"Remember, you don't have to do this." Wales was still trying to talk his brother out of interviewing Davida. Fact was, he was blocking the door to the interview room.
"Wales, do you want to be responsible for a close friend's brother's death?" Lucas asked.
Wales glowered down at him, "Promise me you'll come out if she makes you the tiniest bit uncomfortable."
"I can promise you, but there's no guaruntee I'll do so." Lucas said, "Now move!"
Kuro walked into the room at that moment, saw the two brothers glaring at each other, and sighed.
"Wales," Kuro grabbed the lawyer's arm and pulled him to the side, "Let him do it. I promise, he'll be fine."
Wales sighed, "Okay, okay." He looked at his brother, "Just, be careful."
"I will, I promise." Lucas walked into the interview room.
"I told you, I'm done talking." Davida didn't even look up from her spot with her head on the table.
"Then why don't you get a lawyer, if you're done talking?" A rather familiar voice responded, snippily.
Davida's head snapped up, her eyes wide, "Lucas McKandless."
"Surprised to see me?" Lucas asked, leaning against the wall and one- way glass behind him.
"Not in a body bag? Yes." Davida sat up, the handcuffs around her wrists clinking.
"Guess you didn't do your job good enough." Lucas replied, leafing through the file that had been under his arm and not saying anything more.
"Oh, that wasn't me." Davida said, "You were hallucinating through the drugs and pain, dear boy."
"Wrong. I've been drugged enough times in the last decade that I've grown immune to it. Add in the fact I'm a good actor, and I can tell you everything you did to try and kill me in detail."
"Oh really?" Davida tried not to let her fear or worry show, but it still lined her voice.
"Yes."
"Then do so tell me."
"No. Because you're a sadist and chances are, you're like all other sadists- you get off on other's pain."
"Now, how would you know that? You don't work in the law enforcement." Davida snorted.
"Something I had my dreams set on before you kidnapped me." Lucas said, still not looking up from the file he was looking through.
"I didn't kidnap you. Your father did." Davida paused, "And dreams are foolish things. They never come true."
Lucas stopped reading, his head not turning from the papers, but his ice blue eyes pierced into Davida's own dark ones.
"Did you know that the number one reason someone becomes a sadistic is because of a harsh family life?" Lucas asked.
Davida didn't answer.
"So, tell me. What was your family life like?" Lucas asked.
Davida still didn't answer.
"You said dreams are foolish things. That they never come true. Well, you know what it looks like they do." Lucas said, "I mean, I'm living proof." Lucas crossed over to the table, laying the file on the table and laying his hands flat on the surface. Davida leaned back a little, "I dreamed that one day I'd get out of the hell my father put me through as a child and teenager. That I'd be reunited with my brother. Look where I am now. I'm with my brother, and my father's dead. I don't have that fear anymore."
Lucas leaned in close, "What about you Davida? What were your dreams as a child?"
Davida shrugged, though it was tense, "I never had any."
"Oh, don't say that. I'm sure you did." Lucas said, before opening the file in front of him, "Says here your father, who was your only caregiver, died when you were three. You were given into custody of your aunt." Lucas noticed how Davida shifted, uncomfortably, "So what happened there?"
"Nothing. I had a good life." Davida said, tersely.
"Hm." Lucas mused, beginning to circle the table and Davida, "You know, I don't believe that. I mean, you came from a wealthy family and you could've done anything, been anything, and yet... you became a crook."
"Like you know anything about me!" Davida snapped.
Lucas raised an eyebrow, "You're right I don't." He leaned in close, "So enlighten me."
Davida clenched her jaw, "I want a lawyer."
"Impressive." Kuro said when Lucas stalked out of the interview room, "You honestly got more out of her than even my team or Mikeala has- and she's the psychologist!"
Lucas shrugged, "Didn't take much, so don't worry about it."
Kuro stared at Lucas, before turning to his brother, "Wales, go tell Bao that Davida's requested a lawyer."
"Why me?" Wales asked.
"Wales. Now would be nice."
"Okay, okay. I'm going." Wales stalked out of the room, mumbling under his breath.
Kuro turned back to Lucas, "So, you wanted to grow up and be a cop?"
Lucas looked down at the floor, "Seems silly now, I know."
"Nope." Kuro said, laying a hand on the man's shoulder, "Keep on dreaming, Lucas. Because even if it breaks your heart, you can still achieve it. You can still do what you want to do. Know that."
Lucas watched as the woman turned and walked out of the room. Her words echoed in his head.
Maybe...
Maybe Kuro had a point.
