Chapter 51
I'm in the Capitol and talking with Layla.
"So how's that girl you were telling me about?"
"I realized I loved her."
"Did you kiss her?" She asks. She sounds happy
"No."
She's rolls her eyes.
"You're an idiot then."
"That's seems to be the reaction everyone has."
"If you love someone you should tell them."
"I can't do that Layla."
"Why not you afraid she doesn't love you?"
"I'm pretty sure she does, but I can't tell her."
"Why is that?" She asks.
"She could do better than me."
"So what?" She scoffs.
"She could do-
"I heard you the first time, but why would you think that?
I open my mouth but she keeps talking.
"I've never been in love, but I know once you find, that special person who can make you feel like the sun is shining out your ass well." She looks at me "You're supposed to hold onto that because they make your life worth something."
"But I feel like I would be dragging her down." I say.
"You're not dragging her down she's pushing you forward." She says and I roll my eyes
She lights a cigarette and this time I take one too. It doesn't feel good but I've been having headaches and this sometimes helps.
"See you only smoke when something is bothering you." She says and blows smoke.
"Well I've had something on mind." I say and blow smoke.
"This won't take the edge off then." She goes to inside her house and comes back with a pill bottle. "This is what you are seeking." She smiles and takes on out and I recognize it.
"That's what they gave me in the hospital."
"That's what I thought it's a Capitol drug that isn't technically on the market yet. They are only used in unusual situations mostly in mental facilities." She smiles "They don't want to put up with crazy people here either."
"Where did you get those then?"
"Where do you think Dylan?"
"Chevy." I say and roll my eyes
"Correct." She says
"So he just gave you these." I say with disbelief
"He said I should give them to you."
"I'm not going to buy drugs this is illegal."
"Relax Dylan this is the first taste. You try the product first so you know it's good, then you go crawling back to him and you will pay him… a lot." She says.
I swallow hard.
"You're doing this so Chevy can make a profit aren't you?"
"Actually no. Chevy has more money than he needs. Chevy said I should offer you to them and I don't go back on my word."
"I see." I say and take a puff from the cigarette.
She sits back down on the porch and puts the pill back in the bottle.
"I'll probably try one once you leave. I've always been curious on what they do."
I shrug.
"I wouldn't." I say.
She shrugs.
"You know that client you're going to be seeing tomorrow?"
"Not personally or anything just her name on a card. It's-
"Sapphire Heavensbee." We say in unison.
"How did you know that?" I ask.
"She is my friend. Anyways I told her I would be seeing you before so I would fill you in, when you go there you will be seeing her and her husband-
"Oh goody a threesome." I mumble and take a puff from the cigarette.
"No they are just going to talk to you about something important." She says and blows out smoke.
"What exactly?" I ask.
"Can't tell you but it is important Dylan." She pauses. "Don't mouth off to them either."
"But-
"They're good people Dylan." She smiles.
"Okay fine." I say.
Layla picks up the pill container. I just now realized I have been looking at it instead of her.
"You can lead the horse to water but you can't make it drink." She smiles and gets up.
"I don't know what you want Dylan but when you figure it out come and get me." She says and walks back inside.
"What the hell does that mean?" I turn to look at her.
"Figure out what you want in your life. It will be easier to talk about it once you know."
She walks inside.
I look at the sky, it is clear tonight.
I look down and notice she left the pill bottle. I pick it up and open the bottle and take a pill out.
"Exactly the same." I say and drop it back in the bottle.
"What do you want?" I mutter to myself and close my eyes.
I want Tori but can't have her because I'm crazy. I don't really want to go to the Capitol but that is my fault . I want everything to go away. The voices have stopped but I still have a strange feeling in my chest that won't go away.
I take a puff of the cigarette and blow it out.
"And right now I want nothing more than to take one of those pills." I whisper.
I walk into Layla's house and she is sitting in her kitchen smoking and reading a magazine.
"You know what you want?" She asks.
"I want to take one of these… with you."
