Changes Sequel – III. War + Epilogue – Epilogue Part 28

PRESENT

A heavy sigh escaped his lips as he watched an elderly couple eating in silence at a table to his far right. Their lips sported a content smile, they oozed happiness. Quite the contrary he was feeling now. He turned his head to look at the handsome face in front of him, brows knitted and eyes reading him in silence. He dreaded tomorrow. He really did.

"Your broadcasting, sweetness," Akihiro said, using the napkin to clean his full lips, then folding it neatly before he took a sip of his red wine. The food had been good. Of course it had. In the end, he had chosen the restaurant, knowing how good their food and wine was. He hated cheap food. Hence, why they were eating the opposite right now.

"I know," Jean-Paul muttered, his blue eyes watching his thumb stroking up and down his wine glass thoughtfully. Yes, he really dreaded tomorrow. "I don't want to go," he finally said after a long silence, realizing that dessert had already been served. His eyes looked at the small cake, remembering that it was something with white truffle and hoped it was worth the money. Slowly, he began to dig in to his food and let it melt on his tongue.

"I know."

"Three months…"

"You can make a change."

"Do I want to? What did they ever do for me?" His eyes were back on the elderly couple, the man holding the coat for his wife, and he sighed. "It's just… We haven't been apart for that long."

Akihiro nodded, his dark eyes on him. "I know."

"And I'll get cranky when I'm not happy, which means I won't be able to focus on my job as Olympic ambassador."

Akihiro huffed, finishing off his wine. "You mean you'll become a pain on the ass, darling. Don't sugarcoat it." He smirked when Jean-Paul gave him a dark look. "See? That's what I mean."

Jean-Paul huffed, using the napkin and letting it fall unceremoniously on the plate. "Stones and glass houses, baby. Just saying." They held each other's gazes for a while before he sighed heavily. "It still sucks to be gone for that long…"

"What's the first destination?" Akihiro asked to get his partner's thoughts off the topic for a while.

"Toronto. I'll meet with the COC and press first. Then it's Utah, London, Bern, Vienna, Munich and so on." Jean-Paul sighed heavily while Akihiro waved for the waitress, ignoring her way too happy smile, and demanded the bill. "I'll be happy when it's Sydney, Tokyo and lastly finally Beijing. I don't get why just Beijing isn't enough. They won the race of the venue against Kazakstan, so why a fucking ambassador world tour just to tell them 'Hey, mutants should be part of Olympic teams too!'?"

Akihiro paid and put his wallet away. "Because too many people are still too dumb to realize this?" he asked sarcastically and got up, a move that Jean-Paul mimicked. "I'm thinking about meeting up with you when you finally hit Japan. Haven't been there in a while."

"Please do that!" Jean-Paul begged and took his coat when offered. "And while you are already at it join me for the rest of the tour."

Akihiro laughed and put on his own coat. "You know I can't do that. Someone has to take care of the kids." He cupped Jean-Paul's jaw with one hand and pulled him into a brief kiss. As someone cleared his throat next to them Akihiro was ready to snap at the person as he realized it was Tony, the chef of the restaurant. "What is it, Tony?"

"I'm terribly sorry to interrupt, sir, but I was just informed that reporters are waiting on the outside. If you wish I can take your car to the back entrance. I am very sorry for the inconvenience!"

Jean-Paul and Akihiro exchanged a look, the speedster shrugging. "It's your call," he said since up to now he hadn't gone public with their relationship and was well aware of the press trying to figure out who exactly he was dating. They knew nothing except that he was dating some Asian beauty and he could care less if the ever got to know more or not. He didn't care about the press and what they wrote about him. If he didn't like it, he could always sue their asses off.

"If they want a show let's give them one. I don't care," Akihiro shrugged and looked at Tony. "We'll take the main entrance. Thank you."

Tony nodded. "Of course. Have a great rest of the evening, sir."

"You too." Akihiro said and followed Jean-Paul to the door.

"You sure about this?"

He saw the concern in the speedster's eyes. "Yes, sweetness."

"If we do this now there'll be no turning back. They'll try to find out everything about you."

Akihiro smirked. "Let them have fun digging for things that aren't there. I lived in the shadows my whole life. There's nothing on me for them to find."

