Chapter Fifty: Blunder

"Isn't this exciting?"
Not quite the word I would use to describe my current situation, but who was I to dampen Izanami's spirits?
Sesshoumaru, to my amusement, looked absolutely appalled. I was sure he was trying to understand how 'exciting' could be used to portray Kagutsuchi.
The three of us stood hidden in what would most accurately be described as a broom closet. Izanami and I were pressed close to the shoji screen door, peering through a thin gap, and working hard not to give away our location. Sesshoumaru stood to my left, possibly wondering how he had gotten wrapped up in all this nonsense.
In the room beyond our little closet sat Rin and Kagutsuchi, the former looking faint, and the latter looking extremely uneasy. Steaming tea, along with heavy silence, rested between them.
They were getting nowhere.
"This is ridiculous," I muttered harshly. "What were you hoping to accomplish by forcing them into a room alone together?"
"Patience, my dear," Izanami chastised softly. "This silence cannot last forever."
And, of course, she was right.
To my astonishment, it was Rin who attempted to make conversation. "It has been a long time since we last saw each other, Kagutsuchi-san. I hope you are doing well?"
He turned, leveling her with his dark gaze, and I suppressed a giggle as I watched a pink flush stain Rin's cheeks. "As well as can be expected, Yukiko-dono."
She nodded, and I saw how his formal address had taken the wind right out of her sails. "Yes, it must have been very shocking to hear of your mother's resurrection, and―"
"What?"
Oh no . . .
Izanami, though startled, took the revelation in stride. "I hadn't thought he'd find out so soon, but . . . I suppose it can't be helped." Straightening, she smoothed her hands over her robes and smiled. "Now is as good a time as any."
And with that, she flung the shoji door open and swept into the room, her pearly-white clothes swirling around her.
"Hello, Kagutsuchi."
