Chapter 54

Odion waited for the pounding in his head to subside somewhat and drew in a deep breath before climbing up the last stair. Keren removed her hand from the small of his back as she walked up behind him, and he turned to face her, placing his sizable hands on her shoulders. "Thank you for your assistance, Keren. However, I'll be fine from this moment on. "

Keren blinked in surprise, not expecting the older man to take such a risk when he had relented enough to allow her to come outside with him. "But Odion, you're still shaky on your feet," she protested, her eyes filled with worry.

Odion stared deep into the young woman's eyes, seeing the concern in them. He knew he would be telling a bold-faced lie if he said he was feeling one hundred percent better, but he couldn't allow his condition to hinder him. 'There is far too much at stake.' His hands became firmer on her shoulders. "I appreciate your concern and I truly am grateful that you chose to accompany me, despite the danger. But I must do this." He spoke gently but firmly, leaving very little room for an objection.

A shadow of doubt crossed Keren's dainty features, followed by an uneasy feeling in her stomach. With how badly her companion had been hurt and the fact that he still had yet to make a full recovery from the injury, she had a feeling something worse would happen if she followed through with his request. 'What shall I say? He's so adamant about not receiving any more assistance regardless of my concerns, but I don't wish for him to be hurt worse than he already is.' It was times like this she felt like ripping her hair out. His pride drove her insane, but she didn't want to start an argument. She was quiet, then breathed out a heavy sigh after awhile. "Listen, "she began just as firmly. "I understand how important this task is to you and that you are only trying to protect me. However, you are not entirely safe, either. If anything happened to you when I could have helped to prevent it, I wouldn't be able to forgive myself." Her voice became a bit wistful. "At least let me remain by your side while you try to get through to Marik."

The tattooed face man drew his lips in a line, going, "Hmm." He could see she was adamant about not letting him go on his own and had to admit she had a point. 'She is just as tenacious as I am.' A hint of a smile escaped before he looked serious again. "Fine, but remain behind me once I do get to him."

Keren gave a small nod, recalling Odion's instructions given before they had made their way to the duel tower. She also figured if he did fall, she could catch him if she was close enough. "Understood." Grabbing his hand, she led him towards the corrupted tombkeeper. His steps were wobbly, but with her holding his hand, he was able to relax.

Dark Marik peered down at the couple, grinning maliciously at them. He chuckled to himself, finding their entire exchange amusing. 'How very touching…a pity neither of them will see the light of day for much longer.' His grin turned into a sneer, mixed with displeasure, which was mostly directed at Odion. "You have no business being here, Odion."

Yami shot the possessed tombkeeper a hard look. "Let him speak!" he boomed with an authoritative air about him.

Ishizu watched Odion limp along with Keren, a worried look pasted on her features. She felt a sudden tightness in her chest and queasiness in her stomach, getting the impression that the evil entity was about to try something with them, judging from the devious glint in his eyes. "Be careful," she warned, her voice just above a whisper.

Dark Marik merely smirked at the ancient pharaoh's demand, but otherwise pretended it didn't faze him. His eyes remained on Odion and Keren, continuing, "We were all doing just fine without you. " His displeasure faded, turning into utter amusement upon noticing the tattooed face man's still-unsteady gait. "Just look at you. You're barely able to stand up, even with your pathetic girlfriend's assistance. How sad. But then again, both of you are weaklings who will meet an unfortunate end." He let out a diabolical laugh.

Odion drowned out the taunting as best as he could, instead continuing to make his way towards the demonic being. Truth be told, he still felt as crummy as he looked, but that was the least of his concerns at the moment. 'Focus and do not allow him to deter you. He shall soon see that you are also a force to be reckoned with.'

Keren's eyes narrowed at Dark Marik's disparaging remarks, ignoring the fear that arose inside of her. 'I am through allowing him to intimidate me.' She drew in a deep breath, ready to yell that her lover was far stronger than he thought but Odion glanced over at her and shook his head as if telling her to just ignore the sinister personality. He didn't want her to risk being assaulted. She hesitated as if she had doubts, which she did, but then nodded in understanding.

Joey had felt like a weight was lifted off his shoulders when he saw Odion up and about. On the other hand, he couldn't help frowning in concern at the battered state the Egyptian was still in. "Oh, poor guy, he's really hurtin'. I hope he'll be okay again soon. It's good he has Keren helping him, though. "

Tristan nodded in agreement. "Yeah, he's lucky to have a woman like her by his side." He then got a pensive expression on his face. 'I wonder when I'll find that special someone. I hope it'll be Serenity…she is such a great girl.' His face turned green with jealousy at the idea of her ending up with anyone else, namely Duke. Just as he was snapping out of his envious thoughts, Odion stumbled from fatigue, letting out a groan. Keren caught him before he could hit the ground.

Upon seeing this, Joey was about to rush over to the tattooed face young man to help him, but Ishizu placed a hand in front of him to stop him. Before he could question her, she said, "It's all right, Joey. Keren will be there if Odion needs any real assistance."

Joey looked doubtful. He didn't want Keren to be doing all the work as he could see it was overwhelming her, not to mention the strain it no doubt placed on her still-broken hand. He gulped and nodded, deciding Ishizu must have her reasons for stopping him. 'But if he falls again, I'm gonna help him no matter what she says.'

Once Keren had steadied her male companion on his feet somewhat, she released her hold on him, although she remained behind him, still intending to back him up. Exhaling a long, ragged breath, Odion rose to his full height, giving the corrupted tombkeeper the hardest look he could muster. "Release my master now!" he commanded in a no-nonsense tone.

Dark Marik sneered at Odion before letting out an amused chuckle, thoroughly tickled by his attempt to be fierce. "Your master is almost gone. I'm afraid you've come too late. I have taken his body and the shadows are about to take his soul. The Marik you once knew will soon be extinct, Odion. He'll no longer be able to hold me back." He pointed his rod at the older man. "And you are powerless to restrain me any longer."

Odion felt a sweatdrop forming on his forehead at the sight of the millennium rod as he knew how the demonic being planned to use it on him. He kept his expression stoic and bit back a gulp to hide his feeling of dread, hoping the sinister personality wouldn't pick up on it. Hearing the groans from the soul of his master's original self gave him a glimmer of hope. "That's not true. I have returned to ensure that your gentle spirit prevails."

Dark Marik gnashed his teeth, his nostrils flaring. "That's enough!" He emitted a burst of golden energy from his rod at the tattooed face man. Keren's eyes widened in fear at this. "Odion, look out!" Acting on impulse, she dashed in front of him, pushing him out of the way to take the blow instead. She cried out as she was thrown against the wall, shockwaves of pain shooting through her midback and aggravating her already tender shoulderblade. She slumped down, groaning out, "Please be careful," before losing consciousness.

Ishizu let out a slight gasp of horror. "Keren…" At the same time, though, she wasn't surprised by the older woman's maneuver, for she knew Keren was determined to protect Odion at all costs.

