"You're kidding me, right?" Helene told Amy. "You actually said you wished you'd never met Klaus?"
"Yeah, I did," Amy told her. "But I only said it because I was angry. I didn't mean it. And then Hazel showed up and proceeded to show me why Klaus was a better match for me than Jonathan, and all the reasons given I agreed with."
"Well, good!" Helene replied. "Cause Jonathan doesn't seem like your type at all!"
Amy looked at her friend. "How do you know that? I don't believe you and Jonathan have ever met!"
"Never mind!" Helene replied, lest she didn't follow her own stern warning to Adrian about giving away to Amy that Jonathan was out and about. "I just...I like you and my father in law together, that's all." She paused. "I wonder why Hazel didn't do that 'see the future thing' with me when Adrian and I were fighting? It would have saved a lot of trouble."
"You won't tell me how you know about Jonathan, will you?" Amy asked.
"No," Helene replied quickly.
"Very well," Amy told her, getting up. "I'm going to the bathroom."
"Wow," Adrian said, looking slyly at Helene, "Way to not follow your own advice and betray Margot!"
"I didn't!" Helene replied, her cheeks reddening. "I mean, I almost did, but I stopped myself!"
"True," Adrian nodded. "I'll give you that."
Helene sighed. "This secret is so hard to keep! Amy is my best friend, and it's not the sort of thing that you keep from your best friend."
"I'm sure that she'll find out in time," Adrian replied. "But since Margot is the one who is primarily in charge of him, she should be the one who gets to tell Amy, not you."
"I know that," Helene told him. "You don't need to tell me a third time."
When Amy came back from the bathroom, she sat on the floor and gazed at Adrian and Helene. "So," she said. "Anything interesting happen while I was gone? What are we talking about?"
"Margot," Helene replied. "I've seen her too, since she got back. You like having your sister around?"
"Surprisingly, yes," Amy said. "I wouldn't have had that thought even a year ago because of the whole fiasco with Jonathan, but now that he's in prison, he's not gonna be around to cause trouble between us." She paused. "I never had him pegged for a criminal. He seemed like such a nice guy."
"Nice guys can also be shifty," Adrian said helpfully. "I mean, look at my dad."
"Right!" Amy burst out. "I have to tell your dad about what I said. I don't want to, and I know it will just hurt him, but, just for the sake of honesty, I need to confess what happened."
"I'm sure if you make it clear you just blurted it out in a moment of frustration and don't actually feel like you wish you never met him, Klaus will forgive you," Helene told her. "Even if it takes a little time."
Amy sighed. "I just feel so bad about it, though!"
"Then go on your way and get the conversation over with!" Helene replied. "The sooner you tell him, the sooner he can get his grief out of the way, and the sooner things will get back to normal for you."
"Yeah," Amy replied. "I'm sure. I have to go home now. Thanks for your hospitality."
"Any time," Helene told her. "Any time. And don't worry about Jonathan, either. I'm sure there's no reason for you to."
"Yeah," Amy nodded as Adrian winced. "Okay."
She left and Adrian frowned at his wife. "You just had to bring him up again, didn't you? You were almost home free and you just couldn't keep your trap shut about Jonathan until Amy was out the door."
"I'm sure it'll be explained away somehow if Amy looks into it," Helene replied. "But with luck, she'll probably be so worried about things with your father that she won't."
Despite the fact that Helene seemed to think her knowing things about Jonathan was inconsequential, Amy found that she just couldn't let it go.
"Where do you think she found out about what he's like?" Amy asked Margot over the phone. "I don't think they've met, but I can't think of any other way for her to know about him."
"Astrid," Margot replied immediately. "Jonathan is a criminal, and Helene's mother is the head of the council. Since he's escaped, Astrid's probably been venting to Helene about it, and that's how she knows."
"I thought she knew because you told her," Amy said.
"Oh, no," Margot said. "After all the problems Jonathan Putnam caused to our relationship, I am not letting myself go anywhere near him again. You're much more important to me, especially since Mom and Dad are dead."
"You're so sweet," Amy replied. "I feel the same way. And thank you for talking some sense into me about Helene. If you hadn't, it would have just gnawed at me forever."
"Well," Margot cleared her throat. "What are sisters for?"
Amy smiled as she hung up the phone. Klaus came up behind her a few seconds later, put his arms around her waist, and kissed her neck. "I hope you had a good time at Adrian and Helene's," he told her. "I missed you."
"Yeah," Amy replied. "I missed you too. And you I, we need to talk."
"All right," Klaus replied, letting her go. "What about?"
