"Boy," Anne whispered as she watched Uther study the little boy in front of him. When she went to burp the baby, Uther reached out for him and she slid the child into his arms, as he drew the boy up to his shoulders his eyes opened up and Uther stared into the stunning blue eyes that stared back at him. He bent down slightly and kissed the patch of light brown hair before laying the child against his shoulder and began patting his back. "What shall we call him?"
"Daylen." Uther said as he heard the sound he had waited for, he readjusted the child in his arms as he and Anne traced the facial features of Daylen.
When they heard a throat being cleared, they looked up and found Gaius by the door, "Arthur, Caylene and Morgana were wondering if they could see the child."
"Of course." Uther said and he handed Daylen back to Anne as he moved to get a chair for himself and Morgana as Gaius went to let them in. He looked up and smiled as they all walked in and broke into grins as they took in the sight of Daylen and Anne while they walked toward the bed.
I smiled as Arthur set Caylene on the bed next to me, she peered at him for a minute her forehead scrunched up, before she reached over to my arm when I felt a slight push I forced my arm to not move as I realize that she was trying to push Daylen out of my arms. I smiled at her as I ran a finger down the side of her face, "I love you Caylene, you know that, right?" Caylene looked at me and nodded. "And you know your father loves you too, right?" Caylene nodded again and looked over at her father with a huge grin on her face. "That isn't going to change one bit now that you have a little brother, though you have to share your father and I with him like you do with Arthur and Morgana. Okay?"
Caylene looked over at all of us before sighing, "Kay." Uther chuckled as we exchanged a glance. Arthur and Morgana laughed a bit.
"So what do we call him?" Morgana asked finally moving to my side to get a better look.
"This is Daylen." Uther answered, as he sat next to my bed watching Arthur slowly bend down to scoop the baby into his arms. He scooped Caylene into his arms, and kissed her temple as he whispered in her ear, "That's your little brother, Daylen. Can you help Arthur and Morgana watch out for him like they take care of you?" Caylene nodded seriously as they sat together watching Arthur with Daylen, as Morgana and I were doing.
Finally, Morgana folded her arms irritation in front of her and snapped, "Stop hogging Daylen, Arthur, I want to see him as well."
"Me too!" Caylene demanded, copying Morgana's pose. Arthur surrendered his brother to Morgana, who was sitting on the chair Uther had gotten for her and placed beside his own. She tilted him slightly so Caylene could see him from her seat on Uther's lap. As he opened his eyes, Caylene waved her hand at him, "Hi Day."
We laughed as we watched her interact with him, as he started yawning Uther cleared his throat. "We need to leave so that Anne and Daylen can get some sleep. Come on you three." Morgana reluctantly handed Daylen to me before leaving with Arthur. Uther stood up slowly and looked over at me and Daylen. "I'll come back later after you both have had some time to sleep. I have some kingdom matters to attend to and I'll send a messenger to Faston to let him know that Daylen is here." I barely nodded as I was already following Daylen into slumber.
"Now that we know that it is a boy we have to figure out what to get him," Uther heard Arthur say from around the corner.
"Stuffed animal?" Was the reply that he realized was from Merlin.
"A stuffed animal for my little brother from me! Are you sure a tree branch didn't fall on your head when you were a child?" Arthur asked as Uther paused in the hall to listen. "I'll leave that for Morgana or Anne or my father to get him. No, I need to get him something completely different."
"A dog than." Merlin suggested.
"No, Amyntas is already too big for that room. What about a horse?"
"He can't ride it for at least a year if not more, Arthur!"
"A suit of armor?"
"Are you trying to suffocate him?"
"A sword?"
"I didn't think assassination was something you were into Arthur."
"Merlin, shut up!" Arthur finally growled before moving into the hall that Uther was in just as Uther started moving as well. "Father!"
"Afternoon, Arthur. The knight's training was good this afternoon, I trust?"
"Always is."
"Good. And Arthur," Uther added as Arthur went to continue on his way. "Try a pony colt. That way the pony will be smaller and can be ridden by a child by a child by the time that Daylen is old enough to ride him."
"What are you getting him?" Arthur queried.
"Anne and I had a wardrobe and toy chest made for him when we found out she was expecting. All that is left is doing some of the carving as the carpenter wanted to make sure that the designs would suit the child."
"What about his crib?"
"We are using Caylene's and we had a bigger bed made for her, which she will see tonight at bedtime." Uther replied before turning and heading toward his rooms where his new son awaited his attention.
I looked up from where I was holding Caylene next to me on the bed and helping her to hold Daylen as the door opened. I smiled as Uther walked in, and his eyes landed on us leading the grin on his face to widen. Uther walked over and I watched as he and Caylene played and spent time with the baby.
A few hours later, Uther opened the door at a knock and moved out-of-the-way as servants came in with plates full of food. "I figured tonight we could have our family dinner in here so that you would not have to miss out on it," Uther explained as Arthur and Morgana stepped in to the room.
I smiled at him happily and Uther moved forward and motioned to Arthur to come with him, "Caylene, could you give Daylen to Arthur so that you can go to your seat at the table?" Caylene nodded and slowly extended her arms so that Arthur could take their younger sibling into his arms, before she climbed off the bed and went to sit by Morgana. Arthur moved away slowly, carrying Daylen, as he took his seat at the table. Uther bent down, "Are you ready?" I nodded and he reached under me as he lifted me up into his arms. He placed me in my seat and then sat down himself.
As dinner was finishing up Uther smiled as he heard another knock at the door before he turned to Caylene, "Your mother and I got you a present. Since Daylen will need your bed, we have a surprise for you. Do you want to see it?" Caylene nodded excitedly, and Uther nodded to the older members of his family as he stood up to pick up Anne, Arthur went to pick up Caylene and Morgana continued to hold Daylen as she had been for the last fifteen minutes of the meal.
As Uther opened the door, Merlin bowed and gave them all a smile, "The gift is ready, sire."
Uther nodded and moved to the room across the hall and then opened the door, moving in with Morgana following behind him and Arthur with Caylene in his arms bringing up the rear. Caylene looked at her bed and her mouth dropped open as she squirmed out of Arthur's grip before running over to her bed. The wood for the headboard and footboard had carvings of flowers, the forest, and animals on it.
Uther and Anne watched as Morgana and Arthur helped Caylene identify the animals, plants and parts of the forests that were displayed in the carvings. Uther felt Anne's head lay down his shoulder and he turned his head slightly to look at her through the corner of his eye. "Anne, are you okay? Do I need to get Gaius?"
"I'm fine just tired still. Come on, I'll get you back into our bed, and then I'll come back for Daylen. Caylene can sleep in here tonight, I have asked Sir Leon to guard her room just in case she has trouble in the night or anything happens," Uther assured Anne as her face had grown worried at the thought of Caylene in her new room by herself for the first time.
After Uther had laid Anne down, he moved back into his daughter's room, said his good nights to his children and his ward, before he took his youngest back into his room with him and placed him in the cradle. He stood silently watching him sleep for a half hour before he changed into his nightclothes and slipped into bed beside Anne.
A/N: I know the two kids names were close to being alike, but they were chosen when I was thinking about having Caylene and Daylen be twins and then decided not to as it felt like a fall back for not knowing whether they should have a boy or girl, therefore I did it this way. But the names are fun if you put them together they mean "From the pure pool near the road". My parents did something like this for my younger brother and I, "Truthful Lady" and "Beloved King", and I wanted Caylene and Daylen to be around the same age difference as my brother and I are so that's why I have them so close (18 months ) in age.
