The more you know

Daimon opened the drawer on his nightstand and took out something that Maya couldn't see.

"Hey what are you doing? You're acting really weird." Daimon simply flashed her the biggest smile that he could have made and as he reached her he went down on one knee before he opened what Maya now realized was a small box containing a beautiful ring. "What the heck are you doing Daimon?"

"Maya Hart,"

"No!" Maya cut him off.

"Will you,"

"No!" Maya tried again.

"Do me the,"

"No!"

"Favor of helping me,"

"No! Wait what?"

"With coming up with a way to give Emily this promise ring."

"Really? Daimon, you couldn't come up with a less messed up way of asking me?" Maya asked.

"And miss you losing your composure completely?"

"That's just messed up Daimon." Maya complained,

"Are you actually expecting me to feel bad about this? As if you're not the exact same way yourself? Can you actually with a straight face say that you wouldn't have felt like doing the same thing if you were in my position?"

"Well, no. I still don't like it though." Maya crossed her hand and glared at Daimon.

"Okay, putting the fact that you're mad at me for pulling a harmless prank on you aside, wou-"

"That was not harmless!"

"Putting that aside." Daimon tried again, "Would you please answer the question?"

"Why a promise ring anyway? With how crazy you are, why not just go for the engagement ring right away?"

"Maya…" Daimon tried to stop her

"I mean you're going to say that you will propose to her someday right?"

"Maya..."

"Why not just do it right away?"

"That's not what the ring is for Maya." Daimon told her.

"Then what is it for?"

"Okay, I'm going to explain this in full now, but can you let me finish the explanation before you cut me off?"

"I'll try." Maya shrugged.

"Okay, fine. So, before I met Emily I was a jerk and a player. I hate that guy that I was and I will never go back to that. Now I want her to know that I never intend to revert back to how I was, even though I won't be close to her this next year."

"Why are you not staying in New York next year?"

"My dad is away for military work most of next year and my mum recently decided that she wanted to take an online course part time next year while she works full time. This is going to keep her way too busy for her to be able to take care of my little sister all alone."

"You have a little sister?" Maya realized just how little she knew about Daimon until then.

"Yeah, she's 10." Daimon brought out his phone to find a picture of his little sister. They didn't look much alike except for their eyes.

"She looks so cute Daimon!"

"Yeah, I think so as well. I only started to think that after I'd really gotten to know Emily though."

"Why is that?"

"Back when I was still just a jerk, she was usually just a hindrance and I therefore acted way too cold towards her. It took me way too long for me to realize what I'd done, and I only started working on my relationship with my sister back in November. She's way too innocent though so she forgave me during Christmas. I still don't really feel like I've made up for the way I've treated her and I want to be someone that she can count on, so I feel like I need to take this year to get to know her."

"I get that. You sound so reliable when you're talking about taking care of your little sister. It's hard to believe that you're the same immature boy who's still messing around with everyone whenever you have the opportunity."

"I'm planning on teaching her how to do that as well, but the most important part is that I want her to know that I'll always be someone that she can rely on to help her with whatever she might be struggling with."

"I get the feeling. So even with all this going on you're afraid that Emily is going to worry about you staying faithful? Listen: She trusts you completely so there is nothing for you to worry about. Where does your family live anyways?"

"They live in Miami so it's quite far away from New York. I also won't be able to come visit her all that often considering I'll be working most of the time that I'm not helping my family."

"It might be far, but if I know Emily, she's going to visit you quite often anyways and you'll still be in the same time zone so you can call each other and videochat whenever you want to. I'm sure that Emily wouldn't mind if you let your little sister talk to her sometimes as well."

"Yeah, we're going to make it work." Daimon agreed. "Emily also said that she wanted to meet my sister, so I'm sure that she would like that.

"So, Emily trusts you and there's no way that you're going to stop loving her."

"Does that mean that you won't help me with the promise ring?"

"Oh I'm definitely helping you, but we're going to have to do this Daimon style. We need a plan." Maya gained a wicked grin.

"I'm kinda curious as to what you define as Daimon style and whether or not I'll like that plan." Daimon was usually all for making a joke, but he had to make sure that Maya didn't want him to take it too far.

"Well, I won't force you to do anything that you don't want to. I have a feeling that you're going to end up being all for it though. Have you told anyone else about this by the way?"

"I figured that it would probably be best if we kept this between as few people as possible so that Riley wouldn't end up finding out. I'm scared that she might end up leaking it to Emily."

"Now that. Is a very real concern." Maya agreed.

Well That took a while, as usual. Closing in on the end of the story. I should be able to get out the next chapter soon enough, but we'll have to see when it actually ends up coming out.