She smiles.
"I was curious." She pauses. "Fine let's do it." She says.
It took two hours before the pills took effect and it was the same as I remembered except better. Maybe because I wasn't being forced to take them. I fell asleep after the high just like in the hospital.
I wake up and am still in Layla's house. I'm a bed which I soon figure out is her bed.
"Good morning you have fun last night?" She smiles. She is in her underwear and holding a coffee cup.
"What happened?" I ask.
"Yeah my memory is a little hazy also. What is the last thing you remember?"
"Swimming in your pool and then-" I trail off. "That didn't really happen did it?" I ask.
"Don't worry I won't charge you because we were both messed up. I can see why you like the stuff though you feel very happy almost invincible. I don't see why your addicted to it though."
"Try being on that shit for a year and tell me that."
"I see your point. I don't want to feel like I used you or anything but, you should probably go back to the hotel and get cleaned up. Sapphire will except you to look... professional at the very least." She says
"Why would she care if she just wants to talk to me?" I ask.
"Sapphire is going to be talking about important stuff and doesn't deal with the victors who are addicts that's my job." She smiles "But since she requested you she really does want to talk to you."
"So that means you talk to Haymitch then."
"Yup."
"That's why you wanted me to talk to him."
"Exactly but I was so vague you didn't think it was important. Correct?"
"Correct." I say.
She smiles and then throws me my pants.
"I do have a client coming soon so maybe I'll see you later." She smiles
"Probably." I say.
I get up and leave and notice she put the pill container in my pants.
I get back to the hotel and take a quick shower and head downstairs so I can see this Sapphire Heavensbee. Layla made it seem like this conversation was going to be important. I wonder what her and her husband want from me.
I head down to the car that will take me to the destination . The place looks familiar I think I see lots of clients in this area. I get to the destination and notice it is a large house white house with hues of blue in it. They have blue roses in the yard and climbing up the side of their house.
I walk to the house and knock on the long big door and the person who answers is a maid.
"Victor Dylan, Sapphire and Mikael are waiting for you upstairs."
"Mikael?" I ask confused.
"Sapphire's husband." She says in a monotone voice and leads me up the stairs and they are waiting for me in the huge lounge area.
"Mrs. Heavensbee your guest is here." She says.
"Thank you Gretta!" The woman exclaims who I am assuming is Sapphire.
Sapphire looks to be in her early twenties she can't be older than twenty-five. I almost stifle a laugh by the name Sapphire because her hair is a royal blue. She also has blue doll like eyes, skin that is a light shade of blue, and her nails are a color that matches her hair. I don't know if it is because her name is Sapphire or because she likes the color blue. I'm sure it would look strange if her name was Ruby and everything was blue.
Her husband looks a few years older than her. He has a strong build and could probably break me in half. He also has blue hair that matches Sapphire's skin. I wonder if he does that because he likes blue or because his wife does.
"Mr. Watt please sit." Mikael says.
I do as I am told it's not like I have a choice.
"Hi Dylan! I'm Sapphire, I'm so glad we finally get to talk with you!" Sapphire exclaims. She is very bubbly and exciting but, in a situation like this it is just annoying.
"I'm so glad Sapphire." I say.
She smiles.
"You don't have to act around us Dylan." He pauses. "By the way I'm Mikael." He says.
I nod.
"What makes you think I'm acting?" I say.
"Because we know what is going on." Sapphire says.
"I think everyone who buys me does." I mutter.
"Well... yes but, we know more than you think." Mikael says.
I roll my eyes.
"And what would that be?"
"That you first asked to see more people by your own accord because someone you loved was murdered."
"How do you know that!" I end up shouting but, soon gather my composer.
"I'm sorry."
He waves his hand.
"It's fine when victors come here they all have similar reactions." He says very calculated.
"So you buy all of us then?"
"Yes." Sapphire says still smiling.
"Why?"
"To talk with you." He says.
"About?" I ask unamused.