"All right." Jean-Paul let out a shaky breath and entwined their hands. "We go straight to our car, no word, no look at them."

"As you wish."

With a last look at him, the speedster opened the door and almost immediately there were flashes everywhere and questions thrown at him from all sides. He tightened his grip on the feral's hand and headed straight for their black SUV. As he finally slid into the passenger's seat he noticed that he had been holding his breath.

"You okay?" Akihiro asked and buckled his seatbelt.

"Yeah. You?"

"Peachy." The feral stared the car and started driving into the opposite direction than Jean-Paul had expected.

"Where are you…?" he asked and pointed behind him, looking confused but Akihiro merely chuckled.

"You don't really think I head back home, sharing my bedroom with two little children when you decide to go on a world tour for three months tomorrow, do you?" Akihiro asked, his already deep voice even deeper and the speedster shuddered. Noticing the unasked question, he waved off. "I found a babysitter, don't worry," he said, a dark smirk creeping up at the corner of his lips. "You're mine tonight, darling. Hope, you can sleep on your trip to Canada tomorrow because you definitely won't sleep tonight. That's a promise." Akihiro chuckled as Jean-Paul blushed noticeably and continued heading into the direction of the hotel he had booked a room in.

FUTURE

"You sure you can repair it?" Jack asked for the at least 20th time and a groan became audible underneath his beloved black Audi. He tapped his foot impatiently and checked his watch. "I need to be in court in two hours."

The creeper became visible from underneath the car and Jake shot him a glare. "Dude, chill and let me work, okay?" he snapped and disappeared underneath the car again where he kept on working on the broken part.

Now, Jack began to fumble with tools and accidentally dropped one, a curse became immediately audible from underneath the Audi.

"Sit your ass down and let me work!" Jake barked.

"I'm sorry. I'm just on edge," Jack sighed and ran a hand through his hair nervously before he checked his phone.

"I hardly noticed," came the sarcastic reply and Jake reappeared after a couple of minutes again before he wiped his hands on a dirty towel and nodded at the ignition. "Try to start it."

Jack nodded, slipped behind the wheel and did as he was told. The engine ran smoothly and didn't make any sick sounds anymore. "Thank God," he said in relief and got out of the car again. "You saved my ass."

Jake huffed. "Don't I know it…" He reached out to sip on his soda, looking at his brother all dressed up in a dark, black suit, shite dress shirt and black tie. He looked like going to a funeral. "Thank God I'm a mechanic," he muttered and Jack looked at him, cocking an eyebrow. "What? At least I'm handy and don't dress like a reaper."

Jack huffed. "Yeah, right. How many times did your not-handy brother busted your ass out of prison?"

Jake held up a hand. "I was never in prison! Just arrested."

Jack heaved a deep breath, fumbling with his tie nervously. "Whatever. Thanks, man."

Jake watched him and shook his head. "You're so whipped, dude."

"I'm not whipped. I'm expecting a child any minute!" Jack snapped and saw the smug smirk on his brother's face. He raised his hand. "Don't!"

Jake shrugged. "Poor choice of wording, bro. I just have to use it against you," he said and Jack groaned. "So you're expecting a kid, huh? Are you planning to squeeze it out your…"

"Bye, Jake!" Jack said quickly and got behind the wheel, checking his phone for any new calls. His brother knocked on the window and he pressed the button to open it a bit. "What?"

"You're almost out of gas."

Jack frowned and looked at the display in front of him. "Fuck…" He slammed his hand against the steering wheel.

Jake shrugged. "Just thought you should know. We don't want the squirt to miss your ugly face, do we?"

Jack glared at him. "You should try dating, you know?"

"Me? No. Why should I?" his brother asked, sipping on his soda. "I'm happily single, have plenty of single ladies to choose from and one look at you is enough to make me realize how lucky I am."

Jack looked at him for a long time and finally rolled his eyes. "Whatever. Thanks again."

"Yeah. Have fun beating Murdock's ass with that case."

"Oh, I will. Matt doesn't stand a chance," Jack grinned and waved before he drove off.

Jake watched the Audi disappearing through the gate and blinked against the sun that stood high in the sky. It was hot for mid March. He wiped his brow and turned to smile and an object of beauty in front of him. "Now it's just you and me, baby," he cooed and patted his car lovingly. After pulling the creeper over, he began working on his car, completely forgetting the time.

