River stared at her stomach, unable to tear her gaze away from it as the little voice continued in her head.
Her child could talk to her and she could hear.
Shall I call you something else?
"No." River said aloud, before she realized her parents were still watching her.
"No? No what? River what's the matter? You look ill." Amy said.
"Nothing I'm fine, mum."
River stood quickly and walked down the hall, locking herself in the bathroom.
So...we can talk to each other?
River tested, wondering if she'd gone crazy or just hallucinated.
Yeah! Brilliant, innit! came the reply.
She stopped and let herself sink to the floor, head in her hands.
What a mess.
But...How? I mean, I'm not upset about it I'm just...trying to convince myself I'm not completely insane.
Well, I'd say it had everything to do with the fruit we got with gran. When you ate it, it killed you but the protection circuit keeping us safe reacted with it and now...
Woah. Wait, wait, wait. You mean the fruit did this?
In all probability, yes. The poison and the...
River didn't listen.
But that means the Tardis wanted this to happen. I'm supposed to be able to talk to you, but why?
Probably because now you've got a brilliantly clever kid who can help you fix everything.
Humble too... River smirked.
Then the thought occurred to her, Well, you call me mum, so what shall I call you?
There wasn't a reply.
Darling, you alright in there?
Yes mum.
Why won't you answer?
Well it's not really my choice to pick a name, is it?
River smiled sadly. She loved this child more than life itself and, now that she could hear it, that love was growing even more.
I think given the circumstances, you're in the perfect position to pick a name. Not a lot of kids can just tell their mum what they want to be called before they've been born.
But...
What is it?
I want you and dad to pick my name. I want it to mean something.
River's eyes filled with tears. It was a simple request but it was that it was coming from her baby that put her over the top.
Oh, darling...
Just call me...baby until daddy gets back and you two decide together.
Alright, baby.
You best get out of here, mum. Gran's coming.
River snapped out of her thoughts, sure enough she could hear her mother's feet coming down the hall. She jumped to her feet.
Oi! Easy, mum...Baby inside, remember?
Oh I'm sorry, love!
She wiped the tears out of her eyes and opened the door just as Amy was about to knock.
"River?"
"Mum?"
Amy hesitated.
"We need to talk."
Uh oh...Here it comes.
Here what comes? Are you in trouble?
Hush, now, darling. Mummy's got to take care of something.
The Doctor watched in amazement as the events of River's recovery unfolded right up until she began to act strangely and left the room.
"Well that's odd. I wonder what's wrong with her."
He began pacing, his thoughts began spinning, and the Doctor began fiddling yet again.
River and Amy were in the kitchen alone, drinking tea in silence. Rory had gone to market to get some groceries and the house was quiet.
"What was it you wanted to talk about?" River asked.
"Well, you've been acting oddly since you woke up. Is something the matter?"
"Of course something's the matter, mum." River said, trying to keep her emotions in check. "My husband is stuck in a temporal field and I'm getting closer and closer to having this baby. I just want him back."
The last sentence was practically a whisper as River looked down at her tea.
Amy didn't know what to say. Her daughter was scared and hurting. Her raggedy doctor was missing and they still didn't know quite how to get him back.
"We'll get him back, River. I promise."
River wasn't so sure.
Dad's coming back, right? He has to...right?
Yes, baby. He's coming back.
River forced her thoughts through, replacing all doubt. Now that the baby could hear them, she realized she had to be careful what she thought about.
"Mum, I need be alone with my thoughts for a bit." River said, slowly getting up. "I'll be in my room if there's a crisis but please just let me think for a while, yeah?"
Amy looked hesitant but nodded.
What are we going to do?
We're going to crack a message and save your father. How does that sound?
My first rescue mission! Yes!
River laughed out loud
This baby was definitely the Doctor's.
The Doctor was still tinkering under the console, trying to figure out what had happened to make River come back to life and why she would be acting so strangely.
He couldn't figure it out.
The Tardis alarms went off again and he raced up the stairs to the scanner, pulling out his screwdriver and turning on the sound.
River walked into the room alone and shut the door behind her.
She was laughing.
She pulled out her diary from under her pillow and flipped to a blank page, writing furiously, pausing every little bit to smile or rub her belly as she thought.
Oh how he loved her.
His hearts were racing.
"I need to get back there, old girl. I need to be with her, with them." the Doctor said to the Tardis.
River set down her pen and flipped back a few pages.
She was reading what she had written intently, as if nothing else mattered.
"What is she reading?" he wondered aloud.
The Tardis hummed as if to say, "Don't worry about it. Spoilers."
"Yeah, yeah. I know."