Vicki looked awestruck upon seeing Keren shield Odion from the millennium rod. It also warmed her heart as she realized how deep Keren's feelings were for the tattooed face man. 'By the same token, I most likely would have done the same.' She smiled a bit at how much she and Keren were alike, then her smile faded and was replaced with concern to see the young woman's limp, passed out form against the wall. 'Oh my, I hope she'll be all right. If she walks away without any bumps or bruises, I'll be amazed. Her back hit the wall mighty hard.' She gave a sympathetic wince.

Odion had been taken off guard by how quickly Keren acted to get him out of harm's way. His eyes widened and a look of horror crossed his features when she was hit instead. His heart felt like it was about to rip into pieces at the sound of her cry of pain, but seeing her limp form was almost too much for him to bear. "Keren!" He limped over to the young woman and stooped down, taking her in his arms. "Keren, please, open your eyes!" The only response was a light moan, which along with her body warmth somewhat reassured him she wasn't in dire straits. Cradling her a bit, he studied her face, feeling his lips curl up at her delicate features. 'Stop it! This is not the time to be admiring her beauty!' his conscience scolded him. He just waited for the voice to fade as he knew the reminder was needed.

The possessed tombkeeper let out a loud, cruel sounding laugh at the display before him, prompting his "brother" to glower at him. "How very touching. I must say I commend her for her heroic act. However, she was a fool to believe she could stand up to me, and now she must pay a heavy price." His lips spread into a malicious grin. "Now that she is out of my way, there is no escape for you, for you will suffer a miserable fate along with her."

Odion bit back another nervous gulp, for he knew Dark Marik spoke the truth. If the demonic being attacked again, there would be no one to protect him. 'Nevertheless, I must hold fast.' His eyes narrowed slightly at the insults and threats, although a part of him did have half a mind to chide Keren for her precarious behavior later. 'Never mind that now.'

Shaking his head to rid it of all the distractions, he gently rested the young woman down in a sitting position, propping her against the wall before staggering towards the bronze skinned young man once more. "Master Marik, fight the evil within! conquered your wicked side before and we can do it again."

Dark Marik gave an angry grimace as he once again pointed the rod at the tattooed face man. "Silence!" he roared, emitting another burst of golden energy. It sent Odion careening into the railing, causing him to yelp in pain. He brought up a hand to massage his temples a bit. Dark Marik unleashed another cruel laugh, reveling in the older man's distress.

Ishizu held back a cringe upon hearing the ear piercing laughter and her eyes filled with horror when she saw what the possessed tombkeeper had done. "Hold on!" Unable to listen to her own advice any longer, she rushed to Odion's side.

Odion proceeded to slowly rise to his feet, spotting Ishizu's frantic state from the corner of his eye. "I'm fine, Ishizu," he groaned. "But please look after Keren." Truth be told, he was still extremely sore, but he didn't want to make too big a deal of it. To his relief, the younger woman nodded, at both his claim and request. Whilst Ishizu made her way to his soulmate, he redirected his attention to the corrupted tombkeeper. "Please, Master," he pleaded, stumbling but using his hands to prevent the fall. "You have the power to stop your dark side." He stood upright, clenching his fist. "Remember, you're the one that created him, and you can destroy him!"

The original Marik's eyes widened and despite the majority of his face being hidden, he gave an open mouthed smile as the realization hit him. 'He's right! I can destroy him!' Suddenly he was filled with more determination than ever. With great fire and passion in his eyes, he disappeared from the shadows like an illusionist inspired by Houdini.

At this point Dark Marik looked as if his exposed veins would pop at any minute. "I've heard enough! Now take this!" He brought up his rod again, this time with the intention of powering it up in a way that was guaranteed to finish off his adversary. 'Die, Odion!' Before he could deliver the killing blow, the face of his weak half materialized and sharp, piercing pain shot through his head, causing him to clutch at it and let out a bloodcurdling howl. The friendship gang and Mai gazed around blinking in confusion as if to ask, 'Now what is his problem?'

Yugi cocked his head and let out a surprised gasp, looking as if he didn't know what to make of Dark Marik's sudden change in behavior. "Do you see what I see? Marik is freaking out up there."

Yami observed with a grim expression on his features, furrowing his brow. "Yes, I see." Under normal circumstances, he would have demanded an explanation from his foe, but then he noticed what was left of Marik's good side was gone. Whilst shooting another glance at Dark Marik, he recalled the last time a similar episode occurred. 'The evil force had not emerged as of yet, but Marik had been struggling to fight it.' His grim expression then became insightful. 'Of course! Marik's good side must be trying to regain control of his body!' A tiny smile formed on his lips at the fact that his new ally's fighting spirit had been rekindled.

Meanwhile, Dark Marik was still clutching his head. The pain was increasing by the second, yet he was more concerned about his loss of awareness than that. "What's going on here?" He let out another loud scream. Normal Marik felt a smug smirk trying to escape but he fought to keep a focused expression. "I'm regaining control of my life!"

Odion breathed out a sigh of relief that the fatal blow he had braced himself for never came. He had a feeling he would not have been able to avoid it in time. 'It would have been the end of me.' He smiled slightly, happy that his words of encouragement seemed to be taking effect. "Fight his evil with all your might, Master Marik! Let your tombkeeper's heritage give you strength. "

"Yes, I have seen much potential in you, so don't you dare let it go to waste!" piped up Vicki. She received some funny looks from Duke and Tristan, which she shrugged off, more or less expecting that kind of reaction.

Odion, on the other hand, smiled a bit at the fact that Vicki agreed with him and didn't seem to bear any grudge against his master. Although he had no idea what brought it on when he expected bitterness from the teen girl, he couldn't help being moved by her compassion. It suddenly struck him how pure hearted she was. 'Her support will do well to help Master Marik.'

The reformed young man felt his heart racing and his cheeks becoming hot, as well as butterflies fluttering around in his stomach at Vicki's words. 'Stop it! Now is not the time!' He gave a light nod, and with a grunt, he worked to push the evil force out of his body, using his family's love, his feelings of affection for Vicki, his desire to step back on the right path and his heritage as fuel. It made him feel invincible and able to block out Dark Marik's rants about how he refused to be overpowered by him. 'That's what you think, but I'm about to make you regret underestimating me.' After one final push, he finally had some room in his own body. The Eye of Horus appeared on Dark Marik's forehead and glowed, revealing that his hikari was now in control. "If you can hear me, Pharaoh, attack now!"

Yami looked horrified at such a request. Although Odion was present, he still had doubts about whether he should take that chance, with how powerful the dark force was. "But Marik, if I attack, you may-" he began to protest.

Marik gave the ancient pharaoh an earnest look, which said to just hear him out. "Please, Pharaoh. I have managed to take over, but I am not certain how long I will be able to remain in control. I need your help to banish my dark half forever. I'm truly sorry for everything I've done to you and your friends. I never should have allowed my hatred for my task to consume me, which was what created my dark half in the first place." His expression turned solemn. "I cannot say enough how much I regret the past. I'll do everything I can to make it up to those I've hurt."