It wasn't before he heard the gate opening again that he realized the air had turned chilly and the sky was already darkening. Still, he didn't pay much attention to the car that came to a halt next to his and also neither to a door being shut and footsteps coming closer.

"Uhm, excuse me?" someone asked and Jake moved the creeper back so that he appeared from underneath his car.

The first thing he noticed where red heels and slim, trained legs that were half covered in a tight black skirt and attached to a slim and obviously well-toned body. He smirked as his eyes travelled over the upper part that was covered in a black blazer, a green shirt hidden beneath it and clearly hiding two well-proportioned arguments, before he discovered long red hair that was framing a very appealing face. "What can I do for you, darling?" he asked and stood up, chuckling at how tiny she looked compared to his 6'6''.

The woman stared at him, blushing and brushed her hair back nervously. "I, uhm, I'm looking for Charles Xavier. I had an appointment with him thirty minutes ago, but I got stuck in traffic."

He nodded. "I'll show you. Just let me tidy up quickly." he offered, locked his car and packed away his tools neatly, before he wiped his hands as clean as he could and beckoned her to follow him. Jake held the door open and winked at her, chuckling as she flushed once more. "So what do you want from him?"

"Oh, I'm working on my dissertation and he was so kind to offer help," she said and smiled at him.

"What's the title?" he asked and stared at her after she finished naming it. "Wow…"

"What?"

He stopped in front of Xavier's office. "You'd give my brother a boner just saying that."

She blushed. "So your brother is into genetics and social studies too?" she asked and brushed her long hair back.

"Jamie? Yeah, he studied it. Don't ask me what his dissertation was about though. That guy is too Hawking for me."

"Jamie's your brother?" she suddenly asked and stared at him wide eyed before a knowing smile appeared on her lips.

"What?" Jake asked, cocking an eyebrow and leant back against the wall, arms crossed.

"Then you must be the infamous Jake. He told me a lot about you."

"Hopefully, only nice things," Jake said, smiling at her and she laughed. "I hope infamous is among charming, handsome and irresistible?"

"Rather among notorious womanizer with a way too huge ego," she replied with a wink, smiling at his uttered Ouch and offered her hand for him to shake. "Olivia Stark."

"Olivia?" Jake asked, taking her hand. "You're little Liv?"

"Yes."

Jake whistled impressed. "The last time I saw you, you were what? A baby?"

Liv rolled her eyes at him playfully. "12 actually. And I remember too well how you dropped that water balloon on me."

He clicked his tongue and shrugged. "I'm pretty sure that wasn't me," he said and she snorted.

"It was you." She looked past him and beamed. "Hi!"

"Hey," Jamie greeted back, hugging her before he pointed at his brother. "Hope he didn't annoy you too much."

Liv waved off. "No, but he's exactly as you described him."

"Where are you heading?" Jake asked, since Jamie seemed to be in a hurry.

"Jack called. Izzy has gone into labor and he's on his way here," he said and nodded at the office door. "Grandpa knows you are here and is expecting you. I'll see you later." He headed down the corridor and towards the main door.

Jake watched how Liv knocked on the door and it didn't take long for the Professor's voice to tell her to come in. "Have fun," Jake smirked and waited for her to be gone before he joined his brother at the front door. "Notorious womanizer, huh?"

Jamie shrugged. "Just sticking to the truth."

"Well, now I know why you loved working at Tony's. She's damn hot."

"And taken!" Jamie added. "Her fiancé is an ass though." He noticed the look in Jake's eyes. "Jake, no! Not Liv!"

"I didn't say anything!"

"I know that look."

"What look?" Jake asked innocently and leant back against the pillar behind him.

"This out for a hunt look that you always get when you see a woman you like," Jamie replied. After a moment he sighed. "Seriously. Why don't you settle down?"

"Why should I? I love my freedom," Jake said and looked at the gate, waiting for it to open. "Just because you and everyone else feel the need to build a nest, doesn't mean I need to do the same. I'm happy with my life as it is." He noticed Jamie's scrutinizing look. "What?"

His brother shook his head and sighed. "Nothing…"

Jake shrugged and let go of the pillar. "Well, take a picture after Jack fainted."

