Chapter 54: Baby
"I can't believe you were living there and we didn't know," Olivia told Martha who was examining her while she sat in the bed, cradling Amelia.
"Your mum didn't want you to know," Martha smirked, listening to Olivia's heart with the stethoscope before pulling back. "Besides, it's a good thing I was here. The Doctor would've been useless!"
Olivia giggled before Amelia started squirming and fussing in her arms.
"Care to try again?" Martha asked, seeing the baby fuss.
"Yeah," Olivia sighed and Martha helped shift the baby to let Olivia feed her. It was the second attempt to try to get little Amelia to feed, and she hadn't cooperated that time, but now she was so hungry she wasn't about to be stubborn, Olivia could tell. "There she goes. This feels weird!"
Martha chuckled as she sat with Olivia on the bed.
"Where did you get the name Amelia?" she wondered, and Olivia's smile fell slightly.
"It was the name of someone that had been traveling with us," Olivia replied, keeping her gaze on the baby. "We met her after he regenerated. She and her husband traveled with us until…about six months ago."
"What happened?" Martha frowned, seeing Olivia's expression change.
"They…were lost," she murmured. "The Weeping Angels were in New York. She and her husband were sent to a time we can't get to. The time lines are too scrambled. They were our best friends…and we can never see them again."
Martha shifted to sit closer to Olivia's side, stroking her arm and murmured, "You've been through a lot, then. I'm sorry."
"Oh, Martha, it's not your fault," Olivia assured her then frowned in thought before asking, "You talk to Jack, lately?"
"No," Martha frowned. "You?"
"A month or so ago. Something was up. He was with Gwen and she said they were working. If there was something going on that involved Torchwood…why didn't anyone try to get a hold of me? Martha, what's been going on? I can see it in your face, something's happened."
"The Doctor made me promise not to say anything," Martha reported, making Olivia look to her with wide eyes. "But…it's done with now so I'll tell you. All I know is that, something happened that they were calling the Miracle. One day, everybody stopped dying. People would get injured with wounds that should have killed them and they wouldn't die. Maybe Jack and Gwen investigated it?"
Olivia stared at Martha with wide eyes filled with disbelief before looking away from her in thought.
"It's past now," Martha resumed. "Everyone's back to normal, but this Miracle lasted a while. Time enough to create classifications and deal with the people that weren't dying."
"Did U.N.I.T. have anything to do with it? Did they assist or do anything?"
"If they did, I wasn't notified. I was on a mission with my husband in Antarctica."
"Husband?!" Olivia squeaked, making Amelia jump in her arms and burst into cries. "Oh, Amy! I'm sorry!"
She covered herself up and held Amelia close to rock her gently, shushing her.
"The Doctor didn't tell you?" Martha frowned, leaning over to stroke Amelia's forehead, soothingly as her cries faded.
"No, he did not!" Olivia ground out before asking, "So, who was the lucky man I never got to meet and where is he?"
"His name is Mickey," Martha smiled. "He's back at home, working."
"Mickey?" Olivia frowned in thought. "Where have I heard that name before?"
"Jack might have talked about him. He traveled with the Doctor as well."
"Wait…" Olivia muttered, her eyes shooting wide. "Mickey Smith?!"
"Yup," Martha smiled with a nod, but frowned when Olivia lulled her head back with a groan.
"Everything leads back to Rose, doesn't it?" she muttered before looking to Martha and smiling apologetically. "I'm sure he's a great guy if you married him—"
"I know exactly what you mean," Martha smirked, making the two women smile to each other. "Blondes, eh?"
Olivia laughed then looked down at Amelia now happily squirming in her arms.
"How long will you stay with us?" Olivia asked Martha.
"I'm heading back today," Martha replied. "The Doctor said the two of you have to stay on the TARDIS for another month."
"Yup. I'm surprised I don't have to stay here longer."
"I'll bet you're itching to get out for a bit."
