Franz Hopper
Jeremy phoned Yumi who picked up.
"Yumi, it's Jeremy. We need you to be at the factory like five minutes ago. The Superscan has picked up an attack from Xana. This one looks like big trouble!"
"Why?" asked a half asleep Yumi as she rubbed her eyes.
"Because believe it or not, there are five activated towers!"
"Xana's planning something," said Harry.
Factory
"I've got a bad feeling about this one," admitted Jeremy as they jogged over to the elevator.
"So have I," said Harry. "Five towers and nothing out of the ordinary on Earth?"
"Relax you two," said Odd. "What's the worst that could happen?"
"Xana could take over me again and wreak havoc."
"There is that."
"It will be alright," said Sissi confidently. "Harry and Aelita will deactivate them."
Yumi slid down a rope.
"I got here as quickly as I could."
Lab
The doors opened to reveal someone at the computer.
"Ah, there you are! I've been expecting you!"
The group looked at each other.
"That Xana…locks the door, but leaves the window wide open…" continued the man as he resumed typing.
"Uh, uh, bu-but I mean…wha…what are you doing here?" asked Jeremy.
"I'm deactivating the towers!"
"Without going to Lyoko?!" Jeremy was incredulous now. Harry clenched his fists.
"Of course!"
"Buh uh…who are you?" asked Aelita."
"What? Haven't you understood yet? I'm Franz Hopper. I'm the one created Lyoko and Xana who I lost control of. He was a program that I based on a multi agent system to counter a military program."
"How do we know that you're who you say you are?" asked Harry suspiciously. "For all we know, you could be one of Xana's attacks."
"Ask me a question that only I would know."
"What did you call my mother when you were alone?"
"Rose? Little flower."
Harry frowned. He knew that the man wasn't Franz Hopper.
"Well…what about me?" asked Aelita.
"Eh? I created you to be the guardian of Lyoko. But I never thought I'd see you one day in flesh and blood.
"If that's true, then where have you been for the last few years?" asked Ulrich as he glanced at Harry. He nodded slightly. Everyone noticed and smiles flickered on their faces. They would play along for now.
"I've been a prisoner of Xana but I managed to escape."
"What now?" asked Yumi.
"We must destroy Xana once and for all."
"We'd love to but Xana has given Aelita a bug," said Jeremy. "If the supercomputer is shut down, she dies."
"We'll find the antivirus. You'll see."
"Sure, but how?" asked Sissi. Harry frowned. He could sense that the man was Xana so what was he up to?
"Well, that is why I came. I'm here to help."
Kadic
"He's very fatherly. Actually, he is my father," said Aelita. "He's the one who created me."
"That's true. I adore my own dad, but…he's sure no genius! This Franz Hopper is a real live genius," said Jeremy.
"That wasn't Franz Hopper," said Harry. "That was Xana."
"You sure?" asked Aelita.
"As sure as I ever am."
"There's no activated tower," said Jeremy as he checked. "Franz shut them down."
"He has a point," said Yumi.
Harry sighed. "There's one sector that we don't know much about. Sector Five. It could have a tower that we haven't seen."
"You're being paranoid," said Ulrich as he stood up. "He's here to help. I'm going to bed."
"So am I," said Aelita.
"See you tomorrow."
Everyone but Harry and Jeremy left.
The next day
Jeremy's phone rang as he slept at the computer.
"Jeremy? It's me."
"Franz?" asked Jeremy as he woke up.
"No, Michael, your father! You know why I'm calling? Happy birthday, big guy!" said his dad.
Jeremy turned to see his friends and Kiwi in front of him with huge smiles on their faces.
"HAPPY BIRTHDAY, EINSTEIN!" they chorused.
"By the way, your mother's worried about you. You should call us more often! Now, have you thought about that school for gifted children? Jeremy?" continued Jeremy's dad. Jeremy tried to listen to his father but his friends were congratulating him with laughs, kisses and pats.
"Oh, yeah. Sure. Ok dad. I have to go. My friends just came in. talk to you soon."
"Here, a present!" Odd handed him it as Jeremy cut the call.
"What are you waiting for?" asked Ulrich as Jeremy paused. "Go on, open it!"
"Wow! It's great!" exclaimed Jeremy as he looked at the picture.
"Yeah! And I drew it from memory," said Odd.
"So you can imagine how much effort it took," continued Ulrich.
"Thank you. How about going to the factory?" asked Jeremy. "I can't wait to see Franz again."
"I don't trust him."
"Why not?" asked Yumi.
"Because I know Franz the best out of anyone and he's acting strangely."