Odion felt his heart becoming swell, just like during the moment his master had apologized to him while he was still comatose."Well spoken, Master. I knew you would utter those words one day." Of course, if he had to do it again, he would not have waited so long to reveal the truth about his dark side and who was truly responsible for the death of the senior Ishtar. He closed his eyes, lowering his head a bit. 'Master Marik, I hope you can forgive me for not revealing the truth to you sooner. I had wished to shield you, but instead I contributed to your suffering.' He then reopened his eyes, turning his attention back to the duel.

Marik's lavender coloured eyes became even more earnest as he continued, "Please, attack me now, Pharaoh! It's the only hope for my survival. There's no need to be afraid. Now that Odion is here, everything will be all right." He searched Yami's eyes, hoping he had convinced him and let out a light sigh of relief to see that the latter's usually intense gaze had softened a tad.

Yami was hesitant long enough for Marik's dark side to regain enough strength, enabling him to have semi control. "No! Don't listen to him!" he cried out, clearly furious that his weak half had somewhat succeeded in overpowering him. Marik's eyes hardened at his evil side's attempt to interfere. "Yes! You must attack me to save mankind, please! But hurry, I can't hold him back much longer!" He clenched a fist as he struggled to keep the dark force from pushing him out of his body.

Vicki bit her lip to keep from laughing at Dark Marik's "advice", given how serious the present situation was. Not to mention hearing Marik's good side apologize melted her heart. Her expression became thoughtful, then somewhat pensive. 'Marik…I know you can beat this thing. '

Yugi, despite finally understanding the reasoning behind normal Marik's pleas, still had a worried look on his face. He turned to Yami, who had that "my mind has been made up" expression, causing his worry to turn into horror as he knew what it meant. "Are you sure you want to go through with this? You're taking a huge risk, which we cannot afford. With how weak Marik's good side is, there's no guarantee he will survive the attack, even if Odion is here."

"Yugi, I understand your concern, but Marik is stronger than he appears to be. We must have faith in his strength and trust him."

Normal Marik's control slipped even more as he felt his dark half pushing him out of his body. "Pharaoh, please attack me now! It's the only way!"

'This is it.' Yami turned to his vessel, who gave a nod as if to say, 'Go ahead', before facing his opponent with his trademark intense gaze. "All right, Marik, here goes! I activate my Ragnarock card!"

Dark Marik was back in control with a look of horror on his features."No!"

"Yes! In order to activate it, I must remove all the monster cards in my hand, graveyard and deck from play! In exchange, it also allows me to remove every one of your monsters from play, releasing a great power. " As Yami discarded all the necessary cards, the spirits of the monsters materialized onto the field.

Dark Marik was literally trembling in fear, looking as if he were about to soil his pants. "N-No! You're making a big mistake!" He sneered when a ripple of gleeful laughter reached his ears. 'Let those fools laugh all they like. They won't be for much longer.'

Yami gave a smug grin. "I'm afraid it's too late! The magic of Ragnarock will be infused with the power of every one of my monsters, giving them the necessary strength to destroy you! Now Dark Magician and Dark Magician Girl, with the help of my entire army of monsters, unleash your incredible force!" The mages soared into the air, followed by the remainder of Yami's monsters.

The friendship gang stared agape as the spirit of the monsters soared past them to head towards the bronze-skinned young man, Kuriboh making a light noise. "Check it out, guys. It's Yugi's monsters on parade," stated Duke in an awed tone. All Mai could do was stand there and stare with her jaw slightly hanging open, for the display had left her speechless. 'Just when I think I've seen everything in Yugi's duels, he pulls off something like this. I guess I still have a lot to learn about him.'

Mokuba's eyes went wide, looking as if they would roll out and fall onto the ground. "Wow!" he exclaimed. He turned to his elder brother, who had a subdued expression on his features. "I've never seen anything like it." Despite the CEO's silence, Mokuba knew he was just as wowed and impressed as he was.

The creatures covered Dark Marik and Ra, nearly smothering the sinister personality in the process. His eyes doubled to the size of saucers, revealing his diluted veins. 'Of all the preposterous….I can barely move! I don't know how he came up with this idea, but it is utterly futile!' He let out a wheeze as if he were having an asthma attack, suppressing a coughing fit that was about to ensue. There was tightness in his chest, which he merely ignored since his discomfort was the least of his worries."Stop this at once! Call these creatures off right now! No one can stop the Winged Dragon of Ra!" Obelisk tightly gripped Ra with his enormous hand, causing the bird-like creature to howl in pain. Dark Marik squirmed and wriggled in the rival god's grasp, but to no avail. "Release me, right now!"

Yami felt a smirk at his foe's predicament threatening to escape. "It's pointless for you to resist! They have you trapped in their unbreakable grasp! "

The creatures lifted Ra and Dark Marik high into the air, tightening their grip on him even more. He was held so tightly that any effort to try and break free was pointless. "No!" the demonic being cried out, inwardly cursing the ancient pharaoh. He thought he heard more snickering, but he merely ignored it, although his blood was boiling.

Yami pointed his finger at Dark Marik. "Your reign of terror is finally over! The time has come for me to fulfill my destiny and rid the world of your evil once and for all!" As he made this declaration, the two spellcasters crossed their scepters, emitting a cluster of purplish energy spheres which formed a hexagram resembling the Spellbinding Circle. The balls of energy shone in Dark Marik's face, causing him to give another yelp. "May the magic of Ragnarock rid the field of your Winged Dragon of Ra, and swallow your dark side for all eternity." With that, the bird-like creature, along with Dark Marik was lifted into the hexagram, the sinister personality screaming the entire time. His cries were cut off by the massive explosion that ensued. Beams of light shone from the dark energy, making everyone cover their eyes to shield them from the glare.

Joey let out the deep breath he had been holding in, lazily letting his arms drop by his sides. "Phew! Now that's what I call intense."

"You can say that again," agreed Mai, tossing a strand of hair over her shoulder. "While Yugi's little stunt did throw me in for a loop, I have to admit I'm glad I got to see it."

"Ditto," piped up Vicki. She barely managed to suppress a shiver going down her spine.

Tristan let out a soft whistle. "Oh man! Yugi got rid of Ra!" he said in an astonished voice. He was so giddy with excitement he had the urge to do a happy dance, but opted to show some restraint.

"So does that mean he won?" questioned Tèa, anxiety finding its way into her voice and on her features. She felt her stomach doing flip flops as she hoped her friend had finally succeeded.

Joey shook his head lightly. "Not yet."

"Marik still has one life point left so the duel is not done," cut in Seto, after a long period of silence. 'I must admit, that was impressive. Well done, Yugi.'

Yami let out a light sigh of satisfaction and relief upon launching a successful attack for a change before side-eyeing his vessel. "Yugi, destroying the Winged Dragon of Ra should have eliminated Marik's dark side as well."

"That's good, but what about his good side?"

