Chapter 52 Usual Suspects
Washington, D.C.: Hall of Justice: December 30.
"The Justice League was formed for two reasons. First, as an acknowledgment that no single individual, no matter how powerful, can solve all the world's problems alone. And second, to uphold the values of Truth, Liberty, and Justice," said Superman. "That last one even in the name." The crowd laughed at the small joke. "These five heroes have sworn to uphold those values."
"You are watching live coverage of the Justice League's induction of its five newest members Looks like the entire League showed up to welcome the new blood," said Cat Grant. "Everyone, from Batman to Captain Marvel."
Alex, along with the team and Rockett was sitting inside of the Mount Justice back room.
"I'm glad they didn't kick Billy out," said Alex.
"I love the fact that there's a 10-year-old on the League," said Wally.
"There is?" asked Rockett.
Robin elbowed Wally in the side. "Way to keep a secret, genius."
"Oww! Hey, she's on the team now. It's okay if she knows," defended Wally.
They watched as Superman handed out the League membership cards. Zatanna curled in on herself when Doctor Fate was the first to be given the card and Rockett grumbled when Icon was the last. "You know, I was the one who convinced Icon to become a hero in the first place I should be outside, celebrating with him. Not hidden away in here!"
"Welcome to our world," said Kaldur.
Rockett sighed looking at Kaldur. "I suppose there's an upside."
The team applauded with Red Arrow was given his membership card by Green Arrow.
"Way to go Roy!" cheered Wally.
"At last, he has his wish," said Kaldur.
"The first of us to make it! No one will call him "a sidekick" anymore," said Robin.
"Since when is being a sidekick a bad thing? You sidekicks were my inspiration." Rockett asked the three boys.
Robin began to explain. "Well, see six months ago-"
Alex zoned out at those last word. Has it only been six months? It seemed to have been longer, but at the same time not.
"Alex, did you hear me?"
Alex looked up to Kaldur. "Huh?"
"I said, we got alert of Cheshire's trail, we're moving out."
"Oh, sure, let's go." Alex stood up and walked out with the team.
"You sure you're okay?" asked Zatanna.
"Yeah, just hard to believe that it has already been six months," admitted Alex.
"How time flies, right Rob," said Wally.
Robin wiped away an imaginer tear. "Soon your little girl will be a year old."
Wally did a fake sob. "They grow up so fast."
Alex did a playful swing at the two. "Oh, shut up."
"What do you mean by a year old?" asked Rockett.
Wally placed a hand on Rockett shoulder. "Get ready for a long story."
Smokey Mountains: December 30.
"A-are you sure it's her? I mean, are you positive?" asked Artemis.
Robin pulled up the image of a young brunette woman getting on a plane in front of all the team on the bioship. "See for yourself. Here is the security footage from the Asheville Regional Airport. Facial recognition confirms that's Jade Nguyen."
Supergirl leaned towards Artemis. "You've seen her without her mask. Can you confirm it? What do you think?"
"It's Jade," confirmed Artemis.
"Focus on what she carries," ordered Aqualad. "Is that the case you saw in New Orleans? The one that got away?"
"Yes."
Ok. I'm guessing from the mug shot that this Cheshire is the bad guy. Now, what's so important about the case?" questioned Rockett.
"Remember the Injustice League?" asked Robin.
"And their giant evil plants? Uh yeah!"
"The Team and the League put them in prison," said Aqualad. "But their allies still scheme."
Supergirl sunk low in her chair. "Tell me about it."
"Whatever is in that containment case is important to their plans," said Aqualad.
"We had the chance to grab it in New Orleans," said Kid Flash. "But someone screwed up."
Supergirl shot Kid Flash a glare when his gaze beamed on Artemis.
"Approaching Cheshire's jet," announced Miss Martian.
They flew in on a crashed jet, destroyed in many pieces on the winter snow.
Artemis gasped and looked away. Supergirl placed a subtle hand on Artemis shoulder as they landed near the crash site.
"Looks like there were no survivors," said Zatanna.
"How come Homeland Security and the NTSP aren't all over this?" asked Rockett.
"Cheshire's ID was a League alert. Authorities didn't pick up, the jet flew under the radar," explained Robin.