Lab
"You use the scanners to virtualise humans?" asked Franz.
"Well, yeah," said Sissi. "That's how we get there."
"It's the only way we can find to deactivate towers," said Jeremy. Harry flickered.
"The process wasn't ready for that yet. It's a very dangerous procedure, with serious side-effects…"
"Such as?" asked Yumi.
"Cellular degeneration…"
They froze and ran down to the scanners while Franz tested them.
"Odd seems ok. Ulrich, Sissi and Harry too. But Yumi…"
"No…it can't be…!" said a horrified Jeremy. Harry frowned as he overheard them.
"I checked the process. It doesn't cause degeneration."
Kadic
"I can't believe it…what a nightmare," said Yumi in disbelief.
"Nice one, Einstein! Doctor Schrank transplants animal limbs onto human beings, but compared to you, he's small time!" said Odd.
"I couldn't have known. I'm sorry."
"You're sorry?" asked Ulrich. "That's not going to cure Yumi."
"Neither is arguing," said Sissi. "We'll sort this out."
"Yumi, I…"
"Leave it Jeremy. I need to be by myself. Coming, Ulrich?" asked Yumi. The two walked off.
That night
"I'm sure there's a way to cure Yumi," said Jeremy as he stabbed the meatball.
"We don't even know exactly what's wrong with her," pointed out Odd.
"Me and Harry will work it out, I promise we will!"
"I could have a look in the magical world," offered Harry. "They might have a cure."
"I think you've done enough damage as it is," said Ulrich.
"What do you mean by that? That everything's been my fault right from the start?!" asked Jeremy.
"No it hasn't been your fault," said Sissi. "Harry believes that Franz isn't real. Don't you trust him?"
"You're the brains in this outfit, Einstein! And Harry can be wrong," said Ulrich as Jeremy left the table.
"You know, Ulrich, if it weren't for the scanners, I wouldn't be here," said Aelita as she stood up. "Harry has a reason to be suspicious. Plus, Harry knows Xana better than anyone."
"And I'm pretty sure that that man is not Franz Hopper," said Harry. "You know that. He got part of the question wrong."
"What? Little flower?" asked Ulrich. "That was right."
"My birth mum's name wasn't Rose. I'm sure that Uncle Franz can't get back to Earth or doesn't want to otherwise he'd be here."
They froze.
"Xana?"
"Xana. Now I think you need to apologise to Jeremy for what you said. I don't think the scanners cause cellular degeneration. They don't. Franz told me that the program that controls them doesn't allow for corruption. And I checked on my laptop. No corruption in anyone."
Harry pulled out his phone and texted Yumi.
Yumi's house
"Yumi, are you ok?" asked her mum as she noticed Yumi not eating.
"I'm…not very hungry tonight."
"Ahahaha! Ohh Ulrich, I looooooooooooove yoooooooooooou!" teased Hiroki as Yumi's phone buzzed.
"Hiroki! Shh!"
"I'm going to bed," said Yumi as she stood up.
"Sigh…that's it then, we're in the thick of it now!" said her mum as she left.
"Of what?"
"A teenage crisis!"
Yumi's room
Yumi pulled out her phone as she sat down on her bed and read the text.
"Huh?"
Harry's and Jeremy's dorm
Jeremy looked at the picture.
"Harry?"
"Yes?"
"Where's the real Harry?" asked Jeremy as he looked at him.
"I am the real Harry."
Jeremy sighed. "You know what I mean. You're one of Harry's clones."
Harry sighed. "He's checking out Lyoko. He's suspicious of Franz, you know that. He also thinks that Xana is trying to split the group up."
"How is he staying hidden?"
"How would I know? I'm just a simple clone."
"What should I do?" asked Jeremy. "There's still the offer to go to the school for gifted students."
"Stay here Jeremy," said Harry immediately. "You're still my friend and I know that you're stronger than Xana."
"Thanks Harry."
Yumi's room
Her phone rang.
"Hello?"
"It's Franz. I have some good news. Tell the others and meet me first thing tomorrow at the factory."
"Alright, we'll be there."
Lab, the next day
"I now know how to program the antivirus," said Franz as they came in. "All I need now is the data from sector five."
"Let's go and get it then," said Sissi. Aelita nodded.
"I thought the scanners were too dangerous to use," said Jeremy from the back.
"He has a point," said Harry.
"If you want to get to sector five, we have no choice."
"It'll be our final mission," said Odd.
"Ok then," said Jeremy. "What am I supposed to do?"