"Actually, I like being here. I'd rather be here than with mom in the house."
"I think I know what you mean. There's something about the TARDIS that makes you want to stay."
"Is it the TARDIS, or the madman that flies her?" Olivia smirked, making Martha laugh in agreement before they both looked to the door to see the Doctor stroll in.
"How are my girls, Doctor Smith?" the Doctor smiled, slipping next to Olivia to wrap an arm around her, stroking Amelia's hair.
"Amelia just ate, and Olivia's got her energy back," Martha reported.
"That's good," the Doctor nodded, kissing Olivia's head and looking to Martha as she stood. "Thank you, Martha. I'm glad you were here."
"So am I," Olivia smiled.
"You should thank Joyce," Martha replied, gathering her things. "She's the one that called me."
"But you didn't have to come," the Doctor replied, making Martha turn to them with a frown.
"Of course I did. You both know I did."
Olivia smiled and held a hand toward her to let Martha grasp it, both squeezing the other's hands before they pulled back and Martha continued gathering her things.
"Either way, we're both glad you were here for this," Olivia smiled, making Martha grin back at her.
"Thanks for inviting me."
That Night...
Olivia watched Amelia sleep in her cot, her tiny arms wrapped around as much of the stuffed bunny Aaron had given her. She smiled down at the baby sleeping peacefully and sighed, wondering what she would do after Amelia was a month old. Her smile fell when she thought of the Doctor leaving them there, but he hadn't spoken about leaving, and it didn't seem like he was going anywhere any time soon.
"Liv?"
She turned to the door to find the Doctor stepping toward her.
"Why aren't you asleep?" he asked, standing next to her to stroke her hair, then looked to the sleeping Amelia in her cot and smiled. "She loves the bunny Uncle Aaron gave her, eh?"
"She does," Olivia smiled again, reaching into the cot to stroke Amelia's head, affectionately. "I'm sure Aaron will be thrilled."
"You should get some rest, Liv," he insisted, coming up behind her to lift her from her sitting position by her arms. She squeaked in surprise then giggled as he lifted her bridal style and carried her to the bed to sit her down. "Baby sleeps, mummy sleeps. She could wake up any minute for a feeding."
"Alright, fine," she smiled, lying back as the Doctor pulled the covers over her. "But only if you get some rest with me."
"Sounds fair," he grinned before kicking off his shoes and climbing under the covers with her. She giggled as he pulled her closer to snuggle with her and she sensed the happiness she hadn't felt from him in some time in his embrace. "Liv?"
"Hm?" she hummed, hugging his chest with a huge smile, hearing one of his hearts under her cheek thump against it.
"After you and Amelia can leave the TARDIS, how about you and I take a trip somewhere?" he whispered, making her pull back to stare up at him with wide eyes. "We could go to Barcelona! What do you think?"
"Theta, I can't just leave Amelia! She's a baby! She still needs me to feed her and take care of her and…I can't just leave the baby with my mother and take off." Olivia sighed and rested her forehead on his chest. "You had to have known things would change once we had the baby."
"Of course things have changed, Liv," he smiled, pulling her a little tighter, making her look up at him again. "We'll come back, of course and we'll stay for a while and only leave when we get restless. I promise we won't stay away for long. We won't travel the way we used to, I know that, Liv."
She smiled in awe, hearing in his tone that he'd actually thought it all through.
"And mom was worried you weren't thinking about it," she smiled.
"You should know by now I'm always thinking," he smirked, kissing her forehead.
"I know that, but mom hasn't grasped the concept, yet."
"Get some sleep. I'm going to help her fix up the nursery for Amelia tomorrow."
"I wanna help!" Olivia pouted, making the Doctor chuckle and hug her closer.
"I'm just helping her move the furniture," he explained. "After you're able to leave the TARDIS we'll all go in and paint the room together."
"Maybe Aaron can come help, too!" she grinned. "He'll want to see the baby."
