I feel totally ashamed for how long it has taken me to write this chapter. Originally, it was going to be the last chapter, but I decided against it. There will probably only be one or two more chapters, which I will try to complete before the end of this weekend.

Chapter 45
(Haley's POV)
I walked into Emily's house with a small smile on my face. It felt good to know that Jacob and I were on the same page. I knew that there would be fights to come, but it appeared that the worst was over.
Jacob came in behind me and closed the door. He walked next to me, kissed my cheek then went in search of his other friends. I really appreciated the gesture. It proved that he had heard my words and was going to stay true to what he had promised.
I wandered around the house, looking for Stephanie when I rounded a corner and nearly tripped over someone sitting in the hallway. The form had a defeated hunch to his shoulders and was looking down at the ground. Upon closer inspection, I realized that it was Paul. Paul, the overconfident, rebellious person I had come to know, looked utterly broken.
"Paul?" I asked in confusion, forgetting for the moment that I was supposed to be mad at him for what he had done to Jacob.
His eyes whipped up and he stood faster than humanly possible, walking around me in three strides. He walked to the front door, opened it, then slammed it shut, the noise resounding through the house.
Without a thought, I ran after him. I bounded to the front door and pulled it open, noticing a chip in the wood from how forcefully Paul had closed it, then shut it myself.
I looked across the yard for any sign of Paul, but it seemed that he had disappeared. I sighed in resignation. I felt bad for how I had treated Paul, but Jacob was my imprint and Paul had hurt him. That had to give me justification to be mad for at least a little bit. Had Paul hurt me, Jacob probably would have killed him and all I was doing was not talking to him. That wasn't that bad.
As I was about to walk back into the house, I heard a howl from deep in the woods. It wasn't the kind of howl to show that there were vampires, but it was a howl full of pain and grief.
Once again throwing caution to the wind, I took off in the direction of Paul's howl. I pushed through the dense foliage, scraping my palms in the process, but I had to make things right. I was over being mad at him. It took too much energy and I really missed being friends with him.
"Paul!" I shouted into the never ending forest. I had not doubt that I would be lost in a matter of moments, but at this point Paul was too important to me.
"Paul!" I yelled, louder this time. I rolled my eyes and tilted my head back to look at the sky in my frustration, feeling that the only way to get him back over to me would be through the use of several insulting words and bad language.
"PAUL, YOU ASSHOLE, GET THE HELL OVER HERE BEFORE I GET JACOB TO ALPHA ORDER YOU BACK TO THE FRICKEN' HOUSE!" I screamed with all of my might, pulling all of my knowledge of cursing from Jake and the rest of the pack. In moments, I heard a large being crashing through the forest at an extremely fast rate. Before I could even blink, a large silver wolf burst from the cover of the trees, snarling at me in his anger. I could see that his teeth were shockingly white and sharp as they were bared at me. What could I say? I knew how to piss off wolves.
"Grrrrrr!" I growled back, although it was far less menacing than Paul. Paul seemed to think about something, then attempted to collect himself; however, his stance was still prepared for battle and his canines were still shown.
"I need to talk to you, Paul," I said in what I hoped was a calm voice, but I was pretty peeved from how he had threatened me. My comment caused Paul to growl, the sound building deep in his chest.
"Whatever!" I yelled, just about ready to burst, until I saw a tear roll down Paul's face. His eyes moved to look at the tear, as if it was something traitorous, then directed his gaze back on me.
"Paul," I nearly whispered, before he ran into the forest, away from me.

I pulled my phone from my pocket and dialed Jacob's number, hoping that he had it on him. Luckily, he picked up on the first ring.
"I listened to you earlier, Haley. Really, I did, but I'm kind of freaking out here. Where are you?" He asked, his voice slightly panicked.
"Umm, I'm somewhere in the woods. Can you find me, please?" I asked, not really nervous, but slightly uneasy about being in the forest by myself.
"You mean.. You're not with someone?" He asked right before the line went dead.
I turned in what I hoped was the direction of the house and started walking. It took maybe thirty seconds before Jake ran through the trees. He was going so fast that he nearly ran right by me, but as soon as he saw me, the worried look that marred his face was gone.
"Are you okay?" He asked me, walking closer to pull me into a hug.