"If I were you, I'd stay out of the way," said Franz.
"It's not fair! Everyone blames me for everything! And after all, we all turned the Supercomputer back on together!" ranted Jeremy. Harry placed a hand on his shoulder.
"Perhaps, but you were the one who played the sorcerer's apprentice. You're the one who put your friends' lives at risk. And you're the one who let Xana destroy my diary," said Franz.
"How do you know about that?" asked Harry. "I never mentioned it to you on Lyoko. Besides, I managed to follow your notes and they turned out fine."
"Xana was pleased when they were destroyed."
Everyone frowned.
"Fine. I get it."
Jeremy stormed out the room. Aelita ran after him.
"Right? Shall we?" asked Franz. Odd smiled.
Harry's and Jeremy's dorm
"Are you alright?" asked Harry as he sat down on the bed.
"Are you the third Harry?"
Harry smiled.
"Why is this happening?"
"Because Xana wants to split the group up. Divide and conquer. At least, that's what the boss says."
"Can you hear him?" asked Jeremy.
"Yes. We're connected through the boss's magic. When we dispel, the memories we gain go back to the original."
"And you're the one who let Xana destroy my diary!" said Franz in Jeremy's flashback.
"Franz Hopper's diary…but how could he know the diary was destroyed?" muttered Jeremy as he pulled out a case. "That excuse was really thin."
"And you're the one who let Xana destroy my diary!"
"How could Franz Hopper know that?" muttered Jeremy as he looked at the damaged CDs. Harry looked at him.
"And you're the one who let Xana destroy my diary!"
"Xana…! Can you send the original a message?""
Harry nodded. "He's paying attention right now."
Jeremy gave the message and ran to the factory.
Lab
"Transfer Ulrich. Transfer Odd. Transfer Yumi. Scanner Ulrich. Scanner Odd. Scanner Yumi. Virtualisation."
"Hey, we've arrived directly in Sector 5!" exclaimed Ulrich as he looked around.
"Of course! There's a direct access. The Transporter's a little…outdated."
"Cool," said Odd.
"The countdown has begun. Clean up and I'll send Aelita and Harry over."
"Alright."
They ran through the entrance.
"Uh, Franz? I don't mind cleaning up, but we're going to need some industrial strength detergent!" pointed out Odd as they gazed at the Creepers. "Or Harry."
"No problem, I've programmed you each some new weapons! It's too dangerous for Harry to go over with Xana after him until the monsters are defeated."
"Uh…I don't see what's new about this!" said Odd as he looked at his paws. Sissi glanced at her hands too as Odd fired. "…Waahoooo! Homing darts! Now I'm on the same level as Harry!"
"No, you're not," said Harry. "I am still more powerful."
Ulrich sent beams of energy off his swords as Yumi's fan sliced three Creepers. Sissi's shots hit three creepers in a row.
"There's the key!" exclaimed Ulrich as he pointed at it. No one noticed a figure in the shadows watching them. Sissi flew over and pressed it as the others took care of the dregs.
"Well done Sissi."
"It's almost too easy!" complained Odd. "I want more Creepers!"
"Don't worry, Odd, it's not over yet…I've got more surprises in store for you…" said Franz. "Aelita? Harry? Are you ready for virtualisation?"
"Yes," said Aelita as Jeremy ran in and placed his finger on his lips.
"Here we go. Transfer Aelita. Transfer Harry. Scanner Aelita. Scanner Harry. Virtualisation."
They appeared in the desert Sector.
"Yumi? Ulrich? Odd? Sissi?" asked Aelita as they looked around. "Franz, we're not in sector five? What's going on?"
"Everything's under control. Jeremy. What are you doing here?" asked Franz as he looked at him.
"I just came to see how you're managing…Xana!" Franz electrocuted him.
"You're very clever, Jeremy, but you're too late," said the fake as he turned back to the computer.
"Harry's smarter and he suspected you as soon as he saw you," pointed out Jeremy.
Sector Five
"Hey, want to make this a contest?" asked Odd as three Creepers surrounded them. "Whoever gets the most wins!"
He tried to fire but nothing happened. Yumi's fans and Ulrich's sword disappeared.
"What's going on?" asked Sissi as she tried to fire.
"I'd like to know that too," said Ulrich.
"Franz?" A creeper fired and hit Ulrich. He doubled over.
"Something's wrong," said Odd. He dodged a laser. "Let's get out of here!"
"I get the feeling, we've been double-crossed," said Yumi as they ran.
Lab
"Haha, your friends are in a little trouble! I've fixed things so they can never rematerialise! No more life points, and it's bye-bye!" said the fake. "And now for the grand finale."