"We'll see soon enough." Yami could tell Yugi was very worried, but he had a feeling everything would be just fine. Even so, he kept a stone-faced expression whilst watching the smoke slowly dissipate.

Odion was also observing, his eyes filling with anxiety and knots forming in his stomach. To say the waiting was making him nervous would be an understatement. "Master Marik…" the tattooed face man mumbled.

Ishizu glanced up from where she had been trying to rouse Keren, her eyes growing misty. "Oh, brother…please tell me you're all right." Her voice was slightly wavery, for the thought of losing Marik to the shadows tore her heart into pieces.

Silence stretched across the arena as everyone waited to see whether only Dark Marik was destroyed, or if he had somehow taken his good side with him. The smoke cleared to reveal the original Marik Ishtar, clutching his chest and wincing.

Relief crossed the faces of Yugi and the ancient pharaoh whilst Ishizu and Odion let out slight gasps. "He made it!" Yami faced Marik with a serious, yet compassionate expression. "Marik, it's over. Your dark side has been banished forever."

Marik did a quick gaze around to make sure his surroundings hadn't changed before meeting Yami's gaze, ignoring the racing his heart did when his eyes had landed on Vicki. He proceeded to pant heavily, trying to catch his breath. Sweatdrops poured down his face and he felt a bit lightheaded, but at the same time, it was as if a large burden had been lifted. Also, seeing the kindness and compassion in the eyes of his former enemy made him even more remorseful for his transgressions.

Ishizu felt tears of joy forming in her eyes, but she blinked them back, not wanting to lose her composure too much. "You're safe! I'm so glad!" It took all she had not to run over to her younger sibling and throw her arms around him since the duel was still in progress. Not to mention Keren still had yet to awake and she didn't want to leave the older woman's side.

Tristan quickly eyed the cornsilk blonde young man, sizing him up. "We're sure this is his good side, right?" he asked, as if he still had trouble believing Ishizu's story.

"Well, his face isn't as weird now," commented Joey. "And I don't feel any creepy evil vibes coming from him."

Mai couldn't help snickering at Joey's first remark. "Joey, you're such a card." She had to admit, though, she did see some improvement, not to mention his aura was different, as it was one that made her feel a bit more relaxed. 'Still, it's gonna take some time for me to completely trust him.'

Joey shrugged. "Just sayin'."

'Now that's more like it.' Vicki had to pinch herself to keep from ogling at Marik and the butterflies from fluttering around in her stomach. Although she could tell the young man had truly changed for the better, she had made up in her mind to bond with him gradually this time around.

Odion gave a small smile, his heart swelling with pride. 'I knew Master Marik's will was strong enough to overcome the darkness in his heart. Now his inner light can truly shine.'

Marik gazed across the field at Keren, concern and worry etching on his features. 'I hope she'll be all right.' He made a mental note to check on her after the duel before once again facing the ancient pharaoh. "Pharaoh, there is one last task that you and I must complete. I still have one life point left," he reminded Yami with a flick of his cape.

Yugi drew his lip in a line in thought. "He's right. We're not done," he stated, just as Dark Marik's right eye appeared on the field amidst the shadows. He widened it in disbelief before blinking in horror and clenching his teeth, trembling. It was at that point he realized the severity of his predicament. "What's going on here? No, this can't be happening!" If anyone had told him he would be in the same situation his weak half was previously in, he would have laughed them to scorn. 'And now it seems to have come to fruition.'

"Marik's dark side has returned to the field." Yugi bit his lip, but kept a nonchalant expression on his face as he knew the evil entity no longer posed a threat.

"That's true, but now the tables have turned. Marik's good side is in control, and the evil counterpart has become the victim," said Yami a-matter-of-factually. There was a tinge of smugness in his voice.

Dark Marik's remaining eye filled with fear when he saw the fierce look on his hikari's features. Although he usually laughed it off, he knew this time he was under no position to do so. 'No! I refuse to accept this end.' Filled with desperation, the words poured out to convince his weak half. "You can't do this, Marik! Listen! We can still crush the pharaoh together! Do you remember how you've wasted your entire childhood serving this fool?! It's not too late to seize control of this duel. The power of the pharaoh can be yours! We'll rule the world together. Don't be a fool! You've come so far! Don't throw away everything you've worked for!"

Yami's violet eyes narrowed and he barely suppressed a low growl. He knew what Dark Marik was really trying to do and he didn't like it one bit. He was about to warn his new ally not to listen to his dark side, but he had a feeling it wouldn't be necessary. 'Do not worry. He will make the correct decision,' a voice reassured him. Drawing in a deep breath, he spoke gently as his eyes softened a bit. "Your move."

Marik met the ancient pharaoh's gaze with a solemn expression. "I'm sorry, Pharaoh. I cannot say that enough. I was destined to help you, but instead I turned my back. I can't change the past, but I can start over by embracing my destiny. I'm proud to be a tombkeeper, and I'm proud of my sister and my brother."

Odion swallowed a lump that was beginning to lodge in his throat, growing a bit misty-eyed at the word brother. It always touched his heart to know the cornsilk blonde considered him real family. "Thank you, sir." All of a sudden he heard a light groan, prompting him to see who it was. Relief crossed his features when he saw Keren's eyes fluttering open. A small smile forming on his lips, he dashed over to her, gently taking her from Ishizu's arms. "Keren, are you all right?"

"Yes, you had been unconscious for awhile," added Ishizu.

Keren relaxed in her lover's strong arms, giving him a weak smile. "My shoulderblade and back aches, but I will be fine, don't worry," she answered a bit breathlessly.

Odion returned her smile, doing well to hide the worry that arose in him upon hearing of her discomfort. "I am pleased to hear that. I will seek help for you after the duel. "

Keren gave a light nod to show she was fine with it, then lifted her eyes slightly, as she remembered the duel had still been in progress when she passed out. "Oh, that's right! What's going on now?"

"The pharaoh has helped my master's gentle spirit to return, but there is still a miniscule portion of his dark side that must be extinguished," came the response.

Keren knitted her eyebrows together as she realized just how long she had been out of it. "I see. Well, that is excellent news."

"Indeed." Odion carefully swept his female companion into his arms bridal style. She wrapped her arms around his shoulders and rested her head on his chest.

Marik averted his eyes across the field, looking relieved to see that Keren was finally awake. He smiled lightly at the sight of his elder brother holding her in his arms. 'I am glad she entered our lives so long ago.' Locking his eyes with the ancient pharaoh's again, he continued, "We have waited 3000 years for your return. Now you're here. The time has come for me to fulfill my destiny by letting you fulfill yours. It is the least I can do to repay you for granting me this chance."

Dark Marik's remaining eye bulged out in horror. He did not like what he was hearing in the least. "You can't do this!"

A sneer formed on Marik's lips as he began to allow his hand to hover over his deck. "Oh, but I can, and I will. The secret of the pharaoh's power is written on my back in an ancient text. In order to unlock it, the pharaoh must possess all three Egyptian God cards."

