When Hamish moved from year nine to year ten the work load the school gave him was a lot bigger! The fourteen year old found it rather easy though, what with his genius mind. George on the other hand struggled a bit.

"Come on, you can do it!" Hamish encouraged as they sat at Hamish's desk at home, Hamish was tutoring his best friend and attempting to give him faith in himself.

"It's too hard! I hate maths!" George whined.

"I know, but if you want to stay in my group for Maths you're going to have to try and know this stuff!" Hamish said.

John knocked on the door and entered "You need anything, boys?"

"No, dad, we're fine!" Hamish rolled his eyes.

"I need Gladstone to accidentally eat this homework." George said.

John chuckled "What is it?"

"Maths." George sighed.

John winced "Ohh, not fun."

"I know." George nodded.

"You two are stupid." Hamish said.

"Hamish, don't call your father stupid!" Sherlock shouted from downstairs, the man had great hearing, but often selective hearing.

Hamish huffed "Well can you leave us alone to do this work please, dad?"

"Alright, alright, I'll be going… baby-boo." John teased.

Hamish threw an old teddy at John and the dad laughed and made a speedy retreat.

Sherlock shook his head well naturedly when John jogged into the living room and sat on the sofa beside him "You're such a wind-up merchant."

"It's funny, he's at an age where he's all tetchy! I remember when he was little and he loved little nicknames, would giggle at them!" John said.

"Me too." Sherlock smiled.

"So… it's my birthday coming up…" Hamish commented.

"Yeah…" George said as he continued to focus on his homework.

"You going to tell me your secret?" Hamish asked.

"Oh… I thought you'd forgotten about that…" George blushed.

"I never forget! Come on, tell me, as a present! My birthday is next week! I thought maybe you'd get it for me for Christmas but ah well, birthdays are better anyway! Please, George!" Hamish pleaded.

"Fine… but only on your birthday." George smiled gently.

"Great!" Hamish grinned.

When Hamish's fifteenth birthday arrived he was very excited, he had invited George over for a sleepover, his dad was cooking his favourite meal, his papa had bought him more materials for experimentation too, so it was a great day. And most importantly-George was going to reveal the oh-so-mysterious secret!

George arrived with a present and a card and a party hat on his head, he looked adorable to be honest! His brown hair was slightly messy and he had his glasses on, they were quite fashionable really, thick square black frames that made his brown eyes look almost golden!

"Happy Birthday!" George cheered "You're nearly catching up with me!"

"I'll always be like a month younger than you." Hamish rolled his eyes.

"Have you invited anyone else?" George queried.

"No, but nobody else likes me." Hamish chuckled, he didn't mind not being that sociable, he had George.

"True." George said fairly then handed Hamish the present and card.

Hamish thanked him "We'll open them later! I want to show you the stuff my parents got me! We've got some games we can play later!"

"Awesome!" George smiled and followed Hamish to his room.

As the evening closed and the candles on the cake had been blown out George and Hamish sat in Hamish's room playing a video game, George pressed pause then silently handed Hamish the present and card to open.

Hamish went for the present first and grinned when he saw a beautiful dark blue jumper.

"Wow! It looks so comfy! I'm going to enjoy wearing this!" Hamish smiled and hugged his friend in thanks.

"Now the letter." George pushed the letter into Hamish's hands.

Hamish put the jumper in a spot beside him then opened the envelope and began reading the letter.

After reading Hamish looked up to George with wide blue eyes, he didn't say anything.

George stared back then leapt up and sprinted out of the room. Hamish was fast behind him and when they reached the living room Hamish grabbed George by the wrist and spun him round to face him, he then grabbed George by the shoulders and pulled him in for a kiss. Hamish felt almost a bolt of excited electricity run through him as his lips fit against George's, he felt his hands positively tingling.

George's eyes were wide but he quickly shut them and gave a muffled sigh of relief and began kissing back.

John and Sherlock sat on the sofa together with wide eyes and just as Sherlock was about to speak John slapped a hand over his mouth and gave him a look that said 'this is their moment, don't ruin it!'

Hamish pulled away then hugged his best friend tight "I love you too… in that way. I always have but didn't want to cross that line unless you felt the same way…"

"Thank you." George whispered and buried his face in Hamish's shoulder.

Hamish squeezed him a little tighter and said "Thank you too, this is the best birthday ever!"

George smiled "This is unreal." Then he let out an "ouch!" indignantly "Did you just pinch me?"

"I'm showing you you're not dreaming!" Hamish pulled back and smiled cutely.

George ended up laughing at that "Thanks, mate."

"Let's go and play some video games… oh… hi dad, hi papa…." Hamish finally spotted them.

"Don't mind us… go and enjoy your birthday, but keep that door open thank you very much!" John smiled.

"You have the coolest parents ever." George whispered.

"I know, right… well sometimes I do." Hamish and George walked upstairs and Hamish began telling George stories to prove how uncool his parents could sometimes be.

"Fifteen years ago he was tiny… and dependant on us… look at him now." Sherlock said.

"I think we've done a good job." John smiled.

Sherlock pressed a gentle kiss to his husband's lips.

Later that night Hamish read through the letter again as George slept in the camp bed beside his own bed.

Dear Hamish,

You asked for me to tell you my secret for your birthday… well I've had a long while to think about this and I think I'm ready… and you deserve to know.

Please just remember you're my best friend and I would never want to jeopardise that between us… so if by the end of this letter you're not interested then I'd like to remain friends… but anyway, here goes!

I'm gay. And I love you. And I think you're the most incredible human being on the planet! Every time I see your parents I want to thank them for creating you! Every time I see you I want to just watch you and watch a piece of art right in front of my eyes!

I just wanted you to know.

Love,

George xxx

Hamish smiled contently, folded it up neatly then placed it in his bedside table drawer. He looked down at his sleeping friend… well, boyfriend now, and smiled. He knelt down beside George's bed and tapped his shoulder.

"Hmm, what?" George asked sleepily and flickered an eye open.

"Thanks for telling me… Love you too." Hamish said quietly and kissed George gently.

George kissed him back and gently ran his hand through Hamish's soft blonde hair.

Hamish pulled away and smiled and then said "Night night!"

"Goodnight." George said softly and shut his eyes to sleep again.

Hamish lay in bed and fell asleep soundly.