"The more the merrier. Now, get some rest."
A Week Later...
"Oh, she's so cute!" Aaron grinned, cradling Amelia in his arms as her tiny hand gripped his pinky. "Her eyes are so blue! Where'd she get blue eyes?"
"One of the Doctor's regenerations must've had blue eyes," Olivia guessed as they sat in the control room on the TARDIS.
"Or a future one," Aaron guessed, making Olivia swallow as the truth made her heart clench but she only nodded.
"Yeah, maybe," she shrugged, deciding to keep the fact that the Doctor was out of regenerations to herself.
"Amy would be honored that you used her name," Aaron smiled. "Maybe you can name the next one Rory, if it's a boy."
"I don't know if we're having another one. One is enough for now."
"What is this furniture made of, stone?!"
They both looked to the stairs leading to the console from the hall of the TARDIS to see Jack and the Doctor maneuvering a piece of furniture toward the door.
"Stop complaining," the Doctor grumbled.
"Now, boys, don't argue in front of the baby," Joyce called, leading them toward the door. "I'm glad you and Aaron decided to visit, Jack. The Doctor and I could use the extra pairs of hands."
"Anything for a pretty lady," Jack smirked as they shuffled out the door and toward the house.
"What a flirt!" Olivia called as Amelia squirmed in Aaron's arms, making a noise.
"She wants her bunny," the Doctor reported, just before they were out the door and Olivia lifted the white bunny from her lap. Aaron tucked it into his arms with her.
"I heard about the Miracle," she told him, making Aaron turn wide eyes to her. "So you did know about it."
"Jack just told me about it, but how did you know? The Doctor said he wasn't letting you go out or watch TV."
"Martha told me after I had the baby."
"Well, so much for that. At least it's over with now. Don't mention it to Jack though, I think it really messed with his head."
Olivia nodded in understanding as the Doctor, Jack and Joyce walked in.
"Ok, now that's done, I wanna see my niece," Jack announced, heading straight for Aaron. He grinned down at the little bundle and used a finger to pick up her hand and let her grab hold of it. "Hello, Amelia. I'm your Uncle Captain Jack Harkness. You don't have to use the whole name, just Uncle Jack will do."
Amelia made a little noise just as the Doctor stepped closer and made a face when Olivia looked up at him.
"What is she saying?" Olivia asked him and he looked up at her with a pout.
"She's mentioning how handsome Jack is," he muttered, making Olivia smirk at him as Jack kissed Amelia's tiny hand.
"Many thanks, Miss Amelia," Jack smiled.
"Oh, don't start," Olivia chuckled, shoving his shoulder.
"She's too young for me anyway," Jack quipped, making Olivia, Joyce and Aaron laugh as the Doctor only glared at him.
The End of the Month...
"You missed a spot."
"Where?"
Olivia reached out with her paintbrush coated with periwinkle paint and touched it to the Doctor's cheek, making him jerk back and look at her incredulously.
"There," she giggled.
"Oh, you'll pay for that, Liv!" he grinned, using his paintbrush to do the same to her. Soon they were in a paint war, covering each other in spots of paint.
"Alright, you two, that's enough rough housing," Joyce called as she stepped into the nursery holding Amelia. "You'll get paint where you shouldn't."
Plastic was draped over the furniture in the room and the one window in the room was taped up with plastic as well. Amelia's nursery was halfway finished. They were nearly done painting the walls, all it needed was to have the trim painted over with white and a few more decorations the Doctor said he would put up himself to surprise mother and baby.
"Someone's hungry," Joyce announced as Amelia squirmed and started fussing.
"Alright, give me a second," Olivia requested, putting the paintbrush down to head for her room to quickly change and clean up.
"She's not hungry," the Doctor corrected, dipping his paintbrush into the paint can next to him to resume painting the wall. "She's tired."
"I'll put her in the cot, then," Joyce replied.
