Sarah told him about her parents' divorce while she brushed out her hair, and about her subsequent temper tantrums as she painted on eyeliner. It was an old story, one she'd come to grips with long ago.
"But I think I stopped loving her when I realized that all I was ever going to be was a bargaining chip in their relationship. That took until I was about sixteen," she admitted, slipping her shoes on. "And now it's just generally easier to pretend I don't know she loves me second best.
