Chapter 49: See You Again
Jake bit his lip nervously. He was heading to the airport with Damien. They were going to meet Damien's parents and his parents there. He was sure Adam and Cooper would be there too.
Damien was leaving for the summer. He was going to Paris for a summer course he was taking. He was going to spend the summer abroad and learn more about the French culture and work towards his dream of becoming a French teacher.
Jake played with the wedding band on his finger. He was going to miss Damien like crazy. Being apart for almost three months was going to be torture.
"Are you ok?" Damien asked finally. Jake glanced over at Damien.
"I'm fine, I'll be ok," Jake said.
"Are you sure?" Damien asked softly. He reached over and took Jake's hand in his.
"Not entirely, but this is big for you and you have to do this," Jake said squeezing Damien's hand.
The rest of the ride was spent in silence. Once they arrived they got Damien's bags and headed inside. Once they got through security and headed to Damien's gate Jake spotted their families.
"Hey there you guys are," Adam said jumping up. He walked over to Damien. "So Paris?" He asked wiggling his eyebrows. He quickly said something in French that Jake didn't understand.
"God you're such a nerd," Damien said.
"Oh come on, like you're not gonna do it," Adam said.
"Do what?" Cooper asked walking up to the three with Miri.
Adam and Damien shared a look before laughing together. Cooper looked to Jake for help. Jake just shook his head.
"These two have been friends since forever, I've given up on trying to understand what they talk about," Jake said.
"It's nothing," Adam said turning to Cooper.
"Oh sweetie I'm gonna miss you," Camille said squeezing past Adam to Damien. She pulled him into a hug. Damien blushed but hugged his mother and then his father.
Jake stepped back with Adam for a moment. Cooper returned to his seat with Kendall and James. He let Damien have a moment with parents, they were going to miss him too.
"You ok Jake?" Adam asked looking over at his brother.
"I'm fine, this is what he wants and it'll help him," Jake said.
"You realize once he gets there and falls in love with the culture he's not gonna want to come back, he's gonna want to spend a semester abroad," Adam said softly.
"I've been afraid of that since day one," Jake admitted. It had crossed his mind more than once. This was something Damien needed to do though. "You have to let what you love go and hope it comes back. If it doesn't come back then it wasn't really yours to begin with," Jake said simply.
"I don't think I could do it," Adam said shaking his head and looking over at his family.
"You won't have to, you and Coop have everything you need here. Just be careful," Jake said.
"He won't hurt me," Adam said.
Jake looked over to Damien and saw Kendall and James were talking to him. Jake took this as his cue to return.
"Damien be careful over there, it's a different country," Kendall said.
"Yeah, your like our son have been since you were this big," James said putting his hand down by his waist. Damien laughed at that and gave them both hugs.
"I'll miss you guys too," Damien said with a smile.
"What about me?" Jake asked. Damien turned his attention to his husband.
"Of course I'll miss you," Damien said. He walked over to Jake and pulled him into a hug. Damien whispered in his ear, "I'm never as far away as it may seem, we'll be together soon, and we'll pick up right where we left off. I'll be thinking about you worldwide."
"You are awful," Jake said with a laugh as he shoved Damien away.
"But you love me," Damien replied pulling Jake back to him.
"Did he make the joke? I told him not to," Adam said making a face. Damien stuck his tongue out at Adam.
"I'll be back before you know it," Damien said his voice dropping once more. His words only meant for Jake. "Just know you'll be on my mind all the time. I'll be counting the days until we can be together again. I'll tuck you in over the phone too," he said with a wink.
"Oh go before I smack you," Jake said playfully.
"Isn't that spousal abuse?" Damien asked as his flight was called for boarding. He sighed and his smile fell a bit and turned into a smile just for Jake. It was a smile of love and adoration. "I love you," he said simply.