"You're making a huge mistake!" the sinister personality protested.

"I beg to differ. My only mistake was surrendering to your clutches," retorted Marik, closing his eyes and continuing to lower his hand over his deck.

"What are you doing?!"

"I'm honoring the Ishtar name, by conceding defeat." The tan-skinned young man rested his hand on top of his deck.

Yami let out a small gasp upon realizing what Marik's intention was. "Of course! As soon as his life points hit zero, his evil side will vanish into the Shadow Realm."

Dark Marik's eye grew pinched. If he still had his ears, it would have looked as if smoke was about to arise from them. "If you do this, you'll be sorry! You need me!"

Marik reopened his eyes and turned to face the remains of his dark side with a glare whilst placing his hand more firmly on the deck. "I have heard enough! Now be gone! I surrender this duel to the pharaoh!" With that, his life points dropped to zero.

"No!" the sinister personality cried out as he disappeared into nothingness, which destroyed him forever.

Marik turned back to face the pharaoh with a tiny smile on his lips. "It's finally over, my pharaoh," he said in a somewhat low voice. Despite still feeling slightly breathless, his chest was even lighter.

"Yes, and the darkness has lifted from your heart." The blanket of fog disappeared, as did the monsters. Yugi's soul floated to the ground, freed from the dark energy ribbons that bound his wrists. Yami smiled at this. "You're safe now."

Ishizu couldn't stop the smile from forming on her lips as she was filled with exhilaration. "Marik is finally free from the evil that controlled him for so long. My pharaoh, thank you. You saved mankind." She had a strong urge to hug Yami, but she didn't want to make him feel uncomfortable.

"We did," corrected the ancient pharaoh. "I would not have done it had it not been for all of you." He smiled when Marik nodded in agreement.

Mokuba got an excited grin on his face. Seto stood still, but the friendship gang instantly erupted into loud cheers, the boys glomping each other and the girls jumping up and down. Mai pumped her fist in triumph, going, "Hallelujah!" It was barely heard over the boys' discordant noises.

Joey laughed loudly as he marched over to the ancient pharaoh. "The way every monster in your deck showed up, that was classic! Up high, pal!" He placed a hand up, and Yami, barely suppressing a chuckle at his friend's excitement, slapped it in a high five. "That was truly your best work!" Joey was sure Mai was giving him an amused look, but he was too caught up in the moment to care.

Ishizu turned to her brother with a tender look in her eyes. They were beginning to fill with tears, which she blinked back. "Marik…"

Marik met his sister's gaze, his penitence becoming so overwhelming it was all he could do not to get down on his knees. "Ishizu…I'm so sorry."

Ishizu shook her head lightly as if to say no apology was necessary. "All that matters is you have returned to the way you were, my brother. You are one step away from fulfilling your destiny and ending the mission of the tombkeepers."

Marik's face lit up like a Christmas tree. "Sister! Does this mean we will eventually be able to start over and build a new life for ourselves?"

"Yes," answered the young woman with a smile. "After all, we are not only a clan, but family as well." Odion got choked up at being called family. It touched his heart to finally feel the acceptance he had longed for. A look of surprise appeared on Keren's face as she wondered if Ishizu was also including her.

"I've missed you immensely." Ishizu then opened her arms for the cornsilk blonde to step into.

"So have I." Marik hesitated at first, but then strode over to his sister, wrapping his arms around her in a warm, tight embrace, which made the girls go "Awwww."

Seto kept a nonchalant expression on his face to mask the mild discomfort that threatened to rear its head. He cleared his throat, prompting the two siblings to end their embrace and them, along with everyone else to face him. "Sorry to interrupt, but as the host of the tournament, it is only right that I congratulate you, Yugi, for disposing of that wacko. Even though you only won the duel due to Marik's forfeit."

All Yami did was smile in response as he knew his rival had his own way of encouraging and praising others. 'Actually, if he hadn't entrusted his card to me, I would have lost the match right away.'

Mokuba inwardly rolled his eyes at his brother's poor congratulations attempt before reaching a hand out. "Nice duel. You really made an awesome comeback, and you are a hero."

Yami gave the young boy a warm smile. "Thank you, Mokuba."

Ishizu's expression turned serious as she placed a hand on her brother's shoulder. He turned to her, preparing to question her. "Marik, it's time."

Knowing what the young woman was referring to, Marik nodded to her before approaching the ancient pharaoh. "Pharaoh, there is something I must give to you."

Yami furrowed his brow in curiosity. "And what is that?"

"Something that has been rightfully yours from the beginning." The bronze skinned young man flipped through his deck and pulled out his Egyptian God card, handing it to Yami. "Take this, my rarest card. And remember, you're going to need this card, Pharaoh."

"Thank you," said Yami as he accepted the card. He peered down at it with a look of intrigue. 'The Winged Dragon of Ra. I now have all three Egyptian God cards. He's right, I'll need them if I am to unlock my memories and powers.' He slipped it into his deck amongst the bottom of the pile.

Joey had an "I'm happy for you" type of grin plastered on his face, only for it to fade when a horrifying thought occurred to him. 'He wouldn't have had time to get rid of the fake one if he just came back...and besides, who knows how many of them he has in his deck?' His grin was then replaced by a look of suspicion. "That had better not be the fake one!" he called out.

"Joey!" balked Tèa and Mokuba. Ordinarily, Mai would have whacked the blonde in the head, but she decided not to since she wasn't ready yet to trust Marik, either, even if his aura was different.

Marik merely ignored the remark, as it was clear Joey was still wary of him, and truth be told, he expected it. 'It's best to give him time to come around.' He cleared his throat to rid it of the slight tickling feeling. "Pharaoh, I have one more task before my mission is complete. Observe the secret to the pharaoh's power." He lifted his shirt, turning around so his back was facing Yami. Vicki had to look away so she wouldn't stare too much.

Tèa's eyes glazed over as she eyed the carvings. "All right, things are getting really complicated here."

"That's an understatement," Joey remarked dryly.

"I have to agree," said Mai. She shook her head. 'All this history stuff…I'm seriously going to need some therapy after this tournament.'

"These markings were passed down from generation to generation for three thousand years," explained the reformed tombkeeper. Vicki was still looking at her feet, but kept her ears open, for she was genuinely interested.

Ishizu saw the perplexed expressions and knew a more thorough explanation was in order. She took a deep breath and addressed the gang with her eyes, causing them to put on their most attentive looks. Kaiba huffed and pretended to be interested in the elevator door. "We were taught that when the pharaoh saved the world from destruction, he wiped his own memory clean. However, he knew one day he would return and he would need his memory back to combat a new evil that will arise. Now that he holds the three Egyptian God cards, all he must do is read the words on Marik's back. He's so close."

Yami nodded in understanding before directing his attention towards the text on the young man's back. He was about to peruse it when Joey asked him incredulously, "Yuge, can you really read that chicken scratch?"