The Scyphozoas approached Harry and Aelita and picked them up.
"Admit you're defeated, Jeremy!"
"No, not this time," said Jeremy. "Harry helped me with a little something."
Harry and Aelita disappeared as the Scyphozoas started to have seizures.
"What's the meaning of this?!"
"A decoy," said Jeremy proudly. "Harry gave me the idea and Aelita is managing them."
"NOOO!"
He flickered out of existence.
Sector Five
"What now?" asked Ulrich.
"Well, there's only one thing to do. Franz! We need help!" called Odd.
"No, not Franz…Xana!" corrected Yumi.
"I wish Harry was here," said Sissi. "He would have been helpful right now."
The Creepers blew up as one.
"Looks like Xana forgot about little old me," said Harry as he slowed. "I was here all the time."
"This is a surprise," said Odd as they looked at the tower. "How did you get here anyway Harry?"
"The real Franz helped," said Harry. "He set the virtualisation up and make it look like I was still on earth. It helped that I left clones as well."
"Don't you have a tower to deactivate?" asked Yumi.
"Onto it." Harry ran to the edge, jumped into the tower and rose to the second platform.

Several Creepers surrounded the group. Odd looked at his paws then attacked the creeper with them. He acted like he was boxing with it.
"Rrraaaaarrrrarrrrr! Hm!"
Ulrich got hit while Yumi flipped over him and several lasers. Odd taunted the Creeper while Sissi flew up high.
"Get down from there," hollered Harry as he exited the tower.
"No way. I can't do anything so I'm useless."
Harry rolled his eyes and flew up next to her.
Ulrich jumped, knocked the Creeper to the ground, saving Odd, then he kicked the Creeper off the edge of the platform.
"Ciao!"
"I've often wondered how this would all end…now I know…this is it…" said Yumi as Ulrich was devirtualised. Harry swooped down and destroyed the monsters. "NO! Ulrich!"
"It can't be!" said Odd.
"Come on, don't be so pessimistic, Odd," said Jeremy as he sat down at the computer.
"Jeremy?!" asked Yumi. Sissi whooped.
"Yes! I'm back! Come on, let's start over!"
Yumi's fans reappeared and Odd fired. Sissi landed on her feet and shot her beam at the remaining Creeper.
"Hahaha, nothing like my trusty old gear!" exclaimed Odd.
"What about Ulrich?" asked Yumi as they turned their backs to the tower. A manta appeared.
"He's fine. I managed to rematerialse him in time. He's home."
"Do you mind bringing us back in?" asked Harry as he blocked the shots causally. "I want off this place for a while. Xana needs better monsters."
"Alright."
Odd, Yumi and Sissi peeled apart as Harry watched. He blew up the manta. Then he disappeared.
Harry's and Jeremy's Dorm
"Of course I'm not angry with you," said Jeremy. "Harry said that Xana was trying to tear us apart. I checked out your Bio schematic data while you were in the rematerialisation phase and you're in the clear Yumi."
"Harry told me I was in the clear through a text," said Yumi. "It's still a relief though. He rally had me scared, that Franz Hopper."
"That false Franz Hopper! The real one is still somewhere on Lyoko," said Jeremy. "It was a good thing Harry wasn't fooled."
"In sector five to be specific," said Harry. "Right under Xana's metaphorical nose. I spent the night talking to him. As to why I wasn't fooled, he acted too much like a machine. And he answered my questions wrong."
"You were on Earth last night," pointed out Ulrich.
"Correction, my clone was on Earth. I was on Lyoko as you well know. If I hadn't been there, you might not have survived."
"At least we're all safe and sound," said Sissi as she hugged Harry. "And we're not fighting. Can you tell us more about Franz Hopper Harry? Like, what you were talking about?"
"About ways to free Aelita."
There was a knock on the door.
"Dad?" asked Jeremy in surprise. "What are you doing here?"
"I wanted to see how you were doing," said Jeremy's dad. "And to give you this."
He handed Jeremy a present. The boy unwrapped it to reveal a book on robots. Jeremy hugged him.
"Well, I'll see you over the holidays."
He left.
"Your father seems like a really nice guy," said Aelita.
"Yeah, I love him. He's great!"
"Like father, like son," said Ulrich.
"Now, if only our dad was like that."
Jeremy stood the picture up as the group laughed.
"Oh, thanks for the advice your clones gave me Harry," said Jeremy.
"No problem. The clones were told to act like me and to keep an eye on Franz."
