Chapter 55. Not Dead Yet

Will's eyes suddenly locked on the dagger at Elizabeth's neck and his whole face was wiped clean of color. Will took a step towards her. "Don't hurt her," he said evenly. Aaron's mouth was hanging open as though trying to figure out how things had changed so suddenly.

"What happens to this lovely young lady depends upon what your captain does," Dr. Facilier said coldly. He pressed the edge of the blade closer to Elizabeth's neck causing her to gasp and then let out a faint gurgling noise.

"I'm acting captain," Will declared boldly. "Your issue is with me. Leave her out of it."

"No," Dr. Facilier yelled. "Bring up the Hatter or the girl dies."

"He's not here," Will insisted.

Dr. Facilier looked shocked. "Not here? Then where on earth is he?"

A faint smile tugged at Will's lips. "I honestly don't know."

Dr. Facilier's eyes seemed to bore into him. "He's got to be here."

Will shrugged. "Search the ship if you must. They're not here. They left earlier and went into the jungle and I have no idea where they went."

"Hey!" Khaos shoved his way forwards. "I have a stake in these negotiations. The Book for the girl if you please."

"Hey no way," Aaron scowled clutching The Book to his chest.

"You think I'm fooling around?" Khaos snapped angrily.

"Hush Khaos," Dr. Facilier ordered.

"I can do a lot more damage with the Book that I can with the girl," Khaos snapped. "I want it back." Khaos drew a sword from the scabbard at his belt and moved towards Elizabeth.

Will froze with fear. "Give him The Book, Aaron."

Aaron gave Will a shocked look. "Are you on crack?"

"Now, Aaron," Will barked. There was something so unsettled about Khaos that Will had no doubt that Khaos would slit the throat of Elizabeth and any other crew member he could get his hands on in order to get back The Book.

Aaron looked pained but he turned towards Khaos. "Let her go." He set The Book on the floor and kicked it halfway across the deck. Khaos grinned and shoved Dr. Facilier to one side. Gripping Elizabeth by the arm he albeit threw her across the deck towards Will and scooped up The Book. Will clutched Elizabeth and drew her a short distance away from the villains. Will let out a sigh of relief but didn't let go of Elizabeth or break eye contact with Dr. Facillier.

Aaron scowled and folded his arms. "I just gave the Joker a death ray." he muttered.

Dr. Facilier was glaring at his companion as Khaos caressed the cover of The Book. "Nicely done," Mim scoffed to Khaos.

Khaos shrugged. "They didn't have anything else worth trading. Besides I'll need this in case we run into any jaguars while we're out on the scouting party."

"Scouting party?" Mim demanded. Khaos elbowed the witch hard in the ribs.

"I beg your pardon?" Dr. Facillier snapped.

"Well, the whole reason we're here is to find the boy," Khaos said. He gestured towards Will and the others. These guys are just gravy. The Thirteen's crew had made their way onto the ship brandishing swords. "You seem to have this situation under control so somebody had better go get the whelp." Khaos fingered The Book's pages. "And seeing as Mim and I stand the best chance against the dangers of Peru…"

Dr. Facilier rolled his eyes. "Fine." He turned towards Will and Elizabeth who were surrounded by swords, all pointed at their throats. "Where did they go?" Will scowled until the sword point moved towards Elizabeth's neck. Will sighed in defeat.

"They went to find Emperor Kuzco," Will said. "That's all I know."

"Why don't you tell them your shoe size," Aaron muttered angrily.

Dr. Facilier let out a grunt of frustration. "Not much to go off of." He turned towards Khaos and Mim. Khaos met his gaze expectantly. "You two go find the boy."
Khaos did a mock bow. "You look so much more official when you order me to do my own ideas." Khaos turned to leave and Mim followed him. Dr. Facilier glared at their backs as they went.

Once they were safely in a rowboat on their way to shore, Dr. Facilier turned towards the three. "Until they come back, I think we'll make ourselves comfortable right here."

"Nicely done, Captain," Aaron scowled.

As the small rowboat drifted away from the ship Mim glanced back over her shoulder. Was this really the best time that Khaos could find for them to make their escape? "I hope you have a plan."

Khaos grinned. "Don't I always?"
"No," Mim snapped. "Half the time I think you just make it up as you go."

"Hey you're not dead yet so it's clearly working for us."

Rob followed Pacha quietly into the yard. Pacha let out a heavy sigh and slumped down on to a nearby bench. "Sooo," Rob said awkwardly. "You're not gonna tell her?"

Pacha groaned. "How can I?"

Rob sighed but nodded. Revealing news like that might send Chicha into early labor.

"What are you going to do?" Rob asked feeling utterly stupid even as the words left his lips.

Pacha shook his head. "I don't know."

The two of them were silent for a few moments after that. Rob felt completely helpless standing there. He had something to tell as well, but unlike Pacha he couldn't put off his news for much longer. His eyes drifted towards the sack. At that moment the body in the bag began to squirm and move. Rob frowned. "Pacha…" Pacha caught the movement as well and rose slowly to open the bag.

"Er Pacha," Rob stammered quickly. "There's something you should know."

At that moment Pacha had untied the sack and was staring at the dazed llama in the bag. "Whoa," Pacha cried.

"Never mind," Rob sighed.

Pacha was examining Kuzco. "Where did you come from little guy?" he asked gently.

Kuzco lifted a hoof. "No… touchy!" he mumbled.