"Yeah, but why did you hang up on me earlier?" I asked quietly.
He pulled away slightly and gave me a sheepish look.
"I kind of crushed it. Whoops," he said flippantly, giving me a half shrug.
"You crushed it?" I nearly choked out, my eyes wide in shock.
"Yeah, it's not big deal, though. What are you doing out here?" He asked seriously.
"I needed to apologize to Paul, but he ran off. I found him, but he didn't really want to talk to me," I said. I couldn't really be mad that he hadn't wanted to talk to me. It wasn't like I hadn't ignored him for a while anyways.
"What do you mean? He always wants to talk to you. It's really annoying because I'm your imprint and he keeps wanting me to give you guys some time to talk, but I'm glad that he's not as hostile as he used to be. I think you did that for him. You may not be his imprint, but you've definitely helped him," Jacob said with a grin on his face.
"I think I ruined things with him, though. I was really mad when he hurt you, so I haven't talked to him since then."
At my statement, Jacob's eyes darkened.
"No wonder he's been so aggravated lately. No one can even talk to him without getting their heads bitten off. He's been running so many shifts and I had not idea why, but it's obvious that he was just trying to stay busy. He misses you, Haley. From what I've seen through the pack bond, he thinks of you like a sister. He can't stand the thought of you being mad at him because he loves you like family. He barely eats anymore and acts like anything can push him over the edge. You guys really need to make up," Jacob said, a thoughtful tone in his voice.
"I know. I tried, but I don't know what to do. He won't give me time to talk to him."
"Trust me. He will. He's just stubborn, but he really cares about you," he said, although I could tell that there was a hint of jealousy in his tone.
We walked back to Emily's place in a relatively comfortable silence. It didn't take too long to get back, though, thanks to Jacob's ability to get us through the woods without getting lost.
Once again, I walked through Emily's door - I seemed to be doing that a lot lately - to see a room full of eyes on me. A few people had smiles while others just looked extremely confused. It seemed that the ones with full blown grins on their faces were the wolves. Shocker.
Jared walked over to me and put his hand on my shoulder, nodding his head with a look of pride on his face.
"It's so beautiful..." He trailed off, pretending to get choked up to my utter confusion.
"Paul being chased off by a human. I never thought I'd see the day. You have to tell me what you did to Paul. Please, tell me. I will give you a hundred bucks. I have to know what you did to chase him off like that. It's a fricken' superpower!" He nearly shouted, almost bouncing in his excitement.
"No, no, no!" Embry shouted from somewhere I couldn't see. I looked throughout the room in search of my friend but he was nowhere in sight.
Abruptly, he ran into the room, nearly shattering the glass doors that led outside in the process.
"I'll give you two hundred! You have to tell me. It's been my life's dream to be able to chase him out of the room in under a minute! It's impossible! Please, Haley! You don't want to crush my dreams do you?" He asked, full out puppy dog look on his face.
I sighed, placing my hand on my forehead and dragging it down my face. I didn't know how this had escalated so quickly. Paul was still my friend and it hadn't been my intention to chase him away.
"Guys, drop it." Jake nearly growled after seeing the look on my face.
"But Jake. C'mon bro, this is priceless. What did you say? Did you punch him? Please say you punched him. I could go into the woods right now and do that. Or did you slap him? No, I would've heard that after how many times Kim's slapped me for being an ass. I've heard that sound a lot lately. Ummm, what about-"
"I'VE ALSO SLAPPED YOU FOR BEING INSENSITIVE!" I heard Kim shout from the kitchen, where it seemed that she had taken over my duty as being the co-chef in the house.
"She only slaps me on the arm, though. She'd never hit my face, that's just a stupid thing to do," he said, winking at me and loping into the kitchen. I waited a full five seconds before I heard the cracking of yet another wooden spoon. Emily needed to get some metal ones, so they wouldn't break. Maybe I could get her a few for Christmas.
"JARED!" I shouted, hoping that I could get through his food induced haze. Luckily, he jogged back out, carrying the top half of a wooden spoon.
"Looks like I have to fix another one," he grumbled to himself, throwing it onto a side table and walking over to me.
"What's up?" He asked, his eyes alight with curiosity.
"I need your help," I said, a wicked smile forming on my lips.
