"Girls you had better behave" I warned my daughters as we entered the palace. We had arrived for Christmastide and I was very apprehensive about being here.
"Mama we will" Annette insisted.
"Girls your mother is just being protective" Thomas said defending me. We all went to our chambers to change freshen up for court the girls decided they would rather stay in for study were tired so it was just Thomas and I. "You need to relax sweetheart they shall be fine" he assured me as I bit my lip nervously.
"I have made sure that they are completely safe" he pressed his lips to mine momentarily before pulling away. Once I was finished changing into a fresh gown I went to my daughters room to find them already changed and giggling as they sat on the ground.
"Mama!" Michelle said upon seeing me and I smiled lovingly at her as she grabbed my hand leading me over to her sisters.
"Are you ready to be presented to the King and Queen?" I asked and they all nodded bright smiles on their face.
"When will we see them?" The girls asked as Thomas walked towards the door and we stopped to look back at them.
"Later, we shall dine in Court tonight but for now I want you to start on your studies" Thomas told them and Annette groaned.
"Oh papa!" She whined and I smiled softly.
"Annette, do not talk back to your father" I scolded gently.
"I am sorry" she sighed and he nodded.
"Shall Bella and Tom come as well?" Rose asked and Thomas sighed a little impatiently.
"I believe later in the week, now your mother and I must be going" they knew better then to ask if Catalina was coming. She was still too scared to come near Court and I did not wish to push the subject and thankfully Lord Oxford did not either and chose to stay with her rather then come to Court.
Catalina Cromwell, Countess of Oxford
"How is my sweet boy?" I asked my son lifting him up into my arms and kissing his face after he had woken up from his nap. He was two months now and smiled looking up at me with bright happy eyes.
"I knew I would find you in here" Lord Oxford said walking into the room and I held Harry a little tighter. I still did not feel wholly comfortable with him. Nothing would change the fact that he has sent my precious boy away from me even though he knew how much the child meant to me. And all because his father told him too. I was scared of Lord Essex, what if he made him change his mind again? I could not go on without my son it would make everything that I went through meaningless. "The decorations you have put up are very nice" I nodded in thanks wondering what he was really doing here. "I was also wondering what you would like for Christmastide? I cannot seem to decide what to get you" he said with a slight blush on his cheeks.
I eyed him curiously and shifted my son a little "promise me you shall never send Harry from me again" I whispered and his smile faltered just a little.
"I have already told you I would now. I can never express how sorry I am for what happened. I swear I shall never send him from you and know I am a fool for listening to my father, I was just a little shocked that Harry was a boy" I nodded and kissed Harry's head. "Now I do plan on getting you something now tell me what you wish for?" I finally smiled and looked down at Harry.
"What should mama ask for?" I asked him sweetly and he cooed gently in response. "I guess I could use some new dresses and ribbons and such" he nodded and looked to be thinking about something for a minute.
"Your father taught you to ride?" He asked and I laughed wondering why he would ask such a silly question.
"Of course! Papa taught all of us to" I giggled.
"Good, I shall get you your own horse as well" my eyes went wide in happiness and excitement.
"Oh really?! I have never had my own horse before! When we rode we always used the horses from the stable! What color shall it be?" I cried in excitement scaring poor Harry by mistake. "Oh no! I am sorry!" He kept wailing his arms outstretched before him his face turning red with tears.
"Here let me see him" Lord Oxford finally sighed and took Harry into his arms and gently rocked him. His cries quieted little by little and soon his tears dried up all together and he was content.
"I am horrible at this" I whimpered and he looked up towards me.
"No you are not. Catalina you are a young mother still trying to figure things out, trust me no one is perfect especially with their first child. I bet if you were to ask your sister Isabella she would tell you that at times she had the same doubts as you." I chewed my lip my fingers tugging at the end of my sleeves his words going over in my head trying to find a way to fault them.
"Are you sure?" I finally asked looking up to meet his eyes.
"I am positive. I am sure even your own mother was unsure what to do when she first had a child, these are not things that just come to us. Children are difficult and each of them are different, but I am sure in time you will get the hang of things. Harry already loves you and I am sure he can be patient" carefully he placed my son back into my arms and his words comforted me and made me feel far better.
"I do try really hard and try my best to remember how my mama took care of us when we were little, but it is hard when I was the youngest for so long" he nodded with a smile on his face.
"Have no fear I am sure if you talk to your mother she will give you advice to help you" Harry cooed gently as if reminding me that he was in my arms. "Now about your question I am not sure what color horse I should get you but if you tell me I shall try my best to see it that I find you the perfect one" he replied the smile reaching his eyes.
"A white one with black spots. My mama had one like that when we were growing up, I believe she still has her" I sighed remembering the horse fondly "twas a girl" he quickly nodded.
"Very specific but I am sure I can come upon one somewhere" I blushed as he left the room and slowly walked over to a soft chair sitting down and gently hummed to Harry.

"Mama please!" Michelle sobbed and I closed my eyes coming to my wits end with this girl. This morning she told me she wished to go outside in the afternoon and I told her she could if weather permitted. Now the snow fell down fast blanketing the ground and making it so you could barely see three or four feet before you.
"Michelle I already said no! The weather is to bad outside and if I hear you complain once more I promise you I shall tell your father and he will see to your punishment!" I finally snapped and she quieted down but went to sulk in the corner.
"When do you think it shall stop mama?" Annette finally asked after a few minutes and I rubbed my head.
