Knuckles the Echidna
"Okay, let's go!"
My name is Knuckles the Echidna. I am the guardian of Angel Island and the controller of all the Chaos Emeralds, known as the Master Emerald. Because of...recent events, I was separated from my island. It's now in a completely different world, and it's all because of him.
Luckily enough, during my travels across this strange world, I discovered something that made my heart beat with excitement. In a mountainous region, I came across my fate.
"Impossible...it can't be, the Master Emerald?" I wondered, staring at the gigantic green gem of ultimate power. But I thought it was still on Mobius...why is it here? No matter. I have to protect it, who knows what could happen? I walked over to the emerald and picked it up. Now I had the task of finding a suitable place for it. Perhaps up that massive mountain? It's a secluded place, and nobody would bother climbing up the mountain just for a gem which they may or may not be able to handle. Besides, I'll be there to protect it. Just like old times.
I carried the Master Emerald up the huge mountain, and placed it right at the top, and began to sit down, guarding it, like I was destined to. Forever.
Months later, my story begins.
One night, while protecting the Master Emerald, I heard a strange noise coming from the emerald. I was resting upon a rock, where I had discovered that the gem was broken into a mesh of pieces that flew into different parts of the world. Standing in front of the shatter emerald was a strange blue figure that I could easily tell wasn't Sonic.
"Who are you?" I asked it. No reply. "What did you do to the Master Emerald?" Nothing. Not even a single stutter. I tried to punch it, but it formed into some kind of puddle and disappeared. "Get back here! Ah, it's no use. Not when I have more important matters to attend to."
Instantly knowing what to do, I decided to search the surrounding area for any of the broken pieces, but with no luck. I then quickly decided to wait until day to search, because I would have an easier time searching for the Master Emerald pieces.
After sleeping through the dark night, I realised that Station Square is usually a hotspot for Chaos Emeralds, so I figured starting there would be my best bet. Blasting through the skies of England, I ended up in my destination before a minute could even pass. "Well, looks like my search begins here," I stated, walking into the highway, where I had picked up a location of a piece. That was quick.
Speed Highway
Action Stage
BGM: At Dawn
I headed into the quiet, yet busy portion of Station Square. Using my natural Master Emerald sensing ability, things would be a breeze. And they were, as I found the first piece in the streets themselves. Some of Eggman's robots were lying around, but they went down in a single punch, or Spin Jump - the technique most Mobians know how to use.
The second piece was also rather easy to find, as it was on somebody's balcony. Climbing up the building allowed me to reach it.
The third piece was actually easier. All I had to do was to climb up the top of a tall building and take out one of Eggman's robots to retrieve it.
"Good, that's the last piece in this area..." I said to myself, as the sun started to go down. "Evening already? This search is going to take longer than I thought."
Level C Complete
My search really was taking a long time. It dragged out to the point where night had completely taken over the world. Because I hadn't found a single Master Emerald piece after that third one, I was left stumped. Though, when I came to an area that had a seriously lit-up building with a sign telling me that it was called 'Casinopolis', my emerald-sense started tingling, so I immediately headed inside, pushing aside anybody that tried to tell me not to.
I just had to find those pieces. No matter what.
Casinopolis
Action Stage
BGM: The Dreamy Stage
Upon entering Casinopolis, my senses really picked up. Actually, after climbing up a wall, I found the fourth piece behind a sign. It's almost like somebody's placed them here! Somebody who doesn't know how to hide things... I commented, moving away from the sign.
Perhaps I was too correct with that, as I found the fifth piece underneath a colossal statue in the middle of the room. It was of a knight of some description, but I didn't care. The sixth piece had to have been nearby. Incredibly nearby.
After taking a detour at the highest point of the casino, I found a large group of spinning-robots. My Master Emerald senses kept beeping in my mind, tugging me towards the robots. Not really, of course, but I did feel a force pulling me towards them. Eliminating them all revealed to me the sixth Master Emerald piece.
