"Of course, we got in late. Well we can chat more tomorrow. Why don't you two eat up and then you can wash up and rest?"

"Thank you, Olena," I practically beamed at the angel what was my mother in law, already reaching for the blini.

"Mama, look at Rose's godson!" Vika practically shoved the phone toward her mother. "He's so small and chubby and cute! Oh, I can't wait for another little baby to play with!" She punctuated that statement with a meaningful look toward me and Dimitri.

"That's because you didn't have to stay up and change the baby," Sonya rolled her eyes as she came down the stairs from putting the children to sleep. Our flight got in in the late evening, so by the time we had managed to arrive in Baia, it was well past Zoya and Katya's bedtime. Though I was sure I would be able to see their darling faces first thing in the morning tomorrow.

"Or get spit up on."

"Or wrestle a baby into a diaper."

"Or dodge flying food."

Damn, sounded like I had a lot to look forward to.

Vika crinkled her nose. "Well of course, I'm the auntie. I just have to cuddle and spoil them! Gah, I want another niece or nephew so bad!"

"And another one you shall get. And soon." Yeva suddenly appeared from nowhere, crossing the living room before heading up the stairs to god knows where.

Wait a minute.

"Damn it, you crazy old bat!" I yelled over the squeals of my sister-in-laws as Dimitri simpky chuckled.

"Oh my God, Roza! Is it true? You're pregnant?" Sonya grinned as she looked at my still flat stomach.

"Yes," I rolled my eyes. "We were going to tell you all tomorrow, but someone had other plans!" That last part was yelled up the stairs.

I think if I strained hard enough I could hear Yeva laughing.

Crazy Old Bat.

"More grandbabies," Olena clapped as she came over to give me a fierce hug.

"I want a niece!" Vika gasped.

"Uh, I think Paul's feeling a bit overwhelmed with all the girls…" Karolina tried to interject.

"Oh who cares what he thinks?" Sonya rolled her eyes. "We could go buy more little dresses!"

"And dolls!"

"And little hair bows!"

"And those little shoes!"

"Ooh! Zoya and Katya are going to be so excited!"

"I know, they can all have little tea parties together!"

"And do one another's hair!"

"Oh and trade dolls-"

"You would think it was their baby," Dimitri muttered as he stared up at his sisters.

"Couldn't sleep, dear?"

I turned from looking at the pre-dusk sky, smiling at my mother in law as she made her way to the little bench on the porch where I currently sat.

"Just thinking."

"About the baby?" She smiled gently as she wrapped a blanket around both of us.

"Thank you," I said as I wrapped the soft fabric around my shoulders. "Yes."

"Are you nervous, Roza? This is a new experience for you after all."

"A little bit, but I already know Dimitri will be a great dad. He's already so excited, and helpful." I smiled as I thought about my wonderful husband.

"And you will be a great mother, Roza. I can feel it; this baby is incredibly lucky to have you both as parents."

I chewed on my lip as the reoccurring thought – the thought that had been running through my mind ever since that life-changing stick blinked Pregnant back up at me.

"Roza?" Olena looked at me questioningly, but didn't push me.

"It's just…" I sighed deeply. "What if I'm a terrible mother? What if the baby hates me?"

"Oh Roza. Dear, what is bringing these thoughts to your mind?" Olena looked sympathetic as she reached out to stroke my hair.

"I've never really seen myself as being really…motherly, like you. And I held onto a lot of resentment toward my mom for so many years, hating how she abandoned me. I guess I've just never thought I'd be a mom, and now that I'm about to be one I just don't know what to do to make sure this baby will be happy…happy with having me as his or her mom."

"Oh Roza," Olena smiled. "You don't have to doing anything special. This baby will take one look at you, and you'll take one look at the little one, and you'll both fall in love. Despite what you might think, you are a very loving and warm person, Roza. You love your friends and family unconditionally, I can tell. You have a very large heart, and just look at your nieces and nephews. They adore their Aunt Rose."

"But I'm not perfect, far from it," I laughed quietly. Understatement of the century. "I'm messy and I can be impatient and-"

"Being a mother isn't about being perfect. Nobody's perfect, especially mothers," Olena chuckled. "Being a mother is about loving your children unconditionally, and being open to receive the love that they return to you. I know that you have had your problems with your mother, but I also know that you to have managed to put aside the past, make up with her and look toward the future. Approach motherhood the same way, Roza. Look toward the future dear, it's a new chapter, a new beginning. And have faith that you'll give this child and any future children the love and attention that you did not have when you were a child."

I stared at the dusty pink sky as I contemplated Olena's words, smiling as the unease in my stomach lessened. I felt just a tad bit more confident that I wouldn't fuck this up.