Jake did not get a chance to reply before Damien grabbed his face and pulling him into a kiss. Jake felt weak in the knees as he wrapped his arms around Damien's neck. He felt tears slipping down his cheeks. He broke the kiss and pressed his forehead to Damien's.
"I'm gonna miss you too ya know," Jake said swallowing the lump in his throat. "I'll be here waiting for you when you get back," he said.
"I know, I can't wait to see you again," Damien said with a soft smile. He let go of Jake and took a step back. He said one last good bye to everybody before walking over to the gate. He handed the lady his ticket and passport. She gave him and smile and returned his ticket and passport.
Jake watched him go and felt like crap. He felt an arm wrap around him. He looked to his side at Kendall. He gave a weak smile and Kendall just hugged him tighter.
"I know how you feel, letting someone go is hard but it'll get better. your dad once left to Italy for a month for a couple photo shoots and it was pure hell," Kendall said. Jake laughed and thanked him.
-Aftermath-
Kyle sighed as laid back on the bench on the patio. Now the school was out he hadn't had much to do. He had managed to patch things up wit Jayda and Miles. Lucas was never really mad at him. Leora was no longer as mad as she had been before either. He hadn't talked to Lilly though. He couldn't look at her without feeling guilty for causing her so much pain. And then there was Jared. He hadn't seen him since Miri's party. Kendall had forbid him from seeing him again. He told Kyle that Jared wasn't good for him and to trust him on this. Jared was trouble.
After the lecture about him not seeing Jared, Kendall had calmed and told Kyle he didn't care if he was bi or gay or straight. He loved him and he always would. James had his turn to do the same. Everyone told him repeated he had nothing to be scared of, but they were wrong. Kyle had every right to be scared. This was all new to him. He didn't understand it at all.
"You look like you could use some cheering up."
Kyle jerked from his thoughts. He looked up and saw Layla sitting at the patio table. She smiled at him.
"What are you doing here squirt," Kyle asked sitting up.
"I was bored and wanted to see if Adam was here with Miri. She's fun, but Leora was leaving and told me you were out here," Layla said.
"Yeah just thinking," Kyle sighed.
"I know what it's like. I was confused about liking Erika and had a hard time telling my dads," Layla admitted.
"I don't know why I have these feelings for him I just do," Kyle sighed. It registered in the back of his mind that Layla was barely fourteen.
"I didn't get it either, but you can't help who you fall for. I mean I don't like that you hurt my sister, but I get what it's like to not understand. It was better to end it now rather than not and hurt her worse," Layla said.
"How did you get so wise?" Kyle asked looking at the young teen. Layla shrugged.
"Whoever he is, you gotta tell him before it's too late," Layla said.
"My dad doesn't want me seeing him. He says he's bad news," Kyle said looking away from Layla. He wasn't sure why he was telling her all this, but it helped. It took a weight off his shoulders to finally talk to someone who understood.
"I think you should talk to Lilly though," Layla said.
"Are you nuts?! She probably hates me." Kyle shook his head.
"There is no probably about it," Layla said with a laugh. "You at least owe her an explanation," she added.
"You are way too smart for your age," Kyle said shaking his head at her. Layla laughed and smiled at Kyle.
-Aftermath-
Leora smiled as she watched Caleb, Miles, and Lucas talk about some video game. She didn't care much for the conversation, she just liked being near Caleb. Jayda was sitting with Sora and the two were in their on little world. Rion was sitting next to Miles listening to him as well. Lilly was sitting at the other end of the table. She was staring at her smoothie.
Leora moved closer to her friend. She knew Lilly was going through a tough time, but so was Kyle. She hadn't forgiven her brother completely, but she understood why he did what he did.
"Hey you ok," Leora asked softly.
"Huh? Oh, yeah," Lilly said distractedly nodding her head as well.
"Come on Lil, it's summer have some fun," Leora said nudging her best friend. Lilly looked over at Leora with a sigh.
"Sorry my mind is elsewhere," Lilly sighed.