"Progress is going smooth," I noticed, putting away the new piece. "I just hope things will stay easy like this. I have no idea how difficult this might get."
Level C Complete
As I stood among the wreckage of the robots, a strange red ball came up to me. Curosity got the better of me.
"What's this?" I asked, holding the ball in my hands. Unfortunately, it almost blinded me in some sort of light - one that I recognised from somewhere. Oh well.
When I regained control of my vision, I found myself facing a large ruin that I vaguely remember spotting once before.
"Where in the world am I?" I wondered, looking at my surroundings. I found some strange purple figures that looked exactly like me. But they can't be echidnas, right? I'm the last of my kind, there's no way. "Why does this place look so familiar? I have to get answers."
Walking around the ruin in the middle of the area, I discovered two echidna-like Mobians at some point in the pathway. All these purple Mobians really gave me a full-on sense of déjá-vu. But, I've never been to this place before. Am I home? Or is this still Earth?
As I walked up behind them, I got a better listen of their conversation. Both of them really stook out, though. It's like I know them.
"Father! I beg of you, don't!" the orange one begged.
"Tikal, the seven emeralds are essential to our tribe. They are what we live on. If we use their power directly, we will benefit," the older one replied.
Tikal? That's a name I remember, I thought, that name ringing bells in my mind.
"How...how can I get you to realise? Raiding other tribes, destroying their lives and taking it in stride cannot be the correct path to peace. Nobody has any sort of right to take their holy grounds! I beg you, father!" Tikal continued.
I beg you...? I contemplated, as that darned light returned.
As soon as my eyes became normal again, I appeared back outside Casinopolis. To my side were the sleeping bodies of Sonic and Tails, signalling two possible things. One; something happened to them, and two; they were tired. Either way, I didn't care.
"What's going on here, anyway?" I said to myself, not minding the two on the street and walking into the hotel opposite.
Inside, I saw someone I haven't seen for a while hold something I need.
Hey, it's Eggman. What's he doing there, and what is he...wait a minute, isn't that a piece of the Master Emerald? I gotta go after him! I noticed, following the doctor down the elevator he entered.
We both stood in a large room, as I stared at the back of Dr. Eggman's coat. "Eggman! Give me that piece of the Master Emerald you have there!" I demanded.
"Hmm? Master Emerald? Whatever are you talking about?" Eggman replied, revealing the object he had in his hand.
"Hmph. It's just a Chaos Emerald..." I sighed, ready to turn back.
"What did you mean by, 'Master Emerald'? Is that not back on Mobius?" he continued to ask.
"It turns out the Master Emerald was also brought here, but I feel it's not as simple as that. If I find Angel Island, I will definitely see if Hidden Palace has anything on this," I explained.
"Hmm, interesting. Before you leave though, I would like to test something on you," Eggman answered. "Chaos!"
While the doctor chanted that word, the same watery puddle from the other night appeared, revealing the same creature I saw that very same night. Though, here, he was much more bigger in size and more muscular. "It's that creature! The same one that destroyed the Master Emerald."
Eggman 'fed' the creature the Chaos Emerald he had, causing it to grow somewhat.
"Ha-ha-ha! I suppose you haven't met Chaos, have you Knuckles? In that case, I'll introduce you to your untimely demise from the God of Destruction!" Eggman introduced, telling me the creature's name.
"Chaos, huh? I remember reading that...but if it's a fight you want, a fight you will recieve. I'm not scared of something that changes shape!"
Chaos 2
Boss Battle
Chaos formed into a liquidy sphere and started bouncing around the room. Luckilly he wasn't destroying anything, so that's a plus. It kept bouncing, but when I glided into it, Chaos formed back into it's humanoid shape. From here, I kept trying to punch him, but all my attacks kept getting deflected by a shield of energy. As soon as I found an opening, I attacked with a Spin Jump.
This sort of cycle kept repeating itself, as I kept attacking it, the attacks it used just got more predictable by the second. Within a minute, I had won.