"Where are you going now?"

"Taking a shower."

"And then?" Jamie asked suspiciously.

"Don't know, yet."

While he disappeared back inside, Jamie remained on the outside and waited for his brother to arrive. He kept on checking his phone in case the baby decided to come earlier and he needed to head out and meet them somewhere. However, fifteen minutes later the gate opened and Jack's car appeared, coming to a halt next to Jake's. Jamie descended the stairs to meet Jack. "How far apart are the contractions already?" he asked while Jack opened the door.

"Two minutes and it hurts like a bitch!" Izzy groaned as Jack helped her out of the car and supported her while walking.

"Two minutes already? I told you to call me when they are about ten minutes apart so that we can do it without too much stress!" Jamie said exasperated.

Jack huffed and led Izzy slowly inside, stopping each time she needed to take a breath. "We were having dinner just an hour ago. She was completely fine until all of a sudden her water broke and I called you immediately!" He stopped when Izzy had to lean back against him, her face a mask of agony. "I can carry you, baby, if it's too much," he offered and she nodded, whimpering as he picked her up and followed Jamie quickly to the med bay. "Hi mom," he greeted Jean, who was already waiting for them and carefully dropped Izzy on the bed, still holding her hand. While Jamie informed his mother about everything that Jack had told him, this one helped Izzy out of her clothes and got his oversized shirt out of the bag that she wanted to wear. He was glad that Jake wasn't around. He was a nervous, helpless wreck.

As if he was watching a movie Jack observed Jamie and his mother examining Izzy, who was determined to crush his hand. He didn't know what to do or to say, had completely forgotten about the tips his father had given him and all he was capable of was standing, staring, muttering incoherent words and holding his girl's hand. Inside, he was going crazy as he picked up on all her pain and emotions.

"Well, you are not a second too late," Jamie said and shook his head. "Your baby wants to do it quick. You are already ready to push, Iz."

"I hate you!" Izzy growled at Jack as she was writhing in pain and squeezed his hand even more. "I hate you so much right now!"

Jack, following his mother's instructions, got behind his girl to support her while she started pushing hard. He was still sure he was actually sleeping. There was no way in hell this was happening right now. They just had dinner and he was convinced they had gone to bed and he was stuck in some kind of nightmare. To him it appeared to be an eternity until a shrill wail filled the room and a bloody heap of little human being was placed upon Izzy's chest. He stared at the tiny baby in shock and awe, hardly aware of Izzy's happy and relieved sobs.

"A baby girl. Congrats, bro," Jamie said, his smile wide and with tears in his eyes. He laughed as he noticed the tears in his mother's eyes and hugged her.

"Sammy…," Izzy whispered and stroked carefully over her daughter's head, beaming at Jack, who laughed and kissed her before he buried his face in her neck and cried in joy, smiling at his little girl in sheer happiness.

"Sammy?" Jamie asked, wiping his eyes and watching the little family content.

"Samaya Jae," Izzy said, still staring at her baby in awe. "Jack came up with the nickname." She handed the baby over to Jean, who went to do a check-up, followed by Jack who kept a close eye on his daughter. Afterwards, Jack has already bathed and dressed the girl, Jean hugged him and kissed his check. "I'm so proud of you, honey," she said and smiled happily, stroking through his short hair as she remembered something. "Oh, I nearly forgot."

"What?" Jack asked, looking up from his sleeping daughter that slept cozily in her father's arms, wrapped in a pink blanket.

"Your father wanted me to call him as soon as the baby was born," his mother said and reached for her phone.

"Let me," he said, taking the phone from her and waited for her to leave the room before he dialed his father's mobile phone and waited for him to pick up.

"Yeah?" Logan's gruff voice soon echoed through the speaker and Jack didn't know why, but his heart began to race in a good way.

"Dad?" he asked, waiting for his father's reply before he wanted to announce the birth, but could only utter a happy sob. "It's a healthy baby girl, daddy."

He heard Logan chuckling happily and could have sworn his father's voice wasn't s steady as usual as he replied: "Good work, son. I'm proud of you."

"Thanks," Jack sniffed, smiling at his little girl.

"I'm on my way home. I see ya in a bit."

"Yeah." Jack disconnected and heaved a deep breath to steady himself, before he joined his family again.
