Day of Reckoning Part 2
Seconds later Dean was sprawled out on the floor of the motel bathroom. Lacey stood over him, her arms folded across her chest.
"What the hell is going on Dean?" She sounded angry but her voice was laced with worry as well. "Sam called me and said you had disappeared, that I needed to find you, it was an emergency." Lacey glared down at him. "I was in the middle of a danger room session."
"Sam didn't tell you?" Dean winced as he lowered himself down against the side of the bath.
"Tell me what?"
"Well this I probably my last night on earth." Dean replied as he looked up at her. Lacey narrowed her eyes at him.
"What do you mean?"
"I got turned Lace… by a vampire. And you and I both know what that means." Lace stared at him for a moment, open mouthed, before sinking down beside him.
"And there's nothing…" Lacey trailed off.
"You know there isn't." Lacey turned towards him.
"Don't freak… but I have friends that are vampires, this doesn't have to be a death sentence, I mean sure they're not quite the same kind of vampires as we have here, but still…" Dean shook his head.
"Sam's called Samuel in, when he gets here it will all be over." Lacey looked down at her hands, not knowing what to say. Dean studied her face for a moment, looking pained. He reached out and gently lifted her chin so she was facing him. Tears welled up in her eyes as she gazed at him with those blue orbs he couldn't resist.
"Lace…. If this it, if it's all over tonight, there's something I need to tell you… leaving you when I thought Sam was gone…. Was the biggest mistake I ever made, all that's happened is I've ruined more people's lives, I never stopped thinking about you, not for a second. If I could go back, never would have left your side." Lacey stared at him, not quite sure she believed what she was hearing.
"What?" Was all Lacey managed to gasp out.
"Leaving you was the stupidest thing I've ever done... and I've done some stupid things in my time." Dean gave a small smile. "I guess I won't get another chance to say this, I...I love you Lacey." Lacey's eyes widened. "I know what I put you through was awful, but seeing as I'm dying and all..." Dean leaned in and kissed her, gently at first. Lacey melted into him, all of the pain she had felt seemed to be washed away in that moment. As they pulled apart, Lacey bit her lower lip.
"Actually there's something I should tell you too Dean." He nodded at her to continue. "I'm an angel." Dean smiled.
"I know you are."
"No, I... I'm being serious. This past year, I learned a lot about myself, where I come from, what I am." She shrugged. "I guess you could kind of say I was sent by god."
"What do you mean?"
"Well, before God left heaven he wanted to make sure that the angels couldn't take over completely, he put in a fail safe, me. I was created by him and a few other powerful beings. Part human, part mutant." Dean's eyes widened. "And part angel. Not much." She hastily explained. "Just enough so that I could withstand an attack from them. So I spent most of last year with some people, you may have heard of them, the X-Men." Dean stared at her.
"Are you serious?" She nodded. "Sam would love this." He muttered.
"They aren't from this reality, I travelled through a portal to get to their world. It was amazing." Lacey gushed. "I mean I trained with the friggin' Wolverine for crying out loud. So anyway enough about me, I'm sure this is not how you want to spend your last hours here."
"Actually I couldn't think of anything better." Dean replied as he wrapped his arm around her. They stayed like that for a while, not talking. Dean stiffened and sat up.
"They're here." He and Lacey stood up and headed out of the bathroom and into the kitchen of the motel room. They heard voices approaching and a key was turned in the lock. Dean silently pulled Lacey back into the shadows, a finger over his lips.
"Can't keep track of your brother now?" Samuel asked, sounding annoyed.
"Well I didn't think he'd just..."
"He's not himself, Sam. He's a monster and he's hungry. You gotta be prepared to do the right thing."
"I told you he'd kill me when he showed up." Dean said as he and Lacey stepped into the light.
"Lacey, you found him." Sam sounded impressed.
"I'm a telepath Sam, of course I found him." Lacey smiled. Samuel ignored them.
"Did you feed?"
"I... I went to say goodbye to Lisa, which for the record was a lousy idea."
"Dean, answer the question." Samuel snapped.
"You can relax, I didn't drink anyone." Dean told him.
"Thank god."
"But I came close." Dean slipped off his jacket and took hold of Lacey's hand. "All right, do it."
"Okay, if you insist..." Samuel picked up his machete. "Or I can just turn you back."
"What?" Sam and Dean asked, shocked. Samuel gave Sam a look before continuing.
"I didn't drive all this way to kill you Dean. I'm here to save you."
Samuel, Sam, Dean and Lacey were sat around the kitchen table. Samuel pushed a book across the table towards Dean.
"That' my grandfather's journal. Cure's an old Campbell recipe, kind of like the soup. No one's tried it since god knows. What I hear… this stuff is a bad trip."