Battle End
While Chaos formed back into that ridiculous puddle, Eggman became increasingly annoyed.
"Pah! It doesn't matter if you win here. You have yet to see the destructive powers of Chaos!" Eggman boasted, trying to scare me, or something.
"So? I'm not afraid. You can't tell me anything that'll peak my interest," I answered, not fazed by his exaggeration.
"I do know something that might," Eggman stated. "It's about Sonic."
"What of Sonic?" I asked him, now interested.
"He's after the Master Emerald pieces too! You're not the only one on an emerald hunt, you blind fool! Why should I ruin the surprise? Go find Sonic and ask him for yourself!" Eggman continued, as he and Chaos left the gargantuan room.
I was left there, contemplating my options. What did he mean? Go find Sonic? I suppose that's the only way I'll make any sort of sense out of it, I thought, also leaving the room.
Using all the time in the world, I left Station Square and towards some other location, trying to find the remaining pieces of the Master Emerald.
Hovering above a forest, I spotted some strange yellow objects on one of the cliffs surrounding the forest.
"What's that?" I asked myself, slowly gliding down to retrieve them. "Gloves? I guess it can't hurt to try them on."
As soon as I slipped them on, replacing my current white gloves, that red ball from Casinopolis appeared.
"You got the Fighting Gloves! These special gloves will allow you to use the Maximum Heat Knuckles Attack, which can destroy a group of enemies within seconds!" the voice explained to me, as the red sphere disappeared shortly afterwards.
"Maximum Heat Knuckles Attack? Sounds like I'll have to try that one out sometime," I commented, gliding away into the mountains nearby.
Red Mountain
Action Stage
BGM: A Symbol of Thrill
Literally as soon as I entered the valley of mountains that had the suspicious tint of red, my senses started ringing. Following the trail, I noticed that my senses were going wild, but the Master Emerald piece wasn't visible.
"It's gotta be underground," I realised, digging underneath the strongest point, where the seventh piece should be. Luckily enough, the piece was there, leaving only a couple more in the valley.
The eighth piece wasn't too far off, as it was in the side of a mountain that was right next to me.
Now, the nineth piece was difficult, and very quite tricky to locate, but in the end, I discovered it hiding behind quite a tall mountain.
That's nine out of who knows how many. Even I don't know.
Level C Complete
After exiting the large valley of red mountains, I glided into another valley, though this was mainly green and kinda not a valley. Either way, I started looking for Sonic, all because of what Eggman said.
Like on cue, Sonic, Tails and Chris came up to me, leaving that plane of theirs. Finally, he's here, I thought, listening to what Sonic had to say.
"Hey there, Knuckles," Sonic greeted.
"What's the matter?" Tails asked me.
I had no time for this. I wanted answers and emeralds, and they weren't giving me any. I attacked Sonic, but he moved out the way as soon as I touched him.
Eggman's right. I see something weird and green in Sonic's hands...that's gotta be a piece of the Master Emerald, I noticed.
"Whoa, why are you attacking us?" Chris questioned.
"Hand me that emerald!" I answered, making sure I had my Fighting Gloves on correctly.
"Heh, that's not gonna happen!" Sonic stated, intiating that age old battle with myself.
Character Battle
VS Sonic the Hedgehog
"Knuckles, I'm not just gonna hand them over!" Sonic taunted, trying to hit me with a Spin Dash. I countered with one of my own punches.
"Sonic!" Tails called, striking me with his twin-tails. "I'll help ya out!"
"Fine, I'll battle both of you at the same time. It gives me a chance to try this out!" I grinned, charging up my Maximum Heat Knuckles Attack and releasing it at the right time - attacking the pair of them with considerable strength.
"Heh, that's a strong move, but I'm not gonna let up just yet!" Sonic stated, charging towards me.
"I'd be disappointed if you did!" I replied, returming the charge.
Sometimes, charging isn't the answer.