"Then why isn't the League here?"
"Because our Boy Wonder had some mighty hacking skills and arranged to get the alert first," said Supergirl.
"Chesire and that case are our unfinished business," said Aqualad.
Supergirl pushed over another broken piece of jet. "Something's not right, where are the bodies?"
"Here's one."
They all turned around to see Cheshire standing above them. "And it is stunning."
Just then emerging from the snow was the Riddler, Mammoth, and some armed men with Apokolips weapons.
"I am flora, not fauna. I am foliage, not trees. What am I?" asked Riddler. "Come on; you got this! I am shrubbery, not grass. What am I?"
"I-am-bushed," said Robin.
Supergirl was starting to wish they just stayed for the rest of the Justice League ceremony.
"We are tired to your interference kiddies," said Riddle. "So, we stage this little trap, knowing that you would follow Cheshire's trail. This is the end game. Ordered from above and executed by their master strategist, Moi."
"Oh brother," groaned Supergirl.
"Miss Martian, is everyone linked?" asked Aqualad as Riddler was monologuing.
"Yes."
"Go!" ordered Aqualad.
"Ekaks siht ebolgwons!" chanted Zatanna.
They all scattered, and Supergirl felt lifted in the air.
Happy Harbor City: Happy Harbor: Mount Justice: December 30.
"Tell me if this sounds familiar."
Supergirl tried not to wince at the tone of Batman's voice.
"You hacked League systems, disobeyed protocol and endangered your lives," said Batman.
Yep, sound like six months ago to Supergirl.
"And your initiative resulted in the capture of three escaped felons, proving Warden Strange runs Belle Reve as a cover for criminal activity." Batman smiled. "Well done."
The team all looked at each other surprised by their praise. Supergirl was amazed that Batman knew how to smile, but the smile quickly vanished when Batman turned to the metal case they recovered.
"And then, there's this."
Inside was various tiny white organisms.
Icon picked one up and examined it. "I am unfamiliar with the species; the bio-component is not from Earth."
"It certainly is biotechnology combined with nano-circuitry," stated Batman. "We'll take it to the Watchtower for further study."
Red Tornado packed up the metal case as Batman and Icon followed him to the zeta tubes.
Recognized: Batman: 02. Red Tornado: 16.
Rockett flew up to Icon "Congrats on the League thing," she said. "Sorry I skipped out."
Icon placed a hand on her should. "We both seem to have found teams that suit us."
Canary placed a hand on Icon shoulder. "Come on; we don't want to miss the Justice League welcoming party."
Recognized: Black Canary: 13. Icon: 20.
"You realize we were set up," Robin said to Kaldur.
"Yes, Cheshire and Riddler were tipped and ready for us," said Kaldur.
Artemis and Alex groaned. "Not the mole thing again!" said Artemis.
Rockett walked up. "Mole thing? Again?"
"We had intel that there was a traitor on the team," explained Kaldur.
"Namely Alex, M'gann or me," snapped Artemis.
Alex took a step back from the group.
"It's more complicated than that," defended Robin.
"But there has been some teammates behavior that has been concerning," admitted Kaldur.
The whole team turned to Alex, who had frozen in her footsteps backward.
"What?" snapped Alex.
Excepted for Rockett, they all glanced at each other before looking back to Alex.
"You have been acting kind of weird lately," said Wally.
"Stranger than your usual self," added Zatanna.
"You think I'm strange?" asked Alex. "How?"
"Alex, we know it's you that is taking all the silverware from the kitchen," stated Zatanna.
Alex felt her face flushed. Lately, she had been accidentally bending the silverware in the kitchen but was too embarrassed to tell anyone, so she only ended up hiding it in a shoebox under her bed.
"It was you!" shouted Wally. "That's not fair! Black Canary thought it was me!"
"Let's focus on something else," suggested Robin with a smile. "Like the fact that I saw Supergirl flying today."
The atmosphere in the room changed at that news.
"Oh my god! You were flying!"
"That's awesome!"
"You couldn't fly before?"
"Way to go!"
"When did it happen?"
They all approached her, and Alex quickly took a step back from them holding up her hands.
