Death Note
Chapter 55
"Trev? Are you ok?" Klaus asked when he realized I wasn't moving or even looking at him.
I didn't respond. I just sat there with my eyes wide realizing that my Death Note was missing.
"Trevor? Are you there? Did your screen freeze or something?"
I could feel Millie's gaze on me, but I didn't bother making eye contact.
I turned my attention onto my webcam.
"Oh, there you are," he said with a smile, but it quickly disappeared when he noticed how flushed my face was.
"Hey, buddy, is everything alright?"
I shook my head. "I think I just lost something..." I turned my head towards Millie, "… something VERY important."
Her eyes widened as big as mine did and then immediately dropped into a dark scowl as she mouthed the words 'fuck-up.'
"Like what?" He asked; bring my focus back on him.
"Uh… um… never mind," I said with embarrassment as I forced a very obvious fake smile on my face.
"Anyway," I started. "What was up with you today? You didn't seem like yourself when you left."
"Yeah sorry. I couldn't argue with my mom to stay at your house."
His voice sounded shaky and my face formed an annoyed expression.
"You're lying," I stated.
"What? No I'm not."
"Klaus, I've known you for 11 years. I can tell when you're lying."
I began thinking back to the last time I saw the notebook. It was on my desk. I had forgotten to put it away from last night's incident. I remembered Klaus standing near there before he left earlier today.
He was about to say something, when I cut him off.
"You took it, didn't you?" I asked.
My face went from annoyed to very angry.
"Took what? Are you dumb? I think you need to get some sleep. You have dark circles forming under your eyes. Maybe that would help you stop making false accusations," he rambled on. It seemed like he was trying to start an argument. And I had a pretty good feeling he was about to get it.
"You took it. Don't lie!"
"I don't know what you're talking about!"
"The notebook! You stole my notebook! That's why you were so awkward- so you could get out as fast as you could with my notebook!"
Klaus gave me a straight look.
"Nothing gets by you, huh?" He said in a clam tone.
"So you did take it!"
"How could I not!? It was labelled 'Death Note,' Trevor."
My heart sank with grief but my blood boiled with anger.
"If you were smart, you wouldn't have taken it," I said in almost a threatening tone.
"If you were smart, you wouldn't be writing down names of innocent people!"
My eyes widened with aggravation and I felt like I was about to implode.
"What are you going to do, huh? Write my name down? I took the book from you, so I don't see how that's possible. I can't believe you were the one who murdered all those people! What is wrong with you!? Anyone who could have had this weapon, and it had to be you, Trevor."
There was no lying to hide the anything now. I did specify a couple of deaths, which is enough evidence to say that it was me.
Klaus covered his face with his hands and sighed with disappointment while I said nothing. I had to find a way to get the book back and eliminate Klaus before the word that I was the new Kira, began to spread.
Wait… eliminate? Did I seriously just consider killing my childhood friend? What the hell am I thinking!?
"The killings yesterday were an accident," I said in a quieter and calmer tone.
"Like hell they were!"
"If you want to blame somebody, blame her," I gestured to Millie, even though my webcam was too small to view her.
She closed the book and threw at me.
"Instead of throwing me under the bus, how about you try getting my Death Note back? I don't get another one, you know? And the boss doesn't exactly just let anybody slide for losing their notebook," she declared.
I turned my attention back onto Klaus.
"Are you going to give it back?" I asked.
"I really don't like the idea of this being in your possession," he responded.
"I won't use it again," I said.
"Knowing you, you won't get rid of it, which will tempt you into using it again."
"Why are you making such a big deal out of this?" I asked showing a bit of irritation in my voice.
"Because these are people's lives. You'll go insane, just like Light Yagami did," he pointed out. "Everyone knows what happened to him when he went on a killing spree with this stupid notebook. He died because he went too far."
"He died because he got too full of himself. I think we can all learn a lesson from that," I stated.
He sighed again as if he were thinking how pathetic I was.
"I'm only going to give it back because I don't want to be involved in this situation. You better not kill anybody again, unless it's for defense purposes only or I'll tell the police that you are the next Kira if you harm any more people."
I nodded in agreement and ended the video chat.
I knew Klaus was going to give it back eventually, or Millie would at least retrieve it herself. But now that Klaus knows that I am in possession of a Death Note, this could cause even more problems. I wasn't sure if I was going to use the book again or not, but I started giving more thought to the idea of giving it back to Millie. She knew I was under a lot of stress and would be more than happy to take it back, but there was that fear of her giving it to somebody more responsible and better at planning. It would be best if I just hung onto it for a little while longer and give it back to her when the time is right. Then there was also that fear of the one detective called Near. What if he found me? What would happen to me? Would I be on a death penalty? There were too many questions on my mind and I was beginning to feel overwhelmed by them. For now, it was best if I tried not to think about anything.