"Awesome." Dean muttered.
"Hey, the cure is good. But a lot of this is on you. You drink, you're done. It won't work. I'm talking one drop of human blood…"
"I got it."
"Do you? Because you will feed, it's just a matter of time." Dean slammed the journal shut. Lacey reached out and put her hand over his.
"What else do we need?"
"Some stuff we got, some we gotta get. Trickiest thing on the list; blood of the fang that turned you."
"That guy was huge." Sam commented.
"There's nothing in the recipe about easy."
"I can get it." Dean told them as he got to his feet.
"You're gonna walk right into the nest?" Samuel asked.
"Well I'm one of them, aren't I? So all I gotta do is get in there, get the guy alone and… shoot him with so much dead mans blood that he'll think he's rushing a fraternity."
"I should come with you." Sam offered.
"No, dude, you reek. You're like a walking hamburger."
"I'll go with you." Lacey said as she got to her feet. Dean turned to look at her. It hadn't hit him until then that he wasn't getting any smell from Lacey, her heartbeat was muffled.
"How come you don't smell like the rest of them?" Dean asked. Lacey shrugged her shoulders.
"It might have something to do with the advanced healing factor and impenetrable skin."
"How are you going to come with me? They're not just going to let you walk right in."
"'I' won't be. Just tell them I'm your dog." Lacey told him and a second later she had disappeared, leaving behind a reddish brown wolf.
"Wha…" Samuel looked down at the spot where Lacey had stood. Dean shrugged and pulled on his jacket.
"Where are you going?" Sam asked. "We haven't even found him yet."
"No problem. I can smell him. Two miles east of town. You guys get the other crap, meet me there." He headed for the door.
"Dean." Samuel called after him. He held up a syringe full of blood. "It's dead mans blood. Now there's enough there to drop a linebacker, and then some." Dean took the syringe from him. "Good luck son."
Dean and Lacey followed the trail across town until they came to an old abandoned building. Dean ducked down the alleyway as they followed a couple of vampires to the entrance. As the door began to close Lacey rushed forward and nosed it open. Dean followed her and opened the door fully.
"Good girl." Dean smirked. Lacey let out a low growl. They headed down the hallway and turned the corner only to bump into one of the vamps.
"S'up?" He asked, not noticing the way Dean flinched.
"Hey, I'm…"
"The guys Boris turned outside the bar, right? Said to look out for you."
"Yeah."
"Who's the pooch?" He asked reaching out a hand to stroke Lacey. She let out another growl and backed away from him.
"She's uh, a little protective." The guy shrugged.
"Well, glad you made it man." He held out a hand for Dean to fist bump. "Follow me." He led them further into the building and down some stairs.
"So you must be starving." Robert asked as they reached the bottom. He opened up a fridge and held out a blood bag to Dean. "Here you go." Dean tried not to recoil, he felt Lacey nudge against his leg.
"I'm okay." The guy gave him a look. "I killed so many people on the way over here, so…"
"Yeah, uh about that… company line is we don't just kill people anymore. But you've got to tell me what that is like." The guy grinned at him. Dean smiled back.
"Yeah. Yeah, first chance I get….I'll show you myself."
"Sweet." They carried on walking through a crowd of vamps who just stood against the wall glaring at them.
"Don't worry about them. They're just jealous. The recruiters get to bang all the chicks. That's you now bro." Lacey gave a snort.
"Recruiters?" Dean asked.
"Yeah. Big man'll explain." He nodded to where the guy who turned Dean was stood behind a desk. He was leant over a girl who was typing away at a computer. He glanced up at them.
"Be with you in a minute." He carried on dictating to the girl. "'Your skin is the black velvet of the night.' Nice. Stupid bitch'll eat that up, she'll be dying to meet." He leant in closer to the girl who shrunk away from him. "Go get yourself some blood sweetheart. Then march that little ass right back here, okay?" The girl got to her feet and left the room. "Thank god, I thought the hunter chopped your pretty head." Dean scoffed.
"Nah, I got away. Sorry, what's a hunter?" He feigned innocence.
"You'll see if he finds us. You'll see him inside out." He laughed. "What's with the mutt?"
"Oh." Dean glanced down at Lacey. "My dog. I went home after what happened and well, she's very protective, wouldn't quit following me around." Boris scrutinised her for a second before turning back to Dean
"You eaten?"
"Yeah good you'll need your strength." Lacey's interest wandered as she took in the room. Along one wall were cages full of girls drinking from blood bags. Above the the ceiling seemed to go on forever, but that could just be her new perspective now she was so much closer to the ground. Lacey's attention was brought back as she watched Dean being thrown to the ground by Boris. She leapt over to him and nudged him with her nose, he lay on the ground seeming to convulse slightly. As she nudged him again he seemed to come to and rolled over to face her. He looked past her for a moment and she turned to see Boris letting all the female vampires out of their cages.