"I want to confess something," Amy told him. "It will probably make you mad at me, and there are relationship experts that would probably scold me for admitting this, but when I was gone the other day, it was because I was with Hazel. She brought me to an alternate reality to show me what my life would have been like if you and I had never met because, in a fit of anger, I said out loud that I wished we hadn't."
Klaus sighed and shut his eyes tight. "Well, isn't that touching?" He asked. "Well, I can't be angry. It's not like you're the first person to ever want to get away from me."
"But see, I don't!" Amy cried. "I just said it. It was nothing I actually meant."
"Well, why would you say it, then?" Klaus asked.
"I don't know!" Amy replied. "And I don't feel that way anymore."
"Why would you say it?" Klaus repeated. "Was it because you're frustrated about me buying things for Savannah?"
"Yeah," Amy nodded. "It was. It's a stupid thing and I regretted it the second it came out of my mouth."
"Are you sure?" Klaus asked, the dark thought of Amy getting Helene's old attitude creeping into his mind. "I hope you're sure."
"Yes," Amy insisted. "I am."
"All right," Klaus replied. "But I think...I think I need to leave for a little bit. I'm going to Enid's." He left, slamming the door behind him and waking Savannah. Amy sighed and went to calm her, taking her from her crib and sitting down with her in a rocking chair. "Did you get woken up from a nap?" Amy asked her. "Don't worry, it was just your daddy. He's not happy with me right now because I said a very bad thing that hurt his feelings. And now, I have to figure out how to make it better." She began rocking Savannah and trying to get her back to sleep, but when that didn't work, she tried to think of something else. Finally, after about an hour or so, she decided to put a coat on Savannah and take her to the bar so she could apologize some more. She called Roxie to get the bar's address, and then sped straight there, not even pausing for stoplights. Finally, when she reached it, she parked, got Savannah out, and walked to the door, where two burly guards blocked the entrance.
"Who can vouch for you?" One of them asked her. "You don't look like a werewolf."
"Well, I'm not," Amy replied. "I gave birth here, though. And also, I'm Enid's friend, and married to Klaus. Do those names ring any bells?"
"Oh, sorry," they said and stepped away from the door to allow her to enter. "We're new. We didn't know."
"It's all right," Amy replied before she carried Savannah inside. "It's not your fault." She got inside and headed straight for the bar, where Roxie was mixing up a Grey Goose martini. "Hey," Amy told her, sitting down. "Have you seen your father?"
"Not since he came in here all pissed off, asked for two bottles of beer, and then disappeared into the back room. I hope he's not playing darts or something, cause that might not end well." She paused. "Why is he so upset? Did you two have a fight?"
Amy sighed. "Not exactly a fight, but...I got a little frustrated cause he kept buying her stuff, and I was freaked out that she would like him more than me, and when he went out, I might have said out loud that I wished I'd never met him, and then Hazel, the second most powerful witch alive, came and showed me the error of my ways. He didn't hear me say it when I said it, but I thought it would be only right to tell him. So I did, just for the sake of honesty, and now everything is a mess."
"Well," Roxie replied, "if you want to try and talk to him, he'll be in the back room like I told you. And I'll watch Savannah if you don't want to take her with you?"
"Are you sure?" Amy asked. "I don't want to interrupt your work."
"No trouble at all," Roxie replied. "I'm off in a few minutes, anyway. And if you and Dad patch things up, you should stay for the karaoke contest. Maybe he'll be drunk enough to do a duet with you!"
"I'll think about it if things work out," Amy assured her as she handed Savannah over, and headed into the back room where, as Roxie had told her, Klaus and another man were playing darts.
"Hey," Amy said, coming up behind Klaus and throwing off his aim so that instead of landing on the dart board, his dart hit the wall.
"Now, what did you have to go and do that for?" Klaus told her. "I was winning!"
"I just wanted to talk," Amy told him. "Can we do that? Come into the other room with me." She took his arm and tried to pull him toward the door, but he pulled away. "No!" he said. "I'm not talking to you! You hate me!"
"No, I don't!" Amy replied. "I love you! When Hazel took me back in time, it showed me what my life would have been like without you, and it would have sucked! I would have lived under my parents' thumb, married to a guy who cheated on me with my sister, and with my sister hating me still. Thanks to you, my parents are dead, I have a great relationship with my sister, and I know you'd never leave me. You're more than I deserve and I am so grateful to have you and Savannah in my life."
Klaus picked up another dart, threw it, and then turned back to Amy. "Really?" He asked. "Are you lying to me?"
"No!" Amy shook her head wildly. "I'm telling you the truth!" To his surprise, she grabbed him and kissed him hard, even though there were other people in the room, a very uncharacteristic move for her. "There," she said when they pulled apart. "Would that prove it?"