"Lilly, I hate to say this in front of Leora and miles, but you need to forget Kyle," Rion said.
"Yeah forget Kyle he's a total jerk and not worth your time."
The group jumped and looked to see Kyle standing behind Lilly. Lilly turned and glared at Kyle. She was still mad at him. No one blamed her.
"Yeah if I were you I'd hate me too," Kyle said nodding his head at Lilly. Everyone was in stunned silence. This was the first time Kyle and Lilly had spoken to one another since Prom.
Lilly stood up and turned to leave. Kyle jumped in front of her and held his hands up to her.
"Wait, please hear me out," Kyle said.
"Why should I?" Lilly asked not hiding her annoyance at all.
"Because I am an ass and you deserve to know why," Kyle said.
"I think it would be better if you just leave me alone," Lilly said shaking her head.
"Oh come on, this can't have been that big of a surprise," Kyle said, "we had been drifting apart and you caught me...looking at other...people," Kyle said looking down at his hands. His confidence was long gone now. He swallowed thickly before he spoke again. "I am so sorry things ended the way they did. I was a jerk and you deserve so much better than me. Can you honestly tell me you were one hundred percent happy with the way things were?" He asked.
Lilly stood there before turning to leave once more. Kyle grabbed her arm and stopped her.
"Lilly please, I'm sorry," Kyle said pleadingly.
"Let go of me, don't touch me," Lilly said tears threatening to spill. Kyle let go and out his hands up. His stance became hostile like Lilly's.
"Fine, look I can only apologize so many times, if you want to be bitter and mad at the world then fine go right ahead! I'm not gonna keep wasting my time on this! Life moves on Lilly! It doesn't wait for you and if you're not careful it'll pass you by," Kyle snapped. He turned and stormed away. Lilly took off running as well.
Leora and Rion shared a look. They looked to Jayda and Sora as well. Jayda nodded her head. They took off after Lilly ignoring the looks people were giving them.
-Aftermath-
Kendall yawned as he fell onto the couch next to James. Taking care of Jenny was a full time job. He was tired and wanted nothing more than to sleep.
"Tired babe?" James asked
"Exhausted," Kendall replied with a yawn. "Between work and the kids I feel like I'm spreading myself to thin."
"We my poor baby, you know when Gustavo asks you to stay late you don't have to," James pointed out.
"I know, but besides out Big Time Rush royalties which aren't as much as they used to be, we only have one income right now," Kendall said.
"Yeah I wanted to actually talk to you about that," James said slowly.
"You want to go back to work?" Kendall asked knowingly. He had figured this would be coming soon. He knew James would get restless and want to work. He didn't blame him either.
"Yeah, I talked to my agent and he wants to set up a few shoots and get my name back out there," James said slowly, "I know we wanted to wait a bit but Jenny is almost a year old..." He started rambling.
Kendall grabbed the brunette's face in his hands and kissed him, effectively silencing him. They parted and James smiled guiltily at him. Kendall chuckled and kissed him once more.
"It's ok James, I'm not gonna tell you, you can't work," Kendall said.
"I know, but Jenny is a handful and some of the jobs would require a little travel," James said biting his lip nervously.
"James you travel for work, that's nothing new and I can handle Jenny plus we have other kids who can help watch her," Kendall said smiling.
"Thank you Ken," James said hugging his husband. Kendall chuckled again and hugged him.
-Aftermath-
Kyle paced back and forth in his bedroom. Miles and Lucas were sitting on his bed while Caleb was sitting in his desk chair.
The guys had come to talk to Kyle after he and Lilly had it out. Kyle had apologized, but he wasn't gonna coddle Lilly and feel bad about breaking up with her. The guys understood and Miles told him Lilly would come around. They were sitting in silence now.
"So this other person is it a guy?" Miles asked finally breaking the silence. Kyle stopped and looked at Miles for a moment. "Not that there is a problem with it, I'm just curious," he said.