"There's a storm brewing Dylan." Mikael says
"Okay." I say confused.
"It has been for quite some time actually." Sapphire says and sits next to me.
"What are you two talking about?"
"We already know you don't like the Hunger Games because of how you act. You see Dylan mos of the victors don't like them either-
"And most victors would do almost anything to stop them." Mikael finishes for Sapphire.
"What exactly are you asking me?" I ask.
"That if it became feasible to get these games to end would you do it even if it ended with your death?" Sapphire asks and sounds more serious. I know the answer before it leaves my lips.
"Of course. I was never supposed to make it out of that arena anyways." I say.
They both look at each other probably confused by my comment but don't ask anything.
Mikael studies me.
"Good. When you come back to the Capitol see Layla, she will give you more information." He says and stands up. "It was nice to meet you." He says and leaves the room.
Sapphire smiles and scoots over.
"Layla called me earlier and told me to make sure you didn't feel uncomfortable. You didn't did you?" She asks and sounds genuine.
"Honestly Sapphire compared to all the other visits I do this is nothing." I say with a smile.
"That's nice. If you leave now I think you can make the afternoon train." She says.
"But won't it look strange if I-
"When we buy people they know it is so we can just meet them, after all they wouldn't have sold you to me otherwise. Your psychologist don't think you do well with a women who are too 'Capitol' looking." She smiles. "I guess we all have our little things." She says.
I actually like this Sapphire she seems sincere and genuine but, first impressions aren't always right.
I say goodbye and head back to the hotel to collect my things. I was in such a hurry this morning that I left my clothes on the bathroom floor. I pick them up and notice the pill bottle in my jean pocket still.
I close my eyes and breathe in and out.
"Get rid of them Dylan." I say allowed and take them out of the pocket.
"Get rid of them." I say again but, can't seem to let them go. I sigh.
"Just don't do it again." I tell myself and put them in my bag.
I head to the train and know I should've left those pills in the bathroom in the Capitol because I am weak and no matter how much I tell myself I won't take them again I know deep down that I will. The only question is when.
It's been a month since Layla gave me those pills and I can tell she feels guilty about it because I am turning into a crazed junkie. It is stronger than I remember and I think it is because of the other drugs I am taking. Emily has noticed I have been acting differently, she thought I was drinking. Which was not the case and she soon figured that out when there wasn't any in the house.
I'm on my way home from the Capitol and when I get off the train I see Tori waiting for me.
"Hello?" I say confused.
"Hi so how did your meeting go?" She asks confused.
"It was fine Tori." I say. I have been avoiding Tori like the plague. I'm in love with her but don't deserve her. I'm also worried I won't be able to deal with that type of relationship. Maybe I should be like Haymitch, some people do better alone.
"Oh." She whispers.
"What?" I say confused.
"Nothing." She says and walks me back to my house.
"Well, here you are." She says.
"Thanks." I say with a smile. She used to just come into my house afterwards but, hasn't in awhile.
"Bye Dylan." She says sadly
"Tori wait." I say and grab her arm.
She turns around. She looks sad
"What's wrong?" I ask.
"Nothing." She says.
"You can tell me Tori."
"It's just recently you have been differently particularly when you come home from the Capitol. I just…" She whispers and trails off.
"I know what you mean." I tell her.
"You do." She says suprised.
I nod.
"It's just… sometimes when I go there it's an easy distraction."
"Distraction from what?" She asks.
"Life." I say "When I'm there I can be anyone."
"You should be yourself." She says.
"Well that part is too hard to play right now." I mutter
She smiles but I can see the pity in her eyes.
"That's never true because you're the only you there is."
"What is this an after school special." I mutter.
"Dylan I know you might feel bad from travel or something but you don't have to be like this you're back in District Four now."
"That's just it though. Even though I've come back I feel like I haven't really come back. I don't think I ever will again." I say.
Tori stares at me and it is silent for a long time.
"Well I wish you would." She says finally breaking the silence that has been looming in the air. The truth is I wish that too.