"Well," Klaus said in surprise without bothering to wipe her lipstick off his lips. "It's a start."
"What else do I have to do?" Amy asked.
"Sing with me!" Klaus replied. "There's a karaoke contest tonight!"
"I know," Amy told him. "I'll have to drop Savannah off first, but okay. Anything else?"
"I can't think of anything," Klaus said. Then, Amy got an idea. They left the room and then she grabbed an empty chair, dragged it to the center of the main room before climbing on top of it to get everyone's attention. When they were all staring at her, she cleared her throat.
"I have something to say," she told all of them. "Today, I made a very big mistake and hurt someone I love very much. Klaus, honey, I'm very sorry for what I said, and know for a fact that I will never think or say anything like it ever again, because I know there's only one person I want to spend the rest of my life with, and that's you. Again, I love you, sweetie. And I hope you can forgive me."
The entire bar went silent long enough that Amy started to feel color rising in her cheeks. Then, people suddenly burst into applause and a grinning Klaus picked her up off the chair. "You know," he said. "I think you're really pretty."
"You better," Amy grinned and beeped his nose. "How about I have Helene watch Savannah for the night and you and I can take part in the karaoke contest?"
"You don't have to worry about taking her home," Roxie said, coming around the bar, holding Savannah and her bag. "I'll take her back to your house and watch her for the rest of the night. And I'll take one of your cars back to your house if you want to drive back together."
"Sure!" Klaus replied, preparing to throw his keys in Roxie's direction before Amy placed a restraining hand on his arm. "It'll be better for Savannah if you just hand Roxie your keys," she suggested gently.
"All right," Klaus nodded and handed Roxie his keys. She left with Savannah, and Klaus and Amy sat down.
"Thanks for what you said," Klaus told her. "Coming from you, how you delivered the message, it was quite an honor."
"I hoped it would be," Amy nodded. Just then, Laura, who was working that night, came up to their table. "Hi, Uncle Klaus. Hi, Amy. What can I get you two?"
"Strawberry daiquiri," Amy told her.
"I think I'll have one more beer, and then an orange juice," Klaus told her.
Laura made note of their order on her pad and prepared to go, but Amy put a hand on her arm. "I heard from your mother that you're gonna be married soon. When's the big day?"
"In a few months," Laura replied, holding out her hand so Amy could see her ring. "Dad's a bit distressed to see me go cause, you know, I'm his first little girl, but I can't wait!"
"Well, I hope you and your fiance are very happy," Amy told her.
"He's a werewolf!" Laura told her. "Or a potential werewolf, anyway. If you're still here when he comes to pick me up, I'll introduce you."
She left and Klaus whispered to Amy, "personality-wise, her fiance is nearly a carbon copy of my brother. I personally find it a bit creepy, but as long as she's happy. I found them making out at Christmas and made sure Elijah never knew about it."
"Well, aren't you sweet?" Amy said and kissed him. Eventually, Laura brought their drinks and they sat and talked until it was time for the karaoke contest. Klaus and Amy went first, dazzling the crowd with their rendition of "Don't Go Breaking My Heart". They stayed for the other contestants, but since the majority of them were incredibly drunk, Amy and Klaus ended up winning first prize.
"That was great!" Laura said as they made their way back to their table, a guy who looked very much like Elijah following behind her. Once they were seated, she introduced him.
"Edward, you know my uncle, of course, but this is his wife Amy, who I don't think you were able to meet at Christmas.'
"No," Edward replied, taking Amy's hand in his. "I didn't have the pleasure. Amy, I'm Edward. Lovely to meet you." He paused when he noticed her staring. "Are you all right?" He asked her. "Or do I have broccoli in my teeth or something?"
"No," Amy replied, looking away. "I'm sorry for staring, but when Klaus told me you were like Elijah, he wasn't kidding. It's a bit disarming at first."
"Oh," Edward nodded. "All right. Well, we're going to go. Nice to see you two again, and be sure to drive safe." They left and Klaus leaned in toward Amy again. "See?" He said. "What did I tell you? Freakishly like Elijah, that boy."
"Yeah," Amy nodded. "I couldn't believe the similarities either." They then finished their drinks and stayed about another hour.
"Great song choice," Enid told them as they were preparing to leave. "It fits you."
"Thanks," Amy replied. "It does, doesn't it?"
"Is Ronan bar tending tomorrow?" Klaus asked Enid.
"Yeah," Enid told him. "And he's taking me and your mom out tonight. You don't think that's weird, do you?"
"No," Klaus shook his head. "Have a good time. I know I will."