"Yes it's a guy, I told you I'm bi," Kyle said nodding his head.
"Do we know him?" Caleb asked curiously.
"Does he go to school with us?" Lucas added.
"He's not in school and I don't think you know him and it doesn't matter cause my dad won't let me see him," Kyle said.
"Dude is it-" Miles started.
"Yep," Kyle cut him off.
"Isn't he the one you said-"
"Yes."
"Are you sure he's not-"
"No I'm not."
"Then why are you-"
"I don't know."
"Wow," Miles said shaking his head.
"Are you as lost as I am?" Caleb asked Lucas.
"Yeah, I can't follow them sometimes," Lucas admitted.
"It's nothing," Kyle said shaking his head.
"If you say so," Miles said.
"It's not like I'm gonna date him!" Kyle snapped annoyed. "My dad is a dictator and will make sure I never see him again."
"Since when have you let that stop you?" miles asked arching an eyebrow at Kyle. Kyle opened his mouth to speak but froze. A smirk played across his lips.
-Aftermath-
Logan followed Carlos through the grocery store. Ever since Lucas had started coming over more they needed to shop a bit more. Miles and Lucas seemed to be bottomless pits that ate constantly.
"So I talked to my mom and she's excited to meet the boys," Logan said getting his husbands attention. Now that it was summer they were taking a family vacation. They were going north to meet Lucas' adopted family and after that they were taking the boys to Minnesota to meet the rest of their families.
"I know Papi is excited but so mad that the police let something like this happen," Carlos said shaking his head.
"That's sounds like him," Logan said with a laugh.
The two continued shopping and chatting about their plans for the summer. They had so much they needed to do.
They arrived at the check out and Carlos was scanning the magazines when one cover caught his attention. It was a picture of him and Logan. He quickly scanned the headline and his jaw dropped.
"Logan," Carlos said Logan looked back and chuckled at the Latino.
"Oh come on Los don't believe everything you read in those," Logan said with a smirk.
"No it's the boys," Carlos said handing the magazine over. Logan took it and his jaw dropped.
"Crap, I was hoping this wouldn't happen," Logan said.
"Hey that's you two on the cover," the cashier said quicky. She looked no older than 19 and seemed like she was about to pee her pants. Logan and Carlos quickly paid for their stuff, including the magazine and left.
"We have to find the boys," Logan said.
Carlos quickly called Miles. "They are over at Kendall and James. I told them to wait there for us. I just got a text from Lilly though that there are people outside our house," Carlos said.
"Shit, I knew this would happen sooner or later," Logan sighed. He let out a frustrated groan.
-Aftermath-
Jared sighed as he lounged by the pool. The guys told were mad at him and he needed to get away from all the glares they were giving him. They knew Jared had done something to Kendall and that he was pissed. Kendall had given them a couple weeks off.
"You really stepped in it this time didn't you?"
Jared looked up and saw Roldy standing over him. Jared sat up, pushing his sunglasses up on his head as he did.
"I think I did," Jared sighed.
"Come on Red talk to me," Roldy said with a smirk.
"Don't call me that," Jared said with a smirk as well. "I hated when Jace called me that and I still hate it."
"I know, but it made you smile and now tell Roldy what's wrong," Roldy said sitting down next to Jared.
"I messed up big time," Jared said slowly.
"Like how big like that time when you pranked our third grade teacher? Or messed up like you and Jace?" Roldy asked.
"I thought we agreed to never talk about him again?" Jared asked.
"That bad huh?" Roldy asked, "what did he catch you hurting his kid or something?"
"I wasn't exactly hurting him," Jared said slowly.
"No," Roldy said shaking his head.
"He came on to me! I'm weak," Jared groaned. He fell back on his chair. He covered his eyes with his hands.
"Kyle?" Roldy asked. Jared made a muffed noise of confirmation. "He's sixteen!" He said.
"Who's sixteen?"
Jared sat up and looked at Noah and Matt. He bit his lip.