The ancient pharaoh paused to read the first few words before answering the blonde's question. "I can." He didn't have to turn around to know his friend's eyes were bugging out. As he continued to read the markings, an image of the stone tablet bore into his violet eyes, at which he let out a gasp. 'I shall take another trip to the museum after this tournament ends.'

"There is something else I must give to you, Pharaoh. Please take this. The millennium rod belongs with you, where it won't cause any more harm. And the millennium ring is safest with you," said Marik, holding out the items.

Yami smiled gratefully at the young man as he took the rod and ring from his outstretched hand. "Thank you."

At this point, Seto's eyes were flashing as he had heard enough. "If you geeks are done celebrating, the final duel will start in forty five minutes. It would be in your best interest to use that time wisely and prepare."

The smile on Yami's lips widened, but Joey nearly jumped a mile and Tristan clutched his chest as if he were having a heart attack. "Don't you think we already know that?!" yelled Joey, clearly exasperated with the CEO for the rude interruption.

"Yeah, did you have to sneak up on us?" Tristan chimed in.

Seto let out a huff. "Not my problem if you were far from reality. However, if you are wise, you would prepare, unless you wish to be disqualified." His eyes were on Joey and Yami as he made the last statement, but mostly on Joey.

Joey cut his eyes at the business tycoon. "Yeah, yeah, whatever. I've been ready."

"Hmph." Seto walked away from the group, the tail of his trenchcoat flapping behind him and a sneer threatening to escape his lips. Mokuba spotted his brother leaving and broke into a sprint to catch up with him. "Seto, wait up!"

Joey watched the two boys leave for a brief spell before letting out a huge sigh of frustration. "I swear, that sore loser sure knows how to spoil the mood."

"I know right?" agreed Tristan. "It's like he's trying to make us miserable because he's still pissed about losing to Ishizu."

"Yeah, well, that's not gonna fly here, so he did the smart thing when he left," said Joey. He then turned to face Yami, his face relaxing into a grin. "I guess it's you and me now, buddy."

Yami gave the blonde a smile. "Yes. I have been looking forward to our duel for quite some time."

"Same here, bro. Every duel I've fought has prepared me for it."

"Likewise."

Mai, who had been relatively quiet, gave the two duelists a look. "I hope you boys don't hold back just because of how tight you are with each other."

Joey tittered nervously under his female companion's hard stare, bringing up a hand to wipe a sweatdrop from his forehead. "Nah, Mai, that's not going to happen."

"That's right, we intend to push each other to the very limit, while helping each other," added the ancient pharaoh.

Mai gave Joey and Yami a wry smile. "Hmm. In that case, I look forward to seeing it."

"Trust me, you'll love it."

Ishizu smiled as she listened to the chatter amongst the friendship gang. It was quite moving for her to see the close bond they shared, and inwardly she was smiling at having it with Marik again. She turned to face her brothers, asking them, "Do you two plan to observe the final duel?"

Odion frowned in thought. He wasn't sure how long it would take to get medical attention for Keren and he intended to remain by her side, unless the doctor said otherwise. "As much as I would like to, I must seek help for Keren first, to make sure no detrimental damage was done."

Ishizu nodded. "I understand. She does need medical assistance. And you, Marik?"

"I do intend to," answered the reformed tombkeeper. He held back a wince at the tightness that flared in his chest, which he experienced whenever something amiss had occurred or was taking place. "However, I have a feeling there is something that desperately needs my attention." Turning away from his elder siblings, he looked around to see if Vicki was still there. Fortunately, she had not left, although she was talking to Serenity and Tèa about something. 'It would be impolite of me to interrupt their conversation, but this is important.' He peered over his shoulder at Ishizu and Odion. "I'll be back."

Odion nodded. "All right."

Marik wandered over to the three teen girls, all the while mentally piecing all he wished to say together. They heard the footsteps and ceased their conversation, turning to see who it was. "Oh, it's Marik," stated Tèa. There was a touch of mild surprise in her voice.

Marik searched the girls' faces a bit. Their eyes weren't overly friendly, but he couldn't call them hostile, either. He took a deep breath. "Forgive the interruption, but there is something I wanted to say to Vicki, if that is all right."

Vicki gave a curious frown. "Oh? What is it?"

It took everything Marik had to keep his eyes locked with Vicki's, as he knew it was not the time to be intoxicated by the beauty he saw in her. "Your words of motivation helped to give me the strength I needed to vanquish the darkness within me, and for that, I thank you."

Vicki smiled warmly at the cornsilk blonde. "Think nothing of it, lad. I didn't want to see your potential wasted."

"I know. I am so grateful for this second chance, more than I can ever express." Marik paused, as if debating on whether he should say anything else, but the words he wished to say escaped him. 'Curses! What is the matter with me?' He gulped, then exhaled a breath through his nostrils. "I will leave you girls now. Once again, thank you." He walked away from the girls to rejoin his siblings, who had not moved from their spot. "Let's go."

The two elder siblings complied, making their way to the elevator with Marik slightly ahead of them. Odion was much steadier on his feet this time around, but with Keren still in his arms, he still took his time.

"I trust it went well?" Ishizu asked Marik.

"Yes, as well as it could have under the circumstances," answered the bronze skinned young man as he pushed the button for the elevator door to open. "I didn't want to say anything that would create unnecessary tension."

Ishizu had half a mind to ask her younger brother about the nature of his discussion with Vicki, but decided against it. 'It's none of my concern, and I trust him not to say anything untoward.' Instead she said,"That's a smart move on your part. I'm glad things went smoothly."

"So am I." The elevator came, and all three Ishtars stepped inside, the door closing.

Ryou was still comatose in his bed, although the bleeding from the severe wound on his arm had long ceased. The evil spirit of the ring materialized, sitting on the edge of the bed and sneering evilly as he peered down at the teen boy. 'Such a weak, pathetic mortal. Well, sleepy head, it is time to rise and shine. You have had more than enough time to recuperate from your injury.' He took over the young man's body, causing him to open his eyes with a jolt.

He blinked several times and turned his head from side to side on his pillow to get a feeling of his surroundings. A frown made its way onto his delicate features. 'All right, I know I'm in my bedroom, but the question is, how did I end up here? The last thing I remember was being on the dueling arena, with Yugi holding me up. Speaking of which…'

Groaning, he pulled himself into a sitting position, wincing at the pain that shot through his bicep. 'Oh blast, I nearly forgot about my arm.' One thing he had noticed, though, was that it didn't hurt quite as much, which he couldn't help but feel relieved about. He waited for the throbbing to fade away, then ran a hand down his face. All of a sudden his stomach began to rumble loudly. His cheeks turned as red as a tomato and he let out an embarrassed laugh. 'Oh dear...I had better feed it at once…after all, I haven't eaten in hours, and I am feeling famished.'

Throwing the covers back, Ryou swung his legs over to the left side of the bed, pushing his feet into his sneakers and bending over to tie the shoelaces. He sprang to his feet and walked over to the exit, pushing the button to open the door. Once it slid open, he walked out of the room, heading towards the blimp's kitchen to silence his stomach's demands for food.