"She wants mum to do it," the Doctor reported as Amelia made a bit more noise.
"Already a mommy's girl, huh?" Olivia smiled slipping past her mother to head down the hall. "Mom, follow me before she starts crying."
Joyce went after Olivia, leaving the Doctor to finish what little was left of the walls, and Olivia changed her shirt and washed her hands before stepping back toward Joyce to take Amelia into her arms.
"So, have you and the Doctor decided what you're going to do after the nursery is done?" Joyce asked as Olivia rocked Amelia, grinning down at her.
"Well, daddy has to take the TARDIS for a spin around the moon to try her out since he changed up the console," she smiled in a syrupy sweet voice as she kept her gaze on Amelia. "Yes, he does. And then when he gets back, he's gonna take mummy for a quick trip and we'll come back right after to see our little girl."
"And how long will 'mummy and daddy' stay after that?" Joyce questioned, setting her hands on her hips as Olivia stepped toward the cot they'd brought into Olivia's room to lay the baby down.
"I don't know," Olivia replied, honestly as she wrapped the blankets around Amelia and tucked her bunny closer to her. "But he said things wouldn't be the same, so he knows we can't just take off and not come back for months at a time."
"But time is relative in the TARDIS," Joyce reminded her as Olivia sat next to the cot to rock it, putting Amelia to sleep. "You'd feel like it's a quick day trip when here it's been months!"
"Mom, he's fixed the TARDIS so that we won't do that anymore. He knows I refuse to be one of those mothers that just dumps her baby with someone to go out and have a good time. If he gets restless, we agreed he can go off whenever he wants and I'll stay here with the baby. I won't be leaving every time he leaves. When I need a break, I'll go. But I won't just leave her."
Joyce sighed, nodding in understanding as Olivia still rocked Amelia in her cot.
"I know this is all…unorthodox, but Amelia is still a baby, and a baby needs its parents," Joyce explained. "I'm just worried you'll forget that."
"How can I?" Olivia replied, still staring down at Amelia. "This is all I've ever wanted. Yes, it's a strange situation, but the fundamentals are there, and the Doctor will make sure that Amelia has both of us." She looked up at Joyce who sat on the bed to watch her daughter and granddaughter. "You don't have to worry about us, mom. We're figuring it all out."
A Few Days Later...
"Theta, come on!" Olivia giggled, holding Amelia as she shuffled forward, the Doctor's hands over her eyes as he led her from behind. "I'm holding Amelia! You better not let me trip!"
"I won't," he assured her. "Alright, stop."
She came to a stop before the Doctor pulled his hands away from her eyes. Olivia frowned before she gasped at seeing the finished nursery, stars scattered over the periwinkle walls and on the wall over her crib were wooden carvings of her initials painted in TARDIS blue.
"Ooh! And, there's more!" the Doctor grinned, gently pushing her into the room to shut the light off and draw the curtain on the window to darken the room enough for the effect he was about to present. He used his Sonic on the lamp sitting on the dresser, and a whole galaxy of stars swirled over the ceiling, that gave the room a celestial glow, and the stars on the wall glowed in the dim light. "You can use your Sonic to do that. I fixed it up and put the setting on it."
The Doctor handed Olivia's Sonic to her and she took it, still staring at the ceiling.
"Theta, this is so wonderful!" she grinned, stepping toward the crib to lay Amelia down in the crib, fitted with TARDIS blue sheets that stood out against the light cherry wood. Amelia made a few noises and the Doctor straightened his bowtie with a grin.
"I knew you'd like it," he smiled, reaching down to stroke her thick, black hair. "Anything for my little girl."
"Ok, you're gonna have to teach me to speak baby," Olivia told him. "And also that trick you wouldn't teach Craig with Alfie."
"It's not something that I can teach you, Liv," he chuckled.
"Well, what am I gonna do when you're not here?" she wondered. "She'll be crying and it'll take me forever to figure out what she wants!"
