Death Note
Chapter 54
The new morning's light was blocked by my curtains. I was sleeping soundly, until my cell phone rudely went off, disrupting whatever dreams I was having. I groaned and reached to my bedside table, feeling around for the rectangular shaped piece of technology. I gripped my phone in my hand and brought it to my ear while pressing the pick-up button.
"Hello?" I spoke with a weak and groggy voice.
"Hey buddy. Did I just wake you up?" Klaus spoke on the other line.
"No. I've been awake for hours," I replied sarcastically.
He chuckled.
"I called to ask if you wanted to hang out with me and Dylan today."
I propped myself up onto my elbows and looked at my digital clock. The numbers 10:13 were etched in an illuminating green.
"Yeah. Sure. Where?" I asked, rubbing the sleep out of my eyes.
"Um… we were thinking your place. Is that alright?"
I looked behind me for a sleeping, blue haired monkey. But she wasn't there.
I turned my attention back to Klaus on the other line. "Yeah that's fine."
"Cool, we'll be there in a few minutes," Klaus said and hung up the phone.
My arm dropped and my phone fell to the floor. I felt a little disappointed that Millie wasn't there, but relieved that I finally got a good night sleep without anybody jabbing their knee into my spine.
I got up, picked some clothes to wear, off my floor and got dressed. Then I quickly kicked all the rest of the dirty clothes into one corner of my room. I made my bed (though I left the pillows crooked) and brushed my hair and teeth. When I came back into my room, Millie was sitting on my bed.
"Where did you go?"
"To another world," she replied like she was being sarcastic.
"Maybe you could give me some kind of warning before vanish. That would be nice," I said while opening my window to let the summer breeze in.
"Why? Did you talk to yourself?"
"Almost," I responded.
The doorbell ring tore through our short conversation. I ran downstairs, leaving Millie in my room, to greet Dylan and Klaus. On my way down, I realized that there was no one home, which seemed kind of odd to me. I shrugged at the silence and proceeded to the door, but Dylan and Klaus have managed to enter in themselves.
"Hey, what's up, freaks?" I joked.
"Did you hear about a shit load of criminals getting wiped out yesterday?" Dylan asked.
My heart felt like it stopped beating for a moment.
That's right... I fucked up bad with the Death Note, I thought.
"The police are saying that Kira is back," he continued as we began climbing up the stairs, to my room.
"That's not good. Another Kira could start creating riots if people don't like him," I responded, trying not to think about my mistake. But it seems like it's going to be the star subject of the day.
"Why are these clowns here?" Millie asked as we walked into my room.
I ignored her and turned my focus towards my friends.
"I wonder how much damage this one is gonna cost us this time around," Klaus stated.
"Does it matter? If this Kira is going to clean up the city like the last one did, then I'm happy to have him around," Dylan stated.
I gave him a funny look. I was surprised to see that he liked Kira, and practically admired him. He never had an opinion on him 3 years ago.
"Why would you say that?" I asked as I sat on my bed, next to Millie.
"The last one killed my uncle. He was an abusive man towards his family and mine. It was only a few weeks after he got his ass hauled into prison and then bang, Kira killed him with a heart attack," Dylan explained.
"Geez, Dylan. Why haven't you told us this before?" Klaus asked as he sat on the floor and leaned against my bed.
"I didn't think I needed to. It didn't really matter," he said like he didn't care at all.
I hadn't really seen Dylan looked this enthusiastic before. It almost made my stomach turn. Thankfully Klaus changed the subject to summer vacation and what plans we would be making. About half way through the conversation, Millie reached her maximum of boredom and left by phasing though the wall. No matter how many times she did that, it always looked incredibly strange.
We chilled out and relaxed for an hour before I heard my mother come home. I went downstairs, with Dylan following behind me, while Klaus stayed in my room. Both Raven and Griffin shoved us aside to get to their room and play with some new video games they got while they were at the mall. They must have really begged my mom because she never buys them that kind of stuff. She always says that video games rot your brain out. It's usually my dad who is easy going about that subject.
Dylan and I made our way back up to my room to decide what to do next, instead of sitting and talking.
Klaus was standing awkwardly, in the corner of my room, next to my desk.
"Hey I have to go," he said.
"Already?" Dylan asked.
"Yeah. My mom made plans apparently, and didn't bother telling me until now."
"Thanks for having me over," he said as he patted my back and made his way down the stairs and out the door.
It seemed strange for Klaus to leave like that. Usually he would blow off plans anyone else made with him if he was hanging out with me and Dylan. I will have follow up on him later, online tonight to see what was up with him.
For the rest of the day, Dylan and I walked around a main street, popping in and out of stores and getting something to eat for lunch. By 3:00 pm, his sister called him and told him to come home. I couldn't hear her very well, on his cell, but her voice sounded annoyed and his responses had a bit of attitude in them.
I came home to find Millie watching my brothers wrestling outside, on the front lawn, trying to make each other eat dirt. Her arms were crossed and she had a grin on her face, like she found them mildly amusing.
"What are they fighting about this time?" I asked her quietly and I positioned myself next to her.
"Griffin is mad at Raven because he beat him in a video game. Then he challenged Raven for a real fight to see who the better twin is."
"Who is winning?"
"Who cares? They are beating each other up. That's enough for me," she said with a laugh.
I didn't respond, but rather stood next to her and watched them too.
Griffin was pinned down, his arms were free and he was trying to push him off. Once he was free, he pushed Raven down and shoved his face into the grass.
"I am the alpha twin!" He shouted out and laughed while his brother was spitting out little green bits.
"I'm going to see if Klaus is online," I said and turned my back on their scenario.
I didn't think Millie would follow me. She usually goes somewhere else when it comes down to me hanging out and talking with my friends.
We ran up to my room, being cautious of any pranks that my brothers had set up. Thankfully I was able to get by without any harm done to me.
I sat at my desk and opened my laptop while Millie grabbed one of the very few books on my shelf. She rested on my bed, lying on her stomach as she cracked the novel open.
Her and I are very different, I thought, looking back at her while my laptop was warming up. What kid wants to read at their own free will, when they have technology?
I looked down at my keyboard. She is invisible to everyone but me… wouldn't that be kinda lonely? I know that would bother me… I looked back at her.
"Hey Millie," I began.
"Hmm?" She sounded, not looking up from the book.
"Have you ever wondered about being human again?"
"What I wouldn't give," she said.
"Is it possible to become human again?"
Crap. What was I thinking? That could give her ideas and then we'd all be screwed if a mass murderer came back to life!
She looked up at me from the book.
"I don't know. I don't think I can," she answered and looked back down into the pages again. "I have a twit to look after anyway, so I don't really have enough time to figure that out."
Twit? Really? And you're practically immortal. You literally have all the time in the world, I thought- not speaking my answer.
"You don't have to look after me," I stated.
"You're a fuck-up. After last night's issue, I can't afford to leave you alone. Besides, you've got my book, so it's not like I can just give it to you. Who knows what you'll do with it."
My eye brows narrowed and I grew a little annoyed that she keeps calling me names. Fuck-up was probably the worst won she has called me so far.
My laptop finished booting up and all the programs I needed were ready to be used. I double clicked the video chat icon on the desk top. Once it opened, Klaus was already online and I decided to give him a call.
That's right, where is the Death Note? I should hide that in a secure place, I thought looking around my desk and in my drawers. I paused for a minute and sat up, still looking into the storage space. Nothing but scrap paper and pencils.
Grief struck me.
Oh no.
It was at that moment Klaus pick up the video call.
"Hey Trev. What's up?"
My eyes widened.
Oh no…