(Marik's bedroom)

Marik had left his elder siblings to take care of their affairs, heading for his room. As he made his way there, the tight feeling in his chest increased, followed by queasiness in his stomach, so he knew something was up. He stopped in front of his room and took out his key, using it to unlock the door. He inhaled a deep breath as he waited for the door to open, ignoring the pounding of his heart. The door slid open, and he exhaled before entering.

His eyes doubled to twice their size upon seeing the destruction to the room. With the holes in the wall, the table turned over and shards littering the floor, it looked like a typhoon had passed through it. All he could do is let his eyes flit around frantically because it felt like his voice had been stolen from him.

After what seemed like an eternity of stunned silence, the young man placed his hands over his head and let out a loud scream. He then fell silent, lest someone would come to check on him. His shock faded and he clenched his fists when the realization of who the likely culprit was hit him. 'My dark side must have done this…one good thing is he's gone forever now.' Still, it did little to assuage his anger since the damage was done.

It was especially infuriating because whatever his dark side did, he had to take the knack for. Not to mention vandalizing of property now horrified him. A pang of fear coursed through him when he considered how Seto would react. 'To say he'll be furious is an understatement. The fact that it was done by my dark side and not me won't be enough to spare me his wrath. While I do not particularly care for him very much, his anger is well justified.' Besides simply returning the table to its proper position, he knew the shards could easily be swept up, but he wasn't sure how to go about patching up the wall. 'To pay for such extensive damage would take most of the money I currently have on hand, if not more. Oh well...I suppose I had better get to work repairing what I can.'

With a heavy sigh, the reformed tombkeeper carefully grabbed two ends of the table, carefully turning it over. Luckily, none of its legs had been broken, so it stayed upright. He pushed the chair underneath it. He went to check the closet to see if there were any cleaning supplies. All he spotted was a broom and dust pan, but he was mentally screaming in joy since they were what he needed. He removed the items, shut the closet door and got to work sweeping up the shards. As he prepared to sweep them into the dust pan, the gong sounded. 'Huh?' He stopped and listened.

"Attention all duelists! The final duel will begin in fifteen minutes! Participants and spectators, please make your way to the duel tower this instant!" Roland's voice boomed.

Marik frowned in thought. As much as he wanted to go watch the duel, he knew he couldn't very well do that with the room in its current state. 'Fortunately, the sweeping is nearly complete. Perhaps I can observe afterwards. After all, there is only so much I can do.' He massaged his temples and then continued his clean up task.

After eating a small snack and using what little time there was left to prepare, Joey strolled out of his room as soon as he heard the announcement. Tristan and Duke were right behind him. Yami happened to be leaving his room that same moment. Joey grinned when he spotted him, and ran up to him. "Hey Yuge! Ready to do this?" His grin grew wider.

Yami chuckled a bit. "I am. I trust you are as well?"

"You bet! Now let's hit the show on the road!" Joey was so giddy with excitement it was all he could do not to start dancing.

The ancient pharaoh chuckled again. "Yes, let us go." He and Joey proceeded to walk down the corridor, Tristan and Duke quickening their pace so they wouldn't be left behind. They were about halfway down the corridor when they heard a female voice calling after them, "Hey guys, wait up!"

The gentlemen slowed down a bit and glanced over their shoulders to see Tèa. She was accompanied by Serenity, Mai and Vicki. They stopped in their tracks so the girls could catch up with them. Once they had, everyone continued walking down the halls together. A bit of small talk took place, but otherwise they were lost in their own thoughts.

It wasn't long before the gang was approaching the blimp's exit, which brought them back to reality. They disembarked the vessel, climbing down the steps and making their way to the duel tower's elevators.

Roland stood on top of the duel tower on the sidelines with his arms folded, patiently waiting for Yami and Joey to arrive. He was accompanied by the Kaiba brothers, who were standing just several feet away from him.

The middle-aged gentleman glanced at his watch to see how the two duelists were doing on time. There were ten minutes remaining. Just as he was about to report this to his boss, the young CEO asked, "What time is it, Roland?"

"Five minutes have passed, sir," came the response.

Seto pressed his lips together, drawing them in a thin line. "Hmmm." He didn't like that his two rivals were cutting it so close, especially Yami. "If they refuse to show up within the time limit, disqualify them."

"Understood."

Seto got a look of displeasure on his features at the thought of Yami risking disqualification. Joey, he more or less expected it from, but not the ancient pharaoh. 'With how far Yugi has come in this tournament, he'd be a fool to back out this time. Unless…' His ice blue eyes hardened as a possibility suddenly hit him. 'He had better not be stalling because he doesn't want to face the underdog. He has allowed that small fry to pull him down to his intermediate level.' He scowled for a bit, then his scowl changed into a devious grin when he thought of another possibility. 'Perhaps if Yugi shows up, and Wheeler doesn't, I can disqualify Wheeler. Of course it would be almost a pity for him to advance so far, only to lose in disgrace.' He heaved a loud sigh as he tapped his right foot and glanced at his watch.

Just as the CEO thought he would go ballistic from all the waiting, the elevator's gong sounded. Out stepped Yami and Joey, along with Tristan and Duke. Seto sneered at the two remaining finalists, whilst Tristan and Duke made their way to the other side. "Well, well, look who finally decided to show up. I thought I was going to have to disqualify someone, or both of you."

Yami's lips curled up slightly and he raised an eyebrow. "Well then, you are sorely mistaken. I'm surprised at you, Kaiba. I thought you knew by now that I would never attempt to escape my fate."

Seto was about to scoff when Joey chimed in, "Yeah, we're no cowards!"

The former world champion shot Joey a nasty smirk. "That may be, but your lucky streak is about to end here and now. The fact that it has lasted this long is beyond me. "

The blonde faced Seto indignantly, clenching his fist to calm the urge to rush forward and punch his teeth out. "If you could take your scrawny nose out of the air for one second, I came close to beating him in Duelist Kingdom…so close I came in second."

Seto laughed a huffy sound. "Runner up isn't good enough for me. And besides, you will fall before his 3 Egyptian God monsters."

Joey gritted his teeth, his clenched fist proceeding to tremble. "Why you…." He was ready to spew every expletive under the sun at the business tycoon, but Yami placed a hand on his shoulder.

"Calm down, Joey," advised the ancient pharaoh. "He's just trying to distract you from our duel. You mustn't give him that opportunity."

The hand on the shoulder, along with Yami's voice of reason was enough to calm the blonde down some. "You're right," he admitted begrudgingly.

Yami directed his attention towards Seto with a purposeful look on his face. "As for you, Kaiba, I'll have you know that I intend to duel Joey with honor, so I wouldn't get my hopes up too high if I were you."

Seto snarled under his breath, obviously displeased by his rival's smart aleck remark, but just said, "Whatever. Let's proceed."

Roland nodded in understanding. As if on cue, he raised an arm upward and declared, "The final duel of Battle City is about to begin! Gentlemen, please take your places on the playing field and shuffle your opponent's deck."