Battle End
Our charge led to something eventful. Something belonging to Sonic fell out of his reach, causing them to land far behind him.
"Oh no, the Chaos Emeralds..." Sonic mentioned.
Suddenly, Eggman appeared in that hovering machine of his and took the two emeralds.
"And there's nothing to it! Just like that, the two Chaos Emeralds are now within my hands!" Eggman gloated. "You, Knuckles! You proved too well for your own good!"
"You can't get away with this!" Tails stated.
"Hang on. Knuckles, has Eggman tricked you again?" Sonic questioned. "Smooth move!"
"Hey!" I argued. But it was no use, all three of them now knows I've been tricked for the third time. Darn that Eggman.
"Ho-ho-ho! I've now got four out of the seven emeralds!" Eggman continued. "Chaos, how about some food?"
At that, Chaos arrived, with Eggman feeding him the two emeralds. Because of this, the beast turned into some peculiar shape.
"Now what is he?" Chris wondered.
"No problem! I'll make him taste defeat!" I answered, following Chaos down to the pond below.
Chaos 4
Boss Battle
Chaos kept traversing underneath the water, as I was powerless to stop it. All I could do was dodge it's attacks by jumping and gliding. Because of this, the fight was pretty easy.
As soon as it stuck it's head out of the water, I was free to strike with any technique I had. Spin Jump, a punch, Maximum Heat Knuckles Attack, whatever. Spin Dash probably wouldn't work well here.
It's attacks consisted of splitting up into small spheres of water and trying to hit me with them, and splashing.
Yeah, this fight was over before it even started.
Battle End
While I was making Chaos eat dirt, a colossal flying fortress approached over the mountainous valley, encasing the area in a premature night.
"Behold my creation, the Egg Carrier! Watch out, Chaos' true power makes the Egg Carrier look like a piece of scrap metal!" Eggman stated. "Until we cross paths once more!" He was then beamed up to the ship, where Tails had an idea.
"Well guys, what're we waiting for? Let's use the X-Tornado!" Tails suggested.
"No thanks. I have some loose ends to tie up," I shook my head, rushing away from the area.
My search for the Master Emerald pieces began, without any interruptions.
I restarted my search inside the forest area - the exact same one where I found the Fighting Gloves - where I found a gold-yellow statue on another cliff. I heard a voice ring in my head, telling me what to do and where to go as soon as I picked it up.
"The ruin...two stone statues..." the voice mentioned.
"The ruin? That must be referring to that gigantic ruin in the middle of the forest...it looks just like the one I saw in that vision!" I realised, facing the ruin. "Two stone statues...that must mean I have to find two stone statues in order to get inside."
I held the gold statue tight, and took it over to the ruin, where I placed it in the appropriate place. The other statue holder-thing was coloured silver, and this one was gold, so I immediately figured the other statue was coloured silver. I looked all over the forest for this other statue, but found it after a few minutes. Placing it in the correct holder at the ruin, the entrance started to open, granting me entrance.
Lost World
Action Stage
BGM: Leading Lights
I landed in the main section of this lost ruin, where my emerald sense started going off like crazy. Naturally, I headed for the strongest signal, which was always the closest.
Master Emerald piece number ten was inside one of Eggman's reptile-like robots, which only took one swift and easy punch to take out.
Piece number eleven was hidden beside some boxes. Of all places, why here, Master Emerald? I complained, as I started to get annoyed with the lack of difficulty in finding these pieces.
Number twelve, which was the final signal I was getting in the entire ruin, was just next to a firey block. As it was in the wall, I quickly grabbed it via gliding.
Now that was easy.
Level C Complete
As I stood on the floor of this 'lost world', grasping all the Master Emerald pieces I had, that same red light appeared, confusing me to no end as it brought me somewhere else.
Where to, though? Maybe this will give me some answers this time.
When I awoke, I found myself facing a bridge that led to a shrine of some kind, where I could clearly make out the seven Chaos Emeralds on the surrounding pillars.