"Go get him!" He ordered them. Lacey turned back to Dean and a look passed between them. Lacey turned back into her human form and grabbed Deans hand, porting them to the top of the stairs. One of the male vamps charged them, Lacey threw a fireball at him and as he stumbled backwards, screaming, Dean took his head off. A couple more came at them from out of the hallway and they were dispatched in a similar fashion.
"So…" Dean panted. "I might not be dying after all."
"Let's hope not." Lacey replied, brushing her hair out of her face.
"So, what I said before…"
"Maybe we should talk about this later." Lacey suggested as the horde of female vamps crashed up the stairs towards them.
"Sounds like a plan." Dean replied as he held up his machete, ready for the advancing tide.
Once they had dealt with all the female vampires Dean leaped off the balcony and back onto the ground. Lacey followed suit and landed beside him.
"You know, that's one thing I'll miss." Dean looked at her confused. "Being able to leap from great heights, being Mr Invincible?" Lacey elaborated. "You're more of a match for me." Dean chuckled and Lacey smiled back. There was a movement off in the shadows and Deans smile disappeared.
"You've stopped nothing you know." A voice floated out of the darkness, then Boris stepped out into the light. "This is much bigger than you and me." Dean stepped forward, machete at the ready.
Sam and Samuel had followed Dean's directions and were picking their way across the sea of bodies on the second floor. They reached the balcony and looked over the edge. Lacey sat on the edge of the desk while Dean was perched on a box, his foot resting on top of Boris' severed head.
"Dean, you okay?" Sam called.
"Yeah, I'm good."
A short while later they were back at the motel. Lacey and Dean were in the bathroom getting cleaned up.
"So, you wanted to talk about something earlier?" Lacey asked as she washed her hands.
"Yeah, what I said before…" Dean trailed off.
"Let me guess, now that you're not dying, you've changed your mind?" Lacey asked. Dean blinked at her.
"No. I meant every word Lace, I just didn't know if you could forgive me for all the crap I've put you through." Lacey looked up from drying her hands.
"Well…it may take time but, I'm sure we can find some way for you to make it up to me." Lacey smiled and Dean gave her his trademark grin. "Come on, let's go get you cured." Lacey told him as she led the way back into the bedroom. Samuel was pouring Boris' blood into a dark colored mixture on the kitchen table.
"If this works, it's not going to be a kiddie ride, you know that." He warned Dean.
"That's great." Dean muttered.
"So what'd you see in there?" Sam asked, sounding hopeful.
"What?"
"In the nest, what'd you see?"
"Sam, I can't hear you, your blood is so frickin' loud, okay? Just back off." He pulled a face. "All right, just give me the damn cure." Samuel handed him the mug. Dean took a whiff and pulled another face. "L'chaim." He joked as he chugged back the mixture. He spluttered a little as he swallowed it. "I don't think it…." Dean spun around and began to throw up blood into the bin. Lacey moved towards him but Sam put a hand out stopping her. Dean gasped for breath and his fangs popped out before he began to throw up again. When he finally stopped Lacey rushed forward and helped him sit back. Dean leaned back getting his bearings. His eyes focused on Sam and he frowned.
Lacey had helped Dean to the bed and he was starting to feel a little better.
"So what'd you see?" Sam asked again.
"What?"
"In the nest, what did you see?" Dean gave Lacey a look and she frowned back at him.
"Uhm… I'm still trying to work through it, but uh…I'm pretty sure they're not figuring anything out on their own. They're getting their orders from the top, where to go next, everything."
"Top as in…" Samuel asked.
"Their alpha, at least that's what I think it is. They've got some kind of psychic thing happening. He sends them, I don't know… messages."
"Saying what?"
"Honestly, recruitment drive. Their alphas building an army."
"Well that's comforting." Samuel gripped.
"That's not the worst." Dean told him.
"Then what is?"
"We don't scare them anymore."
Sam went to see Samuel off and Lacey made sure Dean was comfortable.
"Right well, I better get going." She said as she stood up from the edge of the bed.
"Go?" Dean asked looking surprised. Lacey smiled.
"Don't worry, I'll be back. I just have a few things to tie up." She leaned down and kissed him on the forehead. "I'll see you in a day or two, and if you need anything, Sam has my number." She gave him one last smile before opening a portal and stepping through. Dean let out a sigh and laid his head back on the pillows. Sam had set him up that night and he had no idea why, but he intended to find out.
A/N: Tada! Hope you liked the reunion, please review and let me know what you think!