"You got it!" Joey and Yami climbed up the steps to make their way onto the dueling arena. They handed each other their dueling decks and began to shuffle them. As they were doing that, the elevator gong rang again. The door opened to reveal the girls strolling out and joining the boys. Yami glanced up briefly to give them a nod of acknowledgement, then went back to shuffling his best friend's deck.

At first, Duke had seemed like he was psyched to watch the duel since he was watching two of the best, but he now looked as if he were attempting an algebra problem he didn't understand at all.

Tristan side-eyed the ebony-haired young man, giving him a funny look. "What gives, dude? Why the long face?"

Duke was tempted to say never mind, but he could tell Tristan was genuinely concerned and not trying to pick a fight. "I'm just unsure which one of them we should cheer for. I mean, they're both

good friends. "

Tristan looked thoughtful, as he knew Duke hadn't been around until after Duelist Kingdom. "Yeah, you do have a point there."

"Well, when it's like that, you don't have to cheer for either one of them. Just encourage both of them to do their best," spoke up Vicki.

Duke scrunched up his brow in thought. "Yeah, that could work. The problem is, though, one of them still has to lose. But I guess either or is fine."

Tèa was silent and appeared serious. At first, she had hated the idea of two good friends turning into rivals in the heat of battle and it was difficult for her to watch her friends' match in Duelist Kingdom, but she had managed to get through it. 'I think it will be easier for me this time, though. After all, they aren't the type to let competition get ugly. '

After the two duelists were done shuffling the cards, they returned the decks and took their places on the dueling arena, facing each other with an intense gaze.

Yami's gaze softened a smidge, his lips quirking up a bit. "I am grateful for this opportunity to duel with you once again, Joey."

Joey shot his friend an exited grin. "Right back at you, man! It feels like Duelist Kingdom all over again. Except this time it's different. I see it as a test to determine how much of a True Duelist I've become, and so it means the most."

"Yes, I can see how hard you have worked to prepare."

Joey's honey brown eyes turned a bit fiery, although he still wore the grin on his face. "That's right. You've taught me everything you know about Duel Monsters, and I have grown as a duelist since Pegasus' tournament, so look out!"

Yami gave a cocky grin. "Yes, you most certainly have improved. We'll see just how much you've learned soon enough. However, you are mistaken on one thing. I have not taught you quite everything."

Joey's grin faltered slightly. "Oh yeah? Well I still plan to give you a hard battle."

"I'm counting on that."

"Duel!" both gentlemen belted out simultaneously. They each drew five cards from their decks, holding them up to glance at.

Serenity's face lit up like a glow-in-the-dark toy. She remembered when her brother had to win the money for her operation, and here she was, witnessing a replay of the match that made it possible. She placed her hands by her mouth and yelled out, "Go Joey! Do your best!"

"Remember, don't hold back, either of you!" blared out Mai.

Seto had his arms folded tightly across his chest with a pensive expression on his face. He lifted an eye as Mai's reminder rang in his ear. 'Mai is right. Yugi had better not hold back or let that small fry duelist beat him. I'm the only one who deserves that honor.'

Joey peered over his shoulder to smile at his lady friend. "Don't worry. We won't." He redirected his attention to his friend and opponent with his best game face on. "All right, pal! I'll let you go first."

Yami gave the blonde a wry smile. "I appreciate your generosity. I'll have to return the favor." His smile faded and he put his game face on. "Here I go!" He pulled a card from his deck, taking a peek at it. 'Neither of us can attack on the first turn, but it would be a good idea to play smart from the beginning.' He glanced back up to meet Joey's gaze. "I play Beta the Magnet Warrior in defense mode!" (1200 def) The yellow and white themed magnetic creature emerged onto the field, crouched down. "I'll also set two cards face down. That ends my turn."

"Good move! It's my turn now! I draw!" Joey pulled a card from his deck, holding it up to glance at. One corner of his lips curled up slightly. 'Great card. Perfect, actually, seeing as how I can't attack on my first turn and I can't attack without making a sacrifice anyway. But it would be best to hold onto him for now.' His smile faded as he faced his friend. "I play Rocket Warrior in defense mode!" (1300 def) The miniature half-humanoid half rocket materialized. "I also place two cards face down. That's all."

Yami smirked slightly. "I see you really have learned. Well, how will you fare against this move?" His smirk widened a bit when a bit of worry crossed the blonde's features. He pulled a card from his deck. "I summon Queen's Knight in attack mode! " (1500 attk) The female monarch appeared, holding out her sword. "I also switch my Beta from defense to attack mode!" (1700 attk) The magnetic creature rose, thrusting out its hands. "Destroy his Rocket Warrior now!" Beta emitted energy from its hands, reducing the rocket monster to pixel. Joey covered his face to shield it from the gust of winds. "Now my Queen, attack Joey's life points directly!" The blonde haired knight lunged at Joey, ready to slash him in the shoulder.

Serenity looked scared for her brother. "No, Joey!"

"Do something, man!" Tristan called out.

But Joey's lips curled into a sly grin. "Not quite!"

Yami got a stunned expression on his face. "What?"

"Go, face down card, Scapegoat!" The four bright colored hairballs with ram horns materialized.

Yami let out a soft grunt." Oh no."

"Yup! I'm sure you know what that means. My life points are safe." The queen warrior slashed one of the tokens, leaving only three. "How's that for a countermove?"

The ancient pharaoh shot his best friend a smile of approval. "Very good. I hope you can keep it up."

Joey smiled back. "I plan to. It's my turn now. Draw!" He pulled a card from his deck, his smile growing. 'Magic Arm Shield...this can come in handy later.' He added the card to his hand. "I play Panther Warrior in attack mode!" (2000 attk) The humanoid shaped feline creature emerged, raising its sword and releasing a feral growl. He grinned when he saw his friend looking grim. "Okay, first I sacrifice one of my Scapegoats!" Another of the hairballs disappeared, and there was now two remaining. "Now Panther Warrior, attack his Beta the Magnet Warrior!" The feline beast dove forward, slashing the magnet creature in half and reducing it to ribbons. Yami lost 300 life points from the attack, taking him down to three thousand, seven hundred. "I'll play another card face down. Your move."

Yami's grim look faded, turning into a reserved smile. "You are playing very well so far. I can see how much more astute you've become." His smile was then replaced by a serious expression. "However, I wouldn't get too cocky. I have some surprises for you in this duel."

"I thought you did, and I look forward to seeing them," remarked Joey, smirking a little. "I also have a few of my own."

"Is that so?" It was Yami's turn to smirk once more. "Well, I am sure they will be worth the wait."

Joey closed his eyes as if entering a meditative state. 'I'm off to a pretty decent start so far, if I do say so myself. However, I'm gonna have to plan a strategy fast and take my game up a notch if I am to stand a chance. Time will tell if my best moves will be enough. No matter what happens, though, I can be happy knowing I did my best and fought an awesome duel.'