"Thank you, Olena."

"You're very welcome dear. Now, would you like to help me make some black bread?"

"I'd like nothing more."

"What the bloody fuck," Ben gaped as he caught sight of me entering our common room.

"Hello partner and good morning to you too?" I smirked as I placed my hand protectively of the small bump.

"You…you're- that…holy shit you're pregnant." Ben finally got out as his eyes zoned in on my slight bump.

"Yes, 14 weeks," I responded as clocked in. "Or as normal people would say, three and a half months."

"When did you find out?"

"When I was 8 weeks," I replied nonchalantly.

I could see him doing the mental math.

"Wait, that means you've known from before you went away. You've known since Clara gave birth!" Ben looked at me accusatorily. "Why didn't you say anything?"

"Because the doctor said at 8 weeks it's still a risky place, we didn't want to announce anything prematurely. Besides, it was yours and Clara's time to celebrate. I didn't want to intrude on that."

Ben's expression when from accusatory to knowing and finally to understanding as a soft smile lit up his face.

"You didn't have to do that, Rose."

"Well we did anyways. But know that it'll be harder for me to hide we can totally make it the Rose Maur Belikova Show if you want it to be. I'll be totally fine with that," I smirked as Ben rolled his eyes.

"But you've taken yourself off field work? Raids and all that?" He looked concerned now.

"Yeah, I talked to Heidi about it. She says I can pretty much do everything except no more field work and simulations, but I can still watch over the classes and help run sims. I can also guard Christian, but that'll ultimately be up to him. Oh and I can help with technical aspects when you guys are out on raids. And then at the last trimester I'm officially on maternity leave until after the baby is born."

"Can't you get up to six months of maternity leave?"

"Up to six months but I can come back after six weeks if I want," I recited the words my boss had told me.

"Take as much time as you need," Ben encouraged, "we'll be fine."

"I doubt I'll be gone that long. I might go stir crazy," I responded, my stomach giving a weird lurch at the thought of staying at home with a newborn for half a year.

"It's your choice," he assured, "but just know we'll be taking care of things here while you're taking care of things at home."

"I know," I smiled. "Speaking of taking care of things…Dimitri and I have been talking about godparents."

"Oh?" Ben smirked. "Whoever have you thought about?"

"Oh we're still discussing. I mean we have a few contenders in mind…but we'll just have to see," I smiled sweetly at Ben, a smile which he mocked back.

"Did I hear Rose's lovely voice and- holy shit you've gotten fatter!" Lev's eyes widened as his voice carried.

"You're getting an unsatisfactory on your next evaluation," I rolled my eyes as Ben roared with laughter.

"Well, I mean – not fat, but you know…like…are you pregnant?!"

I did a mental facepalm as Lev all but yelled that last part.

And in 3, 2, 1…

The stampede could be heard as my team rushed into the room, practically falling over each other in the process.

"You will all get unsatisfactory unless you all stop staring now!" I glared.

They didn't stop staring.

"Oh," started Dianna.

"My," added Leiga.

"Angel," finished Isabelle.

"Another addition to the gang! Two in one year!"

"I'm going to be a godmother!" They screeched at the same time, pausing right after to glare at one another.

"Excuse you!"

"No, excuse you!"

"We all know I'm going to be the best godmother!"

"On what grounds? You barely like children and-"

"I like children just fine! Like when they're not dripping with goo or spitting or-"

"Look at them," Lev chuckled as all the guys watched the three of them fight.

"I know, so competitive."

"Good thing we all know who's going to be godfather," Jay laughed.

Oh dear God, please no.

"Me!" Jay, Lev, Denis, and Artur all glared at one another. And this was only half of the guys in our group given that Josh, Adrian, Christian, Danila, Eddie, and Abe's Three Musketeers weren't even present for this little powwow.

"You? You'd accidentally feed the poor kid alcohol!"

"That'd be Ivashkov, not me!"

"Excuse me! But I have children so I think that makes me most qualified!"

"But I'm more fun!"

"More like more stupid!"

"Not cool, man!"

I rolled my eyes as I toward my office, Ben practically crying as he laughed hysterically as he watched the guys debate who'd be the godfather.

"Well baby," I patted my small bump. "At least you'll have many aunts and uncles who'll love you lots and lots. Even if they are certifiably crazy."

And five months later, when I gave birth to Liliana Dimitriovna Belikova, in a room surrounded by giant stuffed animals, balloons and doughnuts, watching my friends and family fight over who could hold her first...

I realized I wouldn't want it any other way.

Yesterday was history. Tomorrow would be a mystery. But today, with my newborn baby in my arms, my husband at my side and our loved ones going crazy, was a gift.