"I got into an argument with Kyle and Kendall took it the wrong way. He is mad at me and I will fix it," Jared said looking at Roldy, silently begging him not to say anything.
"Argument about what?" Matt asked confused. "You know what Munroe I don't care just go apologize and fix this. Our jobs depend on it."
"You don't think I get that! Kendall is stubborn and won't want to listen to me, I'm giving him his space to calm down," Jared said standing up. "Besides, look if he wanted us gone he'd have fired us on the spot. The fact that we are still here is good."
"He's right, if Kendall wanted us gone he'd have done it the moment Jared messed up," Noah agreed.
"See, I'm right," Jared said smugly.
"Don't get smug Munroe, what do you think," Matt asked looking at Roldy.
"I think if Kendall wanted us gone why wait this long to tell us, I'm not saying Jared's right, but it's a possibility," Roldy said.
"See Matty, you're worrying about nothing, just relax I'll fix it," Jared said. He glanced over at Roldy silently thanking him for not saying anything.
-Aftermath-
Adam sighed as he looked around his and Cooper's apartment. They had moved in shortly after Miri's birthday. It was a small two bedroom apartment located to the UCLA campus.
The apartment was small but cozy. It was enough space for them. Adam fell onto the couch Kendall and James had gotten for them. Kendall and James had gotten them living room stuff and Jennifer had helped with the kitchen. The place looked nice. It was perfect for them.
So why did it feel like something was missing?
"Addie?" Cooper asked emerging from Miri's room. He had just put her to bed.
"Hey Coop," Adam greeting the other brunette as he sat down next to him.
"So now what?" Cooper asked pulling Adam closer to himself.
"Just stay here and maybe watch a movie?" Adam asked slowly. Cooper smiled and kissed Adam's forehead. Adam grinned and grabbed the TV remote.
Adam started a movie. He snuggled back against Cooper. Copper chuckled and pulled the smaller male back against him.
"Addie."
Adam looked up at Cooper with a brow arched in silent question. Cooper just smiled and grabbed Adam's face in his hands and kissed him. Adam gasped and kissed Cooper back eagerly, forgetting about his movie. Cooper slowly pushed Adam back until he was hovering over him, their lips attached like they were stuck together.
Adam pushed Cooper back though. "My movie!"
"It's a DVD watch it later," Copper said as he reconnected their lips.
-Aftermath-
"So they're not gonna leave us alone are they?" Lucas asked looking at Logan and Carlos. They both sighed and looked at one another.
"With Carlos' popularity taking off again and the hype about our little reunion people are looking at us again. It was only a matter of time before this all got out," Logan sighed.
"Look boys, we're sorry about this," Carlos started.
"Let's get one thing straight," Miles cut Carlos off. "I've been friends with Kyle since forever. I've been exposed to all of this with him. I remember people always wanting pictures, and how much Kyle and I hated it. It was annoying it was," he said.
"I've never had to deal with any of this," Lucas said.
"We know and we're sorry," Carlos said. Lucas held a hand up to stop him.
"I came looking for you guys, I knew once we met this wasn't going to be easy," Lucas said.
"Look our dads are famous this comes with the territory," Miles said. Lucas nodded his head in agreement.
"Wow you two are handling this better than I thought you would," Logan said looking at his sons.
"I've been to hell and back, people taking my picture doesn't bother me," Miles said referring to Sandra and the what she put him through.
"What he means is we don't have a choice in this. We knew who you guys were and what we were getting ourselves into," Lucas said.
"You boys are sure you can handle this?" Logan asked. Both boys shared a look, grinned, and nodded their heads.
-Aftermath-
Jared sighed as he looked at Kendall's office door. He knew he needed to talk to him, but he was scared. It had been almost a month since the incident, but Jared knew Kendall could hold a grudge.
"Standing there won't help."
Jared turned and saw Penelope standing beside him with a grin on her face. She looked pleased that she startled him.