"Wait, it's not what you think, you see-"
Alex got cut off when a high pitching nose came from her ears and sent her crouched to the floor.
"Supergirl, I believe you used up the last of your shields. I have more. Meet me at Santa Prisca."
"Supergirl?"
Alex looked up to see everyone crowded around her, they all had concern looks on their faces. Even Wolf, who came over and nudged her with his nose.
Alex was bent over when she looked up to see her friends all huddle around her. There was a mix of concern and scared expression on all their faces. Looking at them all, Alex realized that these were the people that Alex could trust no better. She would feel no safer than with all of them.
Still, on her knee's she made eye contact with all of them. "I need to tell you all something."
"Okay," said Wally. "And that would be…"
"I first need you all to promise me something," said Alex. "I need you all to promise me nothing will change. That you all won't run for the hills, that you all will still look at me the same way that you always have. Please, promise me."
Robin dropped down to Alex level and took her right wrist in his hands.
"I don't need to promise. You can try all you like, but to me, you will always be Alex. Nothing will change that ever."
The others nodded theirs in agreement.
"Doesn't matter what you tell me, girl," said Rockett. "I'm still getting to you know, but I think to handle anything this team throws at me, which has been a lot in the past few hours.
Alex laughed with the rest of them. She then cleared her throat and got all their attention.
"It happened during Thanksgiving. I…I found out…I found out that I'm half human."
Everyone's eyes widen at that revelation.
"That's why you don't have all of Superman's powers," said M'gann.
"That doesn't seem to be a problem, not after today at least," said Robin with a smirk.
"It's more complicated than that," admitted Alex. She reached into her back pocket and pulled out the box of shields; she still had one left. She had too afraid to use that last one. "I got these during Thanksgiving too. They suppress my human DNA. Allow me to have all the powers of Superman. Of course, at the same time, my actual powers start showing up. I have been having trouble keeping them under control. The shields, they help, but at the same time I sacrifice control of my emotions for control of my powers when I put on the patches."
"Which would explain the angry outrages during the missions," said Artemis.
"Yeah, it is hard to explain, but it feels like there is this fog in my brain and I can't focus or think straight. I'm just angry."
Wally folded his arms and put his one hand to his chin. "Could also be because your actual powers are clashing with the effects of the patch too. If your DNA, half human, half Krypton, can produce Kryptonian powers just fine then it's probably not liking the fact that the patches are trying to suppress half of what makes you, well, you. You could be causing damage to your system and not know it."
"Oh, what powers do you have already," asked M'gann, excited.
"Um, I can fly, or hover more like it, my heat vision seems to have a mind of its own, and my strength has increased, which is why there is a lot of bent spoons missing from the kitchen. Other powers have popped up there and there, which has not made these past few months very fun," said Alex. "But I would not say that I have these powers down," she added.
Kaldur took the box of shields from Alex. "Where did you get these?" he asked.
Alex swallowed, this was the part she had been dreading.
"From my other biological donor...Lex Luthor."
The room went quiet.
"Lex Luthor...is your dad," said Robin.
The shocked look on his face made Alex want to crawl under a rock and stay there. The others also had complete surprised looks on their faces.
"Luthor is summoning me to Santa Prisca," informed Alex. "I'm sorry, I would understand if you no longer want me on the team anymore."
"Uh."
Everyone turned to Artemis.
"Supergirl isn't the only suffering from bad blood," said Artemis.
She walked over to the hologram computer and typed into a bunch of stuff until three pictures of Chesire, Sportsmaster and another person that Alex did not recognize popped up on the screen.
"My mom is Tigress, an ex-con," explained Artemis. "But my dad is Sportsmaster and my older sister; Chesire. Who is flying me to Santa Prisca."?
Wally gasped. "That's why-"
"Yeah," said Artemis. "I was so depressed to make sure that none of you found out about my family, found out about me."
"I knew," admitted Robin.
Artemis looked up shocked.
"Hey, I am a detective, but that never mattered. For either of you," he said, looked at back at Alex. "You both are one of us."
Artemis smirked and glanced a look at Alex, who finally found the courage to nod her head and smile back.
Wally went over to Artemis and rested his arms on her shoulder.
