Inventing Shadows
Chapter 49: To the End of It All- Carl
August 8/ 2015 7:16am
Carl pounded on the door. They had tried last night but the neighbor said that the man worked nights and would not be home. It had reminded Carl that he was supposed to be working nights this week, but the plant had given him time off given the circumstances. Marcey stood behind him with hitched breath and wide eyes. I am certain this will be the end. He banged on the door again. "Matt Hinds," he called, trying his best to contain his temper, "My name is Carl Pellar."
"He knows who you are, Carl."
"I know," he growled. He sighed after, "I'm sorry, I didn't,"
"I know," she cut him off. She pushed passed him and banged on the the door herself. This is him. I know it is. Marcey knows it is. Damn Chace said that there was not enough proof to warrant the guy. They are checking out the club right now though, and once they see what we saw they will be banging on this door with us. Marcey dropped to her knees and pulled something out of her purse.
"What are you doing?" He asked her.
"Finishing this," she sighed. Carl looked over and shoulder and saw her fiddling with the lock and then he heard a pop. Marcey smiled up at him.
"Bobby pins come in handy sometimes."
"I'm pretty sure that's illegal, Marcey."
"By the time they get here we will already be gone."
"Finishing this."
"Yea." She smiled again and allowed him to enter. He looked around at the seemingly normal apartment. It wasn't clean but it wasn't messy either. He grimaced. I just know there has to be something here. Marcey made her way into the bedroom as Carl looked through the kitchen and living room. He knocked over books and yanked open cupboards but found nothing. "Oh!" He heard Marcey gasp. He quickly rushed into the bedroom and saw her standing brushing herself off. She looked over at him sheepishly. "Sorry, this is one of those folding beds." Carl attempted to smile at her but it came out as more of a scowl. His blue eyes caught something though.
"Marcey," he pointed to the wooden backboard of the folding bed. Marcey looked at it and noticed the sliver of a crack on it. She hopped on the bed and put her slim fingers into the crack and pulled; it opened up like closet doors. There was no closet inside though, but instead there was simply a giant picture of a cabin in the woods on the wall along with pictures of every 'Crimson Kisser' victim. Oh, Kaylee. Carl stared at the image of his eldest daughter plastered on the wall next to Melody Charlestine. For the first time in days he silently asked that his late wife watch over Kaylee just a little longer; he was so close. I will save our daughter, Anita. I will. Marcey reached behind where the bed met the board and pulled something out. She flattened it out on the bed.
"Carl," he voice was laced with sugar as if she had found the sweetest reward ever. He looked over at her. A map! He stared down at the paper and he immediately spotted the giant red circle. "It's on the outskirts."
"Marcey,"
"Let's go," she interrupted him again. She folded the map back up and gently shoved on Carl's shoulder in an effort to get him moving. "There's no time for thanks. Thank me when your daughter is saved." When, not if. I like the sound of the that. He didn't need to be told twice.
He had never pushed down on the gas pedal of his Durango so hard, so the inevitable stop almost gave him whiplash. Marcey looked like she was going to be sick for a moment when he had started going, but she recovered and had let out a laughing sigh as she made herself comfortable. She had said that the cops would be following shortly with his erratic driving, but he had told her that was a good thing. If the cops followed him here they would be catching the 'Crimson Kisser' with him. The back of the cabin was in their view, they had decided that taking the back road would give them the element of surprise, and Carl never felt his heart so heavy. All of the worst things could happen right here. Marcey opened her passenger side door and Carl opened his driver side. He looked at Marcey silently. She has done so much for me. He knew now was not the time to contemplate Marcey and his situation though. Marcey glanced at him and saw him staring and she blushed lightly. "How do you want to do this?" She asked. Before he could answer a gunshot rang out and was followed by a shriek that left both of them with wide eyes and frantic hearts.
A.N- So here we are, heading into the final chapter, the final showdown. So I lied, the next chapter is technically the final chapter but there will be an epilogue. Did you guys suspect Matt at all?