"This is very strange," I stated. "Looks like I have to move on."
I walked towards the pillar and then up the stairs, where I found that same orange Mobian from before. Tikal. Why does that name sound so familiar? She was talking to...the Master Emerald? How odd.
"I beg of you. If you were to listen to me anytime, please let it be now. My father, Pachacamac, will be arriving here soon. The Nocturnus Clan are all he thinks about. He fears that they will come and invade our tribe, and wants to use the power of the seven emeralds to defeat them," Tikal pleaded.
Nocturnus Clan...Pachacamac...I know these people, I remembered. But I don't remember why I know them.
"You must take everyone away from here! Please!" Tikal continued. I heard a small sound coming from the water surrounding the emerald. I took no sort of notice of it. "So, you can't leave this shrine? I understand. I shall talk to my father once again."
Tikal then turned around to face the Chao that had flown in. "Don't worry my friends, I will not let you down. I will keep this place sacred. I must do something...quickly."
As she started to walk towards me, the light engulfed me.
On the other side, I woke up facing the broken remains of the Master Emerald.
"I'm back with the Master Emerald. I have to restore it!" I remembered, walking towards the remains and placing my twelve pieces. This caused the emerald to reform after a huge amount of light emerged from what formed. "It's not complete...but where's the last few pieces?"
Suddenly, a figure formed within the emerald. It was reminiscent of the Egg Carrier. "That's Eggman's flying ship. But how do I get there?" I wondered. As if on cue, the sight of a red, white and black coloured robot hovering across the gigantic valley appeared in my view as I turned around. "That robot must belong to Eggman. If I follow it...yes! That's it! Eggman, here I come!"
I followed the hovering robot with my own gliding ability, and in barely any time, we arrived at Eggman's base. Just what I figured. Time to visit!
While I made my way onto the Egg Carrier, it launched, taking off into the skies above us. In the time the vision from earlier took, night had arrived, and I was on Eggman's ship. Now we'll see who's so easily tricked! I thought, starting to make my way through the fortress. I can sense the pieces somewhere, but just where, exactly?
I made my way through the bridge of the ship, but during the time I wasted doing so, procrastinating and gawking over the size of the ship, something weird happened. The Egg Carrier started to transform, increasing the length of it's 'wings' and the size of almost everything. "This thing can transform? Brilliant."
After realising I was pretty much stuck on the bridge, I kept trying to find where to go. Some of these doors would lead to other closed doors, and everything else pointed in the wrong direction. Until I decided to look in the door behind some yellow and black circle with an opening in the middle. A quick search inside of the pool area allowed me to discover a hidden area.
I sense the Master Emerald. It's got to be somewhere near, I thought, sensing the last few pieces. It was around here. After going into a passageway, my senses really started to go haywire. Like...this was the correct place to go.
And it was.
Sky Deck
Action Stage
BGM: General Offensive
My senses were about as crazy as the gravity here, because it kept changing depending on where I went. This didn't become much of an obstacle, as you can so plainly see. Oh...never mind.
Anyway, my search for the last pieces went swimmingly. Piece number thirteen was on some platform.
The remaining two signals were silent for the time I was in the air for. Considering the fact that they like to be in strange places, I took to the ground to find number fourteen and fifteen.
I found piece fourteen in a spinning-robot, guarded by a number of red turrets. I destroyed each and every single hostile thing near me thanks to my Maximum Heat Knuckles Attack. I need to keep my Fighting Gloves on at all times now.
As I searched and searched, piece fifteen was behind some closed doors. I'm the impatient type, so instead of finding a switch, I decided to smash my way through instead, destroying each of doors until I got the correct one.
Piece number fifteen was now within my grasp. Since I felt no more energy signals, that should mean I've found all the pieces. My job is done.
Level C Complete
Continuing the tradition, that red light came and was keen to show me something else. I played along, and allowed it to show me whatever it wanted.