"I know, but you know how he gets," Jared said gesturing to the door and who was behind it.
"I do know, but I also know he cares about you boys," Penelope said with a smile. Jared nodded his head.
"Well here goes nothing, if I'm not back in five minutes," Jared said slowly. "Wait a little longer," he added cheekily. Penelope giggled and nodded her head.
Jared walked up to the door and knocked. He heard Kendall call him in. With one last glance at Penelope Jared straightened his shoulders and walked into the office. Kendall looked up and his calm demeanor changed.
"Ok so I know what you're thinking, but please just hear me out," Jared said quickly. Kendall thought for a moment before pointing to the chair in front of his desk. Jared quickly moved to it and sat down. "Look I didn't go up there with any other intention to tell Kyle I wasn't interested. He'd been showing interest for awhile now and I wanted to shut it down before anything happened. He's sixteen and I'm nineteen. It would never work. Besides you're like my boss and I'd never do that. He was confused and came onto me and I'm an idiot. I let things happen when I shouldn't have. I am so sorry for everything, I will never let it happen again."
Jared looked at Kendall who seemed to be thinking things over. Jared didn't like the silence. It was somehow worse than the yelling.
"Look I will never see Kyle again if that's what it takes. Don't take your anger out on the guys. They worked hard for this and so did I. Don't let one mistake ruin this. They deserve this more than anything," Jared pleaded. Kendall held a hand up silencing the bleached blonde.
"Your story matches Kyle's to a T," Kendall said slowly.
"Because it's the truth," Jared said quickly.
"I know but the fact is I don't want you seeing my son. He's only sixteen and he's got school to worry about," Kendall said.
"I agree, he's got other things to worry about," Jared said nodding his head.
-Aftermath-
Kendall walked out to his back yard. His family and the Mitchell's were all outside sitting around. They were having a cook out to celebrate summer before the Mitchell's left for the summer to visit family in Minnesota and Lucas' adopted family up north.
James and Carlos manned the grill. Lilly, Leora, and Layla were sitting together on porch talking and laughing. Kendall was glad the older two were including Layla. Miles, Lucas and Kyle were sitting at the table in the lawn talking and laughing. Lilly and Kyle seemed to be avoiding one another. Jake and Adam were playing with Miri and Jenny. Cooper and Logan had to work so they would be arriving shortly.
Kendall couldn't help but feel happy with the way things had turned out. Sure most of it wasn't ideal, but this was his family. He wouldn't change them for the world.
Kendall walked over to his husband and best friend. They both greeted him with a smile.
"Hey," Kendall said, "food ready yet?"
"Not yet, you're as bad as the boys," James scolded his husband.
"It's almost done," Carlos said chuckling at the two.
Kendall looked out to the yard at his family. Yeah they weren't perfect, but they were family. Nothing would make him love them any less.
"So how are things at work you the boss yet?" Carlos asked teasingly.
"As long as Gustavo can still yell I'll never be boss," Kendall replied getting laughs from the other two.
"Does steam still come from his ears when he's mad?"
The three turned and saw Logan standing behind them. Carlos jumped up and gave him a hug and quick kiss. The four settled into conversation with one another.
Ok, so much has happened in this chapter. Damien left for Paris, how will this affect his relationship with Jake? Kyle is over Lilly and ready to move on. Will it be with Jared or someone else? Lilly's not over Kyle, will she ever get past the hurt? Miles and Lucas are fitting in nicely with the Mitchell's, will they crack from the pressure of having famous parents? Jared agreed to do whatever it take to keep the band alive, will be not see Kyle anymore? Adam and Cooper have started a new chapter of life, will things work out? What is Adam missing? James wants to work again, can he balance his family and his job?
So many questions, so little time. This is a wrap up of the fic and a lead into the next fic, We Are. There will be drama and happiness and sadness and maybe even another baby? I'd love to hear your guys' predictions for the upcoming fic.