Pacha let out a cry of alarm. "Demon llama!" he yelled as he fell backwards in shock. Kuzco seemed to bolt awake and looked around in terror. "Demon llama? Where?" he caught sight of Pacha's llama Misty. Both of the llamas screamed. Kuzco leapt to his feet and attempted to run, but Kuzco, unaccustomed to hooves rapidly tumbled a short distance across the yard. Kuzco ended up flat on his back and gazed at Pacha upside down.

"Okay demon llama, just take it easy," Pacha said holding up his hands defensively. "We mean you no harm."

"Except for Sophia." Rob muttered. He turned to Pacha. "Easy Pacha it's not a demon llama. I can explain."

Pacha shot Rob a skeptical look. "You can?"

"Well… er… not very well but I can try," Rob stammered.

"What are you talking about?" Kuzco moaned as he righted himself. "Wait… I know you… you're that whiny peasant!"

Recognition finally dawned in Pacha's eyes. "Emperor Kuzco?"

"Ding ding ding," Rob said drily.

"Yeah, who did you think you were talking to?" Kuzco snapped irritably.

"Do you want me to try and explain now?" Rob asked.

"I'm not sure," Pacha said in a baffled voice. He turned towards Kuzco. "Uh… how did you… you don't look like the emperor."

Kuzco looked insulted. "What do you mean I don't look like the emperor."

"Break it to him gently," Rob whispered to Pacha.

Pacha thought for a moment. "Do this," he said. He lifted his hand and waggled his fingers.

Kuzco scoffed and lifted a hoof. "What is this, some kind of little game you country folk like to..." Kuzco's hooves clicked against each other as he tried to do as Pacha did. Kuzco suddenly looked horrified.

"It can't be!" Kuzco wailed. He raced over to the small pond in the yard and gazed at his reflection. He let out a cry of horror. "My face!" he sobbed pawing at his face with his hooves. "My beautiful, beautiful face!"

Pacha and Rob exchanged unprepared looks. Pacha moved closer attempting to calm the panicked emperor.

"Okay, okay, okay. Whoa, whoa, whoa…."

"I'm an ugly, stinky llama!"

"Wait, okay, Your Majesty. Shh."

"LLAMA FACE!" Kuzco wailed.

Rob frowned at the highly freaked out llama. He remembered his sister often commented on how often democracy failed them. Apparently, psychology wasn't helping them much either.

Suddenly, Kuzco slapped himself. It seemed to snap him out of it.

"What happened?" Pacha asked gently.

"I'm trying to figure that out okay?!" Kuzco retorted as he attempted to wobble to his feet and fell flat again.

"I can't remember," Kuzco moaned. "I can't remember anything." He paused suddenly. "Wait a minute. I remember you. I remember telling you that I was building my pool...where your house was and then you got mad at me…" Kuzco gasped before he glared at Pacha. "And you turned me into a llama!"

Pacha nearly fell backwards in shock. "What? No, I did not."

"Yes and then you kidnapped me!" he yelled. Rob raised an eyebrow.

"Why would I kidnap a llama?" Pacha cried.

"I have no idea. You're the criminal mastermind, not me," Kuzco snapped.

"What?" Pacha seemed to throw up his hands in frustration.

"You're right," he eyed Pacha suspiciously. "That's giving you waaaaay too much credit." Rob pressed his head into his hand.

"He hit his head a few times going down a flight of steps." Rob explained.

"Okay. I have to get back to the palace," Kuzco muttered to himself. "Yzma's got that "secret lab." I'll just snap my fingers and order her to change me back." He grinned and turned towards Pacha. "Hey, you. No time to waste. Let's go." Rob rolled his eyes and resisted the urge to kick a stone in the llama's direction. Pacha just watched him go. "Hey, tiny, I want to get out of this body. Wouldn't you?" he snapped at Pacha. "Now let's go."

Pacha gazed at Kuzco evenly. "Build your summerhouse somewhere else."

Kuzco turned and glared at them, "You wanna run that by me again?"

Pacha spoke very slowly. "I can't let you go back unless you change your mind... and build your summer home somewhere else." Rob couldn't help but be impressed. It was probably the first time that Pacha talked back in his life.

Kuzco approached him. "I got a little secret for you. Come here. No, closer." Pacha moved his face closer. "I DON'T MAKE DEALS WITH PEASANTS!"

Pacha winced at the loud voice. Before slowly regaining his composure. "Then I guess I can't take you back."

"Fine," Kuzco pouted. "I don't need you. I can find my own way back." Kuzco began to make his way down the road.

Rob sniggered. "Yeah right."

Pacha suddenly looked concerned. "I wouldn't recommend it. It's a little dangerous if you don't know the way."

"Nice try, pal," Kuzco called over his shoulder.

"No, really. I'm telling you," Pacha insisted. "There are jaguars and snakes and quicksand."

Kuzco was making an attempt to drown out Pacha's words. "I'm not listening. Lalalala… oof" The llama stumbled and tripped.

"- I'm not kidding," Pacha persisted. "Listen, you cannot go in there."

"Still not listening!" Kuzco called once he regained his balance.

Pacha groaned in frustration. "Aw, you...Fine. Fine. Go ahead. If there's no Kuzco, there's no Kuzcotopia." Pacha turned to head back inside.

Rob groaned out loud. "I must be some sort of idiot." He chased after Kuzco.

"Rob," Pacha cried. "What do you think you're doing…?!"

"I need that spoiled brat," Rob called over his shoulder. "Please watch my cousin until morning. I'll be back… I hope."

Pacha stood there gazing at Rob in confusion. Something was very odd here. He slowly turned around and went back into his little house.