The vision, dream, or whatever it was, took me to a slightly different sight. My interest in these vision peaked here, when I found fire emerging from the same shrine as last time. What's happening now? I wondered, proceeding to walk towards the burning altar.
On the path, I discovered Tikal and several Chao laying on the floor, most likely hurt from the sudden fire.
"Hey, what happened?" I asked, rushing towards the damaged girl.
"I...I couldn't prevent them...I couldn't stop them. They came and...oh no, this is not how it was supposed to happen...now the Nocturnus Clan will arrive and exploit our weakness...I had no idea this would be the end..." Tikal answered, barely able to get up. "I'm shocked..."
I noticed the Master Emerald was perfectly fine on the shrine (no rhyme intended), and Tikal just started running towards it, determined to do something about what's happened.
"Wait!" I called, before the vision ended.
Back in our world, time, or whatever - I'm not too sure - I was on the hidden room underneath the pool. I just stood there, thinking about each of these visions that I've had.
"Is this a dream?" I asked myself. "No matter. I have the last remaining Master Emerald pieces. I should go and restore the emerald." I got on my way out of the room, and back onto the Egg Carrier.
Whilst on the bridge, I saw a strange light emitting from the front of the ship, and some water being splashed about. I still can't figure out Chaos. Maybe if I go there, I'll get answers. I followed the pathway to the huge centre in the middle of the ship, where I found a scene I expected to see.
Some of the centre was destroyed, and a gigantic puddle lay where I first saw the splashing. Sonic was facing off with Eggman, but most likely battling Chaos.
"Not again!" Eggman grunted, slamming his mobile in frustration.
"Sonic!" I called, running up to that blue annoyance.
"Hey, you finally made it to the party! I was just busy trashin' Chaos until I beat him!" Sonic informed me.
Before I could even say anything, Eggman made a move. "I will return at some point!" he announced, hovering away.
"Oh no you don't!" Sonic countered, rushing after the doctor.
"I'll let Sonic handle Eggman. He'll be-wait, what?!" I commented, as I saw something weird. "Chaos? I thought Sonic beat him. It doesn't matter; I'll eliminate him before he stops me from restoring the Master Emerald!"
Chaos 6
Boss Battle
With the broken pieces of the centre being extremely dangerous for myself, I had to avoid them. You know, being able to glide really helps. Especially here.
Some small pod-like machines dropped onto the centre - most likely leftovers from the previous fight. I considered the possibility that these were used by Sonic to land a couple good hits in, so I followed in those footsteps, by Spin Jumping one, and throwing it at Chaos.
Just as I had predicted, it froze up, allowing me to attack him without getting hurt or stuck.
Chaos tried an attack where he would leap into the air and create a giant shockwave that should damage me. But it didn't.
I repeated the freezing technique, scoring two for me, and nount for Chaos. That shockwave attack was all he used before I got to him a third time.
"Come on, you can do better than that!" I taunted, trying to at least get a challenge out of this fight. That didn't work, as I landed a fourth and final hit, ending the fight once and for all, eliminating all the obstacles and distractions that would mislead me from my true mission.
Restoring the Master Emerald.
Battle End
Chaos was finally defeated. I knew this because of the six Chaos Emeralds that lay at where the water beast once was. I, was happy.
"Yeah! You're over!" I taunted. "The next step is to return the Master Emerald to it's former glory. I may as well take these Chaos Emerald while I'm at it."
So, I collected the missing Master Emerald pieces, and was now at the remains of the Master Emerald itself, ready to restore it for good. I allowed it to absorb the final pieces, and I placed the six Chaos Emeralds around the controller of them all. I then sat down in front of it all, ready to begin my occupation of Master Emerald Guardian once again.
"I have no idea why I was given this job in the first place," I stated to myself. "But the one thing I do know, that this is my fate. My whole life. Now that it has been restored, my life can return to peace."
This is where my story ends.

Also, see if you can spot the Sonic Chronicles reference. And that's no mere reference, by the way.
It's part of my continuity.
