Well now...it has certainly been awhile! I'm sorry for the long amount of time I have been away-I was sidetracked then completely derailed by the awesomeness that is Sherlock and Now You See Me. However, I'm going to come back to this collection and my other story as much as I possibly can. This challenge is taken from The Heart of Camelot which, if you have never checked out, you really should. It's an awesome site! :)

Family Secrets

The soft humming was the only sound that echoed through the empty noble's home. The servants had all been sent to bed, leaving only two still awake. She sat in the nursery, rocking her newborn daughter slowly, humming an old lullaby her mother had taught her. The path of dried tears marked her face, her eyes tinged with a hint of red from crying. In her hands, the baby girl slept peacefully, unaware of the turmoil rushing inside her mother.

"I did a terrible thing, my daughter." The woman's voice was but a whisper, choked from the tears she had cried. "A terrible, terrible thing. How can something so precious come from something so terrible?"

Vivienne stroked her daughter's face with her fingertips, a gentle smile coming to her face as she did so. She had held back the secret for so long. For so long no one had suspected, no one had cast doubts. No one, not even her husband, knew of her terrible secret. But now, here, alone with her newborn daughter, she could finally reveal it, could free herself, and only her daughter would ever know.

"You are not your father's child, Morgana." The words fell like lead and tears sprang from her eyes once more, but she forced herself to continue, for her own sanity. "I did a terrible thing with the King, with Uther Pendragon. I betrayed Gorlois, my girl. It was a moment of weakness, but I would not take it back, not when the price is you, my sweet, wonderful Morgana."

She wiped at the tears running down her face, never seeing the shadowy figure lingering just outside the slightly opened door. Gorlois bowed his head, eyes closed as he listened to his wife reveal the truth of what he had suspected from the moment Morgana had been born. The words hurt, but as he looked back in at his wife and her child he knew he wouldn't act on them. Morgana might not be his, but he would love her as his own. Turning away, he sealed the silent promise. This was one secret that would never be revealed.