Amelia made a few baby noises, making the Doctor laugh before he gave his daughter a stern look.
"Amelia, that's not very nice, that's your mum," he scolded, gently.
"See?! She's already talking behind my back!" Olivia pouted, making him chuckle as he wrapped an arm around her shoulders.
"You'll be wonderful, darling," he smiled. "Those maternal instincts will kick in, and you'll be alright."
Olivia pouted further and Amelia made another noise as she squirmed, making him sigh in defeat.
"Alright, Amelia," he sighed, making Olivia frown between them. "One month old and already I can't say no to you. Liv, face me."
"What—?"
"Just, face me," he insisted, turning to her as she did what she was told.
The Doctor lifted his hands to her face, placing them on either side of her head, his fingers on his temples, his thumbs gently stroking her cheeks. She recognized the gesture and closed her eyes, as did the Doctor before she felt his presence in her mind.
"You may have a bit of a headache after this," he warned, making her frown as she felt him searching for an empty spot in her mind, then felt as if that spot was filling up, like water filling a bowl. "I'm giving you information that no human would usually even be able to process, but since your DNA is altered, you'll be able to retain it."
Olivia said nothing until he lowered his hands and she instantly felt a headache coming on, making her frown in pain. Amelia made a small noise as the Doctor reached into his jacket pocket to pull out a pill and hand it to Olivia.
"She wants her bunny," they both said, making Olivia shoot wide eyes at the Doctor as he only smiled back at her.
"Did I understand that?" she breathed before looking to Amelia and grinned, "I understood you!"
"I'll go get her bunny," the Doctor offered, stepping toward the door as Olivia stared down at Amelia in awe, reaching in to stroke her head.
"I can speak baby," she breathed.
Outside the TARDIS...
"Amelia, this is the TARDIS," the Doctor cooed to Amelia as he held her in his arms, approaching the box with Olivia on his arm next to him. Amelia made a few noises and the Doctor grinned, "I'm glad you like the color. No, love, we're not going back inside. Well, I am, but only to take her for a quick trip around the moon. Break in the console. I'll be back in a jiff."
He turned to Olivia and handed their daughter to her before pressing a kiss to Amelia's forehead then a kiss to Olivia's cheek.
"Don't get distracted, ok?" Olivia warned. "I don't care if the men on the moon ask you for help, you come back here first, ok?"
"Liv, I don't plan on getting distracted," he smiled, lifting a hand to stroke her cheek. "I'll be back in two shakes, I promise. I've already got a place lined up for us to go. You'll love it."
Olivia bit her lower lip as she looked down at Amelia, making the Doctor frown at her in wonder. He thought she would be bursting with excitement.
"Liv?"
"Is it…far?" she asked, still looking at Amelia and the Doctor smiled in realization.
Just the thought of going too far away from their daughter was giving her separation anxiety. It was a good thing he'd thought of this before.
"It's not another planet, Liv," he assured her. "Or back in time. We'll be on Earth, in your time, in another country."
Olivia looked up at him with wide, bright eyes and a bright grin to match. The reaction he'd been expecting before, and it made him grin.
"Where?" she breathed.
"That's a surprise," he replied back, pinching her cheek. "But it's somewhere you've not been yet."
He pressed his lips to hers for a tender kiss and Amelia made a strange noise, making them pull back and laugh at her.
"We're your parents, we're allowed to do that," Olivia murmured to her daughter as the Doctor tapped Amelia's nose with a finger then turned to stroll into the TARDIS.
"Anything I need to pick up from the shops?" he quipped, opening the door.
"Milk and eggs," she joked back before he grinned and waved, shutting the door behind him and Olivia stepped back as the breeze around her kicked up.
With the TARDIS' signature sound, it disappeared, heading for the moon, and Amelia made a cooing noise that caught Olivia's attention.
"Yeah," she sighed, turning to head into the house again. "I love that sound, too."