"So, who's next?" he asked.
"Me," announced M'gann, wrapping her arms around herself.
Wally held up his hand in surrender. "I swear I was kidding."
"Queen Bee has been blackmailing me," said M'gann. "About my true form, she wants me to meet her in Santa Prisca."
"Your true form? What, you mean bald M'gann?" asked Robin. "Who cares about-"
"No," cut off M'gann. She let out a deep breath and then transformed into the white creature that Alex remembered seeing on the mission in November.
The others gasped, except for Aqualad and backed away.
"Whoa," said Rockett.
M'gann wrapped her arms around herself. "I knew that if you saw my true form, you would never accept me."
"M'gann, did we seem to swallow," questioned Kaldur.
"I couldn't take the chance; I endure constant hatred in Mars for how I looked. I couldn't handle it if you all felt the same."
Alex stood up and walked over to M'gann. She looked her hand.
"I knew back in November during the mission with Psimon."
"But...I thought, why didn't you say anything?"
Alex shrugged. "Figured you tell when you were ready."
M'gann shifted back into her Miss Martain form and hugged Alex tightly.
"Thank you."
Alex returned the hug.
"Okay, anyone else want to share," asked Kid Flash. "Rob?"
"Go screw yourself."
"And I guess we're done sharing."
"Now we form a plan," said Kaldur.
Santa Prisca: December 30
"Give me more shields, and I'm in too," said Supergirl. Part of her was convinced that this was not going to work. Maybe she could fool Queen Bee, Sports Master, Chesire, and Bane, but Lex Luthor was another story.
Luthor stepped up to her. He placed his hand under her chin and lifted it. "You are a terrible liar, my child."
Supergirl jerked her chin free and tried to make a move.
"Red Sun."
Supergirl froze where she was. Luthor walked back towards Queen Bee, passing the Desmond monster. "Bring her along," he ordered.
Artemis ran forward an fired an arrow that surrounded the Desmond monster in green foam before he could touch Supergirl. Miss Martian then raised her one hand and lifted Artemis in the air. With her other hand, she went Queen Bee flying into a tree.
"You're safe from Queen Been control Supergirl," said Miss Martian.
Artemis shot another arrow at Sports Master and Chesire before she was dropped to the ground.
Supergirl walked towards Luthor and his assistant. "Looks like I can fool you too."
"I'm so proud," said Luthor.
"You can't control me anymore. Miss Martain removed the Red Sun programming from my head-and confirmed that nothing else was placed before I was rescued."
"Yes, I blame Doctor Desmond for that," said Luthor, looking towards the left.
Supergirl followed his gaze and was tackled to the ground by the Blockbuster creature. He slammed her into the ground and slid her across the dirt until she was shoved off the cliff. She managed to catch herself in the air and fly back up to the edge where she landed on her feet. The Blockbuster creature charged at her again. Supergirl dodges one hit before being sent to the ground by another. Miss Martian rushed in front of her and threw some rocks at him. Desmond only growled at them in response.
"Supergirl, Miss Martian move!"
They both got out of the way as Aqualad and Rockett used the Apokolips weapons from Bane's men and trapped Desmond to the ground. He growled and thrashed but could not escape.
Supergirl walked towards him. "You should control that anger." She then hit Desmond, knocking him out.
When the smoke of the battle cleared, the team had captured, Bane and his men, the Blockbuster monster, and Sportsmaster. Queen Bee, Luthor, and Chesire got away.
Kid Flash was holding Sportsmaster mask. "New souvenir."
Supergirl walked over to Artemis standing by Sportsmaster. "You okay?" she asked.
Artemis nodded. "Better. What about you?"
"Better."
"It is always like this," said Rockett.
"Told you," said Zannata.
"Disaster averted, feeling the aster," said Robin.
"Agreed, this was a good day," said Aqualad.
Supergirl couldn't help but also agree.
Happy Harbor City: Happy Harbor: Mount Justice: December 30.
"Roy was the mole," said Batman.
Or not.

One more chapter! Just to let you all know. This series might not be continued. At least not for a while. But I may post some single stories to the series "And My Life Begins Here". But I want to work on some other stuff too. Depends.