"I am not sure sweetheart but it is coming down heavily" I glanced over at Rose who seemed to be lost in a book she was reading and relaxed back into my chair. I knew the storm would slow Isabella and Tom's journey to the Palace but with this weather I understood. They probably have not even left yet and I prayed they were all safe. Tom's wife Elizabeth was around five months pregnant and I certainly did not want her getting caught out in this storm! And of course Isabella was three months.
I let out a soft sigh. It seemed like all my children were grown and having children of their own and soon it would be Rose's turn. I glanced towards her and found her still reading "what are you reading Rose?" I asked and she jumped upon hearing her name and blushed.
"Oh Le DitiƩ de Jehanne d'Arc" I smiled softly and Michelle looked over.
"What?" Her voice was still full of tears and I beckoned her forward.
"Tis Joan of Arc" she rubbed her eyes and crawled up into my lap.
"Who is she?" She questioned.
"Ask your sister she is reading a book about her" Michelle looked towards Rose curiously.
"She was born in France and was said to have visions from God she fought for the King of France but when she fought in England they caught her and had her executed" Michelle gasped in surprise.
"That is bad right mama! God was talking to her and they killed her!" She cried looking up at me with wide scared eyes.
"People have their reasons sweetheart and God talks to a great many people. Joan of Arc was a leader of the French army and when you fight in war you must face the consequences of what might happen" I explained and she looked forward into the fire.
"Papa went to war?" I nodded remembering the time Thomas left to the North.
"Yes papa was in war, but thankfully God saw to it that he returned to us safely" I caressed her cheek and turned when I heard the door open and Thomas enter.
"William and Anthony have arrived, they are in their chambers" my eyes went wide thinking the worst. What if they had got caught in the snow storm? "Do not worry so much Katherine they are fine and no one saw this storm coming" I nodded and Michelle hopped down and ran to him holding his leg tightly.
"Papa what is it like being in war?" She asked him and his eyes seemed to get a far away look in them for a moment as he remembered.
"Why do you wish to know? War is nothing for little girls to be worrying about" he said patting her head fondly trying to brush off her question.
"Rose is reading a book about a woman who was in war!" She told him.
"What book are you reading?" He asked Rose walking over and sitting down next to me.
"Le DitiƩ de Jehanne d'Arc" she answered softly.
"So what is it like papa?" Michelle urged hopping into his lap.
"War is not a fun place to be, tis scary and lonely. I would much rather be home with my girls" he wrapped his arm around my shoulder pulling me into his side.
"Did you miss mama a lot?" Annette asked leaning into his legs as she sat on the floor.
"I missed your mother very much, now enough of this" I knew speaking about the North brought up more memories then he would care to remember.
"Okay papa" both girls sighed and Rose went back to her book and I leaned my head onto Thomas's shoulder and sighed in content.
"Why so quiet?" William asked boisterously throwing the door open causing everyone to jump in fright.
"Oh William!" I snapped angrily placing a hand on my heart.
"Sorry mama" he leaned over and placed a kiss on my cheek lifting Michelle up and throwing her into the air. She shrieked happily and he tossed her on the couch next to me.
"William be careful with her!" I gasped as he greeted his other two sisters "where is Anthony?" I asked as he fell back into the couch.
"He fell into the snow so he had to change" I nodded worrying her might catch a cold.
Isabella Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire
"Tis snowing so heavily" I complained shifting Sofia in my arms as she played with my hair.
"Ow!" She cried pointing out the window happily and I kissed her forehead.
"Yes sweetheart" and looked back to Lord Devonshire who had Peter playing at his feet.
"I know, hopefully it will let up in a few days so we might go to Court. But I fear we might be late this year or might not be able to go at all" he sighed and walked over placing Sofia down next to her brother and took a seat next to him and placed a hand on my belly feeling the slight twitch of the child inside me.
"I pray it not come to that" I whispered and Sofia pushed Peter angrily as he refused to share a toy.
"Sofia!" Lord Devonshire snapped angrily and she looked up pouting.
"No papa!" She cried and pointed to her brother who has started to cry. I lifted him up into my lap and hugged him close. Somehow I felt as if God was to make Sofia just like I was as a child to teach me a lesson.
"We do not push" he scolded and her eyes welled with tears which soon slid down her face. "Do not start crying now young lady you did this to yourself" she reached up for me soft whimpers turning into sobs.
"Now, now sweetheart" I sighed pulling her up so they were both in my lap.
"Do not baby her Isabella" Lord Devonshire said with a severe tone.
"I am not trying to baby her but I cannot stand to see her cry like that" I admitted as both children cuddled close to me.
"All children do not like to be scolded so they will cry" I nodded and put them both back down onto their feet.
"I have been thinking about what we shall name the child when it is born" I finally said after a few moments of silence.
"Have you any ideas?" He asked absentmindedly.
"For a girl I wish to name her Katherine after my mother and if I have a boy Richard" he seemed to think the names over for a moment and nodded.
"They are both good names and I am sure your mother will be honored that you are to name our daughter after her" I smiled and pet my belly.
"Mama baby?" Peter asked tugging my leg.
"Yes mama is going to have a baby in June" I knew he did not understand and I hoped both him and Sofia accepted the new baby and would not be too jealous. "Do you want a little brother or a little sister?" I asked and Sofia jumped a little with a large smile.
"Baby!" She giggled and I smoothed her blonde curls "Papa baby" she said with a smile and he melted under her blue eyes gaze. Sofia had him wrapped around her tiny little finger.
